We're talking about a topic that's not just about numbers; it's about people, fairness, and understanding. That's right, we're talking about pay transparency. Ever wondered how this simple concept can make your work life better? Our guest, Hannah Williams, the creator of the viral sensation Salary Transparent Street, has been hitting the streets asking strangers to share what they do and how much they make. Her mission is to combat discriminatory tendencies in employment and close pay gaps that affect women, POC, workers with disabilities, and the LGTQ+ community. I'm a huge fan of Hannah's, and I know you'll be, too, after our conversation. We'll explore on this vault episode how pay transparency can help shrink the wage gap, create a happier workplace, and promote fairness. Plus, Hannah's sharing juicy information on what to do if you find out you're underpaid. You know, we all are like emotional monkeys that live in the moment regarding money. Have you ever found yourself in the habit of shopping on Amazon late at night only to realize that you don't really need what you just bought? You are so not alone. The good news, according to Val Agostino, the CEO and co-founder of Monarch Money, the modern personal finance management platform and my favorite personal finance management platform, says this is all part of being a human. In this Ask Shannah episode, I'm covering some of my favorite tips to save money inspired by a question from Brett. This question comes from Brett – "Hi, Shannah, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I've listened to this show since 2016, and even though you've changed it up over the years, it's still one of my favorites. There are a lot of dude money podcasts, but I really like a softer approach and one that feels very non-judgmental. So thank you. I'm in my late 30s and doing pretty well financially, but I always seem to end the month without being able to save a lot of money. Am I doing something wrong? Can you give me any ideas of how much I save and any tips or tricks that you have to save money every month? Thanks a ton.” Thank you for being a part of our community! We couldn't do it without you. How often have you told yourself, “Self, I should be giving money to more needy people. Yes, I really should.” Only to follow that up with, welp, another month went by, and I didn't give anything. Now I feel bad about myself. Look, let me let you off the hook here. The idea of giving and that your life shouldn't be selfish is pretty universal. I think we can all agree that we feel some sort of moral obligation to give our money and time to help others. But as our guest, Adam Nash, CEO and co-founder of Daffy, a new fintech platform focused on charitable giving, said in the opening, there are two problems that we all face - how do I build giving into my budget and who do I give the money to? This Paradox has an official term - the generosity gap - which says there is this big gap between people who want to give to charity, but life gets in the way, so you end up not giving. This episode is for you if you've put Give More to the Causes that are important to you in 2024 on your to-do list. Adam and I talk about how you can create regular charitable contributions with ease, how to connect to organizations you want to give to, and some clever ways charitable giving can help you at tax time. Loud Budgeting: Should You Publicly Announce Your Money Goals

In recent weeks, this term, loud budgeting has made its way into the mainstream conversation. So, which camp are you in - shouting loudly about your money goals, or would you rather keep them to yourself? I think we need to talk about it. It's Friday, and typically, I answer an Ask Shannah question, but this week, something came to my attention that I thought we should talk about instead. So many of you have sent in questions about budgeting, how to do it, how to make it work, and also some questions about how to manage the fears around budgeting - what if you go over budget and someone knows about it or judges you or shames you for how you spend your money. I'm glad you feel safe enough to share those thoughts with me. Money is emotional, and in everyday society, it doesn't feel safe to talk about those emotions - maybe you don't even correlate those feelings you have with the underlying cause - money. So that brings us to this idea of loud budgeting. It's certainly a catchy phrase, but what does it mean, and will it work for you? Ah, love and money - since it's the Month of Love, we need to talk about it. Love and money are complicated things that bring up so many different emotions and feelings that are very real. You know what I'm talking about if you've ever been in a relationship. And look, even if you don't talk about money with your partner or keep separate bank accounts, those feelings are still simmering under the surface. That's where my two friends, Heather and Doug Boneparth, come in. Yep, a couple who talks about money for a living. Doug is a CFP and founder of Bone Fide Wealth. You may recognize him from CNBC and countless articles in popular publications. Heather, his wife, is a “celebrity” in her own right as a writer and former corporate attorney who now runs business and legal affairs for their company. She and Doug have joined forces to create their popular newsletter, The Joint Account, and are working on a second book, navigating the power struggle over money in relationships. In this episode, we collectively roll up our sleeves to have a fun and insightful conversation about how to practically navigate these power struggles and dive deep into some of the most common issues couples have around money, like what to do if one partner wants to splurge on something and the other is admittedly against it. Been there and done that one. If you're in a relationship or looking to get into one, this episode is just what the Love Dr. ordered. How many times have you said the following, “I'm really going to focus on saving money this year,” only to find yourself doing quite the opposite? As our guest, Anne Lester, a retirement expert, media commentator, top-rated speaker, and author of the new book Your Best Financial Life: Save Smart Now for the Future You Want, says most people feel like they don't have enough money to do the things they want to do, so saving money isn't a priority. It's not your fault; you are wired to want nicer things. You are wired to spend money to make yourself feel better - back to my point that money is emotional. Have you ever heard of the hedonic treadmill? It's the idea that getting nicer things and spending more money doesn't equate to happiness in the long term. So, if spending more money doesn't mean more happiness, why not focus on learning how to become a better saver to afford the things you want to do? Are You Financially Literate? What You Need to Know About Money with Vince Shorb

