Foreign accent syndrome isn't when your mom talks funny when she goes abroad. It's an actual condition where people wake up one day with an entirely different accent, usually from some kind of head trauma. Learn all about this decidedly rare affliction in this classic episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The idea might seem like something out of a fantasy, but “Foreign Accent Syndrome” is a genuine, albeit very rare, neurological condition! It sees a person begin to speak with an accent different to the one they had prior to having a stroke; one which makes them sound like they come from an entirely different country! Since the first case was discovered in France in 1907, there have only been about 100 documented cases worldwide, according to the Cleveland Clinic. But certain cases have attracted the attention of the media and scientific researchers alike. One dates back to 1941 in Oslo, Norway, during a period of German occupation. What is the foreign accent syndrom? What exactly happens in the brain in such cases? How serious can the syndrome be? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Handi: Hey, creative habiters! Welcome back to another episode of our podcast. I'm your host, Handi. Phil: And I'm Phil. And we're super excited to have you guys here with us today. Handi: Imagine you wake up and how you pronounce words suddenly sounds completely different, almost foreign, from the last time you spoke. For example, your American English accent sounds African. This might seem bizarre, but it's a rare motor speech disorder aptly called foreign accent syndrome, Today's episode is going to be all about Foreign accent Syndrome – something that many people might not be familiar with. Phil: Yeah, it's a really interesting topic, and it can be helpful for those who are trying to learn a new language. Handi: For those of you who don't know, Foreign accent Syndrome is a rare condition that occurs after a person suffers a brain injury or illness, and can cause them to speak in a foreign accent or language. Phil: It's actually quite surprising – these people can suddenly start talking as if they're speaking an entirely different language, even though they've never actually studied or spoken it before. Handi: Right, and while it's rare, it's a really fascinating phenomenon that has been studied and documented in scientific literature and research. Phil: In fact, there have been several cases of people who have developed Foreign accent Syndrome, and some of the most notable ones made headlines all over the world. Handi: Yes, like the case of an American woman who suffered a head injury and woke up with an Irish accent. Or the man who had a stroke and began speaking fluent Mandarin – even though he had only learned the basic phrases. Phil: So, what causes this syndrome? Studies have shown that when parts of the brain that are involved in language are damaged, it can cause the brain to reorganize itself and adapt to new forms of communication. Handi: It's also been suggested that this is due to the brain's sensory regions being rewired after an injury or illness – leading to a completely different way of processing language. Phil: While rare, Foreign accent Syndrome is a real condition, and it's important to understand that it's not something that can be controlled. But it does raise some interesting questions about how the brain processes language, and how this might open up new avenues for language learning in the future. Handi: Absolutely. In fact, there's been some recent research that suggests that even without a brain injury, people can still develop traits of Foreign accent Syndrome when learning a new language. Phil: In a study done by scientists from the University of Chicago, it was shown that people who are fluent in two languages sometimes exhibit distinct cognitive and behavioral characteristics depending on which language they're speaking. Handi: That's really interesting. It suggests that when you learn a new language, you're not just learning a new way to communicate, but you're also potentially rewiring your brain to process information in a new way. Phil: Which is another reason why learning a new language is such a valuable skill – it can help you think in new ways, and see the world from a different perspective. Handi: Yes, and it's something that everyone should try at least once in their life. Phil: Absolutely. Well, we hope you guys found this episode informative and fascinating. If you want to learn more about Foreign Language Syndrome, we've included some links to articles and research in the show notes. Handi: And as always, please feel free to reach out to us on social media with any questions or comments. We're kicking March off (or as we like to call it, Fool's Spring) with a story about testicles--yay!!! It turns out men with bigger balls are crappier dads. We debate whether this is a product of low testosterone or some other physical issue or whether it's a societal construct where men with bigger balls just don't think they should or want to be active parents. Either way, we're mad. Susie describes Foreign Accent Syndrome, where after a person has an injury, disease, or traumatic experience they suddently start talking with an accent from a country from which they do not hail. It's one of her favorite