let's talk about how do you raise your price? Have you ever considered raising your prices? I have conversations this conversation with many business owners and they're like, Oh my goodness. If I raise my prices, well, then you're probably going to lose clients. And my answer is, yes, you probably will lose some clients. And the reason why is because quite frankly, there are clients out there, there are people out there you might even be one of them. And it depends on the product and the service. Some products and services. We, we are, you know, penny pinchers on we're more price checkers. We're looking just for the cheapest price of that product or service, but in many other things that we do throughout the day or throughout the year or throughout our life, we are not price shoppers. We are value shoppers and most people by and large. Our value shoppers. Most people shop on value rather than price. For instance, I recently took possession and purchased a new RV travel trailer, 2021 travel trailer, 30 foot travel trailer. We didn't go for the very, very best, but I'll tell you one, it's pretty close. It's very, very nice. And we definitely went bigger than what we should have. And since we want bigger, we're supposed to stick with a 26 foot. But we ended up doing a 30 foot since we did that. We had to upgrade my Toyota Tacoma that was paid off. And I went for a much bigger truck and then did a lot of shopping around. I did not shop on price. I shopped on features and value, and I got exactly what I wanted and I, and I was 2,500 now I see that because many people, most people, quite frankly, and even you. Probably shop on value on most things, not on price, on everything, but here's the thing. When you consider those clients and customers that may leave you and stop purchasing from you, most of them are price shoppers and they're not loyal. Anyway. If they were to go see something that was cheaper down the road or cheaper from other, some other vendor, then they would jump ship anyway, without you even having to raise your prices. Right. The other thing is, is those people, most of the time, the people that are price shoppers, most of the time of the ones that take up most of your time, they're the ones that are taking up the time of your call center or your front desk, or calling you and taking up all of your time. And they're the complainer's and they want everything for less and they want a discount. And look, I'm not really speaking ill about anybody in particular, but I'm just stating it as effect. Now the people that there's some good beer that people that are basically make up 80% of your revenue or just 20% of your clients. 20% of your clients make up 80% of your revenue. That's the 80 20 role. It's true in everything. It's always going to be that way. So figure out who the 20% is, you contact them and you let them know, and you can send this out to everybody. They'll filter out, send out your blast, email, send out your blast, text message, send out your blast. Voice jobs. And if you don't know how to do any of that, let me know. ======================== Everything you know about your business and marketing is WRONG! www.APMasteryCoach.com/wrong ========================= Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/BusinessOwnerGrowth

There are many ways to measure business success that have little to do with chasing that tantalizing $1 million revenue dream. In this episode of All-In, Daniel focuses the conversation on creating abundance of the kind that drives Wally Carmichael both personally and professionally. As host of both the Men of Abundance and Business Owner Growth podcasts, Wally focuses on the intersection between building success and living successfully. He has developed best practices and tools to help entrepreneurs evolve their businesses while also weaving in all kinds of life lessons gleaned in a long career as a U.S. Army Medic, father, husband and active community member. Together Daniel and Wally share their perspective as dads who value being actively involved in their children’s lives and their belief that there are things in life far more important than the single-minded goal of becoming one of the 4% of entrepreneurial ventures that break the million dollar mark for profitability. As the saying goes, “Some of the best things in life are free.” Wally suggests that income is great but of equal value are things like an abundance of time with family and freedom from debt. This episode also features useful advice for business owners about using mentors to spur growth and the importance of delegating tasks (such as marketing, sales and accounting) to ensure you’re focused appropriately on the core business you’re cultivating. Lots of great perspective from two men who have made living abundantly their mission and their quality of family life the key to meaningful success.
This is the final episode of the show! After 128 episodes, I have decided to practice that I preach, and make the tough call on priorities and pressures in my life, which means this show will be setting with the sun today. Whether that's forever or for now is not relevant because "forever" is not happening today. With all the demands on my time, I have been facing my own burnout – something I've had as a central theme in many episodes in this show. To protect and love myself, I've taken an inventory of all the things that I am committed to, where they are in the grand scheme of building toward my goals, whether they've served their purpose, and how I might be able to move forward without them. Though it was a hard decision I've grappled with for several months, ending the show here made a lot of sense. Do a Day is not going anywhere, however, with all the resources at your fingertips, as ever. You can still get the book in paperback, Kindle, Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook and more. You can still do the Do a Day Masterclass, or sign up for 1-on-1 coaching with me. And the entire back catalog of episodes of the show will still be available for you to go back, listen to, and grow from. With all the stories and inspiration in the 127 episodes that I've released before this final one, I know there is at least one spark that every person in the world could use to start the flame that lets you Go Out and Do It! Respect for all my past guests: Season 1 I kicked the show off sharing the story of Do a Day. Charlie Gilkey shares about how being smart makes you strong. Evan Ruggiero reminds us through his cancer batter that rising up even when half of your world vanishes is possible. Amy Schuber taught us that you are the inspiration you seek. Ryan Caligiuri shared his mantra that there are no set backs, only set ups for what's next. One of my favorite artists, MC YOGI, talked about how all things grow in darkness Anne Sugar shared her battle with cancer as a way to see how you can trust your body even when it betrays you. Chris Wirth hit on his message of never quitting on living the life you deserve. David Ralph reminded us about the power in our lives if we connect the dots. Claude Silver shared her story (for the first time) of why she is who she is today and how that's showed her the importance of Heart in leadership. Elizabeth McCourt talked about the empowerment we can take from building our own resilience. Josh LaJaunie shared his story of overcoming extreme obesity--not just for himself, but for the world around him. Michael Nulty talked about his multiple suicide attempts and how he found rebirth out of depression. Mark Metry shared the importance of taking responsibility for your life and what you can achieve as a new person. My good friend, Aaron Keith Hawkins, talked about how we need to have influence over ourselves if we want to influence anyone else. Kelsey Abbott helped us Find Our Awesome through self-confidence and curiosity. She also gave me a quote I've used almost daily, "What you I say is about me. What you hear is about you." Dorie Clark reminds us of the important of perseverance and consistency if we want to achieve our greatest goals. Sonya Looney, world female mountain bike endurance champion, was just awesome, but had a key message around vulnerability and honesty with ourselves. She also gave me another gem of an idea around being stuck. Rather than being negative about the feeling, she recognizes it's a sign of something big being about to happen. Tim Fargo talked about the humility and balance we can find in unexpected places like failure. The amazing Dr. Jason Brooks shared the importance of being dedicated to finding your purpose and its transformative power on our lives. Jen Arnold shared her story around food and her weight and how that inspired her to change how we look at wellness and knowing ourselves. Lee Havern shared how he overcome depression and recognized the interconnectedness between mental and physical wellness. Emmitt Muckles left us charged up and recognizing that prosperity has nothing to do with money. Terri Levine, who lives in extreme, debilitating pain, showed how you can still find power and heart and use that to create something. Leigh Martinuzzi talked about finding his hidden Why and what that can unlock. The great Dick Vitale shared a power packed message of inspiration and making the choice to get up and move forward no matter what hits you, as he's done throughout his life. Season 2 Steve Gordon showed how falling down may be necessary to reach new heights Robb Holman talked about the power of letting go so we can find meaning and purpose Lindsey Heiserman inspired us to not let our past stories be part of our right now Charise Colbert shared her journey coming out of domestic abuse Sara Quiriconi talked to us about how to live free of all the cancers in our life Syd Finkelstein on how to be a Super Boss leader Ariana Robinson Danquah shared how to rise up when you're stuck in the middle Jon DeWaal gripped us with his story of falling off a roof and how that helped him see how to get through life's toughest transitions John Zeratsky talked about what he discovered to achieve the most, and it has nothing to do with productivity Josh Perry taught the power of gratitude even in the face of life's greatest challenges if you want to come through them thriving Mark Crandall shared his trauma story to help us see how facing our trauma's allows for growth Adam Schaeuble got us all fired up, and he also inspired with his approach to reimagining your life – and making it come true Sandy Vo talked about her journey to find clarity and peace despite a foundation of turmoil Cornell Thomas is the epitome of the "What's Next?" attitude winning over the "Why Me?" mentality Sandra Younger taught us her Come Back approach to be a victor, not a victim of tragedy Jenn Swanson talked about her journey off loss, gratitude and realization that you are your best investment Howard Jacobson shared how losing his father inspired his mission to fight diseases of ignorance with the wisdom of lifestyle Brooke Siem retold her amazing journey navigating her way out of a life of medication for mental illness into a life of discovery Tanur Badgley showed how to become a person of purpose through his journey starting with a fall off the side of a mountain Gary Bertwistle talked about the power of authenticity and discovering your mojo Frank King went into how thoughts of suicide taught him to go after what he really wanted, and why so many people need support as they face moments that lead them to these thoughts Mary Shores talked about the power of serving others as she went from dented to thriving Nick Elvery shared his journey from addiction to peak performance and what sparked the change Jaime Jay got vulnerable as he retold his story of multiple experiences with homelessness to being in a place of gratitude and contentment Dai Manuel talked about the importance of living as you need to, from your own perspective Blaire Palmer showed how the greatest thing we can bet on is ourselves Season 3 Dov Baron forced us to look at what's really going on, magnifying it, and then using that insight to truly grow Episode 056. You’ve probably heard it said that we, as humans, don’t know what we have until it’s gone. And that’s true, isn’t it? We overlook the good things we receive or grow bored of them quickly. But when we nurture a worldview and an internal sense of gratitude and real value, our lives become even fuller and more fulfilled. After transitioning from military service to life as a civilian entrepreneur and businessman, Wally Carmichael found himself chasing success in a lot of misguided ways. One moment in paradise changed all of that, and Wally began to put his focus on gratitude, abundance, and re-organizing his priorities to focus on his family. He founded the Men of Abundance podcast to help guide others to a similar mindset and continues to teach through the show and through coaching. On this episode of the I Am Movement podcast, Wally and Rock discuss actively practicing gratitude for what we have and all the good things that come when we do, the importance of recognizing your natural strengths while learning to understand (and even adopt) different ones, and creating a mindset of abundance in a world that emphasizes scarcity. Listen in to open your mind to the overflow of good things in your life.
