Inner Journey with Greg Friedman welcomes Emily Thiroux Threatt.. From a young teen experienceing death and dying as an ambulance attendant through countless experiences that could've inspired others to surrender Emily made a choice to live and share her life lessons as the author of “Loving and Living with Grief" as well as “The Grief and Happiness handbook”
This Episode of Empowering Chats is about grief. And this month's theme is “Eternal.” I intentionally placed this interview under this theme. I believe that all of us have an eternal essence, an eternal soul and an eternal energy that stays in the hearts of those we come in contact with even when we have left our physical bodies. My guest, Emily Thiroux Threatt is here to talk about grief and how to find our happiness within the folds of losing someone close to us. Her latest book is called, The Grief and Happiness Handbook, which is also a guidebook. This handbook has exercises to help guide you out of your grief. Emily lost 2 wonderful husbands who ironically both died of the same thing. After losing her first husband who was sick for 2 years, she never thought she'd marry again but then she met Ron, her second husband. He was a new thought minister and together they practiced living in the moment. And after his diagnosis she thought that practice of living in the moment was going to make all the difference in the world. And in some ways, it did help her, when he transitioned, but in other ways not so much. For a time, she found herself quite lost with no motivation to do much of anything but watch TV. Then she began to journal and found that writing grounded her. The more she wrote the more she found it grounding. What she realized is that when one is grieving, they often get stuck and are not sure where to go. Everything looks and feels different. She found that she needed guidance on where to go next. And this experience of writing, creating grief cards and slowly re-emerging into daily life is how she began to heal. She took what she learned and began to work with others in her community who were navigating grief and encouraged people to come up with intentions that would serve them directly. Sometimes they are simple intentions like “today I am going to eat healthy.” Emily says as divine beings we can embrace both grief and happiness as they do not have to directly oppose each other. The one thing people who are grieving should know is to take care of themselves and remember to ask for help. This is especially important in the early stages of grief. Watch and observe what you are doing. Be with people, go outside and allow yourself to be happy and around people you love. Do not hide. Emily also founded the non-profit, The Grief and Happiness Alliance where she offers weekly classes and meetings. She lives in Maui, Hawaii and also has a link where you can offer donations to the victims of the Maui fire so that her handbook can be available for anyone directly affected by the fire. Among the certainties in life along with death and taxes is grief. Everyone will have to experience it at some point in their life. While it is not a pleasant experience, there are ways to constructively deal with it in a healthy manner instead of letting it descend into unhealthy habits. In today's episode of the Billionaires in Boxers Global Podcast, our host Phil Pelucha chats to Hawaii based Emily Thiroux Threatt who is the author of the book Loving and Living Your Way Through Grief. Thiroux is also a speaker on topics that are related to grief and loss. Thiroux-Threatt is passionate about being able to comfort and support people who need support with grief having experienced grief in her own life. Each chapter of Thiroux-Threatt's book gives the readers an insight into how they can constructively deal with the grieving process in a healthy manner. The book is available at several bookstores and online via Amazon. One of the common and unpleasant things about grieving is misunderstanding. A chapter in Thiroux-Threatt's book deals with forgiveness. It also includes insight into how the misunderstanding and confusion caused by grief can make one perceive a helpful person as being arrogant and rude. As human beings, we expect our children to grow up and leave home, go start their own lives; we also expect to grow old with our spouses, then die of old age. We don't expect that diseases like cancer or freak accidents will take our children and spouses way too early from us. Treatments no longer workingDisease is too advanced, doctors say there is no use of curative treatments , they are offering palliative care...You are shocked, numb and saddened by this sudden turn of events. You feel like you are on another planet, maybe you are crying. But losing people dear to us is part of the human experience. Life doesn't follow our structure, rules or wishes, there is no should or shouldn't be happening in life.Grief does not only happen after death. Grief can start the moment your loved one receives a bad prognosis, long before death, even though it isn't understood or acknowledged. What we don't realize is that even though our loved ones are here now, and we still have the opportunity to spend time with them, we are grieving for what we are about to lose. In today's episode, Emily Thiroux Threatt shares her story of losing not one but two spouses. How she was able to pull herself from the dark hole, turned her grief and experience to helping others who are grieving. Welcome to this week's episode of the StephUp Podcast! Thank you for your support and for coming back each week to listen. This episode features special guest, Emily Thiroux Threatt. Emily is a speaker, retired English professor and author of “Loving and Living Your Way Through Grief”. As someone who was twice widowed, she found writing down her thoughts and feelings was a healing process. In order to help one of her close friends deal with the loss of her husband, Emily's writings to her ended up becoming her book! Emily explains that grief comes from more than just the loss of a loved one. We can experience grief in many different ways like losing a job or a relationship or living through a pandemic. Saying something positive to someone about the loss they are going through is a much nicer way than saying, “I'm sorry for your loss.” “Living and Loving Your Way Through Grief” is a book for everyone, not just those dealing with grief. Forgiving ourselves is a huge part in moving forward in life. In the book, Emily speaks about how important self-care is, especially when you go through the tough times. Emily believes in finding joy in the pain. Gratitude is a huge part of her life and she finds writing down the things she is grateful for helps in the journey."You will come to an understanding that 'grief' doesn't heal. If you have been trying to heal your grief, try instead to heal your feelings about grief. Grief doesn't heal just like your reason for grieving doesn't miraculously go away, but you can feel better. Start taking responsibility for your joy, for living your best life." - "Loving and Living Your Way Through Grief". Follow Emily on her website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram. On this live coaching Real Talk segment I help Emily Thiroux Threatt work through the narratives of guilt she had about charging people who are in grief. As a heart centered entrepreneur she was very comfortable with giving, that when it came to receiving her stories of “people in grief are in pain and not in a place to pay” kept her from realizing that her gift is really lessening the time and intensity individuals stay in their pain. On this episode we cover: Emily's story of multiple losses that catalyzed her intimate knowledge of grief and the path through it Emily's ultimate message that we can grieve and still be happy How Emily turned her pain and message into a published book How Emily's focus on providing comfort, support and love was a partial block to realizing the value she was providing for the world The realization that she had a story about feeling guilty for charging people in grief as they were suffering and how I helped her transcend it on the call Her live mindset shift that her gift is providing people in grief a way to collapse the time of being in pain and decrease the intensity of the pain AND that it's a service she can charge for About Emily Thiroux Threatt Emily Thiroux Threatt is the author of Loving and Living Your Way Through Grief: A Comprehensive Guide to Reclaiming and Cultivating Joy and Carrying on in the Face of Loss. "In life we all experience loss ,whether a loved one dies or when anyone/anything that we loved is no longer in our lives. We joyfully anticipate the birth of a baby ,spending time reading books and taking classes ,attending baby showers .However when loss occurs ,we are generally unprepared .Many of us ignore it ,or we just assume it won't happen to us. Most of us live in some state of denial until loss occurs and then we are lost".
