ELLEN DREW: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH (069) Whether playing the sweet girl next door or the world-weary casino boss's moll, ELLEN DREW was an incredibly versatile leading lady who was a major star in the 1940s and 50s. She made a career of playing a wide range of roles in various genres — from Westerns to comedies to dramas to horror movies. She was nicknamed “The Candy Store Cinderella” because she was discovered scooping ice cream in a candy store on Hollywood Boulevard. And who do you think discovered her? For your consideration: this radically underrated 1940 Paramount film featuring Basil Rathbone (Son of Frankenstein, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes), Ellen Drew (The Monster and the Girl) and Ralph Morgan (Night Monster) in a twisted tale of a psychiatric merry widower and the old doctor out to stop him. ALSO for your consideration, a freewheeling, late night conversation about the film by two published authors: regular host Jim Towns and returning guest host Jason Henderson (Castle of Horror podcaast/Castle Bridge Media), covering the twists and turns of the plot, and also where it diverges from your typical-era potboiler.

For our Universal 1942 episode, a very odd pairing: The Mad Doctor of Market Street, a mad scientist/ocean liner comedy/island adventure movie directed by low-budget noir auteur Joseph H. Lewis, and Alfred Hitchcock's first fully American movie, Saboteur, a fugitive-on-the-run thriller. We dissect the depiction of the fictional islanders in The Mad Doctor of Market Street and the movie's deconstruction of the science/magic dichotomy, before moving on to Saboteur's leftist take on fascism in the United States. And in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we talk about Ozu's A Hen in the Wind and Curtiz's Angels with Dirty Faces, which have nothing in common but very emotional endings.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s:      THE MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET [dir. “Alone In The Dark” es otra propuesta que maneja dichos elementos. Ejemplos: “Dead Space”, “Let 4 Dead”, “The Last Of Us”. Ejemplos: “Five Nights At Freddy's”. Ejemplos: “Dead By Daylight”, “Friday The 13th: The Game”. Here's a question: What makes a haunted house spooky if you've never been there?  How scary can a haunted house be if no one has repeatedly investigated it?  In other words, what is more frightening, the honest anecdotes about experienced paranormal activity in a haunted location or the unverified legends and lore of a place that send the frights of our imagination into overdrive?  And what makes a house haunted?  Is it the house or land itself, the activities and energy of its inhabitants, or a reciprocal combination of both?  These are questions that would be apropos for tonight's subject, a house known as the Wilbur-Hahn manor in Spokane, Washington.  The craftsman-style mansion came to life in September of 1916, when the heiress to the Hecla Silver Mine fortune, Sarah Smith, married playboy Ralston T. "Jack" Wilbur.  Jack Wilbur had used Sarah's money to hire an eminent architect to build a three-story, seventeen-room house in Spokane's historied and tony South Hill neighborhood.  For the princely sum of $75,000, the estate, sitting on nearly four acres of land, flaunted imported marble, gold-leaf carvings, and mahogany paneling inlaid with mother of pearl brought from China.  However, the newly minted Mrs. Wilbur didn't fancy the home, and with this and other tumults in the marriage, Smith, and Wilbur divorced in 1918.  The following notorious couple to occupy the house was Rudolph A. Hahn and his second wife Sylvia, thirty-two years his junior.  Hahn purchased the manor in 1924 and spent $50,000 on additions, like a swimming pool and lavish gardens with fountains and statues, along with rumored secret panels and tunnels.  Obtaining a doctor's license through a correspondence course, Hahn made a fortune performing electroshock therapy and illegal medical procedures for Spokane's well-heeled.  The money, which some believe Hahn had stashed on the property, fueled his love of wild parties, fast cars, boats, and racehorses, much to the neighbors' dismay.  But the excess and extravagant lifestyle of this real-life "Great Gatsby" would eventually lead to his bizarre murder in a seedy hotel downtown known as The New Madison Hotel.  Perhaps it was the raucous, illicit activities and extreme emotions witnessed by the estate that imprinted somehow.  Reports of arguing phantom voices or boisterous laughter, vanishing bloodstains, shadow figures, the apparition of a woman at the top of the stairs, and even screams and mysterious noises heard by passersby are forever bound to the house.  The lesson of such an infamous place as the Wilbur-Hahn manor is that no matter how private any owners are, they cannot curb the spirits or the legend of a haunted mansion, and spooky is as spooky does. Visit our website for a whole lot more information on this website, and seriously, we're talking a LOT more.