Wally Carmichael was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up in a trailer park. His childhood and teen years were extremely formative, and we talk about that in the show. About a year after graduating HS, he joined the US Army as a Combat Medic, and spent 25 years on active duty. In that time, he traveled to 23 countries on five continents. During that time, he met and married his wife, with whom he shares three boys. Wally has always been an entrepreneur at heart, having started many business ventures and learning from many people, in person or through their books, courses, videos and podcasts. He's lived a wonderful life with many ups and downs, always choosing to learn from the adversities and count his blessings. He's at the point now in life where his biggest desire is to share his knowledge with other men and continue leveling up his life. Like we say in the Army "Constantly improve your foxhole". As he says, the 23 year old Wally certainly thought he had it all figured out because he knew everything. Of course he knows now he may never have it all figured out. But he's enjoying the journey. Now, go out and Live Your Life of Abundance and make sure you Pay It Forward. Key Points from the Episode with Wally Carmichael: Wally is an early-riser to be sure he’s there for his kids in the morning to start his day centered and focused on them. Following that, he does physical activity, has breakfast, and then digs into his work with his podcast, coaching and researching ideas to help impact business owners try to grow their business in times when they feel they just aren’t where they thought they’d be. “Aren’t where they thought they’d be” is a idea Wally knows about first hand. Wally grew up without much, living in a trailer with parents scraping to make ends meet. His dad who was kind and friendly, seemingly not wanting to hurt a fly. That also meant he was more interested in being Wally’s and his brother’s friend than father. He also was interested in hooking up with girls Wally or his brother would bring back to the house even though he was married. Wally’s mother left his father in the wake of the infidelity. Wally found himself out of money in college, unable to continue his education when his uncle suggested joining the military. Wally was deployed as a medic in Central America (Honduras and Panama) during the political and military unrest in the 80s. He ultimately spent over 25 years in the military, rising through the ranks and focusing on strategy work in hospitals across the world. That training really honed his strategy and business skills, also teaching him how much of it is mental vs. mechanics. He had the mechanics already, but learned the power of changing mindsets and plotting paths. At the end of his military career, he was in Hawaii working in the military hospitals through retirement, and then coming back to the same hospitals after retirement, getting to hone and deploy his strategy skills further. Wally made a point about his work. He chooses to do it. His pension from the military means he can get by without working, so his work is 100% by choice, which allows him to connect with it more personally. Specially, he sees how high the suicide rate is amongst small business owners, and especially when they’re also veterans. That problem gives him purpose in his consulting and coaching work as it’s not just about making more money, but saving lives while also making those lives better once they’re saved. The compassion from his medic skills translates through directly in this respect. After retiring, Wally had the idea to start Men of Abundance when he realized he was making enough money, living in Hawaii, had a great, loving family, and really didn’t want for anything. It struck him when his wife asked, “Wally, what are you striving for?” It helped him to start letting go of that chase of more, and recognizing the abundance in front of him. When we see people with “a lot”, we don’t know if they’re renting it, going into debt, or are even truly happy. What we find instead is that having your health, family and your needs met is far more satisfying than having too much and not being able to sustain. People say you can have everything you want, but the reality is you can’t. You can buy lots of things, but the trade off is that paying for them has a cost beyond the dollars. Buying stuff means not being able to afford the rich experiences that last beyond things, like family trips. This is not abundance. Being in debt or having to work more to pay for that stuff keeps you from enjoying it and those around you. This is not abundance. Wally isn’t against seeking more, but seek more while being grateful for what you have today. Abundance includes paying it forward and giving to others. We got into Wally’s childhood, being on food stamps and needing handouts. He talked about how he came to a point where he didn’t take handouts anymore. That was a moment he realized he needed to take responsibility for his needs and how to meet them. It’s not to say we don’t all need help sometimes, but to build the ability to sustain yourself is a mindset Wally developed. He had a reminder of his childhood when he was living out of his truck in Hawaii for 43 days while his family moved and he was between living situations. It was a strong reminder of the struggle and how to value what you have – getting out of his comfort zone, so to speak. What he realized is that the moments when he is most uncomfortable, he figures out how to do what he’s stuck with. He was trying to replace his day job income with his coaching business, and couldn’t, so he got uncomfortable as a forcing mechanism. As soon as he did, he was offered to telework from his day job for six months, giving him the space to build his coaching practice while not having to be in an office every day, keeping him away from getting to build it. Wally actually interviewed me for his show from the truck he was living in, totally unbeknownst to me! Today’s podcast episode presents a conversation between Gabe Arnold and Wally Carmichael. Carmichael is a shot-from-the hip entrepreneur who can help your business see fantastic results. Keep listening to learn about all the helpful information Mr. Carmichael provides. Mr. Carmichael provides. The Mindset of Abundance Of course, anyone who sets out down the entrepreneurial trail wants to be successful. The first key to attaining that goal is to start with the mindset of abundance. This idea is similar to the military outlook of always improving your foxhole. Since you are going to be spending a lot of time in one place, you need to be active and productive by continually fortifying it and improving it. You can accomplish this by continuing to do things that add value to other people as well as yourself. Moving From Struggling to Abundance To move from a place where you are struggling to a place where you have abundance, you need to start with mindset and perspective. First, put yourself into the mindset that abundance is not about money, it’s about resources, which include your connections, relationships, spiritual connections, health and anything else important to you as well as paying all of that forward. Then, you need to be brave enough to break out of the mold that everyone else is working from. You can’t just be good at offering the product or service you have. You need to be good at the business end, too. Plus, always keep in mind that your business not only provides a service for your customers, you are also providing a service to yourself. Changing the Scarcity Mindset It is easy to adopt an attitude of holding onto things and not wanting to squander anything. With this mindset also comes the attitude that if you give something then something is expected in return. This mindset can be inborn from a culture or learned from a family situation. But, if you have that mindset from any origin, you need to break out of it. The first step in changing that way of thinking is by changing the language you use. Keep in mind that this change cannot happen overnight. It takes time and effort. Try journaling, making a conscious effort to correct your word choices and incorporate your new vocabulary into your vernacular and writing the words you should be using on sticky notes so you can access them at all times. Consistently employing these tricks will help you change the words you use and ultimately your mindset. Coaching Working with a coach is a great way to forge forward in your entrepreneurial life. A coach can help you see things from a different perspective and help you grow. But, you need to be careful about who you choose for a coach. Although on the surface, someone may seem to be the ideal mentor, there is a chance that you only want part of what that person has and not the whole picture. When you seek out a mentor or coach, make sure you do your due diligence and get to know someone before you invest yourself in that person. What’s New With Wally? For you Business Owners who are Marketing, paid and organic... Why do you insist on not connecting with 99% of your prospects? Of the 1% you are marketing to, they are also looking at your competition. So, you may end up doing business with just 20% of that 1%, - at best. Let me explain... Conversions are Leads turned into paying customers. That sounds obvious. But too many business owners are just looking for clicks, likes, follows, hearts and other vanity metrics. Most companies view marketing as a competitive sport, and gear their ads, brochures, and websites to convince prospects that they're the best choice in a sea of competitors. Differentiation, innovation, and uniqueness are viewed as the key to marketing and advertising success. And rightfully so. Yet in many cases, your true competitors are actually NOT other companies at all. Instead, the real marketing challenge is to convince prospects that they need what you're selling in the first place… or in the case of window washing, to overcome their pre-conceived objections that are keeping them from buying your product or service from anyone. Look at the window washing flyers below. The first flyer extols all the wonderful advantages of doing business with this particular company instead of their competitors will likely fall on deaf ears. That's because very few people who are looking at a window washing ad (hanging on their front door, in a magazine ad, a letter or postcard in their mailbox, etc.) are even considering hiring a window washer right now. Advantages relative to other competitors are irrelevant. The fact is, very few people have ever said to themselves, "man, we sure got taken advantage of by that last window washing company we used. If only we knew how to choose the right company." Now that might be true for auto repair, remodeling or moving companies… but not for window washing. Ask the owner of a window washing company what percentage of people actually hire window washing companies versus just letting them stay dirty or doing it themselves, and they will tell you it's around 2% to 3%. The more important question then is: why would people NOT hire a window washing company? The main reason (as you might expect), is they think it simply costs a lot of money to have the service performed. So what do you think might happen if these window washing owners actually innovated their business in the area of pricing? How about putting customers on an easy payment plan where the window washer comes out and washes the customer's windows 4 times per year but breaks the payments into 12 easy equal monthly payments? The resulting headline (see second ad below) hits this objection on the head. See how this works so much better? I know it might not sound like a big deal to you, but if you're trying to convince people that you're better than your competitors when they've already decided they don't want to buy from any of you, then you're going to lose. Consider this... there are actually two sides to your business: First, there's what I call the “inside reality,” and second, what I call the “outside perception.” The inside reality encompasses everything you do... and everything that makes your business great. It's all of your skills: the people who work for you, your expertise, the way you service your customers before, during, and after the sale. It's your systems, your operational procedures, your commitment to excellence. It's your passion... and the way you conduct your business on a daily basis. Add these all together and they equal your value to the marketplace. That's what I call the inside reality. So how's your inside reality? If you asked your customers why they buy from you, they could probably tell you something quantifiable, specific and instantly obvious. They could point to specific benefits they enjoy when doing business with you. Then they would say things like... “That's why I do business here, that's why I refer my friends to come here, and that's why I'm a loyal customer. That's why I'm willing to pay more here... and why I keep coming back.” That's your inside reality. So your inside reality is all about what you do and what you are that allows you to perform better. However, your outside perception has to do with how customers and prospects perceiveyour company. The outside perception is developed through the interactions that your prospects and customers have with your business. Your customers will draw on their past buying experiences with you to form the outside perception of your business. But here's the problem. If you provide unmatched and unequaled customer service... and your customers absolutely love you... none of that matters to your prospects if, number one, they don't even know you exist as an option... or number two, they see your marketing and advertising and, because of your inability to market your business properly, their perception is that you're no different, or no better, or no worse than your competitors. I would estimate that well over 95% of all businesses are completely inept when it comes to marketing... and the end result is that your inside reality and your outside perception are perceived to be different. You see, regardless of how good you are, regardless of your inside reality, your prospect isn't going to be able to figure out your trueinside reality based on your marketing. You simply appear to be just another business that sells whatever it is that you sell. And don't say, “Well, that' OK because I have a salesperson... and when they get in front of my prospects they'll be able to educate them and close the sale.” Listen, that's a great theory, but I can flat guarantee that even your best salesperson is never going to close a prospect who doesn't know you exist... and therefore never bothers to contact you in the first place. What's your outside perception? Go grab your marketing, look at your ads, take a look at your website. Is it instantly obvious, specifically and quantifiably, what makes you better and unique and different? Do you show your prospects how to judge your industry, what factors they need to consider when deciding what to buy, and how you provide greater value than any of your competitors? Your website is beautiful. And I know you're so proud of it. However, I'm will to bet that your website is not performing like you expected it to. That's OK. This one simple strategy will certainly increase your revenue but $10k to $50K ore more. Depending on your industry. What I will do in this short podcast is teach you a simple system for marketing your business... to a point where it becomes instantly obvious to your prospects that they would be an idiot to do business with anyone other than you... at anytime, anywhere or at any price. In this short presentation, I'm going to teach you how to achieve massive leverage with your marketing, meaning simply that you'll make more money for the same time, the same money, and the same effort you're expending right now. The marketing system I'm going to teach you today is based on unchanging principles of human nature that dictate that people always want to make the best buying decision possible, and therefore... marketing's job -- your job -- is not to yak incessantly about how great you are... or how low your prices are. Your job is to position your prospective buyer's so they have total control over the decision-making process... based on them having enough quantity and quality of information to determine that they're receiving the most value for the price they pay. The system I'm going to teach you is truly a breakthrough in marketing and advertising, yet it's simple and easy to understand. We have thousands of client successes to prove that this works literally every time it's implemented properly, regardless of what business or industry you're in. I'm going to introduce you to some very common-sense principles of marketing that you'll be able to instantly validate and embrace... principles that will give you a clear vision of what your marketing is supposed to look like and, just as importantly, what it's not supposed to look like. I want to show you the fundamental formulas and strategies to not only make your marketing work better... but to enable you to create what we call "competition-crushing" marketing. I want you to see how powerful all of this is... allow you to comprehend what the possibilities are for your business... and what a significant advantage you'll hold over your competitors when you implement it. This system has been successfully implemented in over 400 different industries, including business coaches, social media consultants, contractors, business brokers, accountants, financial companies, retail stores, real estate companies, home builders, restaurants, software companies, doctors, dentists, remodelers, internet companies, manufacturing companies, and anything and everything else you can think of. We've even used it to help a $10 per hour dog walker build his business to over half a million dollars. Our revolutionary new lead generation system works with all sizes of businesses... from start-ups... clear up to Fortune 500 companies. But our true passion lies in working with small businesses averaging $2 million in revenue and below. This system will let you FINALLY quit competing on price... and start selling your product or service for what you're really worth. You'll drive in more leads... and often see an increase in your advertising response by 2... to more than 100 times. You'll also convert a higher percentage of those leads... and make your salespeople into superstars. You'll increase the amount of your average sale... and your list of clients that pay, stay and refer will increase significantly. In short, you'll get a bigger bang for your marketing buck. But maybe best of all, you will FINALLY have total control over your marketing and lead generation results. So let me ask you one simple question. I’m Donnie Boivin and this is Success Champions. Miss Chalene, welcome to the show my dear please tell us your story. Chalene Johnson: Well thank you so much for having me. Where do I begin right? Donnie Boivin: You know, you like long walks on the beach and… (both laugh) Chalene Johnson: Well I think probably much like you, most people know me from fitness. So I've had three number 1 fitness infomercials; the infomercial that’s on TV right now called PiYo. That’s the number 1 fitness infomercial, actually this week it was the number 1 infomercial over all categories. Donnie Boivin: Oh wow, good for you. Chalene Johnson: It was the number 1 infomercial in 2017... Donnie Boivin: Is that the whole, “but wait there’s more” thing? Chalene Johnson: Totally. Donnie Boivin: Alright, cool. Chalene Johnson: Yeah, i'm a student of those things. And I hosted it myself and filmed it myself on my iPhone. Donnie Boivin: Right now that’s killer, well done! Chalene Johnson: Yeah, thanks. Well the interesting story about it is, to kind of take listeners back for a little bit which is why I kind of said it’s odd to me that people know me from fitness... that’s just where i'm known, if you will but it’s not who I am. It's certainly not what I expected to have success. I've been a serial entrepreneur all my life. My first business, I started doing at age 15 informally. Flipping cars like buying used cars and fixing them up and having them painted and then reselling them and making enough money to be able to pay my way through college. While I was in college at Michigan State this turned out into a more legitimised business if you will and I rented a lot of land from the state of Michigan and I held these big; I guess you could call them almost fares where on a Saturday private owners would come in, they’d park their vehicles and they would be the sales person for their own vehicle and then private people who wanted to buy from a private individual would come to the lot as well and I used to take a cut on both ends and that was called the Michigan Auto Swap. Donnie Boivin: Fantastic. I gotta ask, so you were flipping cars to get through college? Chalene Johnson: Yes! Donnie Boivin: That had to be a hell of a pick up line at a bar, right? Or at a party or anything… living on flipping cars Chalene Johnson: Yeah, you know and we talked a little bit about my mindset before we started and that was my mindset was always like, “Ok, so this is the problem, I should solve this problem.