Fabricio Andrey will compete at The IBJJF Crown on Sunday, November 19th. He joined the podcast to talk about the event and training at Alliance with Michael Langhi and Fabio Gurgel.
We're Kicking It | The Stories Behind the Legends and warriors of Martial arts greats
Professor Leonardo Vieira, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Romero Cavalcanti, being famous for combining one of the most crowd-pleasing games in BJJ with an amazing track record. Leo Vieira was also the co-founder of important teams such as Brasa Clube de Jiu-Jitsu and Checkmat BJJ, becoming in the process one of grappling's most important coaches by developing athletes such as Marcus Almeida ‘Buchecha', Lucas Leite, João Assis, and many others. Leozinho is also one of the Top BJJ Competitors of All Time by BJJ Heroes.Lineage: Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rolls Gracie > Romero Cavalcanti > Leonardo VieiraMain Achievements:1st Place ADCC (2003, 2005)1st Place IBJJF World Championship (1999)1st Place IBJJF Pan Championship (2002/2004)1st Place CBJJ Brazilian Nationals (1998)2nd Place ADCC (2011/2007)2nd Place IBJJF World Championship (1997)3rd Place IBJJF World Championship (2000)1st Place IBJJF World Championship (1996 brown)Weight Division: Peso Leve (76 kg / 167 lbs)Favorite Position/Technique: Brabo Choke, Guard Passing.Association/Team: CheckmatThe following year, his first as a black belt, Leo fought his way to the final against Marcio Feitosa in the first of many historical duels between the two. This first fight went to the Gracie Barra fighter, Feitosa, but in 1998 when the two met once again in the final, Leonardo was the victor in one of the hardest fights of the event. 1998 was the last time Leonardo won the World Championship, although he did make the final again in 1999 (losing to Royler Gracie) and placed 3rd in 2000.His career's highest point had not been reached however, that came in 2003 when Leonardo won the World's most prestigious Submission Grappling title, the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club), a gold medal achieved again in 2005.In between this period, Leozinho moved to Sao Paulo and was training under Fabio Gurgel at the Team Alliance HQ there until 2002 when a group of competitors joined up against the head coach Gurgel. Leonardo left the team together with most of the black belts that trained there. The argument (in broad strokes) was over the ‘Mundial‘ (World Championships by IBJJF federation) which occurred a week after the Copa do Mundo (World Cup). As the Copa do Mundo offered a good prize money to its competitors and the Mundial didn't, Leonardo and his teammates felt they should support this organization (CBJJO – Confederação de Jiu Jitsu Olimpico) and compete in it, Gurgel however decided against it for reasons that were never made public. The fighters went on to fight at the ‘Copa' and Gurgel banned them from the gym, and so Leozinho and the others formed another team, ‘Master Team' to honor the gym where this group had started training in the 1980's. The Master Team later became Brasa Clube de Jiu Jitsu.
O número da positividade então me inspirei no quadro do YouTube do meu camarada Viktor Doria 10 a zero e também no 10 back to back do lendário Fabio Gurgel, e decidi criar o 10 itens Top of Mind, Neste quadro falo 10 itens ao meu convidado e ele tem de me dizer a primeira coisa que lhe vier a cabeça. Hi Guys, I've just recorded my first podcast in English answering the following questions from our affiliates in the USA. If you want to learn more then please click on the link below. The idea is to record a podcast every month discussing a topic of your interest, so please comment below with your ideas. Questions: What is the right way to plan advanced classes? I have a good handle on the beginner and intermediate classes but I just do whatever is on my mind for the week when it comes to the advanced class. Is there a systematic way to organize content? How do you approach a white belt who signs up under the beginner program and he goes and rolls at some other schools open mat? I have spoken about the rolling thing, but I feel like I have no power over a student who is paying and decides he wants to go and roll at someone’s open mat. How should I approach this situation? What is the best way to find sales staff? How many employees do you have? What role do they have, and what would you consider fair pay? How many mat assistants do you have per number of kids on the mat. What are key ways to help develop a competitors mindset in order to be a champion. Along those lines of treating everyone equally what does everyone think about congratulating kids who placed in competitions in front of the class? And what do you do in terms of recognizing those competitors in their achievements? What would you limit that to in order to make sure you don’t inflate any egos? What have been the keys to a lifelong successful partnership between the three alliance founders. What advice can you give to someone entering or navigating business relationships. What to never do, what to always make sure you do etc. How do you deal with students with rank, that join? We get guys who switch to us as blue, purple, brown and honestly, sometimes they suck. No basics. Zero self defense. They haven’t really ever trained hard. We try to help them along, but you can see the frustration and feeling of being overwhelmed on their faces. Not to mention they just aren’t at the level of the average student at their rank or below. We’ve had a couple quit because they just feel like they wasted so many years in the past and it’s too hard to catch up. Not their fault. Their old academies did them a disservice. Aside from that, we can’t in good conscience promote them if they don’t have the minimum requirements we require from our students at their rank or below. Do you charge late fees on late payments? And if you do, after how many days late? I'd like to know what type of email marketing you consider to be more efficient and if you can describe the characteristics you feel the system should have to be considered an efficient prospecting tool.

