Send us a textWelcome back. Continuing our ongoing exploration of what it means to be an individual living in a liberal society, today I am happy to host Charlotte Thomas to talk to us about what it means to learn and the importance of the liberal arts.  Join us to find out what it truly means to be “educated” and how to do it. A mix of personal, inspirational, and relatable, Professor Thomas brings her knowledge of teaching in the classroom into our conversation. Of course, rather than simply lecturing, teaching and learning in the liberal arts context means discussing, connecting, and questioning.  Charlotte Thomas is a professor of philosophy and Great Books at Mercer University. Dennis Prager Talks to Author of The New Concise History of the Crusades, Professor Thomas F. Madden The New Concise History of the Crusades (Critical Issues in World and International History) Paperback – Student Edition, November 10, 2005 by Thomas F. Madden (Author) See all formats and editions How have the crusades contributed to Islamist rage and terrorism today? Were the crusades the Christian equivalent of modern jihad? In this sweeping yet crisp history, Thomas F. Madden offers a brilliant and compelling narrative of the crusades and their contemporary relevance. With a cry of "God wills it!" medieval knights ushered in a new era in European history. Across Europe a wave of pious enthusiasm led many thousands to leave their homes, family, and friends to march to distant lands in a great struggle for Christ. Yet the crusades were more than simply a holy war. They represent a synthesis of attitudes and values that were uniquely medieval--so medieval, in fact, that the crusading movement is rarely understood today. Placing all the major crusades within the medieval social, economic, religious, and intellectual environments that gave birth to the movement and nurtured it for centuries, Madden brings the distant medieval world vividly to life. From Palestine and Europe's farthest reaches, each crusade is recounted in a clear, concise narrative. The author gives special attention as well to the crusades' effects on the Islamic world and the Christian Byzantine East. More information is available on the author's website. Thomas Weimbs is a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he directs a research laboratory focused on polycystic kidney disease (PKD). He received his doctoral degree from the University of Cologne, Germany, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1999, he started his first independent research laboratory at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic as an assistant professor. There, he started to research PKD after he was approached by a local family affected by PKD who financially supported PKD research in his newly-founded laboratory. Their family foundation still supports PKD research in Dr. Weimbs' lab today. In 2005, Dr. Weimbs moved his laboratory back to California to join the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at UCSB. His laboratory studies molecular mechanisms underlying PKD with an emphasis towards developing new therapies. Research from Dr. Weimbs' lab has led to a better understanding of PKD and led to novel methods to deliver therapeutics specifically to polycystic kidneys. Some of the most recent research has led to the discovery that dietary interventions and natural metabolites strongly slow PKD progression in animal models. This led to the launch of Santa Barbara Nutrients with the goal to make these approaches available for the nutritional management of PKD and to support kidney health. Research in Dr. Weimbs' laboratory has been funded by grants from federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, by private foundations, including the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust, the Amy P. Goldman Foundation and the Jarrett Family Fund, as well as several biotech companies. A recent paper in the journal Leadership Quarterly explores the very nature of leadership styles and how they play out, ultimately asserting that: "the common finding that positive leadership styles lead to positive outcomes […] might be an artifact of conflation rather than a reflection of reality” (p. 1). Yet what are positive leadership styles and why have generations of leadership researchers so badly misinterpreted their impact?Joining me on the Brain for Business podcast to discuss the findings of the paper is one of its co-authors, Professor Thomas Fischer of the University of Geneva. About Thomas FischerThomas Fischer is an Associate Professor at the University of Geneva and is the Yearly Review Editor of The Leadership Quarterly, the premier journal fully dedicated to leadership research. Thomas Fischer's work focuses on managing people in organizations, and in particular on two topics. First, the conceptualization and measurement of leadership styles. Professor Just served as Assistant to the Director of African and Middle Eastern Affairs within Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and is the author of “Combating Antisemitism in Germany and Poland: Strategies Since 1990.”   Antisemitism is often defined as  hostile acts against Jews based on religious, political,  economic, and racial grounds.  Two major programs to reduce antisemitism in Poland and Germany are through legal measures and public diplomacy. It is illegal in both countries to deny that the Holocaust existed. Conspiracy theories related to the Covid-19 pandemic have contributed to antisemitism in the USA.  Unfortunately, social media outlets were critical to disseminating misinformation about Jews.  Jewish people cannot be blamed for Netanyahu's disastrous policies in Gaza, and a person is able to be pro- Palestinian, pro-Israeli and anti-Netanyahu's' prosecution of the war.

