And welcome back to Britain Under the Microscope. 欢迎回来【闲话英伦】. Hello, 安澜. Hi Lulu. Hi, everyone. So let me propose a topic. Okay. This is a question that has been bugging me for ages. There's one word in British culture that I find very difficult to translate correctly or accurately into Chinese. This is the word posh, p-o-s-h. I know some of you listening to this show, you probably think Lulu you're a translator, easy, just look it up online and dictionary. But it's not so much I don't know the word because that has so much cultural connotation. Yes, the idea of posh really changes its meaning constantly. So first things first, if you look it up in English-Chinese dictionary, ‘posh' probably can be translated into上流社会的,优雅的, things like that. But it has so many more meanings. The first question I'm gonna ask you is posh a good word or a bad word. It depends. I knew it. So for example, you use the Chinese word 优雅 which is more elegant in English. Now we could describe a place as posh, so a posh restaurant, a posh car, posh clothes. That just means it's expensive, it's high quality, fancy, it's fancy, it's luxurious, maybe. But it's when you describe somebody as posh that becomes a bit negative.  If I say 安澜 is really posh. I would not take that as a compliment. So if you say someone is really posh, they have posh accent, what you're doing is you're being a little bit negative. You're saying they're pretentious. Pretty much.就是有点装. 对吧?装着高大上的感觉. Pretentious and also snobbish as well. Snobbish means... meaning you look down on other people, you think you're better. But keep in mind. Posh is very subtle. If you use it to describe things, locations, it's good, it means luxurious, expensive; but use it to describe people usually quite negative, it focuses more on snobbery and pretentious. Yes, that's right. But that still hasn't answered the question. What is posh? Seriously, what is... well I know you're not. I'm not, very much, common as Muck. What is posh? Is it just higher class?Mostly, yes. Now to be posh is not just about money. Is you have a certain family background, you have a certain identity around kind of where you live, what you do and also the people that you hang out with. It still sounds really vague. I mean if only there's some sort of criteria. Funny you should say that, there was actually a survey in 2021 on how do you know if someone is posh?Okay, let's hear that. So these are the top 10 signs that someone is posh. 大家听听这个英国人自己评选出来的10条, 这10条如果你都中了或者中了绝大多数, 你就是英国人眼里的posh. So let's hear it. So number one, you went to boarding school. Isn't boarding school just when you actually live in school on campus就是寄宿学校. In China boarding school is just... boarding is just a function. Yeah, no, in the UK, boarding school or private school is incredibly posh because they're very expensive.

Does the visual word form area split in bilingual readers? A millimeter-scale 7T fMRI study

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.10.515773v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhan, M., Pallier, C., Dehaene, S., Cohen, L. Abstract: In expert readers, a brain region known as the visual word form area (VWFA) is highly sensitive to written words, exhibiting a posterior-to-anterior gradient of increasing sensitivity to orthographic stimuli whose statistics match those of real words. Using high-resolution 7T fMRI, we ask whether, in bilingual readers, distinct cortical patches specialize for different languages. In 21 English-French bilinguals, unsmoothed 1.2 mm fMRI revealed that the VWFA is actually composed of several small cortical patches highly selective for reading, with a posterior-to-anterior word similarity gradient, but with near-complete overlap between the two languages. In 10 English-Chinese bilinguals, however, while most word-specific patches exhibited similar reading specificity and word-similarity gradients for reading in Chinese and English, additional patches responded specifically to Chinese writing and, surprisingly, to faces. Our results show that the acquisition of multiple writing systems can indeed tune the visual cortex differently in bilinguals, sometimes leading to the emergence of cortical patches specialized for a single language. I love strolling on an empty street at five o'clock in the morning. I love discussing the absurdity of the world with wanderers. I enjoy watching the sunrise, slowly waking up the sleeping world. I enjoy having random philosophical conversations with strangers. I make mistakes. I mess things up. I invite chaos to my life, And then self-sabotage with cries. I'm on a journey to accept my weaknesses, Forgive others and myself at the same time. Sometimes I don't care what people say about my works. It's a record of how I see the world. Sometimes, I long for someone to see through my art. I only want to mean something to a special person's heart. I laugh a lot, and prank even more. I cherish