The intersection of the First Amendment, parental rights, and educational texts has become a topic of significant conversation over the past several years. As Christians, we know that God's design for raising children is in the context of a home with a loving father and mother—and he gave parents the responsibility to raise their children in accordance with His Word. This may seem obvious, but our society is increasingly pushing back against God's design by undermining “parental rights.” While in a fallen world parents don't always seek what is best for their children and should be held accountable by God-given authorities, in most cases, moms and dads should be able raise their children according to their deeply held beliefs, ensuring their children are protected from things like the harmful effects of radical ideas about gender and sexuality. So, why and how are parental rights being brought up at the Supreme Court this term in a case titled United States v. Skrmetti? On today's episode, you'll hear from two lawyers—Matt Sharp and Kayla Toney—who are well acquainted with these legal challenges and how they are related to radical gender ideology. Matt Sharp serves as senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom, where he is the director of the Center for Public Policy. In this role, he leads ADF's team of policy experts as they craft legislation and advise government officials on policies that promote free speech, religious freedom, parental rights, and the sanctity of human life.Sharp has also worked on important cases advancing religious freedom and free speech. He earned his J.D. in 2006 from the Vanderbilt University School of Law. A member of the bar in Georgia and Tennessee, he is also admitted to practice in several federal courts.Kayla Toney is Associate Counsel with First Liberty Institute, concentrating on religious liberty matters and First Amendment rights for clients of all faiths. Prior to joining First Liberty, Kayla litigated religious freedom cases as a Constitutional Law Fellow at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. She clerked for Judge Gregory E. Maggs on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Kayla also worked as a litigation associate.Kayla earned her law degree from George Washington University. A native of Michigan, Kayla is based in First Liberty's Washington, D.C. office and is licensed to practice law in Virginia and D.C.

The Atlantic City Fire Department requires all personnel who respond to fires or other emergencies to follow the proper use of an air mask when exposed to hazardous air. To ensure a proper fit, employees are prohibited from growing facial hair that could interfere with the mask seal. Plaintiff, Pastor Alexander Smith requested a religious accommodation to wear a short beard, arguing that growing the beard was an exercise of his faith and that wearing the mask was not part of his technician role in the department. This request was denied, citing safety concerns, prompting Smith to pursue legal action, alleging First Amendment, Equal Protection, and Title VII violations. However, the District Court of New Jersey ruled in favor of the fire department. Together, the Harvard Religious Freedom Clinic and First Liberty Institute are appealing his case to the Third Circuit, with oral argument on October 30. His documentary explores the history of the Pleasant View Historic Site, a three-acre piece of land that his great-great-grandfather helped purchase in 1868. The site includes a schoolhouse, a church, and a social hall that were central to the black community of Quince Orchard. Jason emphasizes the importance of preserving and restoring these buildings as a way to connect with history, build community, and pass on a legacy to future generations. There were some fun takeaways from this one including:How taking the time to connect with our ancestors and learn their stories can have a profound impact on our own lives. How giving back to your community can lead to unexpected outcomes and starting a project before you feel ready (or before you even have a camera in his case) can lead to meaningful outcomes. What the Hell Is Going On