This week, Andy interviews Professor Thomas Curran, Department of Psychological and Behavioral Science at the London School of Economics. His writings have appeared in TIME magazine, the Harvard Business Review, the New Scientist, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times just to name a few. He is fresh off launching his debut book, The Perfection Trap: Embracing the Power of Good Enough. He also delivered a TedMed talk on the subject which has garnered more than 3 million views. Not surprisingly, he is widely regarded as the world's leading expert on perfectionism.Society seems to value the concept of perfectionism, but Professor Curran has a much different take on the subject. Not only does he identify the havoc-wreaking cause underlying perfectionism, he also provides healthy strategies to recognize, overcome, and manage it. Professor Curran even shares what his own battle with perfectionism looks like and how it could have prevented him from rising to his place of prominence on the subject.Hear how perfectionism almost prevented him from delivering his Ted Talk on the subject and how it almost prevented him from writing one of the most powerful and groundbreaking chapters of his new book.Maybe…just maybe, if even a world-renowned psychologist, author, and professor struggles with the ill effects of perfectionism, we can learn to treat ourselves with more kindness in our efforts to deal with it as well.Professor Curran says one of his primary purposes in life is to “bust myths” related to perfectionism, chiefly that it is good for us. Rather than benefit us, it actually blocks us from success and happiness and can result in many adverse psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. He also discusses three dimensions of perfectionism that you will find fascinating; 1) self-oriented perfectionism 2) Socially prescribed perfectionism and 3) Other-oriented perfectionism. In probably his most controversial assertion, Professor Curran highlights the societal and systemic causes of perfectionism. He argues that individual solutions don't work when it's a societal/systemic problem to begin with. When you consider that US students take more than 112 standardized tests from kindergarten to twelfth grade, it's no wonder that our students focus on these scores and derive self-value (or lack of) from them. Then you add in the influence of social media, and the fact that everyone else seems to have a perfect life leaving us all to wonder why ours is not.Hopefully, you will be so intrigued and have so many “ah-ha!” moments while listening to this conversation, that you'll wonder where the hour went. You'll love Thomas' affable, humble approach to life and living and buy his book so that you can learn more about how perfectionism may be impacting your life.Connect With Thomas: TwitterLinkedInWebsiteAs well, you can find Thomas' Ted Talk here. As a health professional she also had the benefit of health literacy and a personal assertiveness that may have well also helped her be at her daughter's 10th birthday. “There were lots of ‘sliding door' moments. If I hadn't asked a certain question or pushed for a different answer or gotten a second or third opinion, then the outcome would be very different,” she says. The epicentre of Ms Delaney's survival is genetic testing. She says it's critical because it opens the doorway to emerging new treatments, personalized medicine and clinical trials. “These are critical for all cancer patients, but especially for rare cancer patients whose treatment options may be limited,” Ms Delaney said Ms Delaney was diagnosed with stage 4 clear cell ovarian cancer nearly seven years ago. She is enthusiastic about PROSPECT a new cancer treatment pathway that provides genomic testing to Australians with rare or incurable cancers, and then provides access to any clinical trials and off-label therapies that might make a difference. PROSPECT cancer screening program is a clever collaboration between University of New South Wales, NSW government and a whole range of players in the Australian medical research sector. [ACAST LINK] Professor David Thomas leads Omico, the not-for-profit which runs PROSPECT's cancer screening program. He is optimistic about PROSPECT bringing a bit more equity to cancer treatment for those with rare cancers who often miss out on trials or are and also for remote patients. “Regional and rural Australia is very important to us and we're specifically trying to promote the program and work with our clinical colleagues in regional cancer centers. “That specifically applies also to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer patients. Rural and regional patients, as well as Indigenous cancer patients, have demonstrably worse outcomes. We don't want them to be left behind,” he says. For the 150 people diagnosed each day with a rare cancer, it's a new pathway that can make the difference and not just in the future. Professor Thomas says the program is not a philanthropic exercise with no connection with patient interests. “The pace of research progress is so great that it's now creating options for patients in real time rather than for some future benefit. “I would encourage us to think about research as just another part of the way of our armamentarium when we try to treat diseases like cancer,” he says. Perfectionism takes a serious toll on your mental health and well-being. It's often driven by the fear of not being good enough and involves a desire to get validation from others. It often leads to anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Fortunately, there are some things that can help you give up the need to appear perfect. Thomas Curran, a psychology professor and the author of The Perfection Trap, shares how addressing perfectionism can improve your mental health and lead to a happier life. Some of the things he talks about are: The link between perfectionism and increased risk of mental health issues. Why perfectionists tend to feel lonely. Why perfectionism is a spectrum. Why perfectionism can lead to self-sabotage and an inability to derive satisfaction from success. How social media