We throw around words like financial literacy, but what does it really mean? If you're like me, you didn't grow up learning about money in school and what your parents taught you; I guess you still had many questions when you got to the big, bad, real world. So you were left to figure out how to money on your own, stumbling through paying off debt, saving, and investing money. But is money really that complicated after all? Our guest, Vince Shorb, founder of the National Financial Educators Council, says that the biggest misconception about money is that it's complicated. If we at least learn the basics, we'll do pretty well. In this episode, Vince is sharing what it means to be financially literate (and don't worry if you're still learning about money, we all are) and why it's so important that you teach your kids about money from an early age so we can all collectively change financial literacy for future generations. In this episode of Ask Shannah, I'm answering a question from Laquita. “Shannah, your podcast has saved my life. I can't tell you what a mess I was before. I felt all over the place and wasn't motivated, even though I wanted to change things. I was recently talking to my girlfriends about money and how some people, you know who I'm talking about, I'm sure, say we have to follow rules. It just doesn't feel right to me. I thought it might be interesting to have an episode about some money myths that we're told are true but aren't. Thanks again. I recommend your show to everyone…I'm even a bit aggressive about it." Well, Ethan's sharing the details behind a financial plan, how you can create one, and what to do when life throws you some curveballs and the planning doesn't go as planned. Getting engaged can be a stressful time and a very expensive time. When do you propose? Who proposes to whom? How much money should you really spend on an engagement ring? What if you've never really talked about money before? These are just a few questions that our guest Kat McCoy, a hopeless romantic and the owner of Best Kept Jewelry Concierge and Proposal Prep, is here to help you with. I share this story in the episode, but when I got engaged to my husband, Jeff, we mutually bought the engagement ring; I picked it up and then put it on the counter when I got home. Jeff said, “OK, what am I supposed to do with this thing.” I was like, I don't know, I guess you are supposed to propose. We laugh about it now, but the dynamics of the engagement process, even though exciting, can be stressful and anxiety-filled. In this episode, Kat breaks down the narrative around who proposes to whom, whether your engagement ring is an investment and some important love and money questions to ask your future spouse…before you walk down the aisle. Ever wonder what personal finance topics worry everyone else? You're not alone. We all wonder if our view of the world (and personal finance, by extension), are the same that other people hold. That's why today we're live from the floor of the 2023 Podcast Movement Conference with two other great podcasters: Shannah Game from Everyone's Talkin' Money and Paula Pant from Afford Anything. Both Shannah and Paula, along with our own OG share their take on how our audience worries have changed this year. We tackle every personal finance topic from inflation to employment to interest rates...and more. But that's not all of the personal finance fun. We kick it back to Doug, who's holding down the fort in mom's basement for us, with a trivia question that you just might get right... Truly the takeaway from this year's version of what's become an annual episode for us? It's that while personal finance is truly personal, it turns out that the one constant is that the world always is changing, and if something seems like a "sure thing," it's sure to become unsure at some point. In one discussion, the conversation moves to inflation, which three years ago wasn't even on the radar as a hot topic. Today, inflation is driving many of the worries that we have, from interest rates to real estate prices. It's true that the world of personal finance only has a few topics to master, and yet, staying on top of them so that you make better decisions is always more challenging (and yes, sometimes even fun!) than you may think. In this episode of Everyone's Talkin' Money, I'm back with another fascinating topic: home buying in today's market and whether it's a good time to buy real estate. I was walking around my neighborhood this morning and was blown away by the number of people selling, buying, and remodeling houses. I was thinking there's so much talk about high-interest rates and how expensive housing prices have gotten, but it doesn't seem to be deterring anyone from going about their normal buying, selling, and remodeling home business. So then I thought, if you're looking to buy your first home, is there ever a “right” time to buy? Lucky for us, Bianca D'Alessio, who is the Ranked #1 Real Estate Broker in New York and New York State and #14 in the Nation for 2022, manages a $10B real estate portfolio for Nest Seekers International and is the Star of Selling the Hamptons on Max(formerly known as HBO) is our guest. You'll learn: How to pave your way to first-time home buying in this market How to be competitive when buying Why lenders are more concerned about your credit card debt than your student loan debt If the Airbnb market is really a bust Why staying in your home for 10+ years is probably the best investment you'll ever make Oh, and we'll also talk some dirt about Selling the Hamptons Links Selling the Hamptons Nest Seekers International Bianca on Instagram How To Connect with Shannah: Join the Everyone's Talkin' Money Newsletter, where you get insider tips, exclusive content, and takeaways from each episode https://tinyurl.com/etmnewsletter  Ask Shannah a question on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/shannahgame/ or TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@shannahgame  Submit a money question for Shannah to answer in an upcoming episode https://tinyurl.com/askshannahq  Leave a 5-star Review here https://ratethispodcast.com/etm  Be a Featured Guest on an episode https://everyonestalkinmoney.com/contact/ Time Stamps [00:00:23] Everyon's Talkin' Money podcast host welcomes all, discusses is it the right time to buy. However, personal preference and money habits should also come into play. You'll learn how to figure out what card is right for you.
