Duncan Hamilton watched England beat West Germany as an eight-year-old boy in the company of his father and grandfather. He recalls 'Wembley, spread out in the sun; the waving flags; the delirious, joy-of-all-joys moment of the final whistle; the trophy sparkling in the late afternoon light'.But, seeing the whole game again during the misery of the first Covid lockdown, finally made him realise what Alf Ramsey and his players had no inkling of, which was what came next for them. How, for many of those boys of summer, almost everything after that shimmering moment amounted to an anti-climax or a setback. How '66 was not a beginning, a guaranteed path towards more success, but a slow decline and fall, and also a disproportionate number of disappointments. And how the triumph of '66 was dulled through constant repetition, the same images always flashed before us.Hamilton recognised, too, how many myths and misconceptions had grown around the match. He decided to revisit '66, tracing the very roots of a story - as well as the hidden figures within it - that really began during the era of post-War austerity.Answered Prayers provides, at last, a full account of English football's greatest achievement and the failures that followed it. We see the institutional inability to appreciate Ramsey and his players, who were taken for granted; the political machinations of the blazered fools who ran the Football Association; the short-sighted blunderers of the Football League. To buy 'Answered Prayers' please visit - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Answered-Prayers-England-1966-World-ebook/dp/B0BRS88NXY Hosted on Acast. We also take the opportunity to explore the myths surrounding the lead-up to the 1953 Le Mans. Did Rolt and Hamilton really head down to a bar to drown their sorrows and end up having to sober up and jump straight in the cars? Or was it all just an elaborate story to sell more copies of Duncan Hamilton's Biography, Touch Wood? The answer is within this podcast! Hamilton talks about why he chose to write about the man from Trent Bridge and how one of the most misunderstood stories in cricket history had to be retold with a fresh perspective. No conversation on Larwood would be complete without the following men - Douglas Jardine, Bill Voce, Arthur Carr and of course Don Bradman. In this episode we revisit some of the key events from the Larwood story which is stranger than most fiction works on sporting figures and helps the reader to fully understand the journey of the fast bowler. We also talk about the paperback release of Hamilton's upcoming novel - Injury Time. https://www.amazon.com/Harold-Larwood-Duncan-Hamilton-ebook/dp/B077Y6DCLD/ref=sr_1_1?crid=10O8OL7EN7TDR&keywords=duncan+hamilton+larwood&qid=1648963867&sprefix=duncan+hamilton+larwood%2Caps%2C90&sr=8-1 https://www.amazon.com/Injury-Time-Novel-Duncan-Hamilton/dp/1529408431/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1C8IG3FZ7L5AY&keywords=duncan+hamilton+injury+time&qid=1648963925&sprefix=duncan+hamilton+injury+time%2Caps%2C59&sr=8-1 https://www.amazon.com/One-Long-Beautiful-Summer-Red-Ball-ebook/dp/B09L7XR9N9/ref=sr_1_3?crid=21PO3FC60F8HH&keywords=duncan+hamilton+cricket+books&qid=1648964279&sprefix=duncan+hamilton+cricket+books%2Caps%2C90&sr=8-3

One of the first golfers with a disability I saw play was Duncan Hamilton-Martin. Duncan was playing in Swindon, and I was there to observe the event. My objective was to get a feel for what golf for the disabled was all about. Duncan was on the tee, and if I remember rightly, he ripped a tee shot down the middle. Off he went down the fairway as if it was the most natural thing in the world. For Duncan, it was, as you will hear in this story of accepting what you have and simply getting on with life. Please enjoy the story of Duncan Hamilton-Martin.

Neville Cardus described how one majestic stroke-maker 'made music' and 'spread beauty' with his bat. Between two world wars, he became the laureate of cricket by doing the same with words. In The Great Romantic, award-winning author Duncan Hamilton demonstrates how Cardus changed sports journalism for ever. While popularising cricket - while appealing, in Cardus' words to people who 'didn't know a leg-break from the pavilion cat at Lord's'- he became a star in his own right with exquisite phrase-making, disdain for statistics and a penchant for literary and musical allusions. Among those who venerated Cardus were PG Wodehouse, John Arlott, Harold Pinter, JB Priestley and Don Bradman. However, behind the rhapsody in blue skies, green grass and colourful characters, this richly evocative biography finds that Cardus' mother was a prostitute, he never knew his father and he received negligible education. Infatuations with younger women ran parallel to a decidedly unromantic marriage. And, astonishingly, the supreme stylist's aversion to factual accuracy led to his reporting on matches he never attended. Yet Cardus also belied his impoverished origins to prosper in a second class-conscious profession, becoming a music critic of international renown. The Great Romantic uncovers the dark enigma within a golden age.

The two-time winner of the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the Year award about 'Immortal', his new approved biography of George Best. Hamilton's book on Brian Clough was superb, while his biography of the outstanding fast bowler Harold Larwood, the main protagonist in the controversial 'Bodyline' series between Australia and England in 1932-33, also won awards. Having spent three years researching Immortal, during which he spoke to hundreds of people closest to Best and went through 5,000 cuttings, Hamilton offers rare insight into the Belfast Boy.

Being blind hasn't ever stopped the broadcaster Peter White from loving football, and that's reflected in his own choice of a good read when he argues in favour of Brian Clough - as captured by Duncan Hamilton who covered Notts Forest during their glory years for the local paper. By contrast the satirist and prankster Heydon Prowse, fresh from his BBC3 series, 'The Revolution will be Televised', brings a description of tax havens and how they work to the table, in 'Treasure Islands' by Nicholas Shaxson. Harriett Gilbert meanwhile proposes 'Faro's Daughter', a romantic Regency thriller by Georgette Heyer. We'll see what Peter and Heydon make of that. Producer: Mark Smalley

Libby Purves is joined by Clarence Adoo, a member of the British Paraorchestra, Simon Gough, to talk about his relationship with his great uncle, the poet Robert Graves, sports writer Duncan Hamilton and poet/rapper Kate Tempest. Musician Clarence Adoo is a founding member of the British Paraorchestra. Set up by the conductor Charles Hazlewood, the orchestra is made up of disabled musicians playing a range of instruments from the harp to the sitar. Clarence was a top trumpeter with the Northern Sinfonia when he was paralysed from the neck down in a car accident in 1995. He now makes music on a computer called 'Headspace'. The orchestra features in a Channel Four documentary Paraorchestra and they will be performing at the Southbank in London as part of the Unlimited festival. Simon Gough is the son of actor Michael Gough and actress-cum-journalist Diana Graves. In his book, The White Goddess - An Encounter, Simon recalls the complicated relationship with his great-uncle, the poet Robert Graves. The book describes Simon's time with Graves in Deya, Majorca, and his uncle's beautiful muse Margot who they were both in love with. The White Goddess - An Encounter is published by Galley Beggar Press. Duncan Hamilton is a sports writer and two-time winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. His book, 'The Footballer Who Could Fly' was inspired by his father's devotion to Newcastle United. But it is also an exploration of the bond between father and son through 'the beautiful game' and how football became their only connection. 'The Footballer Who Could Fly' is published by Century. Kate Tempest is a poet, rapper, playwright and writer. Her new show 'Brand New Ancients' is an hour long spoken story that she tells over a live orchestral score. The story follows two families as they intertwine and collide. 'Brand New Ancients' runs at the Battersea Arts Centre in London from September 4th, as part of the theatre's Cook Up season. Producer: Paula McGinley.