“ And the beautiful thing about solving a problem is that it usually solves a problem for a lot of other people and then that becomes a business Donnie Boivin: Yeah Chalene Johnson: And so for me, being a 18 year old petite and 5’2 blonde girl living in Michigan, mof my transactions were in Detroit. So I would drive down there, you know by myself with a purse full of cash to look at a title in some strange dude’s apartment in like the worst part of Detroit, it just wasn’t safe. It wasn’t convenient, it was a hassle, people make an appointment to see your vehicle and then they cancel. They show up and they’re shady. So for me it was like a convenience, like I can do this all in one day. I can look at a tonne of vehicles and this would be a convenience to the buyers who were also trying to get directions to go see someone’s vehicle. We didn't have cell phones then so we were solving a problem at the time and that kind of led to my each and every business after that. I was like ok, everyone in my family is obese on both sides or overweight I should say, struggle with their weight and I don't want to be that and they all diet. So dieting must NOT be the solution, i'm going to exercise. But I hate exercise? So I started creating these really cool, kind of funky workouts that took music and sound effects, and hip hop, and taekwondo and I kind of blended them all together and solved my problem and eventually, it solved a lot of other people’s problems. But I didn't get into that because I was an expert in fitness, or in nutrition, or diet or kinesiology. I got into it because I was solving my problem. Donnie Boivin: That’s awesome, you got a Billy Blanks Taebo back in the day kind of vibe… with the punching, kicking and everything else workout so… Chalene Johnson: Yeah, totally. And I really tried to capitalise to be honest, on that craze because it was at the time the number 1 fitness craze. I developed a program for health clubs called Turbo Kick, this is in 1999. And eventually I started teaching other fitness instructors how to teach this format, we grew to have certified over 60 000 fitness instructors. In I don’t know how many countries. Eventually that caught on to major health clubs, now all the major health clubs all around the world and at the time because Turbo was such a huge cultural success, all the infomercial companies were looking for the next program that didn't require equipment... Donnie Boivin: Right, right. Chalene Johnson: ...so it was just timing and business savvy and we just started getting phone calls from infomercial companies that were interested in bringing what I was doing for fitness clubs and wanted to bring that to consumers. Donnie Boivin: Well thank you for number 1, not bringing another piece of equipment in the house that people are hanging their clothes on. You know so, you should know people buy all that crap and it ends up in some corner of the house and so, that’s awesome, So you literally go from hustling cars, flipping cars - excuse me Chalene Johnson: I know, I was hustling. Donnie Boivin: Right, right. To developing a huge swap meeting for cars, to a fitness craze then to slowly I understand building an empire… Chalene Johnson: Well you know, it’s always just taken on it’s normal progression if you will, except that I think it’s important to say that because I never intended to be in fitness and I always attributed my success not to my knowledge on fitness but my knowledge of business so I always felt really insecure around “the fitness industry”. I kept thinking they were going to call me and ask for my credential and so I got certified by I don’t know, probably like 20 different organisations because I wanted to over qualify. I was so insecure about the fact that I didn't belong there and then there came a point where I had so much success where people knew me for fitness, that I was defensive and angry about it because I was like, “it's not who I am…’ i'm here to because I understand people and I understand solving problems and there’s a point at which I became resentful and also uncomfortable with the fact that, that’s what I was known for Donnie Boivin: Yeah, that’s interesting because I find this quite often with entrepreneurs is that they get this natural gnat of constantly creating something, doing something, they’re always fiddling, what's the next thing, what's moving forward but they always seem to get slammed in some success from niche, right? That’s a lot of what the brand becomes. It's an interesting conundrum So you didn't start flipping cars until you were 18... Chalene Johnson: No, I started at like 15. Donnie Boivin: Okay, alright - younger. Where does the entrepreneurial bug come from? I'm always curious about where people start getting the end of the game. Was it a lemonade stand, was it the mowing lawns, was it selling girl scout cookies and or was there a moment where you were like ok, I got to start making money? Chalene Johnson: Yeah, I don’t know about you i've interviewed 100s of entrepreneurs and I often find that they were either raised by an entrepreneur or influenced by someone; someone’s father was an entrepreneur. For me that was, and I know your story is a little bit late if i'm not mistaken... Donnie Boivin: Yeah, yeah it is. I'm a late bloomer, it took me ‘til forty so… (laughs) Chalene Johnson: ...that’s awesome. For me it was being raised by my father; my mom and dad. My father was an entrepreneur and a really positive money mindset so the people out there listening who have children… things he never said, they never said like, “Money doesn't grow on trees”; “We can't afford that.” My parents would say well, if that's what you want that's exciting. Let’s put together a plan and you can figure out a way to earn that and once you earn it you can decide if that's what you want to spend your money on And so it never crossed my mind that my parents must buy me a car, or buy me clothes or anything. From the time I was about in 6th grade I didn't ask for even lunch money, maybe out of a sense of guilt? I just believed that oh, whatever it is I want, I can figure out a way to be resourceful; to rake lawns, to flip cars, to do whatever... work at my dad’s store to make my own money and find a way. It was always a “find a way” kind of attitude and even when I said I wanted to go to college at that point. I neither knew I’d decide to go to college, we certainly didn't have the money for it and so it was just not a big deal. My dad said this is a great idea, let's figure out a way for you to make more money. And it was his idea to take the money I’d saved and go to the state auction and buy a used vehicle and flip it. Donnie Boivin: Oh that's amazing, I think a lot of parents… I dont have kids so, but being around my nieces, nephews and a lot of other kids I often see that the kids are a direct reflection of their parent right? So if the parents have money problems like you said, the kids are a direct reflection, you know? So it’s pretty powerful that your parents instilled that sense of, “if you need it go get it”, “if you need it done figure it out.” Chalene Johnson: It certainly created problems for me later in terms of being a workaholic and in a very serious sense like, nearly destroyed my marriage and me emotionally because having gone through some dark times, with that I was able to break the belief; the false belief that I didn't have value or purpose unless I was making people money. That's what I was known for, so if I had a failure it meant I personally was a failure and that I'd let people down and you know, you have to have a lot of failure to have success and that was hard to take. Donnie Boivin: You know what’s is interesting is I think a lot of people who have the entrepreneurial bug or they have this entrepreneurial business owner vibe, they go for the stuff right? Meaning they go through the accolades, the “atta boys” of people going you're awesome, you're amazing or they go for the over the top cars, houses, mansions... you know something along the lines of that, why do you think that is? Chalene Johnson: Can I tell you what like really bugs me? Donnie Boivin: What’s that? Chalene Johnson: I think and maybe you can answer this for me ‘cause I notice a lot of male entrepreneurs do this, they have 5 Lamborghinis in their driveway and they’re like walking onto their private plane... I'm sorry but it looks douchey to me like I just don't get that but I know this couple that do that, and they’re not like that right? Do you know what I mean? Donnie Boivin: It comes from the locker room right, so you’re in the locker room with all the guys hanging out; it's the flexing the muscle; if I look like a badass then I'm a badass nobody's gonna mess with type thing? Prison yard, if you’re the baddest dude in town nobody's gonna mess with you and so ok when you get accolades and you get the success that most people don't, so people are like oh that dudes got it Chalene Johnson: I always think, oh they’re renting those... Donnie Boivin: A lot of them are and a lot of it’s coming out nowadays, B&B mansions and all the jet and the other BS is coming with it which is cool to see Chalene Johnson: But no judgement I mean I for sure had my thing and I think it comes from a sense of inadequacy and so I needed to prove to people that I was of value, I needed to create value for them and it wasn’t the money for me and I would give it away. It was me being to be the top salesperson, it was me being able to pay for things for other people; or to give them to give them sales or to do well for others... the money was like a scorecard and where I felt like I was scoring I didn't realise until later, was my worth Donnie Boivin: The accolades was a way you felt by making other people feel good or whatever else along that journey. Why do you think it went that direction vs the stuff? Chalene Johnson: Oh I know why because I figured when I went to therapy, for me my parents when I was in like I think maybe 4th or 5th grade my father was a liquidator so what he did was go into bankruptcy court and buyout businesses that were on the brink of disaster or maybe there losing 30 locations and he would liquidate the assets. It was in Detroit, it was cutthroat it wasn't the most I guess upscale people that he was dealing with, it was kinda shady and I remember they got their big - my parents got their big deal ever... they got this chain or a bunch of locations in a chain were closing, they purchased the assets and all of the assets were in a warehouse and he spent his last dime to make this deal happen and someone set fire to the building and they didn't have the assets. So my dad in an effort to teach me about money I remember him bringing me into his office and closing the door and having me sit down in his big leather office chair and he said to me that this is your bank book, it was my little blue bank book and he said I'm gonna teach you today how your money make you money. So you know that your mom and I have had this fire we're gonna be ok, we're gonna be ok but what I'd like to do with your permission is borrow your money and we’re gonna do is pay you back more. I know that was a lesson in interest but when you're like in 4th and 5th grade that felt like I was responsible right now for my parents… Donnie Boivin: Right Chalene Johnson: And felt a little bit like a hero and a lot of pressure, a lot of weight but because there was so much like praise and recognition and I was the oldest child. I was the child they went to and borrowed her money so it just installed in me a false belief, it wasn't at all his intentions, his intentions were positive. You know how people, children again interpret things and that's how I interpreted it and I held on to that message unknowingly until, my addiction to work just nearly killed me. I was sleeping like 3-4 hrs a night because there is always more to do, it was always great and I was always you know, because the more you do the more opportunities are for failure and that failure was so personal so I just never ever stopped trying to - as you said Donnie come up with that and tinker with that next new thing Donnie Boivin: And I question people who are like serial entrepreneurs that continue to go for it, my question is why do they have to continue to push themselves to the brink of finding rock bottom before they start making the change? Chalene Johnson: Well, they don't really don't know you and I used to think like this is something everyone has to go through because you're right I have heard many people’s stories where they get to that point and then they realise that ok it doesn’t have to be this way, that's another way to do it and I learnt from someone who was a workaholic. I have taught my children both you have their own businesses the right way and to see them succeed and have the success that they’ve had and balance and they know how to outsource, they know how to use additional help, and they know what it means to be out of balance. So I think it's just there's no school really fit for entrepreneurs you can't say business school really is a place to learn anything about business Donnie Boivin: Well I don't think you can teach entrepreneurs, I think you can tell somebody that you can start a business, go get punched in the face and then you can learn. You can teach them finance and everything else but it takes the individual person, in my opinion I mean everything I thought of what an entrepreneur meant prior to being one was absolutely wrong. Then launching my own business, it wasn’t until I started blowing s*** up and things started breaking and chaos ensued where it was, ok I gotta figure the s*** out. Chalene Johnson: So the only way you can actually teach somebody to be an entrepreneur, I don't know… I’ve met with lots of young people who are at the beginning stages of starting a business and have been able to teach them the things I wish I'd known that would have helped me to avoid that bottomless pit. Yeah obviously my kids have been raised in it so I was really conscientious of the messaging that we were sending to them, how we talked about business and a person's value and their identity; which has lead me to the piece of my entrepreneurial life, my professional life that I'm not as well known for is the lifestyles which is way more than selling a bajillion, tens of millions of DVDs cut People know you, it’s really small cut like you don't get rich from doing really TV but everybody knows you. You know me from fitness but what's really made our lifestyle possible and what really fulfills me is the businesses that we started back in the mid-2000s where we were teaching people how to be smart entrepreneurs and have smart success and not stressed success. And there is a methodology to teaching that and it really starts with the mindset and understanding that if you have your foundational pieces and you understand the significance and importance of growing your dream, by growing your team and how to start like how do you hire the first person for 5 hours a week, who is that person, how you hire them and how do you help people adopt that mindset before they even need the person Before making money and so I do believe it's possible and it is my wish that people - because a lot of people are turning into entrepreneurs today. Amazon makes it possible, Shopify, so many marketplace websites have made it easy for someone to jump in with an idea, grab a domain name for 9 dollars, start a business tonight and start making passive income online. My objective is I want help people to understand that there's a right way and a really stressed out, needless way to do it. Donnie Boivin: Well and I love that and it’s truly cool to hear you put it in that regard because I'm constantly telling people look, if you want to build a business go punch yourself in the face 20 times and then start. (laughs) Chalene Johnson: That’s your way. Donnie Boivin: Because look, no matter what you’re gonna take a licking you’re gonna screw something up. It's a matter of in the words of my favourite quote my fans are gonna laugh because I say this quote all the damn time. Rocky Balboa, “It's not about how hard you can hit but how hard you can take a hit and keep moving forward.” And I think maybe that's more my point of trying to teach somebody that takes that hit and keep ploughing forward. In society we’re brought up, most people are you know... what everybody else thinks about them is what matters most in their in life. Turning off that noise or like gremlin you hear is tough for people to really really really do. Most people don't have that tenacity and grit to keep pushing forward when life stacks up against them so, good on you for creating a safe environment for people to fail and have encouragement around them you know to keep moving forward with what they want Chalene Johnson: Yeah, and steps right? Like so it's it's helpful to have, like they say success leaves clues and actually will leave a blueprint for you. Most successful people will tell you exactly what they did wrong and what they did right and you should listen to them. Take into consideration of course the time because when your mentor or the person who you admire when they built their business if it was it was even 5 years ago - listen to the things they have to say when you hear entrepreneurs say this is what I wish I would have done differently, listen because that's a pretty big clue. Donnie Boivin: Well a buddy of mine, Wally Carmichael runs the Man Of Abundance podcast, one of the favourite things he ever said to me he goes, “Don't listen to the guys like Gary Vee now, go listen to what he did 10 years ago as he was building his empire... listen. I’m glad you’re running slightly opposite on the spectrum to him Chalene Johnson: Yeah, i’ve had him on my show and went head-to-head. Donnie Boivin: I'm sure because he's gonna put people in an early grave, so you know I mean there's 17… Chalene Johnson: I know, you know there’s some females doing that too now... Donnie Boivin: Well I'll work on getting them on the show so I can battle them as well because I'm on your team girl because I own a farm.Thursday afternoons at noon, days done I'm home working on the farm. That was just a plan before I start my business, that we built this life for the two of us. Oh now that doesn't say that we haven't had our struggles along the way figuring stuff out but we winning the game today not being the workaholic, you can find a cool life without killing yourself along the way Chalene Johnson: Yeah Donnie Boivin: So I'm really more interested in the business side of things so what are all the businesses you actually have? Chalene Johnson: Oh that's an interesting question, it's multiple streams of income it slowly evolve... sometimes I fear triggering that people to need to do more when I share with people like all the different