can contribute to perfectionism. Why overcoming perfectionism requires a shift in mindset. How embracing imperfections and being willing to make mistakes can lead to personal growth and success. How letting go of perfectionism can actually improve performance and creativity. Most of us know perfectionism as the relentless pursuit of flawlessness, our fatal flaw of having a constant need to meet impossibly high standards. It's a trait that many of us strive for, believing that it will lead to success and happiness. But what if I told you that this concept of perfectionism as we know it isn't the full picture? And the badge of honour we think perfectionists wear is one big misconception. Today I'm joined by Professor Thomas Curran, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics. With over a decade of experience, Professor Curran is a world leading expert on perfectionism. He has written for the Harvard Business Review, New Scientist, The Guardian, Telegraph and Wall Street Journal. In 2018, he gave a TEDMED talk which has over 3 million views and earlier this month he published his book The Perfection Trap: The Power of Good Enough in a world that always wants more'. In the conversation we talk about the paradoxical effects of perfectionism, how our perfectionistic traits stem from a cultural obsession rather than a personal flaw and shows what we can do as individuals to resist the modern-day pressure to be perfect - and how we can create a culture that celebrates the joys of imperfection.Sponsored by Huel - go to https://www.huel.com/deepdive and with your first order you'll get a free t-shirt and shaker.Sponsored by Trading 212 - download the Trading 212 app https://trading212.com/promocodes/ALI and use the promo code "ALI" after signing up and depositing to receive a random free share worth up to £100. He is retiring this year after a quarter century at the Graduate Center, but he is not stepping away entirely from scholarship. He joins The Thought Project to discuss his long career and the current state and future of the U.N. In his words, this is “not a high point of the U.N.'s 77-year history, but we've seen lots of such nadirs in the past, and I'd like to just say that this too shall pass.” Recently, Weiss has contributed research to the protection of world heritage. He plans to continue this work and is currently involved in a project on the protection of Asian art with former Graduate Center President Chase F. Weiss says he leaves the Graduate Center with great appreciation to so many current and former students who have since become colleagues. Listen in to learn more.

Thomas Harrington, Senior Scholar at the Brownstone Institute, is an essayist and Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College in Hartford (USA) where he taught for 24 years. He joins Discernable to discuss what appears to be a worldwide repeat of the infamous Milgram experiment where ordinary people are pushed to commit extraordinary atrocities by authority figures. As an expert in the formation of identity, culture and language he often sheds light on the rhetorical 'framing' techniques used to influence broad populations. An example of is the rise of modern 'Nudge Units' within governments known by various names such as 'Behavioural Insights Unit' et al. The Professor believes that once a suitably convincing 'frame' is established, a subject can be made to accept any proposition contained within that frame even if that proposition is antithetical to the frame itself. This demonstrates the immense power and danger of 'framing' techniques employed by politicians and corporations throughout the globe to achieve their desired end. Thomas shows how this was successfully deployed to recruit a pliant population of 'police citizens' or 'karens' who zealously enforce the policies and propaganda of governments beyond what is legally stipulated and into the realm of cultural norms. In this discussion we also looked at identity making vs decision making, the religious impulse of humans and what can replace it in a secular age, the reliability of rationalism and science and parallel societal structures. My understanding is that in order to understand Critical Race Theory accurately one should begin with the seminal work, Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings That Formed the Movement, authored and edited by Kimberlé Crenshaw, Neil Gotanda, Gary Peller, and Kendall Thomas. Especially since June of 2021, the political and Christian Right has chosen to target Critical Race Theory as harmful to the democracy and culture of the United States. Over 22 states have passed or are considering passing laws that prohibit the teaching of Critical Race Theory. Based on what I have read from the 'The Key Writings' book and what I have heard or read about Critical Race Theory from the political and Christian Right, it is my conclusion that what is being presented by the political and Christian Right is some mixture, depending upon whose perspective is being presented, of being uniformed, misinformed, simply wrong, and often intentionally maliciously deceiving. In order to help provide some fuller, deeper, and more accurate understanding and to help correct what is being presented from the political and Christian Right, Professor Kendall Thomas, one of the co-authors and co-editors of 'The Key Writings,' has graciously agreed to be my guest for this episode. Professor Thomas is the Nash Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. He is a scholar of comparative constitutional law and human rights whose teaching and research focus on critical race theory, legal philosophy, feminist legal theory, and law and sexuality. Professor Thomas is the co-founder and director of the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia Law School, where he leads interdisciplinary projects and programs that explore how the law operates as one of the central ways to create meaning in society. He is also a founder of Amend the 13th, a movement to amend the U.S. Constitution to end enforced prison labor. The intro and outro music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project.
