In today's episode we are joined by Carson Brakke to discuss how early modern concepts and anxieties about hospitality and cannibalism influenced early modern literature and drama, most explicitly in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. Carson breaks down the early modern concept of hospitality and shares the cultural debates and dilemmas that centered around it and its inherent dangers. Join us as she guides us through the cognitive dissonance surrounding cannibalism for early modern Europeans, who simultaneously used it to other non-Europeans while possibly participating in cannibalism themselves! We also explore how readers and theatre-makers today can use this knowledge to interpret scenes of hospitality and cannibalism in Shakespeare and other early modern works. Content warning: cannibalism is discussed throughout this episode. Please listen with care. Our guest: Carson Brakke is a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and is writing her dissertation on representations of hospitality in early modern English literature. In addition to hospitality, her research interests include domesticity, food studies, and women's writing. To break up the solitary work of dissertating, Carson uses her TikTok platform to talk about early modern literature and the PhD experience. You can find her @glutenbergbible, where she's always looking to chat with more people about research, academia, and the weird and surprising sides of early modern English literature! Back in the 1960s – before Gloria Allred became one of America's most prominent women's rights attorneys – she says she was raped at gunpoint. She became pregnant and had a back-alley abortion that nearly killed her. “It did teach me a lesson,” Allred tells Art of Power host Aarti Shahani. “And the lesson is that abortion should be safe, legal, affordable and available.” In conversation with Shahani, Allred explains how that traumatic life event changed her worldview and preceded her decades-long career in civil rights law (10:20). She explains why she uses a cheeky sense of humor to get what she needs (4:30) and how she's represented some of the most famed names in women's rights, including “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade and O.J. Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson (14:35). Plus, Allred defends a long-standing practice she's been criticized for: negotiating non-disclosure agreements (26:20).
Scott Budnick might be best known for producing The Hangover trilogy, one of the most successful R-rated comedy franchises ever. But making frat-boy comedies and spending years among ladder-climbers and clout-chasers in Hollywood left Budnick wanting. “I just felt empty inside,” he tells Art of Power's Aarti Shahani. Budnick tells Shahani about the turn of events that led him to become one of California's foremost advocates for criminal justice reform. He explains how he broke into the film industry — and then why he left it to found the non-profit Anti-Recidivism Coalition. And he describes his pivot back to creating films — including the 2019 Michael B. Jordan drama Just Mercy — through One Community, a production company with an explicitly political agenda.
Journalist Aarti Shahani discusses her memoir with Vermont Edition host Mikaela Lefrak and a group of students from Essex High School.
Real estate is an unpredictable business. But Kaajal Shahani knows that when the market throws our business for a loop, sometimes the best thing we can do is learn to “just roll with it!” What you will learn in this episode: How Kaajal Shahani has mastered the art of creating consistency — even in an unpredictable industry like Real Estate Why she used to say she'd “never get into real estate,” and what changed her mind How Kaajal got a job as a buyer's agent even though she initially had no idea how to be one What happened when Kaajal left her first job in the industry to move back to her hometown in the Bay Area Why having an entire family of real estate professionals is helpful…and also not so helpful How Kaajal reacted when some of the most successful moments in her career were immediately followed by major market crashes Why Kaajal used to balk at the idea of having a daily routine — and why she swears by it now How “joking” about going on a sabbatical resulted in Kaajal taking a MONTH-LONG vacation with her entire family on her 40th birthday Kaajal's advice for anyone looking to create balance in their business and their life Just Roll with It! It's probably safe to assume that no one enters the real estate business because of the consistency it offers. You can have one of the greatest months of your career, only to have it immediately followed by one of the toughest. Kaajal Shahani, our guest on this episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, knows this all-too-well. After navigating the ups and downs the market has thrown her way throughout her career, she's learned that sometimes, creating consistency means embracing unpredictability with an attitude of, “just roll with it!” It Started with a “What's Next?” Since she grew up in a real estate family, Kaajal decided to pursue a career in a totally different world: corporate America. But, when the 9-to-5 life started to feel stifling, she found herself asking “what's next?” And that's where her story truly got started. While it was always an option she kept in the back of her mind, Kaajal's transition into the real estate industry happened much faster than she