streams of income that we had so I want to preface it by saying it's something that we built piece by piece, one piece at a time... Donnie Boivin: Can I say one thing in there really quick? Chalene Johnson: Sure Donnie Boivin: Guys, get it right before you start the second one Chalene Johnson: That's right. Donnie Boivin: Go ahead, go ahead… Chalene Johnson: For sure. And then give it time too so that you can really get it right and tweak it and fix it and then enjoy it and then once it starts to become a little more of passive… passive income, little less work and you are intrigued by another area - I never go eating because of real money makers. It’s this is what I'm passionate about and my husband I'm fortunate enough that he loves that I get geeked up and obsessed with things and that's right when he just sets up orange cones so no one gets hurt along the way but if you're really, really passionate about something… Someone said to me the other day like you're always reinventing yourself and I didn’t reinvent myself at all but I fell in my passion Donnie Boivin: I would say you’re evolving. Becoming a better version of yourself... Chalene Johnson: We always are and I don't worry about how does this fit with my brand, it's just this is what i’m obsessed with right now. So we sold our fitness businesses to the fitness giants Beachbody, I don't know like, years ago but I still partner with them Beachbody on consumer projects... Donnie Boivin: Smart, on their part Chalene Johnson: Haha, thank you. And so then addition to that my husband and I have served thousands and thousands of entrepreneurs, now hundreds of thousands through a couple of different courses one is called the Marketing Impact Academy and it’s an all online basically virtual mentorship program we teach people how to go from idea to making money and giving them that financial freedom, like the freedom of their schedule and teaching them that blueprint because most people do it in all the wrong ways. We teach them to start with their brand, and then to build the platform and then how to really drive sales in every way whether it’s paid ads, video infomercial, Facebook, Instagram and social you name it. There's a formula that people feel like they're serving and not selling and that's probably been and it has been our bread and butter that has been a great joy for us, it's been so fun. Teaching people and giving people that freedom and then aside from that I’ve written a couple of books, one’s a New York Times bestseller and coming out on April 16 that all about how to get healthy and happy and confident from the inside out using nutrition; it's a book it's designed to help people lose weight but to lose weight and keep it off the right way because weight-loss shouldn't be so difficult and I got thrust into that industry kind of by accident. I just got caught up in the diet and fitness culture, something I didn't know much about but I like I start that book off with an apology because I really didn't take the depth of my responsibility as seriously as I should have. I've just regurgitated what everybody else was saying without ever asking if there’s really science around this? Is it really good for us? Should we be doing this? My own health suffered in that industry and I watch so many other people suffer from things like orthorexia and just depleting their body fat so low that they were experiencing amenorrhea and just and never feeling good enough and of course we know what everyone's always known that 95% diets don't work. But it does work, right? So when we say that but that's well then why is everyone around on a diet? Well everyone’s on a diet because it does work but if you are you finding success by weight loss and ignoring the fact that everyone gains it back so I went to discover by working with a scientist is if there’s a way to master your metabolism so that you can be healthy and you can be at the way you’re supposed to be but not be a slave to food and fitness and not feel like certain things have to be ruled out forever. It was part of a process that I had to go through and I was so passionate about it like I said to my husband this is direction we're going in now because I have an obligation, a responsibility to get this right Donnie Boivin: And I love the rawness behind the starting of with the apology, what I truly respect about that is I think a lot of people go and they're doing the Lamborghini, they’re doing the big houses, they are saying look how awesome I am - you just said you started off let me tell you how I screwed it all up. That's beautiful because I'm excited I have a book fiction finally coming out that i’ve been working on and I think it’s going to be shock for the people that know me cause I'm actually walking through how I always thought I was a whole lot more successful than I was and I'm breaking down you know the self sabotaging and you know, how I was trying to put myself on a pedestal and all that's all but, I love that starting out that way because I think you're going to impact some more lives by saying hey you see me as this, let me show you how I really am Chalene Johnson: Yes I tell the story about how on one of the the infomercial, I found you know along the way I'm making a few enemies because I'm telling the dirty dark secrets behind the fitness industry but we have to because you see those people on Instagram myself included, and you go #goals I want that body but to get into the state that like for example that I was at my absolute leanest… which I had a producer call my husband and say hey for this next series it would really help sales if she could get extra lean and at that point my body fat was already so low that I wasn't getting my period and I was already working out two and a half hours a day and barely eating any food Donnie Boivin: So disgusting, I mean... sorry it's f****** nuts, why? Chalene Johnson: Yeah, yeah... and because I wasn't telling anyone this and I didn't have to do this I could have to turn down the project so I take responsibility there I didn't have to do it but because I was like yeah I don't wanna get kicked out of this club I want this opportunity I'll just exercise more - 4 hours isn't that bad. I‘ll eat less and I literally if I eat I'm ashamed like I have shame around what I was eating which is virtually nothing and so bad, so processed and disgusting just barely sustaining on any food in order to drop without those extra pounds in the most unhealthy way and then here I am such a hypocrite, smiling in the video saying, “you guys just 30 mins a day,’ bulls***. That wasn't true and it wasn’t that I was lying to the consumer, I wanna be clear about that I write this in the book ,131 method. It believed what I was saying, I just didn't believe it was ever going to be possible for me because I believed I was broken, I was floored, that I destroyed my metabolism. What I didn't realise until later on, was that all of us were doing that. Nobody could do that and in 30 minutes a day and eating tons of food every 2 hours... nobody was doing that and it wasn't until I had my own health scare with my brain health. I had a brain scan at the Amen Clinics and they ran a nutrition panel on there, a hormone panel and they said I got a failing grade. So I'm on TV about these number 1 fitness programs, I have millions of people doing my programs and following what I'm saying and my health is getting a failing score. What have I done? What have I done to myself and what have I done to other people by being negligent and not listening to my own intuition, not doing some research. Why are we telling people this? Is it founded, do we know? Is this the right thing to do or I was just trying to sell things? I literally on that day just walked away mentally, I didn't tell anyone I was just like I'm not gonna do this to my kids. I've done this to myself and I've got to figure this out Donnie Boivin: That's awesome you know, and I hope people are hearing this because I think nowadays a lot of people are regurgitating all the things they are hearing on social media. There's so much out right now and so people are giving advice to some other guru who’s just got whatever jackass method going on, so they’re regurgitating it versus going through it and see if it f****** works. Chalene Johnson: Amen. Another thing is, you and I both talked about entrepreneurs that are selling that “drive yourself into the ground” mentality, you've got to look at their whole life. I was saying when you pick a mentor look at all the areas of their lives. If they're on their fifth marriage, they’ve never been to one of of their kids’ events, they might have all the things but it's pretty clear they’re a tortured individual. Running from something, they have to be on a plane, they have to tell you how things are doing, have to tell you about their accolades, they have to flex, there's a reason why. Don't get caught up in that because it will not bring you happiness Donnie Boivin: I think what you said, to watch the entire story because just because you watched one video; that’s not a story. Go watch a couple and go see and you'll see after the guy does a 1 minute walk in front of the Lamborghini and the next minute in front of a crowd and he's not that machismo, “over the top” guy is the biggest one that I see. The newest trend that I'm starting to see is a fake cry Chalene Johnson: I haven't seen too much of that yet, looking forward to it (laughs) Chalene Johnson: When we are done, can you tell me who to go watch? Donnie Boivin: Yeah, absolutely. It's just funny because of the content nation screaming together content content content, they're not wrong. You need to put out a ton of content out but you need to put out a real story. The one thing I do like about Gary Vee that he does say is, document your life. That’s the thing right now, take people on a journey with you, I struggle with a lot of the other stuff... Chalene Johnson: You know, listen when I had him on my show, we both respect him obviously. But what I heard - if I can break him down like I'm his therapist, I met a guy who didn't get his dad's attention in his formative years... his dad was working. Donnie Boivin: And you hear it, he's like his dad drug him into it and here we go again breaking down Gary Vee, his dad drug him into the liquor store and that kind of stuff you know? It's funny to listen to those guys talk because he always says he won the lottery with his parents and I sometimes wonder when he says that phrase is he trying to convince himself or us? Chalene Johnson: Oh, yeah… or is he trying to convince his own son? Donnie Boivin: Right, right? So you gotta look at that all the way through, it's just to see where - it's funny I have a group on Facebook and my family's in there and I got a bunch of smartass brothers, my dad I mean everybody in my family. If you don't have thick skin you just don't walk around the family Chalene Johnson: Perfect Donnie Boivin: And when I first joined the group and we were hanging out I thought, oh snap everybody's gonna meet the family. How is that gonna represent my brand as I'm out there in the marketplace and now... people are feeding my family ammunition to bust my chops even more so like the whole family is in it for the ride, which is a lot of fun. I think you do for people who will look at how people are treating the marketplace, how they talk about their family, how they're talking about the things they are doing, it's gonna paint a picture of their life and their journey along. Chalene Johnson: And not everyone has that a perfect family situation and that's ok too but I just think that Donnie I think mainly what we both saying is, you gotta be authentic and if you try to copy someone else's formula in terms of what their life looks like, now what you gonna do is rent up a bunch of white Lamborghinis, now what you gonna do stand in front of somebody else’s yacht, that's just gonna blow up in your face and I think we're getting to a place where we”re too savvy for it What does concern me, two areas that I just realised right now on this podcast that we are ok with these areas being addictive. Like if you have a gambling addiction, that's a bad thing. If you have a drug addiction, that's a bad thing. But if you are addicted to exercise, or if you’re addicted to health, or addicted to business; those things we commend and we celebrate. We celebrate the ultra fit, we celebrate the ultra successful, but at the end of the day if you are doing it because you can't be present in your real life whatever it is - whether it's, you're addicted to running or you're addicted to business if it's something that you are doing to distract you from being present - it's an addiction and as damaging as an addiction to opioid, gambling or anything else... they can still destroy marriages At the end of the day what makes us happy is not money or things, it's people. Donnie Boivin: Yeah, you know it's funny to hear you say that. My most downloaded episode i’ve ever done is called, “You can't run away from you.” And I just tell my story of me growing up and when times and life got tough I moved and went somewhere else, I went to join the Marine Corps, I went up to Saint Louis you know all the way through and it was because it was my form of escapism. Everytime it got tough i got the f*** out. And I think everybody kind of has that escapism outlet, and for some people like you're saying it's business. Having a healthy love of business and growing and creating those worlds is a lovely thing - as long as you doing it as you said, not escape from something else. Chalene Johnson: Keeping ourselves in check... Donnie Boivin: Yeah, absolutely. It's gonna be fun someday sharing the stage with you by the way Chalene Johnson: (laughs) Well thank you. Yeah, I hope you like to dance Donnie Boivin: Well you know I'm a traditional country white dude, so if you'd seen the movie Hitch - this is my move, that's all I got Chalene Johnson: Okay, perfect Donnie Boivin: And if my wife even saw me do that much, she would be laughing right now because she knows how bad of a dancer I am. So where is this journey taking you? You've got all kinds of cool things going on, you had a bad ass journey and I love the self discovery that has happened too much power in you sharing that real side of your story for some of the listeners that are going through the same... So where is this taking you? Donnie Boivin: For me it’s about helping people to be healthy and health is not just fitness and nutrition, it is taking a look at every part of your lifestyle and figuring out how you can improve it because then you improve that, you improve your confidence and it makes people around you happy and that's really what this 131 method, what this book is about. Helping people understand how you become an expert of yourself. You have to become aware, you have to become aware of what you’re running from, what you’re putting in your body, how it’s affecting you, looking long term at how do you live, how do you want to show up for your kids? What kind of energy do you want to have? Do you want to be held hostage by your job? By the food that you are no longer supposed to eat or somebody else's food rules? Do you want to be held hostage by a body or how you feel about your body/? Do you want to have optimal health? That is how we improve our confidence. When we improve our confidence we treat other people better, we take more risks, we bounce back quicker, we have a resilience and it just trickles down to other people in our lives and it's those relationships that make us healthy and make us happy. So me at the moment it's trying to deliver a kind of whole person approach to being healthy and happy. Donnie Boivin: I love it, I have two theories I I wanna run by you quick. The first one, I don't think anyone has a confidence issue. Bear with me one second, I think they have an experience issue. I think that a lot of times people are afraid to do X, whatever X is. It's like riding a bike for the first time you might fall and skin your knees but you get back on the bike and you ride. And once you are able to ride a bike, you have all the confidence in the world. So I think most times people are not lacking in confidence, they are lacking in experience of that thing they don't feel confident in. Chalene Johnson: Yeah, so if I'm hearing you correctly you're saying at the root cause - if you’re trying to fix your confidence, build evidence file of more experience so you know oh wow I survived it and I’m better for it so therefore I have more confidence in myself Donnie Boivin: Love that word; evidence file. That’s cool. I love that. The second one is not mine and I'll give the accolades to whoever said it, they said this phrase quit listening to yourself and start talking to yourself. It was an interesting context for me because I know my self-talk growing up wasn’t always positive, not always pushing in the right to regard, it was constantly I'm not good enough. People don't always verbalize that but through the years as I started changing the story and changing the dialogue. Like when I watch my business, kept saying that I'm not a good business owner, I don't know how to do all this. So that became a self-fulfilling prophecy on a regular basis, I wasn't good enough Chalene Johnson: Right! Donnie Boivin: But once I started saying I'm a business owner, I run a top of the world podcast you know, all of that… things started dramatically changing. So I love this new thought process of quit listening to yourself, start talking to yourself Chalene Johnson: Yeah, I mean you know mindset determines the outcome, If you believe something is going to fail, it will. If you believe you were meant to be overweight, uncomfortable, not attractive, you will. But if you also believe that it's possible, if you just give yourself permission to believe and see that it's possible then things start to change. Making those tiny shifts in our mindset and anybody can change their mindset, anyone can change their beliefs. The beautiful thing is you weren't born with these beliefs, you developed them. So you can develop new beliefs and improve your mindset Donnie Boivin: I love that and I love that you said mindset because I hate the phrase If you think it, you can become it and here’s why: I told this to a friend once upon a time, and he goes look my brother is 6’6 and his 400 lbs, he's never gonna be a jockey I don't care how many times he wants to be a jockey. So it's not how you can become anything you want to be, it’s you can change your mindset about anything you want to change your mindset about, which is huge. Chalene Johnson: Yeah, for sure Donnie Boivin: Well this has been an absolute blast, I have really enjoyed this. Chalene Johnson: Thank you! You too, I actually don't mind I appreciate it Donnie Boivin: So here's how I like to wrap up every episode - before we do that how does everybody find you? I know you got tons of fans all over the world but how does everybody find you real quick? Chalene Johnson: They can go to 131method.com or Instagram, it's probably where i’m the most active - i’m Chalene Johnson Donnie Boivin: Awesome, beautiful. So here's how I like to wrap up every episode, If you could leave the champions who listen to this show, with a quote; a phrase; a mantra; a saying something they can take with them on a journey, especially when they’re stacked up against it, going through… what would be that quote or phrase you would say, remember this? Chalene Johnson: Your track record thus far is 100%, so you gotta believe in yourself. You’ve survived everything else up ‘til this point; you’ll survive this too. Donnie Boivin: I love that, that's a first I haven't heard that one before. Well done Chalene Johnson: Well thanks! Donnie Boivin: So, darling thank you so much for coming on this show. What an absolute pleasure. Chalene Johnson: Absolutely, thank you so much Donnie the pleasure is mine, getting to know you and I appreciate the opportunity to get to talk to you, spend some time talking to you and get to know your people Donnie Boivin: Absolutely!

