A while back, I read the book entitled, "Father of Faith Missions." The book is still in print. It is said about this book: Modest and unobtrusive, Anthony Norris Groves did not consider himself a gifted evangelist. His name is not usually mentioned alongside William Carey and Hudson Taylor, but Groves had a pioneering influence that went beyond his personal reach. He and his family followed God's call to Baghdad and India, leaving their comfortable English lives behind. Though he doubted his success as a missionary, Groves' character and ideas shaped the people who followed him as he followed Christ. Exhaustively researched, Father of Faith Missions is not merely about the life of one missionary but also a record of Groves influence on missionary initiatives and the Brethren movement. Drawing upon Groves own journals and letters in addition to copious scholarship, this book is both a journey into history and a reminder that God's faithfulness is as true now as it was then. I tell you this because this video/audio is a book that Anthony Norris Groves wrote entitled: Christian Devotedness. "Christian Devotedness" by Anthony Norris Groves is a small booklet. Subtitled The Consideration of Our Savior's Precept, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth". It is a little Bible study, expounding Jesus' teaching concerning stewardship of material possessions. He exhorted all Christians to live economically, trusting God to supply their needs, and devoting their income to the cause of the Gospel. Groves put into personal practice the principles of Christian devotedness which he advocates in this booklet, and contended for the possibility and blessing of accepting the teachings of the Lord literally.

Sabbath School Q2 2022: Genesis - Week 13 Is it possible for us to have free will and at the same time be possible for someone, anyone, to intimately know the future? The answer must partly depend on what we mean by "intimately?" The most common view of God's knowledge of the future is that it is completely exhaustive in every detail and also that it is infallible. So, that is the meaning of "intimately" we'll be addressing here. If God's foreknowledge is both exhaustive and infallible, the future cannot be anything other than what it is already fated to be. This doesn't mean God necessarily wills everything to happen the way it does or that He causes everything, but if God knows the entire future exhaustively and infallibly, that would still mean that nothing can happen other than what God already knew would happen and that means that the future is essentially fated; there is only one way it can be - the way God knows it will be. If there is only one path to take, then our ability to make free choices is just an illusion. On the other hand, if we have free will and are truly able to choose our next thought and action, then the future, in reality, has an infinite number of possibilities. The future, in this case, does not exist yet - not even for God. This fact is very exciting! According to scripture, our futures have real and varied possibilities caused by our free will choices. Additionally, scripture indicates that God is even affected by our free will choices. In other words, the future is not set for God either. But the fact of the matter is that we have the power to direct our future to a large degree simply by choosing to exercise our free will. We can even choose, through depending on Christ, to stop sinning.. Satan wants to keep us in sin and to do this he needs to demoralize our will. He does this through a variety of false ideas, including the idea that the future is already set. To make these deceptions appealing, they are often presented in ways that make it appear that they honor God when in reality, they don't. For example, most believe that God knows the whole future because he is outside of space and time. People often like this idea because it sounds like it is exalting God since it supposedly places him "above" and "beyond" humanity. But the idea that God is outside of space and time is nowhere even implied in the Scriptures. This belief really took its current form with medieval philosophers and theologians and they plainly admitted that they got these ideas from ancient Greek philosophers, especially Plato. In truth, these ideas about God don't exalt Him at all, they actually make Him a nonentity and totally unrelatable. And, as we've already explained, they undermine our will and our futures. Scripture presents us with a future that is not fixed, not for us, and not for God. And it calls us to exercise our will to bring about a future full of blessings rather than one full of curses. In this episode, series host Charlotte Jansen, a British journalist and author, speaks with Maya Goded from her home in Mexico City. Goded is no ordinary arbiter of the photographic form, spending years, sometimes decades, working on individual research projects and painstakingly building visual documents of women and womanhood from every stratum of Mexican society. From her sensitive and inquiring photographs of women’s precarious existence, to her subtly moving portrait of Maria Grazia Chiuri, she offers a thoughtful discussion of her working processes and her socially conscious approach to contemporary life. Maya Goded was born in Mexico City in 1967 and currently resides in the beautiful Coyoacán neighborhood which is also home to Frida Kahlo’s Blue House (La Casa Azul). She assisted other photographers before embarking on her solo career, and her first major project was a three-year endeavor photographing Afro-Mexicans, titled Black Earth. She has consistently focused on themes of female sexuality, gender violence, prostitution and the traditional role of motherhood assigned to women in Mexican society. In 2001, she held a major solo exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, titled Sex Workers 1995-2000, which was hailed for its penetrating, refreshingly nuanced portrayal of its subjects. An unstinting commitment to listening and sensitive observation is the hallmark of Goded’s work, which has allowed her to reveal so many layers of women’s lives without cliché or condescension. Goded has received numerous prestigious awards for her work, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the FotoPres La Caixa prize and the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund. Here, Charlotte Jansen speaks to Maya Goded about the breadth of her practice and how she views the world at this extraordinary time. They discuss how lockdown has forced each of us into a reckoning with ourselves and our lives and how this year’s eerie silence has led to millions of personal examinations of the potential for change. Challenging incarceration and policing was central to the post-war Black Freedom Movement. In his new book Those Who Know Don't Say: The Nation of Islam, the Black Freedom Movement, and the Carceral State (UNC Press, 2020), Garrett Felber centers the Nation in the Civil Rights Era and the making of the modern carceral state. In doing so, he reveals a multifaceted freedom struggle that focused as much on policing and prisons as on school desegregation and voting rights. The book examines efforts to build broad-based grassroots coalitions among liberals, radicals, and nationalist to oppose the carceral state and struggle for local Black self-determination. It captures the ambiguous place of the Nation of Islam specifically, and Black nationalist organizing more broadly, during an era which has come to redefined by non-violent resistance, desegregation campaigns, and racial liberalism. By provocatively documenting the interplay between law enforcement and Muslim communities, Felber decisively shows state repression and Muslim organizing laid the groundwork for the modern carceral state and the contemporary prison abolition movement which opposes it.
