Hi everyone. Welcome back. I'm back after a week off. I hope all is well. This week I talk about being yourself. Having the self-confidence to go your own way, do your own thing, develop your own voice. As lockdown is starting to ease (fingers crossed) and you may have been (quite literally) in the shed for the past few months, things may have taken on a new perspective for you in your playing, or even your whole life. So keep going with that new found direction. Explore the new possibilities the hours, weeks, months of practice have given you. I also gibber on about some random stuff like, why I no longer have a website and the whole missed opportunity around that. Thanks for listening and have a great week.

I got to interview Rich over Zoom during lockdown and it was great to talk to him about how he got in to the drums and the journey to becoming, in my opinion, a true innovator of the instrument. Rich is genuinely pushing boundaries on the drum kit and he takes about he thinks the drum kit will evolve in the future. Also, his commitment to understanding how to play and voice polyrhythms on the drumkit is pretty remarkable. Sit back and enjoy this episode. It's quite a long one, but full of some really interesting insights. Thanks and keeps safe everyone. Peace.

Bliss and Drumming: The Slow Enlightenment of the Hard Rock Drummer

From the blog www.blissanddrumming.com, this piece http://blissanddrumming.com/2017/10/finding-compassion-behind-drumkit/ is read by Clementine. She also references www.awakeningthetrueself.com. *** What is really interesting is how much easier it is to be compassionate to others than it is to oneself. On the stage, when I fall out of the moment, what is there is a berating voice, warning of upcoming potential disasters, or negative thoughts of defeat. I’ve always felt that any harsh criticism of my playing could never be as wounding as the things I hear in my head. Anything hurtful you can say about my playing can never be worse than what I’ve heard already, upstairs. I know by now that these thoughts are my ego, trying to protect me from disaster. I know that it’s that deep layer of shame at the bottom of my personality, nagging me to give up before I begin. I’m grateful that my years of meditation have clued me in to these patterns and have given me a way to step back from them, observe them and let them dissolve.