Mad science is a strange field of endeavor. It seems that there are few barriers to becoming a practitioner with the one real requirement being a narcissistic belief that the world needs to be changed and that YOU are the person to change it! For these types of roles Lionel Atwill was usually the perfect choice and this episode's film has his second onscreen shot at being the baddest, maddest doctor (or, actually, a chemist) he can possibly be. It is fun to watch Atwill squeeze every bit of evil out of the script and he is easily the best thing about the movie. Troy and I discuss THE MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET (1942) and ask the most obvious question first – Why does this movie mostly take place on a Pacific island? That title is an example of blatant false advertising! This bizarre tale of mad science in the South Seas does begin in San Francisco on Market Street but quickly shifts to a doomed cruise ship and then, after some footage from another movie, to an island inhabited by the usual Hollywood-style native stereotypes. These easily fooled islanders are soon convinced by the Mad Scientist (Atwill) that he is a god capable of resurrecting the dead. You don't have to be a genius to know that this is not going to work out well long term. The silly portrayal of these natives is only partially redeemed by the chief being played by the great Noble Johnson who manages to inject some dignity into the proceedings. And top billed Una Merkle is a real joy as the flighty Aunt Margaret who is on her way to marry a wealthy man in New Zealand. Past those elements your mileage may vary. If you have any comments or questions our email address is thebloodypit@gmail.com or we can be reached on the show's FaceBook page. We'd be thrilled to hear from you. The Mad Doctor of South Hill. That’s what they called him. And, it fit like a glove. The story of Rudolph Hahn is like an old black and white Film Noir from Orson Welles, a slow burn that reminds you none of us are getting out of this thing called life… alive. It was 1924 and the doctor was about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food cake. And his wife, well, she had a great big dollar sign where most women have a heart. But, like a tree falling in an empty forest, you can get away with just about anything when everyone is willing to look the other way. That’s just what money does.  It sweetens the world around you, hiding the bitterness you bring until it’s too late. The Mad Doctor’s wife swallowed her bitter pill in the form of a bullet.  A fatal dose that the cops said she delivered to herself. The Luger pistol found in her cold, dead hand. But, what about all the other bullet holes that riddled the room where she took her final breath? This wasn’t going to be an open and shut case, and it didn’t look like the doc was going to be much help. When the gumshoes showed up he was high on the devil’s drink, watching his racehorse graze on the front lawn, like there wasn’t a dead woman lying in a pool of blood just upstairs. But, to really understand this case we need to go back to the Scene of the Crime and back in time. Before television and radio. Before the world was introduced to the atomic bomb.Back when a mysterious pandemic was striking down millions of people all over the world.  Back when they started wearing masks every time they left their homes, school and work was canceled, and even churches were shut down. This episode includes information from the book Washington Myths and Legends by Lynn Bragg.

"Frankenstein-The Story Behind The Story" tells what inspired the original story of a murderous monster created from inanimate parts by an overreaching doctor, it was first published in 1820, was a major success worldwide, and has spawned countless books, movies, and debates regarding the limits we place on man's constant quest to play god by creating life artificially. Many of you are familiar with the story, but few people know what actually inspired 18 year- old Mary Sjelley to write it. Its a drama in itself, complete with illicit affairs, shared sex, mad doctors, adultery, two famous English authors, a candlelit villa on Lake Geneva, a wild dream, and a ghostly castle deep in Germany where untold experiments were being carried out on human cadavers, castle that we'll be introduced to by Robb Demarest, who led his Ghost Hunters International team there for ScyFy Network just a few years ago.

"I have already forgotten the secret, so I cannot reveal it even in spite of myself."In this episode, we have our very first real guest, Monsieur Armand Ruhlman, who apparently rules man. He cast me as the Mad Doctor in his bizarre-O serial The Earth People vs. the Carcass Eaters. So I'm on the carcass-eater's side, and I point out that the old folks are delicious.Armand and I talk for quite a while, and it's a good chance for those of you with questions about the show to have them answered in a somewhat coherent manner. At a certain point the audience rebels, things got nasty. But Armand was cheerful throughout, and will be coming back on the show soon, resplendent in his visual existence.I also met some People from the Future tonight, and I spoke to them for 2 minutes. It was really fun and I think they may ask me to return to the future on a regular basis. I really hope so. Their future is carefully imagined and full of adventures. I highly recommend you go see their show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind irregardless of whether they invite me to join them.I also have a virtual conversation with my ex-girlfriend. It was nice.
