As far as I know, it's also the first publication that explicitly stated a specific version of "Hybridity" in the formation of Kreyòl. This sort of Hybridity has come to be known as the (now disconfirmed) "Relexification Hypothesis" whereby Kreyòl is: … a form of French fashioned in the mold of African syntax, or, since we generally classify languages based on the history of their grammar, Haitian Creole (Kreyòl) is an African (Ewe) language with a French vocabulary. This talk is an exercise in intellectual history and critical race theory to try and understand the historically and geo-politically rooted biases in the deep contradictions between Sylvain's theoretical claims, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, her detailed comparative data triangulating Kreyòl, French and Ewe toward a thorough documentation of systematic parallels, at the levels of morphology, lexicon and syntax, among all three languages. We will analyze certain discursive links between language, linguistics, identity, decolonization and liberation through the prism of the formidable intellectual biography of Comhaire-Sylvain – Haiti's first linguist and anthropologist and the first Haitian woman to obtain a PhD, back in 1936. Comhaire-Sylvain's contributions can help us forge a better future ahead – for Creole studies, Creole speakers and more.Michel DeGraffMichel DeGraff is Professor of Linguistics at MIT, co-founder and co-director of the MIT-Haiti Initiative, founding member of Akademi Kreyòl Ayisyen and fellow of the Linguistic Society of America. Michel entered linguistics through the "backdoor" so to speak, in 1985, as a Summer Intern at AT&T Bell Laboratories' Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence department in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Michel obtained his PhD in 1992 with a dissertation on the syntax of Haitian Creole. Today, Michel's research contributes to an egalitarian approach to Creole, Indigenous and other non-colonial languages and their speakers, as in his native Haiti. In addition to linguistics and education, his writings engage intellectual history and critical race theory, especially the links between power-knowledge hierarchies and the hegemonic (mis)representations of non-colonial languages and their speakers in the Global South and beyond. His work is anchored in a broader agenda for human rights and social justice, with Haiti as one spectacular case of a post-colony where the national language spoken by all (Haitian Creole) is systematically disenfranchised, even in certain scholarly traditions, while the (former) colonial language (in this case, French), spoken by few in Haiti, is enlisted for socio-economic, political and geo-political domination.

We first interviewed Professor Michel DeGraff back in season 1; he now returns for another episode, diving deeper into issues of culture and identity. He talks about his childhood in Haiti, where he was punished at school for speaking his own mother tongue, and where he was taught by his teachers and even his parents that Kreyòl was not “a real language.” After doing early work in natural language processing that led him to question widespread assumptions about language, Prof. DeGraff shifted his academic focus to linguistics. He now begins each iteration of his course 24.908 Creole Languages and Caribbean Identities by asking his students to write linguistic autobiographies that describe the languages they grew up speaking and examine their own attitudes about language. In addition to discussing that course, he talks in this episode about his efforts to draw attention to language's role in perpetuating imbalances of power. As an added bonus, we hear from two students from 24.908, discussing how Prof. DeGraff helped cultivate trust in the classroom, and how that trust freed the students to enrich each other's understanding of the world by sharing personal experiences and insights.*English Translation of Prof. Michel DeGraff's Kreyòl Statement: So, my fellow countrymen,There's something that is very VERY important to understand:we must understand the origins of prejudices against Kreyòl.We must also remember that Dessalines said, so clearly, that everyone is human. And he also knew that,if everyone is human, then every language is a perfectly normal language. So Kreyòl, too, is a perfectly normal language.  That's why he said, since before 1804,that Kreyòl is our own language,so we don't need to always look for other languages to speak.Yes, we must remember, if we did not have Kreyòl as a language,we could never have succeeded in making this revolutionthat gave us an independent Haiti.Kreyòl was the language of the revolution. So, today, we must useKreyòl too as language of instruction. It is this language that will allow all children in Haiti to access quality education as their right.Relevant Resources:MIT OpenCourseWare The OCW Educator Portal Professor DeGraff's faculty page 24.908 Creole Languages and Caribbean Identities on OpenCourseWare The MIT-Haiti Initiative Chalk Radio Season 1 episode with Prof. DeGraffNY Times op-ed by Prof. DeGraff Linguistics and Economics in the Caribbean (article by Ianá Ferguson) Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions (https://www.sessions.blue/) Connect with UsIf you have a suggestion for a new episode or have used OCW to change your life or those of others, tell us your story. S., Barr-Gillespie, P. G. Abstract: Strategies to reveal the discovery of the relationships between novel phenotypic behaviors and specific genetic alterations can be achieved via either target-specific, directed mutagenesis or phenotypic selection following random chemical mutagenesis. As an alternative approach, one can exploit deficiencies in DNA repair pathways that are responsible for the maintenance of genetic integrity in response to spontaneously-induced damage. In the genetic background of mice deficient in the DNA glycosylase NEIL1, elevated numbers of spontaneous mutations arise from translesion DNA synthesis past unrepaired, oxidatively-induced base damage. Several litters of Neil1 knockout mice included animals that were distinguished by their backwards-walking behavior in open-field environments, while maintaining frantic forward movements in their home cage environment. Other phenotypic manifestations included swim test failures, head tilting, and circling. Mapping of the mutation that conferred these behaviors revealed the introduction of a stop codon at amino acid 4 of the Ush1g gene; the allele was Ush1gbw, reflecting the backwards-walking phenotype. Ush1gbw/bw null mice displayed auditory and vestibular defects that are commonly seen with mutations affecting inner-ear hair-cell function, including a complete lack of auditory brainstem responses and vestibular-evoked potentials. As in other Usher syndrome type I mutant mouse lines, hair cell phenotypes included disorganized and split hair bundles, as well as altered distribution of proteins for stereocilia that localize to the tips of row 1 or row 2. Disruption to the bundle and kinocilium displacement suggested that USH1G is essential for forming the hair cell's kinocilial links. Due to the vestibular dysfunction, however, visual behavior as measured with optokinetic tracking could not be assessed in Ush1gbw/bw mice. Consistent with other Usher type 1 models, however, Ush1gbw/bw mice had no substantial retinal degeneration compared to Ush1gbw/+ controls out to six months. In contrast to previously-described Ush1g alleles, this new allele provides the first knockout model for this gene. