Dana Gould, Fred Olen Ray, and Bob Blackburn join me to talk about one of the most misunderstood and unfairly maligned filmmakers of all time, Edward D. Wood, Jr. in celebration of what would have been Ed's 100th birthday. I could not have gotten a better group of people to talk to about this topic as Bob has compiled books of Ed's essays and short stories and has just released a book about his friendship with Kathy Wood, Ed's widow. Dana Gould has produced Ed's unproduced scripts and has staged readings of Plan 9 From Outer Space every year for some time now. A very young Fred Olen Ray commissioned an original screenplay from Ed when he first came to Hollywood. Together, we talk about the movies, the writings, and the man, though we occasionally stray a little off topic. Listeners are bound to come away from this one with a completely different view of a man most people only know through the Tim Burton biopic. This episode was a complete joy for me and I think you will all feel the same. Bob Blackburn runs the Ed Wood, Jr. Facebook group which can be found here. He also just released his memoir, Kathy Wood and I which you can order from one of the best bookstores around, Irvington Vinyl and Books. Fred Olen Ray's new book, Hellbent for Hollywood: A Director's Journey, can be found here, and he also runs the incredibly deep catalogue of Retromedia. Dana Gould can be found here where you can not only find merch, but also his fantastic podcast, The Dana Gould Hour. Also, be sure to check out Hangin' with Dr. Z.

As an actor, Matthew Ewald's extensive experience and career in the industry began in 2001 when he completed not only his first feature film “Terminal Error,” but in the same year was fortunate enough to have portrayed Nicholas Bluetooth on the highly popular FOX science fiction/adventure television series “Galidor.” The franchise, an international hit, spawned Matthew his own action figure, as well as merchandising rights through Cap'N'Crunch cereal, McDonalds Happy Meal Toys, XBOX and Playstation video game consoles, among many others.  He has wrapped production on over sixty-plus films, including one of the lead roles—as the villainous Mallock—in the pilot “Trancers Paradox,” as well as a guest-starring role in “Humber City.”  He was a part of the highly acclaimed video game web-series “Mario Warfare,” as well as the episode “Lolani” for the equally acclaimed “Star Trek: Continues.” He has also had the great honor to have filmed the serious-minded remake of the 1959 classic Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s magnum opus, “Plan 9 From Outer Space.” Matthew has also won the prestigious Macabre Faire Film Festival's Best Actor in a Feature Film award for his role as Carl in the motion picture “Athena.” As a writer, Matthew is a published author with a number of horror stories already to his credit (three of which he had been asked to adapt into audio productions).  He is a member of the HWA.  Human Nature marked his debut novel.  His follow-up novel, Whispers in the Cries, is his masterpiece of the genre combining frightening ghost story themes before a backdrop of events surrounding the RMS Queen Mary.  The Coffin Clock is his most heartfelt novel, of high adventure, ghost pirates, and family bonding.

On this edition of Parallax Views, filmmaker Fred Olen Ray returns to discuss his latest work Deep Red, a novel whose origins date back to the 1970s with an unfinished collaboration between Fred and Plan 9 from Outer Space's Edward D. Wood, Jr. In 1978, shortly before his death, Wood was writing the screenplay for Fred's Beach Blanket Bloodbath, a sci-fi horror tale that would've involved a half man-half fish monster! But that's not all. Fred also some great tales from his filmmaking career including stories from 80s Hollywood and the world of low-budget filmmaking. There's also a great deal of advice here for people may want to get involved in filmmaking or the entertainment industry as Fred discusses working with actors, writing for television, and much, much more. There's also a fair bit of background provided in this conversation about the movies Zombie Death House and Bloody Movie, two obscurities produced by mob-connected film lover Nick Marino that provide a behind-the-scenes look at the world of 80s low-budget genre filmmaking during the VHS boom. Fred and I also talk about his work on Lifetime movies and how they're made, the fanzine culture of yesteryear, 70s/80s cult actress and sex icon Sybil Danning, marketing movies, Fred's Retromedia company and its release of movies, Fred's wacky comedy Bad Girls from Mars and why it's never seen an uncut release (hint: studios not abiding by their contract; we get into the ways some film studios do filmmakers dirty), the killer pumpkin-man movie Jack-O and Fred's wild audio commentary with the director, and more! All that and much more on this edition of Parallax Views!