ever would have expected. Once she had her license, she left her 9-to-5 job, walked into a local realtor's office on a whim, and struck up a conversation with a broker. That conversation lead to another one with a different broker who was looking for a buyer's agent. And, even though she didn't know anything about being a buyers agent when she first started, Kaajal not only loved the work, but she also ended up closing 36 sales in her first year alone. Suffice to say, she'd found her fit. Navigating the Ups and Downs Kaajal had an incredible team behind her, a mentor to guide her, and with such a successful chapter under her belt, she decided to move back to the Bay Area to start her own business. Everything was falling into place. And then the market crashed… Getting a business off of the ground is never a walk in the park, but for Kaajal, it meant spending a year and a half door-knocking, cold-calling, and doing open houses every single weekend — many of which ended up being no-shows — before she made her first sale. Finally, right around the time she was starting to wonder what more she could possibly be doing, Kaajal started closing deals. Her determination and tireless efforts were paying off. She'd built up her local network, gained recognition in her area, and was set to keep building off of that momentum she'd been storing up. And then the market crashed…again. Creating Balance Knowing how and when we need to adapt in order to evolve is something Kaajal refers to as the “mastery of the business.” Even though the market continues to ebb and flow just like always, Kaajal's volume has still gone up year over year. She's adamant that the consistent growth would not be possible if it weren't for her routine and the “just roll with it” approach she's learned to take in the face of unpredictability. Kaajal encourages anyone who is navigating uncertainty, whether it's with their business or their personal life, to lean into it. Creating balance often means being willing to embrace change and adapt to challenges without allowing them to limit our success. In this week's episode of Art of Power, host Aarti Shahani sits down with Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-Mo.), a former Black Lives Matter activist who lost two elections before finally winning Missouri's 1st congressional seat in 2020. Bush tells Shahani about her early exposure to politics (12:36), the adversities she endured in her early life — including eviction, homelessness and rape (19:12), the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown Jr. in Ferguson that pushed her to seek public office (4:00), and why she didn't quit after two lopsided electoral defeats (32:45).
In this week's episode of Art of Power, host Aarti Shahani sits down with the woman who helped build Ukraine's fledgling democracy. Daria Kaleniuk is the executive director of Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Action Center. She has spent a decade building sweeping anti-corruption infrastructure, much to Russia's chagrin. As Vladimir Putin invades her home, you may have seen her calling out U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a recent press conference that went viral. In our conversation, Kaleniuk questions the value of her life's work: “We are being executed by Russia for fighting corruption and building rule of law,” she tells Shahani. “Those allies which helped us…are betraying us. They are not providing means to protect our democracy.” To understand the war in Ukraine, you need to understand her story: where she grew up, the uprising that shaped her, and the threat that she poses to Vladimir Putin. We discuss her early childhood in the post–Soviet state (1:43), her protest work during the Maidan Revolution (7:00), Putin's recent speech that cited the organizations she helped create as a pretext for his invasion (27:37), and her call to action for Western governments (32:02). Editor's note: This interview was recorded on Monday, March 7, 2022. It provides vital context for understanding Russia's attack on Ukraine, but does not reflect the latest developments on the ground.

Pink Revolutions: Globalization, Hindutva, and Queer Triangles in Contemporary India (Northwestern UP, 2021) describes how queer politics in India occupies an uneasy position between the forces of neoliberal globalization, on the one hand, and the nationalist Hindu fundamentalism that has emerged since the 1990s, on the other. While neoliberal forces use queerness to highlight India's democratic credentials and stature within a globalized world, nationalist voices claim that queer movements in the country pose a threat to Indian national identity. Nishant Shahani argues that this tension implicates queer politics within messy entanglements and knotted ideological triangulations, geometries of power in which local understandings of “authentic” nationalism brush up against global agendas of multinational capital. Eschewing structures of absolute complicity or abject alterity, Pink Revolutions pays attention to the logics of triangulation in various contexts: gay tourism, university campus politics, diasporic cultural productions, and AIDS activism. The book articulates a framework through which queer politics can challenge rather than participate in neoliberal imperatives, an approach that will interest scholars engaged with queer studies and postcolonial scholarship, as well as activists and academics wrestling with global capitalism and right-wing regimes around the world.