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.28.530466v1?rss=1 Authors: Chatterjee, P., Morgan, C. P., Krey, J. F., Benson, C., Goldsmith, J., Bateschell, M., Ricci, A., Barr-Gillespie, P. G. Abstract: GIPC3 has been implicated in auditory function. Initially localized to the cytoplasm of inner and outer hair cells of the cochlea, GIPC3 increasingly concentrated in cuticular plates and at cell junctions over the first two weeks of postnatal development. Early postnatal Gipc3KO/KO mice had mostly normal mechanotransduction currents, but by one month of age they had a complete loss of their auditory brainstem response. During postnatal development, cuticular plates rounded up in Gipc3KO/KO hair cells, then degenerated after postnatal day 15. GIPC3 bound directly to MYO6, and the loss of MYO6 led to altered distribution of GIPC3. In addition, junctions between inner hair cells and intervening inner phalangeal cells were severely disrupted in Gipc3KO/KO. Immunoaffinity isolation of GIPC3 from chicken inner ear extracts identified co-precipitating proteins associated with adherens junctions, intermediate filament networks, and the cuticular plate. Several of these immunoprecipitated proteins contained GIPC-family consensus PDZ binding motifs (PBMs), including MYO18A, which binds directly to the PDZ domain of GIPC3. We propose that GIPC3 and MYO6 couple to PBMs of cytoskeletal and cell-junction proteins to shape the cuticular plate. Copy rights belong to original authors.

Today I'm joined by Cyrene Krey, a total badass of a woman, a Path to Freedom graduate and current client. I wanted Cyrene to come share her story with you guys today because I think it's such a great example of how the first year in business REALLY goes.   It's all about trial and error, discovering what's really aligned with you and what's not and exploring the business that's right for you.    Cyrene started off with one business that was based on her passion, photography but found it was like pulling teeth! That's when she switched paths and started something that was more aligned with her true calling - serving women who'd been through trauma and helping them transform their inner badasses.    Cyrene took her life experience and packaged it up into a system that other women can now use to really take control of their lives back, to stop getting walked all over and start standing up for themselves and overcome and manage the trauma and PTSD that affects them.    And she did this all without being certified or having a degree in psychology. We dive into how she was able to do this in this episode. The truth is, people actually want to work with someone who's gone through what they're going through. And often the best people to help them are just a few steps ahead of them. But first you need to package up that experience into a replicable system for others to go through!   For a limited time I'm actually offering a free PDF guidebook that gives an overview and outline of the exact process, my PCM framework, that I teach inside my Path to Freedom Program that Cyrene took to develop her own coaching program.    The bonus worksheet for the PCM framework that you can download now for free WILL be sold separately soon, so if you're thinking about starting a coaching business, or you already have but you aren't getting anywhere with it, this is the perfect next step for you.    ❌No more confusion about what value you have to offer.   ❌No more pulling your hair out trying (but failing) to share your gifts and experience with the world in a way that makes sense   ❌No more stressing over the fact that you're not qualified "enough"   ❌No more "I'm a coach!" but you're actually only doing "pro-bono" work    With this ONE simple & quick action guide you'll be able to understand how your own life experience and knowledge can be turned into a powerful system for getting clients results and be sold as a high-ticket, high-value program.    You can download it for free right now, get it before the bonus goes away -  http://punchdrunksoul.com/coach101   Also on this episode we chat about our trip to Thailand and how Cyrene got the courage to travel out of the country for the first time ever BY HERSELF no less to attend my retreat. And we also get into how much she's invested in herself and her business and what that's been like for her. She shares the fears she had around investing in herself and how it turns out that what she was really afraid of was failing.   We've all been there but Cyrene shares how she was able to turn this around to have success and land her first paid client!   Aha Moments   - The difference between coaching and therapy from someone who's been through both - How struggling with PTSD for 15 years made Cyrene choose between life or death and how she not only chose life but completely reinvented herself - Why turning your passion into your business isn't always the best plan - 2 great analogies to know when something is aligned versus not - How to get over what people are going to think about your new life or business - How coaching is part of a revolution of new career paths in the 21st century - When you think you can't afford to invest in yourself - dig deeper. The underlying issue is usually THIS. - Cyrene's best advice for new coaches or  aspiring coaches just starting out   Links: Get my PCM Framework and Top 7 Tips To Start Your Coaching Biz and Get Paid Clients without Being Certified -  Punchdrunksoul.com/coach101 Path to Freedom Coach Academy Waitlist: Punchdrunksoul.com/pathtofreedom Cyrene's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brokentobalanced/ Cyrene's Website: Broken2Balanced.com