Two years ago, at the start of the war in Ukraine, $300 billion in Russian assets were frozen in Western banks. The assumption behind Western economic pressure on Russia was that sanctions and seizures of oligarchs' funds would have a chilling effect on both Russia's economy and the pursuit of the war in Ukraine. They have not. As a result, for only the second time in history, the United States is considering seizing Russian assets. Congress, in the lead, has brought the Biden administration around. The President needs new authorities to move forward. But seizing the frozen $300 billion – only $5 billion of which is in the United States – and re-distributing it to Ukraine for reconstruction and other reparation efforts is fraught. Will the Euros go along? Will this radical change affect how states approach seizing aggressors' assets? Perhaps more importantly, is the Biden administration's signal of approval for the policy just talk, or will Washington finally pull together measures that hit Russia where it hurts?Stephen Rademaker, currently Senior of Counsel at Covington and Burling LLP, has wide-ranging experience working on national security issues in the White House, the State Department, and the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Serving as an Assistant Secretary of State from 2002 through 2006, he headed at various times three bureaus of the State Department, including the Bureau of Arms Control and the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. Previously, he served as General Counsel of the Peace Corps, Associate Counsel to the President in the Office of White House Counsel, and as Deputy Legal Adviser to the National Security Council. Menendez' home—some of which contained fingerprints or DNA of Fred Daibes, a real estate developer also accused of bribing Menendez and his wife Nadine. According to The New York Times, Daibes pled guilty to financial crimes in 2022. Senator Menendez and his wife have both denied the criminal conduct alleged by prosecutors. Taylor Hawes is the Director of the Colorado River Program for the Nature Conservancy. As the leader of the program, she guides TNC's efforts to conserve the freshwater biodiversity of the Colorado River Basin while also meeting human demands for water– challenging objectives given the wide-ranging stresses facing the river today. But despite the challenges brought about by climate change, overallocation, and increasing demand, Taylor and her team are making great strides toward finding long-term solutions to create a sustainable future for the Colorado River and the people, plants, and animals that depend on it. - Taylor grew up on the east coast, and, from a young age, she felt a deep connection to land, water, and natural resources. She fell in love with wide-open spaces while on a course with the National Outdoor Leadership School, and she's devoted her career to protecting land and water in the West. Prior to joining the team at TNC, she served as Associate Counsel to the Colorado River Water Conservation District on Colorado's Western Slope, working on water quality, water policy, environmental permitting, and water rights litigation. - If you pay attention to the news, then you'll know that the Colorado River has been receiving tons of media attention for the dire conditions and projections facing the entire region. Reservoirs are at historic lows, temperatures are rising, and the need for more water is increasing. In the first part of this conversation, I ask Taylor to decipher many of the surface-level sound bytes that I've heard in the news, and she provides some much-needed context and background regarding the river basin's current challenges. We then talk about how TNC is working to solve these problems, by building community support, working collaboratively with Tribal nations, and helping agricultural producers become more efficient. And we spend the last part of the conversation talking about Taylor's professional journey– why she chooses to do this work, what gives her hope, and her goals for her work on the Colorado River. - This was a timely conversation, and I hope it sheds some light on the challenges facing the Colorado River today– and provides some optimism about the river's future. Thanks to Taylor for taking the time to chat, and thank you for listening. --- Taylor Hawes TNC's Colorado River work --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) released a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input from the public on two requirements of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH Act), as amended in 2021. How does it impact cybersecurity and risk management programs? Why do (should) CISOs care about this? Are we about to throw more money at this problem?Maybe a smart question: Is there an opportunity to be smarter? While all are important, that final question is certainly the most valid question. But, the details of the provisions will come when the community feedback comes in. The thing to make note of as you listen to this episode is that there's an opportunity to shape these provisions for the better of the overall healthcare ecosystem, moving beyond lowest common denominator frameworks, standards, and controls.John Houston and Michael Parisi share their thoughts in the current state of cyber risk management affairs, the opportunity to do more in the RFI and potential responses coming in from the community, and how John's experience with an advanced, mature risk management program at UPMC can help set the bar for what's possible — not just from a guidance or framework perspective, but from a fiscally responsible, scalable, operational perspective.Listen in to learn more about the RFI  and the role you can have in shaping its outcome. Not in the healthcare space? You should still pay attention. There's a lot going on in the healthcare sector that other industries can leverage.Note: This story contains promotional content. Learn more.____________________________GuestsJohn HoustonVice President, Information Security and Privacy; Associate Counsel at UPMC [@UPMC]On Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-houston-5b9915b/Michael Parisi, VP of Adoption, @HITRUST____________________________Catch the webcast and the podcast here: https://itspm.ag/hitrust-hhs-ocr-hitech-rfiBe sure to visit HITRUST at https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb to learn more about their offering.____________________________ResourcesNews Release: https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2022/04/06/hhs-ocr-seeks-public-comment-on-recognized-security-practices-sharing-civil-money-penalties-monetary-settlements-under-hitech-act.htmlIndividuals seeking more information about the RFI or how to provide written or electronic comments to OCR should visit the Federal Register to learn more: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/04/06/2022-07210/considerations-for-implementing-the-health-information-technology-for-economic-and-clinical-health____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity____________________________Are you interested in telling your story?https://www.itspmagazine.com/telling-your-story

I've known France a little bit for a while now. The glimpses that I've had into his professional background and his personal nature have made me excited to have this interview. It's been a long time coming. We go through a lot in this interview. And you'll see from France's background in this interview, he had military service with the Army. He worked as a lawyer, most notably as Associate Counsel to President George W. Bush. And then he's had an unbelievable entrepreneurial journey, including founding companies that have generated over $600 million in combined sales with over 1200 employees. He's succeeded in so many different facets. And it's easy to see why in this conversation, because he's very thoughtful and deliberate about how he approaches his life, most notably through a commitment to service. There's a lot we talk about. But here's a couple that stand out to me. I loved his idea of what he calls T shaped careers. And he's borrowed that from someone else I forget the person originally coined that, but it's a thought of using the intersection of both breadth and depth as you approach your career. He talks about ignoring sunk costs. And I think that's such great advice personally and professionally. He talks about what he calls these hold my beer moments where he sees that there's a great opportunity that he has to pursue, and that's led to some of the best advances in his own life and career. We talk about the difference between following a set path and openness to serendipity. And we also talk about what he learned by commissioning twice in the US Army army and being honorably discharged twice in the US Army, once at 21, once at 35, and the differences in that. And then lastly, we talked about execution and innovation organizations, and how these are two different skill sets, and how you can be alternating as a leader throughout your career of judging whether it's better to be executing, or innovating in any given moment.