tiny happiness in the world. Like the hot air on a cup of coffee on a rainy day; Or couples hug and kiss at the airport. I have a pessimistic mind but an optimistic heart. I love and hate humans at the same time. Their motives and behaviours confused me a lot. They can't understand my intuition either. Sometimes, I'd rather stay away from the crowd And keep people out. I moved from China to New Zealand in my 20s. Then left Auckland to London now to Lisbon at 30s. I've travelled to four continents. But there is no place I could call home. I'm always being a Christmas orphan, But never thought my loneliness is a misfortune. Through content creation, I found my roots and built relations. I am still on the road. I don't know life's next episode. I want to turn my existence into a poem. I want my life to become an exquisite art. Though the path is destined to be hard, Through authenticity, I could find my truth. 08/09/2021 Lisbon https://www.camelliayang.com/blog/cy @camelliayang

The Meaning of Surah 112 Al-Ikhlas The Pure Monotheism (纯一神教) From The Holy Quran Bilingual Edition In English & Chinese Languange Podcast Version. Tawhid is the indivisible oneness concept of pure monotheism (纯一神教) in Islam. Tawhid is the religion's central and single most important concept, upon which a Muslim's entire faith rests. It unequivocally holds that God is One (Al-Ahad) and Single (Al-Waḥid). Tawhid constitutes the foremost article of the Muslim profession of faith. The first part of the shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith) is the declaration of belief in the oneness of God. To attribute divinity to anything or anyone else, is shirk – an unpardonable sin according to the Qur'an, if repentance is not sought afterwards. Muslims believe that the entirety of the Islamic teaching rests on the principle of Tawhid. From an Islamic standpoint, there is an uncompromising monotheism at the heart of the Islamic beliefs (aqidah) which is seen as distinguishing Islam from other major religions. Moreover, Tawhid requires Muslims not only to avoid worshiping multiple gods, but also to relinquish striving for money, social status or egoism. The Qur'an asserts the existence of a single and absolute truth that transcends the world; a unique, independent and indivisible being, who is independent of the entire creation. God, according to Islam, is a universal God, rather than a local, tribal, or parochial one—God is an absolute, who integrates all affirmative values and brooks no evil. Islamic intellectual history can be understood as a gradual unfolding of the manner in which successive generations of believers have understood the meaning and implications of professing God's Unity. Islamic scholars have different approaches toward understanding it. Islamic theology, jurisprudence, philosophy, Sufism, even to some degree the Islamic understanding of natural sciences, all seek to explain at some level the principle of tawhid. The classical definition of tawhid was limited to declaring or preferring belief in one God and the unity of God. Although the monotheistic definition has persisted into modern Arabic, it is now more generally used to connote "unification, union, combination, fusion; standardization, regularization; consolidation, amalgamation, merger". Chapter 112 of the Quran, titled Al-'Ikhlas (The Sincerity) reads: Say: "He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jannah-firdaus-mediapro/message

The Holy Quran Healing (古兰经修复) Surah Al Mulk The Dominion (统治) For Spiritual Healing, Reduce Stress Depression & Finding Inner Peace Bilingual Edition In English Languange and Chinese Languange Podcast Version. Surah Al-Mulk (meaning 'The Sovereignty') is the 67th chapter (Surah) of the Quran. Surah Al-Mulk has 30 verses (Ayat). Surah Al-Mulk is a Meccan Surah, a Surah that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Mecca. Like any other Surah in the Quran, Surah Al-Mulk is very important. There are many virtues from reciting this Surah. The Virtues of Reciting Surah Al-Mulk Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, "There is a Surah in the Qur'an which contains thirty Ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is 'Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.' (Surat Al-Mulk 67)." [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud] So as we can see from the Hadith above, Surah Al-Mulk will intercede for its reciter (the person who recites it often) on the Day of Judgement until its reciter is forgiven by Allah (SWT). Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Humayd ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf had told him that Surat al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) was equal to a third of the Qur'an, and that Surah al-Mulk (Surah 67) pleaded for its owner. [Muwatta Malik] Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: "One of the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) put up a tent upon a grave without knowing that it was a grave. When he realized that is was a person's grave, he recited Surat Al-Mulk until its completion. Then he went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) [Indeed] I erected my tent without realizing that it was upon a grave. So when I realized there was a person in it I recited Surat Al-Mulk until its completion.