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

Haven't you heard of the suspension of disbelief? We're in the second part of Scary Season here on the pod and we're diving into one of the wittier, more tender portraits ever created of a person who wasn't successful. And I don't mean like VanGogh, as in never sold a picture before death and then esteemed as a genius later. I'm talking about an artist who's been recognized as the director of possibly the worst film ever made. An artist who ground it out in the most basic and ignominious fashion possible during life. I'm talking about Edward D. Wood, Jr. It's the film Ed Wood, lovingly directed by Tim Burton and produced by Burton and Denise Di Novi for Disney's Touchstone Pictures in 1994. It's a semi (very semi) biography of Edward D. Wood, Jr., a Burton lesson in believing in yourself and continuing in the face of constant headwinds. And it's atmospheric and has a fun, resonant vibe for the Scary Season.email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Welcome to the Paranoid Style Podcast! In this episode we go deep into the bowels of the Hollow Earth. We discuss what the earth is made of, ancient hollow earth beliefs, and who or what may be found inside. From the Vril to the Symzonians, the lizards to the Nazis. There's drama, there's science, there's some Ashford and Simpson Easter eggs, and of course, America's Sweetheart, Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd! Our main sources for research this week were "Hollow Earth" by David Standish and https://bibliotecapleyades.net - seriously, go get lost in this site for days. It is so much fun. This week we took many liberties with the book entitled "The Inner Earth - My Secret Diary" we mean no disrespect to Butt Admiral, I mean Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, an American hero. And another American hero we need to recognize this week is filmmaker, Edward D. Wood, Jr. As we stole liberally from his masterpiece "Plan 9 from Outer Space" as well.  Songs used in the episode are from https://www.purple-planet.comOpening theme music provided by Tony Molina. The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! This time, for our monthly B-movie bonus episode, Skipper Steve and First Mate Sean are subjecting themselves to the clearly very accurate documentation of the hunt for mankind’s greatest aquatic murder machine. That’s right, we’re talking about the Declan O’Brien masterwork, Sharktopus! If Skipper Steve’s dog is any indication, it’s immediately clear to all living beings that this movie probably shouldn’t have been made and definitely shouldn’t have been watched. If only we had listened to that cute fuzzball… But we didn’t and now we’re defeated husks that used to resemble human beings. Let’s try to talk about this thing. Okay, an entrepreneurial tough guy helps unleash a scientific marvel known as Sharktopus (half shark-half octopus) because he’s got the military breathing down his neck. Surprise surprise, Sharktopus starts killing people after the device controlling it is destroyed. Who could have seen that coming?! The tough guy’s daughter and a cocky pretty boy who used to work for the tough guy are tasked with hunting down Sharktopus and stopping it. Along the way, the media gets involved, people die, there’s loads of brooding, more people die, and then even more people die! But then it’s exploded because it can’t be stopped any other way, but is that really the end? Take that Citizen Kane, you piece of crap! Skipper Steven and First Mate Sean give this film more consideration and thought than most people involved in the production probably did. Except when it came to the inventive deaths that take place. Those were intense. The real mystery here is what did they think of this film by the end of it? Was Sharktopus B-movie brilliance or was it an utter B-movie blunder? The only way to find out is to listen to this episode!

Here it is. The shortest Bad Movie Date Night episode to date. An episode that covers a film notoriously deemed the "worst movie ever made." Plan 9 from Outer Space is the first film to introduce the idea of a bad movie, so it's about time Nigel and Kaitlyn talked about it. Together they struggle through Kaitlyn's cold to discuss Ed Wood's career as a bad filmmaker, and the hoops he would jump through to make this film possible. Home? We have no homes! The good news is that while Lorelai may be feeling hunted and despised, we’re just feeling like we got to watch another good movie about the craziness of making movies. This time it’s 1994′s Ed Wood, the real-life story of the unusual Edward D. Wood, Jr. and one of the first of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s unusual collabs. Amid the low-budget campiness of films he made (like Plan 9 From Outer Space), we ask the big questions: Was Ed Wood really the worst director of all time? How does the movie about him connect with Edgar Allan Poe? And will Lorelai ever feel at home again? You’re the Best/You’re the Worst: Kirk’s short films Other pop culture we ref: Grey Gardens, Citizen Kane, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Queen of Outer Space, Frank Sinatra, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Disaster Artist, Bela Lugosi, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Almost Famous, Saturday Night Fever So it's a show? On this weeks episode we talk about what could be the worst movie we have covered to date, yes worse that Terror Vision.  IMDB Americas Deadliest Home Videos     TUCSON, ARIZONA, January 31, 2019—Arizona-based filmmakers Brandy Mason and Tim Fattig today announced the launch of the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for their upcoming horror/comedy film Ed and the Living Dead, a violent, darkly funny zombie tale set in the summer of 1959 and featuring the “world's worst filmmaker,” Edward D. Wood, Jr. (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Glen or Glenda). “The zombie film is an incredibly durable sub-genre, but sometimes it needs a little twist to be really engaging,” said producer/director Mason (a horror veteran with more than thirty credits, among them Don't Fuck in the Woods and its upcoming sequel, WrestleMassacre, and Rednecks) . “Dropping iconic figures like Ed Wood and Criswell into the mix and setting the film in the 1950s instantly changes what the audience will expect from the story.” Ed and the Living Dead features a fantastic cast of established and rising stars from the horror world. Jason Crowe (Volumes of Blood, The Bad Man) stars as the high-strung director Ed Wood, while David E. McMahon (American Guinea Pig: The Song of Solomon, Bonehill Road) plays Wood's long-suffering film producer George Weiss. Also starring in this much-anticipated zomb-edy: Angela Pritchett (Steve: Death Collector, Partners); Vida Ghaffari (Holy Terror, RoboWoman), Kaylee Williams (Mrs. Claus, Ahockalypse), Charles Chudabala (Escape From Ensenada, Ugly Sweater Party), Ryan Brewer (Larry and the Monsters, Never Been to Graceland), Julie Anne Prescott (Clown Motel: Spirits Arise, Meathook Massacre 4), Brett DeJager (director of Bonejangles and Cryptids), Mindy Gilkerson (The Second Coming, Art of the Dead), Nick Payne (All Eyez on Me, Kickboxer: Retaliation), and Maria Olsen (Paranormal Activity 3, Starry Eyes). Acclaimed musician and film composer Rocky Gray (The Barn, 10/31) will be providing the film's score. Illustrator William Skaar (Heavy Metal, Deanna of the Dead) designed the teaser poster for the film. Ed and the Living Dead indiegogo     Tee Public Store

