Chels from The Q Division and And a Rewatch Podcast helps us prep our exorcisms as we get into the history of this extremely long-running soap, and how the O.J. Simpson trial led to the literal Devil possessing Deidre Hall's popular character Marlena Evans. We talk huge nuts, wedding crashers and plane crashes, deep voice filters and practical effects, the obvious parallels to The Exorcist, and how soap operas are the foundation for most of the television we love.Find Chels:The Q Division | And a Rewatch Podcast | Bluesky | InstagramA proud part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveTip us on Ko-Fi | Gimmicks WebsiteEmail: gimmickspodcast@gmail.com | Bluesky | InstagramTheme song: "Disco Tears" by Raven | Creative Commons Attribution 3.0Sources: Liquid Soap clip complication on YouTubeWriteup from Fortress of SolitudeInterview with Producer Ken CordayCBR writeupThe Devil on the Days of Our Lives WikiHyatt, Wesley (1997). Most of you will know Andrea as one of our favourite presenters on Daytime Television for more than 2 decades. She brightened our mornings on GMTV as the lovely weather girl and then she was Loose Women's longest serving host for 13 years. She's also been on so many other shows like Dancing on Ice and Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins. Plus, she's interviewed some of the biggest names in showbusiness: Oprah, Drew Barrymore, Beyonce and Michael Bublé to name just a few. But what you might not know is how Andrea came to be in these jobs and what life was really like behind the scenes. From her days of training as a journalist to being a household name - Andrea has shown determination, bravery, and resilience throughout it all In 2020 Andrea decided to leave her enormous job in television for her own Next Chapter. She wanted to concentrate on what she loves doing: helping people - and especially women - to think differently about themselves and the challenges life throws at them. She's now a life coach and her website This Girl is On Fire is helping women all over the world. She's written 4 books and is a multiple Sunday Times bestselling author. It's very easy if you think of Andrea on our televisions, looking amazing, glamorous and confident next to all those big stars – to think she never suffers from the same insecurities, anxieties or worries as we do. But this just isn't true. In this interview Andrea is candid, funny and honest. She spoke in such detail about all her Next Chapters we decided for the first time this should be a two-part interview, the next one will be next week. I've wanted to have her on the podcast for so long and she was everything a Next Chapter guest should be and more. You can learn more about Andrea and her brilliant work at https://andreamclean.com/ And just in case you've forgotten you can find me and my books at elliebarkerwrites.com
A week ago I got a mini-cassette recorder off of eBay for something like $25 and I digitized a bunch of these micro cassettes I had. My dad had a micro cassette dictaphone when we were little and when he didn't have a secretary, which is what they called them in those days, it just sat in his office. Then years later my sister and I found it and started playing with it. One of the pieces I play here is from a tape that had me and some guy named Eric talking for about an hour. I don't even know who Eric is. At one point we say to my sister that we hate each other but we just hang out cuz no one else is around. That's how neighborhoods worked in the old days. You were much more tolerant of people you didn't like to the point where you'd spend the whole day playing video games. So there's that and an old 4 track recording of a song I did with Steve about kissing a man. There's also an old cassette I found of me jamming with Rick Finn. When you're a young musician you're encouraged to record yourself so you can hear yourself and have a somewhat objective opinion. It's the best way to improve. I don't know what people did before recording devices existed. They probably just endured endless criticisms. That must be why the Amish always look so depressed.Support the showhunchbunny.com
The Dating Game… The Newlywed Game… The Gong Show. Chuck Barris created some of TV's most enduring and beloved game shows, at one point supplying network TV with 27 hours worth of game-show programming a week. Did he also work as a contract killer for the CIA, assassinating government targets during the 1960s and 1970s? According to his 1984 book “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” and the 2002 movie directed by George Clooney, that's exactly what Chuck Barris did. In the film, he's portrayed as murdering 33 people while also holding down a full-time job producing game shows. But was it true? Or was it a desperate bid for attention from a man sad to see his identity change from “The King of Daytime Television” to “The Baron of Bad Taste”? Join us as we dig into the controversy surrounding Chuck Barris, one of TV's most prolific and also wackiest figures. It began as a 15 minute old time radio show in 1937, running until 1947. It then ran through its metamorphosis into a television drama until 1956. In 1952, it became a television show and the radio and television programs ran concurrently for some time. Today this television show is still running. It was originally sponsored by Procter and Gamble, who put the "soap" in soap opera. Text on OTRCAT.com ©2001-2022 OTRCAT INC All Rights Reserved. Reproduction is prohibited. The brainchild of Irna Phillips, this show is based on her life experiences. When she was 19, an unmarried Irna gave birth to a still-born child. At this time, she found comfort through listening to the sermons preached by Dr. Preston Bradley, a minister of a church for the brotherhood of man. These sermons then became the backbone for the creation of her dramatic serial, The Guiding Light, 27 years later. The show originally centered around a preachers' sermons. Irna Phillips later published these sermons, and they became a best-selling book. Guilding Light also generated the spin-off series, Right To Happiness. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ang189/support

Daytime television was once thought of as the nursery slopes of a TV career. Today its complex formats and production requirements are seen by many as more challenging than peak-time programming. “You will learn more making a daytime show than any other.”– Rachel Innes-Lumsden Smaller teams, smaller budgets and tighter schedules mean there's little room for error. That makes a daytime production team a well-oiled machine where everyone knows their job. Street Auction (above) and Dom on the Spot are two BBC One daytime series that were given the green light by commissioning editor Lindsay Bradbury. Alongside Lindsay in this week's podcast are Julia Foot, series producer of Street Auction, and Rachel Innes-Lumsden, executive producer from the independent production company TwoFour which makes Dom on the Spot In this podcast you'll learn: - the pros and cons of working on daytime programmes - the daytime TV production process - the relationship between commissioning editors and programme producers - the schedules for daytime productions Find out more about BBC Academy: Website – www.bbc.co.uk/academy Facebook – www.facebook.com/bbcacademy Twitter – www.twitter.com/bbcacademy