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "It (Surah Al-Mulk) is a prevention, it is a salvation delivering from the punishment of the grave.'" [Tirmidhi] Based off the Hadith above, Surah Al-Mulk is also a prevention, and salvation delivering from the punishment of the grave. Reading Surat al-Mulk protects a Muslim from the trials of the grave, but how often does one have to read it? Once a day or more? What is meant is that a person should read it every night, act in accordance with the rulings contained in it, and believe in the information mentioned in it. It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ud said: Whoever reads Tabaarak allaahi bi yadihi’l-mulk [i.e., Soorat al-Mulk] every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) we used to call it al-maani’ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allah it is a Surah which, whoever recites it every night has done very well. Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 6/179; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, 1475. The scholars of the Standing Committee said: On this basis there is the hope that whoever believes in this Surah and reads it regularly, seeking the pleasure of Allah, learning the lessons contained in it and acting in accordance with the rulings contained therein, it will intercede for him [in the Hereafter]. Celebrations are held all over the globe. Let's follow our Washington correspondent He Fei to join the birthday party in University of Maryland, where the first Confucius Institute was built ten years ago. The Happy Birthday song kicks off the one-day celebration of the Confucius Institute Day on the campus of the University of Maryland. The President of the university Wallace Loh is proud that his university is leading the ten-year development in the US. "Confucius said that to move a mountain, you have to move a few stones. And so for the few stones that we moved right here in college park, a whole mountain has been moved, some four hundred Confucius Institutes around the country." As Mr. Loh has mentioned, starting from the University of Maryland, now there are 100 Confucius Institutes and more than 350 Confucius classes across the United States. And according to the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, about 850,000 people have registered in the classes or institutes globally. Donna Wiseman is the director of Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland. "Each year we touch about a thousand students through our Confucius classrooms and that's who you see around here are these elementary and middle school and high school students." The birthday party has been joined by students of all ages, who have shown their achievements in learning Chinese. Singing Chinese songs, performing folk Chinese dances, and reciting and explaining quotes of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius, all have a lot of fun in learning about the remote country, China. The learning experience with the Confucius Institute opens a whole new window to Olivia Brann. Attracted by the language and culture, the 23-year old even went to China to learn the Huangmei Opera. And now her dream is to find a way to connect the two countries through arts. "I wanna find a job that helps me connect the United States and China via the arts so we can have a more artistic relationship because a lot of students here are very focused on the economy and business and government, I think you can use art to really create a very strong bonds." Now a postgraduate of the University of Maryland, majored in English-Chinese translation, Nathaniel Hart Goldstein is a frequent volunteer and student at the university's Confucius Institute. Although started by chance, the young man said as he grew older, he felt more into the language and he would like to be a translator in the future. He believes the Confucius Institute is a good way to introduce China as a real person instead of a threatening rising power. "A lot of people are worried about China's rise and the Confucius Institute in some ways can help teach people about Chinese people and about the language and history. Everyone in the media so focused on what's going on in the South China Sea with the Philippines, the Vietnam, I think it is important that we remember that there are people in China too. I think that's very important." For the next ten years, Director Donna Wiseman says she would like to see more exchanges between the two countries especially among younger generations.