Reaching a state of flow where you respond automatically and correctly to your opponent is the goal of martial arts training. But how do you get there? In this episode I go through what flow is, what it feels like, and some of the triggers and prerequisites for flow to occur. Hint: relaxation, competence, engaging with your environment, and having a single clear goal without distractions are all important. For more information on flow check out the book 'Flow' by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It's a classic! Today's episode is PURE GOLD for BJJ practitioners and No Gi grapplers. Fabio Gurgel - 4 time BJJ Black Belt World Champion (and trainer of more than 50 other world champions) - talks about his approach to passing the guard, including how to connect your moves, the evolution of guard passing, advice for older grapplers, when you should stop halfway through a guard pass to tire the other guy out, and alternatives to the modern styles of guard passing that rely on mobility, athleticism and floating from side to side above your opponent. Check out Fabio's instructional, The Pressure Passing System, available on DVD, online streaming and in app form at https://www.grapplearts.com/pressure
We had the pleasure and honor of interviewing Fabio Gurgel at the Alliance BJJ Framingham owned and operated by the Almeida Bothers Samuel and Saul. He is the head instructor and leader of Team Alliance at the Sao Paulo headquarters.Fabio Gurgel was also one of the best jiu-jitsu competitors of his generation with many important titles to his name, such as World Champion, Brazilian National champion and European Open champion. We asked questions about his work and teaching methodology for men over 40 years of age. I hope you enjoy this interview with Master Fabio Gurgel.
This discussion with multiple time BJJ world champion Fabio Gurgel was amazing. He talked about coming up under Jacare, being trained by Carlson Gracie to fight in Vale Tudo, and then battling Mark 'The Smashing Machine' Kerr in his prime under the old school, no gloves, no rounds, style Brazilian No Holds Barred rules. We also talked about the traditional vs modern jiu-jitsu debate, why the level of BJJ right now is the highest it's ever been, how stalling in matches was worse in the old days, what all world champions have in common, how to create world champions (and keep them on your team), making a living off of jiu-jitsu, and much more. I think you'll love it! If you want to support the podcast then please make sure to rate and review it in Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud or wherever you listen to it. That's hugely important and it's really helping! Thanks Stephan
[BJJ GLOBETROTTERS] The guys head up to USA Globetrotters camp and talk to Trenton “Botinha” Cooke. Trenton is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti. During his time at Alliance HQ, he trained under Jacare, Lucas Lepri, Fabio Gurgel, Bruno Malfacine, and many others.
A Black Belt under Fabio Gurgel, and the head instructor at Alliance HQ along side Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti, Leo Nogueira is not only one of the best Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world, but he also is one of the most humble and nicest people you will ever meet! Except when he is on the mat that is...he describes his fighting style as "cold" which after seeing many of his matches I translate "cold" for ruthless, but that is ok, because he started Jiu Jitsu for the self defense aspect of it, and it shows! His warrior spirit, and friendly personality make him one special individual, along with his ability to think 3 and 4 steps a head of his opponents! He is one of the best Jiu Jitsu practitioners the art has ever seen, and it was not only an honor, but a privilege to spend a few hours with Leo, and I cannot wait to see him again! We are joined in the studio by “Super Dave”… Also known as Dave Rothwell. Dave is a longtime Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who planted his roots in the sport during the very beginning of it’s inception in the province of BC. Until then, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was a sport only beginning to become popularized in southern US states as prolific Brazilians started moving north to start businesses and spread their knowledge. Dave is a part of the original crew in BC and has been actively teaching and competing internationally ever since. He is a World Champion, and has fought some of the sports most prolific fighters such as Fabio Gurgel and Saulo Ribeiro. With various accolades, his focus has turned almost exclusively to training and building a team with other like-minded practitioners. Thus, Pacific Top Team was born several years ago and has been growing ever since. In this episode, we explore the martial arts lifestyle and how it can help us in other areas of our life. Dave is an example of how getting your ego in check renders peaceful results, allowing us to fight our way towards a positive and fulfilling life. He tells us about the one win he's most proud of; how he got his blue belt in just three months, and his advice for current today's blue belts; the most important thing he's learned from Romero Jacare; what training with Fabio Gurgel is like (hint: TOUGH -- the easiest rounds at Fabio's were with current brown belt world champions); who his best training partners have been (including one who you've never heard of, but is 'better than a lot of black belt world champions'); the greatness of Bruno Malfacine; the two guys he thinks are the best sport competitors; his best single piece of advice for guard passing; how to have a long, healthy jiujitsu career; favorite competitors to watch; and more. Five time world champion and double gold Mundial winner Bernardo Faria joins us in studio for a great, wide-ranging conversation. Bernardo tells us who he considers the best competitor of all time (the answer may surprise you), what he learned from Fabio Gurgel and Marcelo Garcia, why entrepreneurs are drawn to jiujitsu, the difference wrestling made in his game, his thoughts on self defense and sport jiujitsu, the most common mistake most people make when doing the omoplata, and whether he's officially retired from competition. Bernardo has a new instructional series about the omoplata out this week: check it out! Thanks as always to our sponsors, US Grappling, Toro BJJ, and Cageside MMA! Eduardo Telles is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Fabio Gurgel and one of the most creative grapplers in the World. Famed for being a fan of the “Esquijitsu” (a nickname applied to his game which translates to: weird Jiu Jitsu) he created several attacks from the turtle position, a position that was deemed a weaker position by most grapplers before Telles created the turtle guard, revolutionizing what once was defensive ‘go-to' move. Eduardo Telles also created several trademark setups from a position that became famous as the Octupus Guard.