In today's episode, we help Wally grow his life and business strategy podcast. FULL TRANSCRIPT Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all. On today's podcast, we help Wally grow his life and business strategy podcast. Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Shane Sams: We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online, and now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started. Shane Sams: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again. Today, super excited to talk to another member of the Flip Your Life community and help them take their life and business to the next level. I'm really excited about today's guest because I was once featured on his podcast. It is the host of the Men of Abundance Podcast, Wally Carmichael. Wally, what is going on, my friend? Wally C.: Man, just living a beautiful life, living my best life, brother. So excited to be talking with you. Shane Sams: You are the most positive person in my Facebook newsfeed. I just wanted to tell you that. You make me happy, man. You're like a ray of sunshine beaming into my social media account every morning. Wally C.: I greatly appreciate that. That's the intent. Shane Sams: But you do make me jealous, though, because you refuse to live anywhere but a place with a beach, and you're just always showing those beach pictures. So I'm a little jealous sometimes. I'm jealous, but you know, we need a little envy to drive us forward sometimes. Jocelyn Sams: Hey, I'm looking out at a beautiful bluebird right now, so. Shane Sams: What'd you say, Jocelyn? Jocelyn Sams: I'm looking out at a beautiful bluebird right now, so it's not so bad. Shane Sams: Yeah, there's a bluebird flying around in January, so we're doing good up here in Kentucky too. Wally C.: Wonderful. Yeah, you guys got that beautiful lake up there too. That's just cool. Jocelyn Sams: Well, it's great to have you here today. We're really excited to talk with you. Let's give the audience a little bit of background information. Tell us a little bit about you and what you've been doing for, well, your life, and what you're doing online. Wally C.: Yeah, absolutely. So I grew up in a trailer behind another man's house. We didn't even have the money for a trailer park. Pretty rough lifestyle. I won't get into all of that, but that led to me just realizing I can't live like this my entire life. A lot of bad things, drugs, alcohol, fighting, all kind of stuff, and my uncle came home one year from leave. He was in the army, and I dropped out of college because I run out of money for school, for college. He said, "Join the military. You'll get some education along the way and travel the world." Basically, I said a few words. I said, "That's not happening. That's not my dream." Wally C.: I had no desire to do that. Well, after working two full-time jobs and realized it ain't working. It's just time to do, so I walked into the recruiter's office, signed up as a combat medic, and traveled the world. Did 25 years, retired about, goodness, time is passing so fast. About four years ago now, maybe, and retired in Hawaii. We had been there about ten years, and my entire life, even as a young man, I've always been entrepreneurial. I've always wanted, just like everybody else, I've been that man. I say I've been ungratefully chasing a six and seven figure income for the wrong reason. Wally C.: One day, I'm sitting on the gazebo right there from where you and I were texting that one point Shane. It's Saturday morning. My son's playing in the water, and he said, "Dad, dad, come and play." But I'm sitting there listening to another podcast to learn how to make more money and live this best life that I dream of, and when his face changed from excitement to disappointment, it just hit me like a brick. My wife's voice always telling me, "Wally, what the hell are you chasing?" It was just loud and clear like she was standing right there, but she was still back in the house asleep. Wally C.: I took the headphones off, I set them down, and from that point on, I just decided. Here I was, sitting on the beach in Hawaii in front of my house. Had a six figure income, not a huge six figure income, but living pretty darn comfortable, and I'm wanting more. I was just so ungrateful for what I already had, so I started this whole journey of, so much more. I just decided I'm living a life of abundance. I don't know that I said those words specifically, but it just hit me, and as soon as I started being more grateful for what I had and it was a process, so much more started coming into my life. So then I just had an idea to write a book, Living Your Life of Abundance, but I didn't want it to be about my life. I wanted to do other people's lives in there as well. Wally C.: So I started the Men of Abundance podcast, and then I started getting introduced to people like you who are just living an amazing life and somehow paying it forward to the community. They all got kick in the gut moments, and that's what I'm seeing that you talk about on the show, but in a nutshell, almost 50 years worth. There you have it. That's basically where we're at, kind of where we're at today. Shane Sams: Well, we all hit, we call that the catalyst, your kick in the gut moment, right? What we've realized in almost every person's story that we come in contact with in the Flip Your Life community is there is a catalyst moment that kind of wakes them up. I hate to get into, I'm not saying "woke" like the kids do these days, but it just kind of makes you open your eyes and be like, "What am I doing? What am I really here for?" Shane Sams: Being in the entrepreneurial world, we're surrounded by a lot of really successful people and there's a lot of people that are trying to do really cool, great things. I don't ever want to discount what anyone else is doing, but you can get lost in that ego-driven shuffle of, "Am I important enough? Am I reaching seven figures, eight figures, whatever," right? Then you don't realize, oh my gosh, but then I haven't seen my kids and I missed that recital and I didn't go to that ballgame. What am I doing? I didn't go jump in the water with my kid when he wanted to swim with me because I was too busy trying to make the next dollar. Shane Sams: That's really what we talk about when we say Flipped Lifestyle. Even in entrepreneurship, you gotta be careful not to fall into the world standards of what's successful. You gotta go build your own success, and you gotta build a life that makes your kids and your spouse and your family happy, and you got that balance where you're not trading one rat race for another. Jocelyn Sams: I love what you talked about about truly being thankful and grateful for what you have. I've been doing some reading lately, and that's a big theme in a lot of the books I've been reading is just making sure that you are doing that so that you can continue to grow. I think that maybe I've kind of let that get lost along the way the last few months and I'm trying to be intentional about being in a place of thankfulness more often. So that's really cool that you- Shane Sams: It can all, because you can lose it quickly, you know what I mean? You can just lose that gratefulness and that thankful, like being in the military. You've seen all these places. You remind me of Jocelyn's dad a little bit. He was in the military and he's been to all these countries, and you and him are probably the two people I know that have been to the most places, maybe. You know what I mean? And it's like, but you can lose sight of that, and it almost, when your life becomes routine even when you've got some success, you can become unhappy in the middle of all your success if you're not careful. Wally C.: Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I have conversations with guys all the time that are in that very situation, and we'll get into the whole business side of it, but that's how I started the business side of it. A couple of guys about eight months into my podcast started asking me, "Do you coach people in living a life of abundance?" And I was like, "No, that's not even where I planned on this going." But then a spouse contacted me and she's like, "Look, I've been listening to your show. I love the conversations you have. I love your lifestyle. I love your mindset. My husband, we make plenty of money. He makes plenty of money. He's just not here. He comes home every night, but he's just not here. He's disengaged. Will you coach him?" I'm like, oh man. He's gotta want that first, but that really got the ball rolling and my mind kind of spinning. Shane Sams: Well, let me back up for a second then. So you're entrepreneurial, but you had this career in the military. You retired, and you basically just started this podcast to have these conversations with people, and it sounds like the kind of, after you had that little catalyst moment where you saw your son's face get disappointed, it was almost more just to explore this in your own life, it sounds life. Wally C.: Exactly. Shane Sams: You started the podcast, you started talking to people, reaching out to people, and you've kind of fallen into this entrepreneurial stuff of wait a minute, this could be my second career. This could be my second income. My content has kind of moved me toward maybe having an accidental business on my hands. Wally C.: That's exactly what happened. I originally started the podcast to gather more stories for the book that I still haven't written, although I've written a book since then, but I haven't written that book. Now, as it stands at the time of this conversation, I'm 100% working from home, and I have been for a while. I've been teleworking, but now that's a done deal. So I'm focusing on that. Shane Sams: What's interesting is we were talking the other day on Facebook, because after, we've kind of developed a little online friendship since I talked on your podcast. I noticed that you have had some struggles with even turning this into a business, like charging people and is it good? Is it bad? I've seen you post some very interesting poll questions like that too, and I know that a lot of people kind of struggle with that, right? Because sometimes, you have a mission in life, and you're like, but do I charge people for my mission? Is that just going back to those old ways? What do you think about that in your journey right now? Wally C.: Yeah, that's exactly one of my biggest struggles is just that, and it's kind of evolved a little bit because of one of the coaches that I hired, quite frankly. He kind of made some sense in the whole process of, "What are you gonna charge for and should you charge?" I made the decision that quite frankly, I have to charge for much of it, but I still struggle with it. Shane Sams: Yeah, and one thing that we got over that originally was you almost owe it to people to charge people, because if they don't invest in themselves, they will not do things, right? Think about everything you get in life for free. You get a free sample or you get a little toy trinket from an arcade game or that your kids get and they throw it away in five seconds. You get the Happy Meal toy and it's lost in a week. Think about how kids interact with free things, right? Shane Sams: Almost everything like that goes away because there's no investment. People have no reminder. They have no ouch that says, man, I've got to take advantage of this so that I can do something with all this coaching or information or whatever I'm learning. I had a buddy, or Jocelyn had a friend the other day that was selling a course. What was that course about, Jocelyn? Was it about clothes or something? Jocelyn Sams: Yeah, so I bought a course from Kelly Snyder. She's actually a friend of mine, and she does a course that is called Adore Your Wardrobe. It is all about finding the type of clothing that looks the best on your body type. So I actually purchased this and it just started today, so I'm really excited about that. But yeah, I just bought that. Shane Sams: Kelly sent her a message though right after she bought it, and it was like, "Oh, I would've given that to you. Blah blah blah. You're my friend." But it's kind of like no, if she didn't pay for it, she's not gonna use the course, right? It would just be like, oh, someone gave me something for free. I'll check it out later. Jocelyn Sams: You just don't feel the urgency to actually do it. If she were to give it to me, then I'd be like, oh, well. I'll just put it off and do it later, but because I've made the investment, I'm like, okay. I need to get this done. I invested in this and I need to do the coursework. It's the same thing with us. Any time that we've ever given anyone our courses or our community, I don't know of anyone that's actually doing anything with it and actually made it work. Shane Sams: Yeah, it's never been good when we've given stuff away. It wasn't good for them, because they just didn't do it. Your story is really interesting, but I think there's something deeper underneath even that struggle, with that kind of fear. You started creating content, which is the first thing we almost tell everybody to do. Hey, look, we're gonna figure out your idea. We're gonna figure out your avatar. We're gonna figure out your product. We're gonna do those things, but why not just turn the YouTube camera on? Why not just turn the Facebook Live on? Why not start a Facebook page or a blog or something, just start throwing things out there, right? Shane Sams: You did that. You just like, ah, I'm gonna start a podcast. I'm gonna write a book. I don't know what it's gonna end up, and then these opportunities started showing up because you took action and you created things, right? Sometimes, it just takes that doing of the thing to kind of open doors for later to have a business, to have influence, to have impact on the world. Wally C.: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Once I started doing that, initially because I was gonna have guests on, it was like maybe the first month or two was a little bit of a struggle getting guests and contacting people, then after that, I turn people away. I'm literally booked out into April, almost May. Shane Sams: Isn't that funny how that works out? Wally C.: It's crazy. Shane Sams: When I first started my first podcast, it was a football coaching podcast called The Coach XO Show, and I didn't know how I was gonna start. I didn't know who I was gonna talk to. I was just this little football coach from Kentucky. So I actually reached out to a guy I went to high school with who coached seventh grade defense. He wasn't even the head coach on the middle school team. He was the seventh grade defensive coordinator. He's like fifth in command on the middle school team, right? And I was like, but I need somebody to talk to, and he knew a lot about the 6-2 defense, and we had jammed about it at church before. So I said, "Hey, man, do you wanna be on my podcast?" Shane Sams: So that was my first guest, right? Well, literally within eight weeks, I had talked, my guests went from the seventh grade middle school coach, right? To Hal Mumme, who is one of the legends of college football, one of the greatest offensive coordinators of all time. Then I talked to this guy down in Louisiana who had just went viral because his team never punted. He had just been featured on ESPN, right? I sent him a message and he talked to me on my podcast. Then I talked to this other guy who had been an NFL veteran for 12 years, and he was a weightlifting guy, Crossfit guy. Really famous Crossfit guy. Shane Sams: So within eight weeks, I went from the middle school coach to three really, really super high profile guests that I had no business talking to, but it was just because I took action. It was because I created something, and I kept creating something, and it's just unbelievable, the doors that open when you do the thing, not when you dream the thing, right? Wally C.: Yeah, absolutely. Shane Sams: And I love watching your journey. I kind of feel like I've seen your journey from the beginning, because we kind of crossed paths early when you started doing this, and I said to Jocelyn just the other day, but I think before you'd even scheduled this. "Man, Wally's starting to evolve. Look at this. Look what he's doing. Look at his podcast. Look what's happening here." Right? Like we could see that happening, then when you came into the community and we started talking, I was really excited to do this podcast. Shane Sams: So let's talk a little bit more about the business aspect. So what is Men of Abundance evolving into? So you've had these people wanting you to coach, but that's a real, broad, general term, right? You don't just coach everything. You coach something, right? So where do you see this evolving into a business, like into a coaching business? What exactly are you gonna talk to these men about? And you are gonna, it's men, right? That you're really focused on. Wally C.: Correct, yeah. That's right, yeah. I'm primarily focused on men, and I could niche down even more on specifically veterans because I'm big in the veteran community, of