Juliane Jones, a singer-songwriter who just received a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, is our guest on Program #38 of the Middle Chamber Books and Music Podcast. Juliane talks about her specialization in Chinese operatic music, and how she has integrated Chinese lyrics into songs on her new CD, "The Space Between the Telephone Lines." We also hear several tracks from the CD. About Juliane Jones, from her website: [caption id="attachment_10061" align="alignleft" width="300"] Juliane Jones is a Ph.D. ethnomusicologist and a singer/songwriter whose new CD, "The Space Between the Telephone Lines," was just released.[/caption] Singer-songwriter and ethnomusicologist Juliane Jones finds harmony in what seems like self-identity dissonance. “I occupy a middle space – my world is about intersections,” the New York-based songstress explains. Juliane's father is Welsh, and her mother is from LA. She has lived internationally in five different places and speaks fluent Chinese and French. She is an ethnomusicologist by profession and an actively gigging musician. Evocatively, Juliane titles her kaleidoscopic, singer-songwriter, English-Chinese hybrid album The Space Between The Telephone Lines. Juliane's expansive artistry melds genres and inward/outward travelogues. It's an exquisitely curated showing of diverse identities, spanning the genres of indie, alternative, folk, pop, electronic music, and rock, as it incorporates her experiences from studying music in China and France. Her writing evokes the astute and playful lyrics of Serge Gainsbourg, and the vivid narratives in the French Chanson genre with elements of Canto-pop music, inspired particularly by the Chinese artist Faye Wong. Juliane has been building her artist profile through gigging in NYC's vibrant singer-songwriter scene and expanding her outreach through gigs nationally and internationally, most notably with intimate gigs in Shanghai. In addition, she's received exposure through having tracks played on Fairchild Radio and TV broadcast in Canada. A foundational moment in her life's work timeline occurred while in college in the East Asian Studies Department at the University of Chicago. She was studying the great Italian composer Giacomo Puccini and became inspired by the fact that he integrated Eastern music within one of his operas. It was a revelatory moment: Previously she was a prodigiously talented singer-songwriter with a separate intuitive gift for linguistics and understanding different cultures. This light bulb moment helped her discover the harmony in the space between these worlds. “Ethnomusicology and songwriting are similar in a lot of ways. Ethnography is really about description, observation, and interpretation. Songwriting is similar, but in writing songs the author can blend fact with fiction—it's more flexible,” she says. The Space Between The Telephone Lines uses pop conventions to explore intriguing, contrasting dialogues in music styles, cultures, and love. “The progress and innovations in pop have made it the perfect medium to explore different cultures and genres to create a fresh artistic vocabulary,” Juliane reveals. The album standout, “When You Sleep,” blends elegantly essential classical motifs with sweet folk pop. The accompanying video presents a charmingly quaint snapshot of new love. “That's about when you get to that point in a relationship when you are so crazy-mad-in-love that you start second-guessing what you have,” Juliane says. The sublime, pastoral pop of “Rhythm & Blues” dissects long distance relationships in a playfully conceptual video and lyric scheme, referencing the Chinese myth of the red string of fate that connects destined lovers. Throughout the album Juliane innovatively explores an East-West cultural exchange. She sings portions of songs in Chinese, boldly challenging herself to keep thematic and melodic continuity within Western pop conventions. Further enriching the East-West artistic dialogue, Juliane covers a song by beloved Canto-pop artist Faye Wong who previously ignited her own cultural exchange with a gorgeous version of the Cranberries “Dreams.” The album was tracked in Nashville and produced by Juliane and Doug Beiden. Reflecting on the profound journey to arrive at The Space Between The Telephone Lines, Juliane says: “For me, answering big questions about music, culture, and life has always been a part of my songwriting. I'm always looking for new ways of understanding music, and I've always been interested in how writing music can be linked to individual biography and social history. I'm forever fascinated with that moment of creation, it always seems magical.” Subscribe in a reader Subscribe to the RSS feed for Middle Chamber Books and Music Podcasts.