According to IMDB, the budget for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens was an estimated $245,000,000.00. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here in saying the budget for the Redwood Theatre Company’s production of Brittany Law’s original musical parody The Farce Awakens was about 1/245,000,000th of that. Cardboard sets, Super Soakers for ray guns, and a droid costume consisting of an oversized t-shirt and bike helmet equal a show with production values that would make Edward D. Wood, Jr. blush. And yet there’s something charming about making due with the resources at hand, so playwright/composer/assistant director/dance choreographer/costume, set & prop designer Law joined with RTC’s Artistic Director/stage director/dance & fight choreographer Kot Takahashi to bring her creation to life on the quaint and comfortable Redwood Theatre Company stage in the heart of an industrial park in Healdsburg. Law’s script follows the screen story of the search for the long-lost Luke Skywalker while battling the villainous ‘First Order’ but manages to chop the film’s 126 minutes down to about 75 while adding 14 songs to the mix. All your main characters are there – Rey (Ms. Law), Poe Dameron (Mr. Takahashi), Finn (Isiah Carter), Kylo Ren (Ezra Hernandez), BB8 (Adriano Brown), Teedo (Griffin Tatum) as well as Han (Brett Mollard), Chewie (Alex Jimenez), Luke (Alex Sterling) and Leia (Shawna Jackson). Most of the cast fill in for various other roles from General Hux to a Rockettes-like kick line of dancing stormtroopers. The ensemble also has two members, Mathew Gravel and Jasmine Capriotti, from the Alchemia Arts program which supports adults with developmental disabilities through artistic expression. They all seem to be having a blast and their affection for the material is evident. I don’t know how they are able to sing with their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks, but they do and often quite well. Ms. Law and Mr. Hernandez are trained singers and did best with Ms. Law’s often clever compositions. With titles like “New Best Friend”, “Darth Inside of Me”, and “Totally Brand-New Cantina”, the challenge was often not just to sing, but to do it with a straight face. The cast managed to do that – mostly. It helps to know the canon of Star Wars, as there are plenty of references and in-jokes that mighty fly over the heads of the unaware. No matter, as there are plenty of other things at which to laugh. Comedic props to Adriano Brown for managing to be more than a sight gag with his BB8. Kot Takahashi’s overplaying (appropriately) as Poe is balanced out by Isiah Carter’s underplaying as Finn. Together, you might say they’re ham and wry. Brett Mollard and Alex Jimenez play Han and Chewie like the space equivalent of Laurel and Hardy (though I don’t expect many of their generation to get that reference.) Look, we’re not talking Shakespeare or Arthur Miller or even Ken Ludwig here. What we have is a group of talented young performers having fun with something that’s a pop cultural reference point for them. I may not be a member of the cult of Star Wars, but I find this company’s energy and enthusiasm for what they are doing infectious. I found myself smiling frequently at the silliness happening on-stage. The all-ages audience was certainly with them. They were there to have a good time. They got it. The Farce Awakens plays at the Redwood Theatre Company in Healdsburg through August 13th Fri & Sat @ 7:30pm, Sun @ 2pm * Admission is free but space is limited and donations are appreciated. * For more information, go to redwoodtheatrecompany.com
