It's a high speed episode this week, whether that's horses and stagecoaches sprinting across Apache territory or Fiats and vans driving dangerously around the narrow streets of Milan. Actor and film maker Greg Furman joins us to discuss a couple of classics from two different worlds of cinema. We start off with the seminal Hollywood western blockbuster, Stagecoach (1939), directed by John Ford and follow that up with Fernando Di Leo's The Italian Connection (1972) - during which we pay tribute to German-Italian legend, Mario Adorf, who we lost in April this year. The statute of limitations on spoilers has probably expired for Stagecoach, but we do call out Spoiler Territory for The Italian Connection. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 2:32:43 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch?

On this episode of the podcast Phillip is joined once again by author Jennifer Upton to discuss 1972's Poliziotteschi, The Italian Connection AKA Manhunt AKA Hitmen AKA Vengeance of the Godfather. This film was directed by Fernando Di Leo and stars Mario Adorf as Luca Canali. Phillip starts the show by giving all the general information about the movie with some trivia thrown in. It's then time for Listener' Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Then they discuss the film, the great chase scene in it, and the coolness of the character of Luca Canali. It's a fun movie and a great discussion. They then answer the question of whether they noticed anything that Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. It's then time to individually rate the movie. Finally they answer the question of whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. Phillip then gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; One Battle After Another (2025). Jennifer then gives her recommendations for the week; The Toxic Avenger (2025), Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025), and The Room (2003). It's then time for Phillip to promote next week's show where he will be joined for the first time by actress and artist Jennifer Ashley to talk about her life and her career. Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

A trio consisting of fun-loving Tony (Harry Baer), the more serious minded Ric (Al Cliver) and the bombastic Napoli (Vittorio Caprioli) take on the vicious Mazari (Jack Palance) in the 1976 Italian action film RULERS OF THE CITY (aka MISTER SCARFACE), another poliziotteschi classic from genre master Fernando Di Leo which includes a surprising amount of comedy amongst the usual array of car (and foot!) chases, motorcycle stunts and gunfights. Tony years for a relaxing life in Brazil but gets on the bad side of the mob, while Ric wants revenge for the murder of his father, which means they have to stay one step ahead of baddies as they play pool, have group sex and get themselves in deeper and deeper trouble. Get a sweet kiss of summer, with this episode recorded for our 2023 Summer School, all about the infamous 80s movie from Troma, SURF NAZIS MUST DIE! "Sometimes, it's all in the name. On this episode we dive deep into the classic Troma title SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. One of the most legendary exploitation films of all time we go left foot first (Because goofy footing cannot do!) into a movie often looked over because of its title, the company that released it, and that fact that it is PURE exploitation. This film is a gem and we hope you enjoy this UNCUT and UNCENSORED Summer School episode. The following episode is totally uncut and, oh I would say, 97% as close to as what it sounded like the moment we recorded. A little bit of editing was done on this episode and I am sure you can tell where, but it mostly is the entire uncut conversation. I hope you enjoy, thank you for supporting Death By DVD, whooo, SUMMER SCHOOL! Crack a beer and hang ten, it's time for surf nazis must die!"Want more?

Enjoy! Ladies and gentlemen, grazie alla pandemia (…) Sembra tutto ovvio e risaputo, invece no.Noi restiamo virtualmente a Torino: ci risentiremo prestissimo. Intanto, buon ascolto. ☻

It represents a different, more stylish type of poliziotteschi film and less noir-influenced than the Fernando Di Leo films. The premise is also different from both Italian Connection and Caliber 9 and is about vigilantes, drawing obvious comparisons to Death Wish that came out just two months prior to Street Law's release. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071330/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