course. I'm part of a couple different organizations involving veterans, but the way it evolved is as I started the process and talking with the other coaches and figuring out how to coach living a life of abundance. As I started getting into it, I was realizing that yeah, a lot of guys want more in their life in family, faith, finances, and fitness, but they don't, one, most of them aren't willing to pay for it because they don't want it that much. They're not willing to put in any real work towards it. Wally C.: So one of the coaches I was talking with, he pointed out that, he said, "Well, who are the people that you talk to that you know that would pay for such a service?" Bottom line, we booked it down to business owners, entrepreneurs, because they're forward movers. They're constantly progressing in life, and they know the benefits of personal development. So I already had some business skills because I've had many different businesses throughout the course of my life, and I knew the basics, a little bit more than the basics of business and marketing than the average guy out there, like your average plumber, chiropractor, dentist, child psychologist, AC type business. They're great at what they do in business, but they really, they're not great at marketing. They're not great at business strategies. So that's where- Shane Sams: Or balancing life, maybe. Wally C.: Exactly, exactly that. All of that, so that's what I decided to do was that's why I called it the business side, abundance and prosperity mastery, because a lot of these guys don't want to get coached in living a life of abundance and the mindset stuff, but I've developed a way that I'm able to give them the strategies and show them the strategies they need to greatly increase the revenue and profits within their business. Oh, by the way, as I'm having conversations with them, I'm changing and I'm enhancing their mindset through the words, because I'm correcting the words that they're using, and I'm giving them a few soft skills that they don't realize I'm actually putting them on. They think it's more strategies, and you and I know all the entrepreneurs we get a chance to talk to, anything that you gonna succeed in life, business, it doesn't matter what it is. It's 80% mindset and 20% strategy. Wally C.: I just give that to them, and I'm seeing that they're having results in that, so now, I've been working with a couple guys kinda just trying them out, guys that I know that are gonna do what I ask them to, we're gonna work together. They're getting benefits. They're getting, their life is improving. They're spending more time with family, more quality time, because what happens with a lot of business owners is when they find that they're not making much money, they want to put more time and money into the business, taking away from their family, faith, and their own health. Shane Sams: So what does abundance mean to you? Because that's important because these definitions matter. Jocelyn and I struggled with this for years with Flipped Lifestyle, not just defining what the Flipped Lifestyle looked like to us, but really being able to tell people what we do, right? We always try to use the words "so that" in everything, at the end of every sentence in our sales copy because it's not enough to say, "We'll help you start an online business." We'll help you start an online business so that you won't have to work for anyone else and you can be your own boss, so that you can control your time and take your kids to school in the morning. So that you can not miss the dance recital and the thing, right? Shane Sams: When you throw out big words like abundance, that can mean a lot of things, right? And you're clearly, from what you've just told me, you're not just saying, "I know everything about business," right? It's more like, you're kind of just using business as the vehicle to insert these mindset shifts. So what is abundance to you and what you're trying to tell these guys? Wally C.: That's a great question. That's actually one of the last question I ask every single one of my guests, is what does abundance mean to them and for me, it means one, having enough resources in my life to live the way that I want to live and where I want to live, but also having enough to be able to pay it forward and contribute to others, whether it's time, treasures or talents. It's not always about money. It's about resources, and resources is not just money. Don't get me wrong. I'm all about making money because it's a tool, and it's a very powerful tool, but too many people just want to, I just had a conversation recently. A guy who said, "I want to be a billionaire." Well, why? Wally C.: When you break it down, it's all because they want what you and I have. Time freedom, live where you want to live, and do the things with your family that you want to do. It doesn't take a billion dollars to do that. Jocelyn Sams: Exactly, yeah. I think that's something that we've realized even in just the last couple years is that there is a limit to how much we want to scale. It's different for all people, but for us, we don't enjoy managing people, and because of that, we don't want a team of a bunch of people. It's just one of those things. You have to make that decision, what do you want to do? I think sometimes, Shane's like, "Well, we need to make $8 billion," and I'm like, well, why? Because I don't- Shane Sams: Well, I get caught up in that trap all the time. I've got to constantly, we have calibration in our house. That's something that a lot of people don't have, but when one of us is getting too far one way, we can pull each other back. I do get into that comparison is the thief of joy kind of situation sometimes because we see something else and we think that's the road to get to what we want, but it's not really the road to what we want when we really look at it. Shane Sams: Jocelyn and I wrote down goals, if you listened to our podcast a couple of weeks ago, the good, the bad, and the future is what we called last year. We really said no to a lot of things this year. We've taken some things off of our calendar, we've not pursued some opportunities we had after a conversation very similar to that. We don't need that much money. We don't need that person. We don't need that opportunity. We're happy with our kitchen table business. I dig it. I posted a picture right before we started. I'm sitting in a chair with my feet propped up on a stool. Jocelyn's in her robe and a blanket. Are you wearing your robe or is that a sweater? Jocelyn Sams: No, I'm wearing pajama pants. Shane Sams: She's wearing pajamas. Jocelyn Sams: And a sweatshirt. Shane Sams: And we're looking out a window at this crisp, cool lake. That's our kitchen table business. We don't need a studio. We don't need a producer. We don't need, I emailed you back and forth and told you we're gonna be a minute late today, right? I don't need an assistant doing that for me. That's not the life we want. Jocelyn Sams: If people want that, that's cool. I don't judge them for it, but it's all about figuring out what you want and how you want to run your business and run your life, and as long as what you're doing is in alignment with that, then theoretically, I would call that abundance for that individual. Shane Sams: Here's where people mess this up. You can attest to this, Wally. People mess this up because they figure out what they want, but then they'll take anybody into their business as a customer, and they don't just go find their 500-1000 people that want the same thing, right? If you define abundance that way and a guy comes in and he really does want to be the guy on the high rise and he wants to work 70 hours a week and he gets meaning from the Harley Davidson in his office or the Ferrari in his garage. That's cool. That's his choice, but that's not the abundance or the coaching that you're providing, right? So you gotta be really careful who you're letting into your world too, you know what I mean? Wally C.: Yeah, absolutely. I'm very selective about things that I say yes to, and I get asked to do quite a few things here recently. For instance this morning. I ride my bike to my son's school and I ride over to the little beach area that we have over here, and then I do my little priming stuff and prayers. I do my workout. I come home. If I feel like taking a nap, I take a 15, 20 minute nap as my wife get up. Shane Sams: That's a pretty good day, man. Wally C.: We're going on a dinner cruise, or we had a dinner cruise scheduled for this evening but it got canceled- Shane Sams: And again, it costs nothing to ride your bike. Wally C.: Exactly. Shane Sams: You know what I'm saying? Have you ever heard the story of the business man and the fisherman? You ever heard that story? Wally C.: Oh yeah, absolutely. I love that story. I love that story. Shane Sams: I love that story. So there's this fisherman and he's sitting on the dock, and man, he's just pulling fish in. This entrepreneur guy comes up and goes, "Man, you're a really good fisherman. You should start a business selling fish." He goes, "Why would I do that?" And he goes, "Well, what else are you doing?" The guy goes, "Well, you know, I come out. I fish. I go back home. I take a siesta, take a nap, and I get up and eat lunch and hang out with my wife. I may come back out and fish again in the evening and then I go and light a fire and sit and eat dinner, and I go to sleep and rest and relax." Shane Sams: He goes, "Oh, no, that's a waste of time, man. You need to hire some people and teach them how you fish and get them out there on your boat, and you need to get two or three boats and you need to grow this and get a fishing cannery set up over here. You can run that and do that. You could make millions of dollars. 30 or 40 years of that, you'll be able to retire a rich man." The fisherman looks at him and he goes, "What would I do then?" And he goes, "Well, you get up in the morning. You fish a little bit. You go home, take a nap, hang out with your wife, and do it all again the next day." Shane Sams: And the guy was so blind by the ambition that he didn't see the dude already had that life. Why would he work 30 years to get that life when he already had it, right? And we do all do that, man. Everybody does that. We always want the next big thing and we don't look around and realize, I've got the big thing right in front of me. I love that story. I don't even know if I told it right. Wally C.: I do too. No, I've heard it so many different ways, but the one thing, I told that story one time and somebody pushed back on me and said, "But that doesn't add to the part. My definition of abundance is being able to give to other people, because by that definition, this guy's not giving to other people." I'm like, "Well, is he or isn't he?" Shane Sams: He's giving to his wife. He's given- Wally C.: Exactly. He's probably given to his faith, and other people see his lifestyle. Just by that definition, just by that example, he is giving a lot. Shane Sams: I find that, that's an excuse that people use a lot. Wally C.: Oh, absolutely. Shane Sams: That's an excuse, because the people that say that usually don't give anyway. You know what I mean? We had a good piece of advice given to us one time that said, "You can't help everybody. It's not physically possible and we're only here for a blink of an eye when you look at the whole time of the universe, right? But you should help people. You wish you could help everybody, and if you just did that as many times as you could over your lifetime, think how much better the world would be, because if everybody did that two or three times in their life, then we would all be paying it forward." That's really what everybody's trying to do their business. Shane Sams: We go back to the million dollar thing. I get caught up with money sometimes too. Everybody does, but the big goal that we have for everybody is get to 100 people paying you $50. That's $60,000 a year. I promise you, in most places in the United States, $60-100,000 can give you a really peaceful, calm, good life with a lot of time control, without want, staying warm, dry, and fed, being there for your kids. You don't need millions of dollars to make it, to make the life that you want possible. Shane Sams: Everybody gets caught up with that. We get caught up with it, and you just can't do that if you're gonna make it online. Jocelyn Sams: Well, let's talk a little bit about, okay, so right now, you have your podcast. You are bringing people onto coach them, and I know that you said that your schedule is pretty full, right? Wally C.: Well, actually, the schedule's primarily just for the podcast. I do interviews on Tuesdays and Thursdays and quite frankly, my podcast has been down. There's an itunes issue for the last three weeks, but just on my podcast only. There's several hundred thousand podcasts that are out there, but we got it figured out. But right now is where I'm actually taking on, I'm starting to take on one on one clients, and now I'm kind of considering the whole, I want the member's site for a specific reason. Shane Sams: So what is your question today then? Okay, you're doing the right thing getting a few one on one clients to really have those relationships and learn, but you're wanting to scale your influence with a membership site? Is that what I'm hearing? Wally C.: Right. Right. Well, what I'm finding is with men specifically is one on one coaching's great, but when we get a group of men together in a tribe, so to speak, is one of the common terms these days. But when we get common minds together and we start collaborating, then people will just feed off of each other, and we want to be the best, especially a bunch of usually alpha guys are trying to help each other out and hold each other accountable. So that's kind of where I'm at and what I'm wanting to do because there's groups out there that are doing things like this that are trying to prove, or the leader will go on rants about why this and that about masculinity and how it's under attack, all stuff. Wally C.: That's not what I'm subscribing to. What I'm subscribing to is just taking those men who feel they're doing all the right things in life and in business. They're just not pushing through the, they're just not getting ahead. They just feel that they're not ... They feel they're doing the right thing in life, they're just not taking it to the next level. Shane Sams: They're alone. They feel alone, right? Wally C.: That too. They feel alone. So many guys feel they have to do this stuff alone, and I want to create a community, an abundance and prosperity mastery tribe, if you will, in a group and have all of us feed off of each other and share these amazing strategies that I have access to that will just propel most any brick and mortar style business. Shane Sams: Yeah, I love the commercials of the guy that throws the rich guys onto the beach, like navy SEALS, and he just beats them up for like three days. He's like, "Yeah, now we're men and we're accountable." I've seen a lot of that stuff. Wally C.: I know exactly who you're talking about. Shane Sams: I'm not gonna say names. Wally C.: I'm not either. Shane Sams: But I'm just saying, I'm not scared to say things certainly. Wally C.: And on top of that, never been military. Shane Sams: Yeah, right, and it's just- Wally C.: I know what you're saying. Shane Sams: I saw one thing this guy was talking about, how he wanted to quit smoking, so the dude shoved Vaseline up his nose and kicked sand in his face and was like, 'That's what it's gonna feel like when you're 70." I'm like, someone paid 10 grand for someone to kick sand in their face. Anyway, all right, so- Wally C.: I got paid to do that, so I'm just saying. Shane Sams: Right? Wally C.: Not to be the instructor to be the different kind of abuse. Shane Sams: Yeah, whatever. You don't have to do that to get abundant, guys, if you're listening to this. Anyway, so what you're saying, it's almost what you're making it sound like is you want to create a very similar dynamic to a small group, or like guys that meet at the coffee shop. They talk about their life and they realize they're not alone and they share strategies for life. Your business sounds like it's going to be a facilitator to this accountability group, right? You're the conduit. People go through you but they get everybody else, right? Wally C.: Correct, correct. On top of that, they get access to all of the business strategies that I have. One of the questions that I have in reference to the platform is I have a platform that's an eLearning platform that has literally, just millions and millions of dollars are done for you, templates and strategies and videos and workbooks, and it's all, you go in and you answer a few questions about your business, and then you get a road map on where to start with all of this information. Wally C.: Then you follow that roadmap and then I facilitate that depending on what level of package that you get started with me. Either you do it yourself or you're gonna partially work with me or you're gonna be complete one on one. But- Shane Sams: So right now, your thought is one on one, you can see that one on one won't scale and you just need to scale it. Wally C.: Correct. Because I can only, honestly, I'm capped out. When I do cap out, I will, five one on one at $2,000 a month, and it doesn't matter if it was $5,000 a month. I don't want to do more than that because I enjoy my lifestyle. I like driving to Disney during the middle of the week and hang out with the family or something. Shane Sams: Oh, without question. Yeah, we do the same thing with one on one stuff. There's only so many- Jocelyn Sams: There are some people who are always gonna be willing to pay that premium price to get one on one attention, and that's totally fine. But then there are a lot of other people who want to DIY or maybe they want less interaction with you, but they want some interaction with you. That's exactly the way we set up our community. Shane Sams: Yeah, so let me ask you this. So your struggle is how do I build, what do I make this thing look like, is that correct? Like how do I move from the one on one to the group stuff? Is that what your biggest struggle? Wally C.: Right. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Shane Sams: Yeah. Sometimes it works backwards. You build the smaller tier first, and then you work up and find the people that are willing to pay the premium, and then you balance that against your time. But you're kind of doing it a little backwards. You've got these one on one people and it's working, but you're like, okay, but my impact has capped at five people or whatever. So you gotta move it into the thing. I would suggest probably not going all the way to a digital community yet. There's probably gonna have to be another shift in the middle there where you set some kind of lower tier at like 50 people where you are interacting with them, but it's in a more one to many setting, right? Right now, do your one on one clients have any interaction with each other? Wally C.: No. Shane Sams: Okay. Probably what I would suggest that you do is ask those guys that you're already coaching. "Hey guys, I'm gonna add something to what you're already getting. I'm not changing it. I'm not taking anything away, but I'm gonna add a one hour monthly call with all my clients. You don't have to participate, but I'm gonna go ahead and do this. I'm gonna go ahead and add this on." Maybe two of them do it, three of them do it. Maybe two of them are like, "Nah, man. I'm really cool with this one on one stuff. I don't want to talk to anybody but you, Wally." That's cool. That's fine, right? Some people value the privacy over the impact, you know what I mean? Shane Sams: So that's what I want you to do. First of all, say, "I'm gonna add this," and maybe three of them show up, right? And it's you and three other guys, literally like a Mastermind, okay? You just make it really casual, like introducing each other. "Hey, guys. We're here. What's the biggest win we had last week?" Maybe the next time you do it, it's like, "What's the biggest struggle you had last week?" We all just share it. Tell them, hey, look, you can say a business struggle or something simple. You don't gotta say, you know, you were having an argument with your spouse. It doesn't have to be personal. It's just, what's something you're struggling with, right? Make it real easy and see, and you need to get a feel for that group interaction, okay. Shane Sams: Then what you do is you start turning these into a bimonthly thing. Every two weeks, they get together. Every two weeks, they get together. What happens next is, you add a tier that's more like, "Hey guys on the podcast. Listen, I know one on one coach is not great for you guys, everybody, but I do have a little meetup that we do every week, right? This is x dollars a month. You get to come to the meetup," and maybe you expand that to 20 people. "I only have 20 spots. Here's a nice little group thing." And you start doing these meetups, like you do them in cohorts, like ten of them meet on one week, ten of them meet on the other. That'll give you about three to six months of feeling what it's like to manage a group, and also create these, a better revenue stream where it is more, not passive, but it's spread out more. You see what I'm saying? Shane Sams: Because if you go straight into the group dynamic of a huge membership community with all these digital resources, it's so different than what you're doing now, it's gonna be hard. You're gonna be managing two businesses. You need to move that way first, because then you can take all those people and say, "Hey guys. I'm gonna add another thing for you guys." You're adding to the people you've got now, not taking away or moving away from them, right? Then you can add it into more of a group dynamic, like a Facebook group or a forum or whatever, and then it's just off to the races at that point, right? Shane Sams: So you could tell this next cohort, "Hey, we meet twice a month. I'm gonna do a little training, take two or three questions." It's kind of like our group calls, like our members call that we do, but you're kind of moving opposite direction from us. You're going from one on one to doing some group calls with maybe 10-20 people to then opening more of a bigger membership type thing, right? Shane Sams: It's just, I've seen a lot of people fail going straight from one on one coaching to a membership community, and I don't want you to do that without kind of learning how to manage it. Does that make sense? Wally C.: Makes perfect sense. That's exactly why I wanted to have this conversation, because I know you guys have the experience in this area. Jocelyn Sams: Okay, so as you're thinking about starting to go into that method or that mode of business, what other questions do you have about that? Wally C.: Well, at this point, really just kind of what type of platform would I use, because the unfortunate part about the eLearning platform that I have is there's no chat capability in there, no way for members to communicate or even for me to communicate with the members. So I do have access to another members platform that I would be able to set up similar to what you have already within the Flipped Lifestyle, but is there a specific platform or anything specific that you would recommend that I use as I start transitioning into that? Or would I just use Zoom calls or something like that? Shane Sams: Yeah, keep it simple. If you'll notice, on our group calls, we use YouTube Live. We just embed it in the forum, right? And the reason we do that is because we know it's simple. When we do Flip Your Life Live, three months before the event, we have three, what we call icebreaker sessions where we bring attendees onto a Zoom call, and there's literally 50 people on the call, right? We go through each person for like two minutes each, you know what I'm saying? Over like a couple hours, and we're all just having a good time and we ask them icebreaker questions. Shane Sams: We just do it on Zoom. We don't do it on some big fancy membership platform or anything we've got to invest in. It's just, let's just use a Zoom, Zoom's the easiest. YouTube Live's the easiest. Don't make it overcomplicated because then you'll just confuse your user. Everybody knows about YouTube Live, right? Everybody knows about YouTube, so if you're like, "Hey guys. I'm doing a YouTube Live. There's a chat box. Go to this link. I'll see you there." Or Zoom, same thing. Go to a link and I'll see you there. Jocelyn Sams: Ultimately, do what makes sense to you, what you like to use and- Shane Sams: Or you know how to use. Jocelyn Sams: Yeah, exactly. Just keep it simple. I think people put too much stock in this. Oh, I don't know which is better, Zoom or Facebook Live or whatever and they sit there in this basically vortex of indecision for six months, and they don't get anything done. Shane Sams: That's a great quote. Jocelyn Sams: Yeah. Shane Sams: A vortex of indecision. Dun dun. Jocelyn Sams: It's really true, because you want to make sure you're doing the quote, "right thing." Well, there is no right thing. Just make a decision and move on it. Shane Sams: We just spent about three weeks. I looked down at our business last year, and I said to Jocelyn in the car one day. It was like, "Man, look at all the third party apps and things that we're paying monthly for that have wormed their tentacles into our business and are hanging on for dear life, right?" And it kind of reminded me of barnacles on a ship. You gotta get all the stuff that grows on the ship off of it. Shane Sams: It took me like two or three weeks, and I just went straight back to nothing but WordPress and Infusionsoft and now that I'm looking at it, I'm like, why did I allow that to happen? It was the same mentality of, oh, that's a fun tool. That makes my life easier. They said so right on their sales page, right? Wally C.: And the next guru is using it. Shane Sams: Yeah, right, exactly. The main thing is just do the easiest thing that works and gets the job done. We're talking on $60 Amazon microphones and they're plugged into a $100 mixer, and somebody told me once that that if we didn't get a Heil microphone that was $600, no one would ever be able to listen to our podcast. The audio would be garbage, and I'm like, bro. This Audio-Technica's 60 bucks. I'm going with it. Shane Sams: It was hilarious, one time we did, I can't remember who it was. Someone was like, I can't remember if it was Mixergy. I don't remember what it was. They said, "Man, your audio. You have the best audio that any I've heard in months on my podcast." And this person interviews big people, right? And we were like Audio-Technica 2100s baby. Had them since 2014, going strong. Jocelyn Sams: We did have to replace one. Shane Sams: Yeah, one of them broke, but we got another one. Wally C.: When you and I had our conversation, Shane, I was overlooking the ocean sitting in the cabin of my Toyota Tacoma with a $50 microphone plugged into my Macbook. Shane Sams: Hey, there are great acoustics inside of a car, I'm telling you. If you're having trouble, if you don't have a microphone out there and you just want to record with your laptop, just go out in the garage. I did that all the time for our first courses, because the kids would be going crazy and it was a detached garage. I would go out in the garage, get in the car and shut the door to record, because I didn't have a good microphone then. It sounded fine. Everything worked good. Jocelyn Sams: All right, let's jump into our action step. We want to know based on what we talked about here today, what is something that you are planning to take action on? Wally C.: Well, I'm gonna start getting with the, doing exactly what Shane said. I ask questions because I want the answers and I'm gonna take action on the suggestions, so it's exactly that. I'm just gonna get with these guys and find out who would like to participate in just a monthly call, see how that works out, and then start transitioning that just exactly the way Shane said to do it. Just follow the steps. Shane Sams: Do the first two with just your one on one guys even if only two of them want to do it, okay? Be like, "Hey, I'm adding something to what I'm giving you. It's included in your cost. I'm gonna start doing a meetup of my coaching clients. You don't have to come if you don't want to." My guess is they all will, right? Because they probably are craving something like that in their life with just a group of guys on a call. Then roll it out on your podcast with a nice, simple price tag. We can talk about that in the forums what the price will be, and see if maybe 10 other guys want to join this call. See if you can turn it into something. Then three months, six months down the road, we start saying, okay, how can I add 500 men to this and change their lives too? Wally C.: Yeah, I like that, and one other thing I'm gonna do is based off of the members call that you had the other day is I've sent in the request I guess to start doing YouTube Live, because I've done many YouTube videos. I just post them or they automatically post from my Facebook Live onto YouTube, but I'm just finding my clients or anybody that wants to work with me in this arena are not on Facebook. My wife quite frankly pointed that out. She said, "What are you doing? You're gonna get no response off of that." But I know they're on YouTube. I know guys are going on YouTube looking for business strategies and stuff. Shane Sams: I think 72% of people that use YouTube are men or something like that. It's some kind of weird, it's really skewed, the audience on YouTube toward men. Wally C.: Yeah, that's pretty much right. I was just with Chris Krimitsos. Being here in Florida, he runs the Podfest, and we have a members, a meetup group out here. He's been talking a lot about YouTube and having experts come on of the YouTube. So that's the other thing. Once you guys were talking about- Shane Sams: You can search easier, too. It's a lot easier- Wally C.: Yeah, absolutely. Shane Sams: To search out your information. Wally C.: Yeah, right. Jocelyn Sams: All right, well it has been awesome having you here today. I see here on this list of questions that we had sent to you that you do have a bible verse that you would like to share, so we would love for you to read that for us. Wally C.: Absolutely. So this is Jeremiah 29:11, and quite frankly I got this because my son bought me a journal and this is the verse that's right on front of the journal. "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future." Shane Sams: Love that bible verse man. Well, listen Wally, thank you so much for sharing with everything today. My son's playing in the water, and he said, "Dad, dad, come and play." But I'm sitting there listening to another podcast to learn how to make more money and live this best life that I dream of, and when his face changed from excitement to disappointment,

While in grade school, Wally Carmichael realized he was an entrepreneur. Even while he was in the military, he still found ways to put his entrepreneurial tendencies to work. After Wally realized he was, in fact, living his dream, he decided to work on a book which led him on a journey of abundance. Wally recently spoke Gabe on Today’s Business Leaders. Finding a Better Way Wally grew up near Phoenix, and while he had wonderful parents, life was always a bit of a struggle. His uncle suggested that he join the military, and it took some time for Wally to come around to this idea, but it ended up completely changing the course of his life. The military gave Wally structure, leadership and mentorship. These are all skills Wally continues to use to this day. After 25 years in the military, Wally left and officially started his career as an entrepreneur. As Wally explains, “It’s been a crazy, crazy life. It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve learned a lot. I messed up a lot. I failed a lot, and I think that’s why I’m where I’m at today.” Realizing the Dream Wally was always working and chasing down new ideas and looking for ways to increase his bottom line. One day he realized that he already had everything he wanted. He was living his dream. At this point, he decided to be grateful and appreciate his current situation, and once he came to that conclusion more came into his life in terms of relationships and opportunities. Life of Abundance One thing led to another, and Wally found himself hosting a podcast in which he talks to amazing people from all walks of life, from multi-millionaires to people paying things forward and more really intriguing people leading fascinating journeys. Wally is using the stories he collects to write a book. Wally also has a coaching business and helps entrepreneurs navigate their way. Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation
Wally Carmichael is a former Army Medic who, after 25 years of service, directed his passion for coaching and mentoring into building the Men Of Abundance Podcast and Pay It Forward Community. After traveling the world and talking with hundreds of men from all walks of life and various levels of success, significance and greatness, he realized many men (and women) were not living the life of abundance they truly desired. Most appeared to "have it all”, however, they were not fully fulfilled in all aspects of their family, faith, fitness and finances. Through hosting the Men of Abundance Podcast, sharing his lifestyle via vlog, and building his online community, Wally now guides men in developing an abundance mindset and living a life of abundance. In today's conversation with Wally, we explore the secret to living a life of abundance, as he shares with us how he transformed his life from humble beginnings to being happily married, living in Hawaii, and doing the work that he loves. As a veteran, we also explore the lessons he learned in the service and how he has translated them into civilian life. In his view, many veterans underestimate themselves and undersell themselves, not recognizing the value of their leadership, organization skills and ability to bring teams together for a common cause. To wind up our conversation, Wally shares his secondary passion, which is teaching business owners and entrepreneurs how to effectively market themselves and their value proposition. He invites our listeners to connect with him and share their case study in order to enlighten others on how to generate more quality leads and convert them to clients. Key Takeaways The best education to give yourself and your kids is to travel. Always improve your foxhole. You have more abundance already in your life than you can imagine. Be grateful for the abundance that you have every day. It comes down to our language – be more intentional about how you talk to yourself. Have a (miracle) morning routine, and prepare yourself the night prior. Be intentional with your relationships – don't be haphazard with your date nights. Take control of this and be intentional. Date your children – one at a time. Whatever they want to do, not what you want to do. Welcome to Episode 83 of the No Quit Living Podcast. NQL is a personal development podcast designed to help listeners achieve their goals and desires. Through hearing the inspiring stories and tips from the greats, we will all find it easier to stay motivated. Wally's one word he'd use to describe himself is "abundant." With his business being called "Men Of Abundance," that umbrella's a successful podcast and a very exclusive Facebook group, "abundance" is definitely something Wally knows a thing or two. In today's episode he defines success as having all the basics of living the life you want covered, and anything and everything beyond that is abundance. Abundance is not something we acquire, it's something that we tune into. Wally talks about the importance of paying it forward and to not share your knowledge and wisdom isn't doing anybody any favors. He speaks about the importance of chasing your dreams and that it's never too late to start. Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Today Men of Abundance (http://menofabundance.com) podcaster Wally Carmichael and his son Dalton talk to me as I continue to ask ‘What do children think about their schooling? We get some great insights from Dalton about selling old toys to create income and Wally talks about his own experiences and those of his older sons. We discuss practical learning as well as traditional academia and how this can help learning skills for trade jobs and not just degrees. The different ways that we all learn and how the personalised approach is supportive for everyone not just those who seem to be struggling. How education can still be linked back to the ideals of the industrial revolution and what is needed to help children prepare for the workforce of the future . I am using the 10 questions below in each episode to try and find any themes that may keep recurring. 1. If you could design your own classroom what would it look like? Eg Large open plan loft style, small rooms, sit in rows or groups? Anything goes be creative! 2. How would you create your day and spend your time? Eg How much time inside/outside, how much studying, exercise, time on your own/with others, playing, games, projects. Anything goes be creative! 3. How do you assess your progress? What do you do everyday to move forward towards your goals and dreams? 4. How often do you discuss and think about – what you eat, exercise, breathing, sleeping, mindfulness, gratitude, volunteering? 5. How often do you discuss and think about life? Babies being born or people dying. 6. How often do you discuss money, budgets, savings, financial planning? 7. Do you work with a mentor? Do you know what a mentor is? 8. How often do you lead a team of people? 9. Do you like working on real projects that are relevant to you? Eg Fundraising, events for the local community, school productions, concerts, sports events? 10. Of the things you enjoy most – do they happen in school time or are they after school clubs? What Is Required To Be A Leader? Welcome to the beginning of another glorious week in your life as a man. I think every man should be having a glorious life. If you are not currently having a glorious life, the bad news is that it’s probably your fault. The good news, is that every day is a brand new day, and you can be the creator of your own destiny. As men we have the power to create, imagine, dream and innovate. We can sculpt the world around us into what we desire through the strength of our own will. That’s the kind of stuff we talk about here. I am your host, and my name is Alf Herigstad. I have a friend that I met through the medium of podcasting named Wally Carmichael. He lives in Hawaii and he is the host of his own podcast called “Men Of Abundance”. Wally and I are very aligned on issues that pertain to men, and I encourage you all to check out his show, there will be a link to it in the show notes as well. The reason I’m bringing Wally and his show up is because I read something on his Facebook wall and I knew instantly that I was going to steal it and talk about it. I let him know, but I want to be sure and give credit where credit is due. In this post Wally was talking about the essence of leadership. It was beautifully and accurately worded and I’m going to share it with you then talk about it for a little bit. Wally wrote: “Men, if you have to tell someone you’re a leader, chances are, you’re not. Those who chose to follow you make you a leader. You’re position does not determine if you’re a leader. Your age or seniority does not determine if you’re a leader. Your skills determine if you’re a leader. Not even being a dad and a husband make you a leader. When others choose to follow you, then you’re leader. That is not a free ticket to start managing other people’s life.
Aloha Men, today is Pay it Forward Aloha Friday. This week I have a breakthrough thanks to a fellow podcaster and coach of men, https://menofabundance.com/078/ (Ryan Michler). In this episode I tell the story of my journey to become a Special Forces Medic (18D). I share with you the pain I endured and the hard decisions I had to make. https://menofabundance.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Back-from-the-Darkness.jpg ()My breakthrough came to me thanks to Ryan and a conversation he had with Navy Seal Joost Janssen on http://www.orderofman.com/back-from-darkness-navy-seal-joost-janssen/ (episode 119 of Order of Man podcast). In this conversation, Ryan and Joost start talking about quitting and Joost gave his perspective on quitting. He started out talking about why most men quit before they become a Navy Seal and the difference in those who do make it. But then Joost starts talking about quitting when it gets hard as apposed to quitting when it's just the smart thing to do. Thank you for allowing me to share this tough part of my life with you. I'm sure it will resinate with a few of you. Feel free to Share this episode with others who you fell will benefit from my experience. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. The Project EGG Show: Entrepreneurs Gathering for Growth | Conversations That Change The World
In this episode of the Project EGG show, we are going to hear from Wally Carmichael. Wally hosts the Men of Abundance podcast, a show for men who strive to be abundant in everything they do in life. Wally Carmichael interviews men, women and couples who are truly living their life of abundance and have a powerful message to share with you. Wally grew up in a rough neighborhood. He was surrounded by gangs, drugs, and violence. His childhood has had a huge impact on him even today. Wally recognizes that he is not afraid to face his fears and that has served him well as an entrepreneur. He also says that wanting to get out of this situation is what brought him to the Army. Through the Army he was able to get the education that he wanted. He didn't know it going in, but he would also learn tremendous lessons about leadership as well as service. His time in the Army was influential because of the mentors that he had. He grew in leadership and was given opportunities to lead other soldiers. He learned that the military often fulfills peacetime missions like digging wells and providing clean water in places where they otherwise would not have access. This service mentality has stuck with him through his life. He spend 25 years serving his country in the Army. Since retiring from active duty, he has realized how abundant his life really is. He attributes this to being grateful for what he has. He has a great life, but it is abundant because of his attitude. He shares his message of living an abundant life on his podcast, Men of Abundance. He talks with others about what it means to live an abundant life and how they can help others discover theirs. By focusing on acts of service and helping others, we can all achieve our dreams through whichever vehicle we decide to pursue them through. It's easy for me to tell you to do what you say you're going to do. I get it, I don't know your situation. I do know of your situation from personal experience and hundreds of conversations with other men. You know the feeling you get when you complete a task you've been needing to do for day, weeks or even years in some cases. That feeling of dopamine is amazing. Wouldn't you rather feel that more often than the feeling of a pending task hanging over you? By doing what you say you're going to do everyone around you is happier because you're happier. When you fulfill obligations to your wife, kids, boss and even yourself, you feel accomplished and fulfilled. Action steps: Set a date and time to the task, and stick to it. Start with small parts first. I call these little wins. And they add up. Get some accountability outside your family. Your wife holds you accountable often. But it's nagging to you. So tell someone you know and trust to hold you accountable. Get your family involved. Some tasks can be learning experiences for your kids. And working together is bonding. Get into our private https://menofabundance.com/members/ (Men of Abundance FB Group). We will give you more ideas and hold you accountable. Wally Carmichael is a husband, father, retired Army Medic, Department of the Army Operations Specialist and Podcast Host of the Men of Abundance Podcast. He was born and raised in Phoenix Arizona and joined the Army at the age of 20 for the education benefits, opportunity to travel and to escape what was clearly a destructive lifestyle. Wally is grateful to have traveled to 23 countries on five continents. He and his family have lived in Panama, Germany, Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, and currently lives in Hawaii. Next to family, his greatest passion is hosting his Men of Abundance Podcast, The Pay it Forward Community, where he has conversations with other Abundant leaders as well as up and coming entrepreneurs, authors, and thought leaders doing amazing things in their community. In my interview with Wally, he really focuses on how lucky we really are. Sometimes, we just have to stop and take a look around and realize how abundant our life is. When you switch your mindset from scarcity to abundance and focusing on serving others, amazing shifts begin to take place!
One of the experiences of life that I can say I will never have, is that of saying I was or am, a military man. I say that because of my age. I'm too old at least for the military in the United States. Some may see that as a good thing, others may not. I think it would have been a great experience in so many ways. I could have said I served my country. So, I know that I cannot speak as an insider who have been in the military and what the transition to civilian life especially to become an Entrepreneur, is like. That is why our guest - Wally Carmichael - a military man is best suited to share this process with you and I. [Read more]

First…The young Ram in the picture is of no real relevance to the episode. My usual picture generator was down, and I had this picture of the Ram, whose name is Gorge because he eats a lot, and I decided to use it. I will start off today by congratulating and acknowledging the winner of the Epic Kilt contest. In case you missed it, the sponsor of our Friday episodes; Stump Town Kilts, was kind enough to put one of their awesome kilts up as a prize for a contest. We had the contest, and the winner was…Terri Roe. That’s Teri with an I, yep…she’s a woman. There were no gender restrictions on the contest and she wasn’t the only woman who entered. And now, Terri is going to be the proud owner of her very own Stump Town Kilt. There is a video I made of the drawing on the Facebook page, so head over there and take a look at it. There is a link to the Facebook page in the show notes as well. If you are not that familiar with kilts you may not even know that women wear them…but they do. They are subtly different than a man’s kilt though. If you go to their website at stumptownkilts.com, you can see the difference for yourself. While you are there, you may as well do some browsing on your own behalf. I’m telling you, these are the best kilts you can get in my opinion. They are designed with the person wearing them in mind. One of my favorite features is the huge hidden pocket right in the front, it holds a ton of stuff and it is not even recognizable as a pocket. I like these kilts so much that I own three of them. If you ever thought of getting a kilt, stop putting it off, now is the time. And, as a listener of this program you get a discount. Just go to stumptownkilts.com, pick out your new kilt, and then when you are checking out enter the code; betterman, all lower case, all one word, and you will receive 10% off your purchase. ____________________________________ I saw an interesting post today on the Facebook page of a friend of mine named Wally Carmichael, and fellow man-centric podcaster, in fact I was a guest on his show...

Thanks so much to http://www.eofire.com/ (John Lee Dumas) and the Podcasters Paradise team and members. JLD, I truly appreciate the shout out and your wealth of knowledge. Now, on with the show. Aloha Men of Abundance I'm Wally Carmichael, your host for the Men of Abundance Podcast. The Podcast for men who strive to live a true life of Abundance in Family, Faith, Finances and Fitness with integrity and honor. I want to welcome you to the introduction episode of the Men of Abundance Podcast where we will hang out with inspiring men of abundance 4 days a week. I know you want to be the best man you can be. I know you want to spend more time with your wife and kids. I know you want to be great at your job. And I know some of you want to be entrepreneurs or at least build a strong plan B. Which I highly recommend. After talking to thousands of men around the world, I'm convinced every man has what it takes to be greater tomorrow than you are today. I also know, the most fulfilled men I know are men of abundance. So, what is living a life of Abundance? Only you can answer that for yourself, because living a life of true abundance is something different for everyone. I will say, as far as I'm concerned, it's not about money, but it can include money. It's not just about your faith and religion but that too can contribute. Living a life of abundance is more about living your life the way you see fit for yourself and your family, while being Abundant with your time, talents and treasures. The vision of Men of Abundance is to bring like minded men together for the purpose to build on each other's personal skills, business skills and values. Throughout each show I will introduce you to industry leaders in productivity, health, entrepreneurship, relationships, and communication just for starters. So why a community for Men of Abundance? There are already many groups for women and children at various stages of their life. And rightfully so. There are also groups from men who have been abused or are abusive, men who are recovering from addiction (porn, drugs, alcohol), men who are sex offenders, convicts and so on. I realize you may fall into at least one of those categories. If you do, I invite you to stick with me. Because I believe you will get something out of this experience. And I know, you will be value added to our community of men. But the question I asked myself was, why is there not a group for men who are doing all the right things, according to our society, yet still not getting to that sweet spot in life? Why is there not a community for the average dude who wants to hang out and learn from others living massively abundant lifestyles? A community of men who are building each other up? I know there are many religious based communities and there are communities with secret handshakes and fraternities. And that's great too. But I'm talking about a community of men without the special hats, coats and handshakes. Where's the group for men who can share with you the skills and the mindset required to level up your life in family, faith, fitness and finances? [spp-tweet tweet="Look, I'm complete, I'm just not finished."] I have everything I need in life, yet I don't have everything I... Support this podcast