maladies, but we find out why it causes more problems than you'd think in terms of relationships. We hear about a reported dead body in a lake that turned out to be a sex doll, and we were having a grand old time until we learned more details about the "body" that are MAJOR red flags. Scientists are puzzled by a recent study that found the average erect penis length has increased by 24 percent worldwide over the last few decades. The researchers speculate that global environmental causes, including a sedentary lifestyle and exposure to hormone-disrupting substances, could be contributing to the increase. A man in his 50s diagnosed with prostate cancer developed an "uncontrollable 'Irish accent" despite not having one before, according to a report by researchers from Duke University and Carolina Urologic Research Center. The researchers suspect that the man's case is a rare instance of Foreign Accent Syndrome, which basically means that your speech changes in a way that makes it sound like you have a foreign accent. And in this case, it was the luck of the Irish. Apparently, the CDC has tied the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears to a multi-state cluster of Pseudomonas aeruginosa patients. The CDC is investigating at least 50 cases in 11 states that have led to hospitalization, permanent vision loss, and even one death. Yikes. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways The human brain is shaped differently depending on sounds you are exposed to in utero and throughout the first years of brain developmentIt's probably best to skip the white noise machine to help your babies sleep – our brain is structured to hear environmental noises; constant white noise exposure may lead to delaysWhether you are right-handed or left-handed is strongly genetically determinedThe earlier, more intense, and longer you can have exposure to a second language – the better; human interaction allows for greater specialization of the languageMemory is widely distributed across the brain which is good because even in the event of head injury or illness requiring surgery, memory is generally preservedNew technologies are being studied to give paralyzed and nonverbal patients a chance to communicate again through the use of electrodes connected from the brain to a computer which uses AI to translateRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgMy guest is Eddie Chang, MD, a neurosurgeon and professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the co-director of the Center for Neural Engineering & Prostheses. We discuss the brain mechanisms underlying speech, language learning and comprehension, communicating human emotion with words and hand gestures, bilingualism and language disorders, such as stuttering. Dr. Chang also explains his work developing and applying state-of-the-art technology to decode speech and using that information and artificial intelligence (AI) to successfully restore communication to patients who have suffered paralyzing injuries or “locked in syndrome.” We also discuss his work treating patients with epilepsy. My guest is Eddie Chang, MD, a neurosurgeon and professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the co-director of the Center for Neural Engineering & Prostheses. This week Laura tells about the wild phenomenon called Foreign Accent Syndrome. The result of a brain injury, but still not entirely understood, this condition is kinda scary. Sit with us to kick your week off right and truly weird!
On today's show we sit down with Dr. Lindsay Weisner to talk about all things brain and answer the questions you've always wondered. Do we really only use 10% of our brains? When do men's brain neurons actually connect? 10? 20? 30? Ever? What are some wild but true neurological anomalies she's come across in her career? How many bitchy PTA parents are typically in a PTA group? How many times can a clinical psychologist swear tastefully? These questions and more... About the Guest Lindsay Weisner is a Clinical Psychologist in Long Island, New York specializing in suicidal teens and their family, as well as helping people work through their anxiety. She graduated from Georgetown University in 1999 and was awarded a fellowship in child development at the NIH/NICHD. She received her doctorate from C.W. Post, LIU, and went on to pursue post-doctorate training at the American Institute of Psychoanalysis. Dr. Weisner is an expert blogger for Psychology Today, The Venn Diagram Life: Where Sense and Science meet and the co-author of the book Ten Steps To Finding Happy, which ironically was released during the first week of quarantine with the support and endorsement of the United Nation's International Day of Happiness. In addition, Dr. Weisner is the host of the Neurotic Nourishment Podcast, and the co-host of the Crimes of Long Island Podcast, both of which can be found on all podcast platforms. A condition which changes a person's speech, sounding like a foreign accent. It's generally caused by damage to the brain (a stroke or traumatic brain injury).
Foreign accent syndrome is a syndrome that occurs typically caused by stroke or brain injury that causes the individual to speak as though they have an accent from a different region or country. Interestingly, this syndrome is entirely subjective, as it is the listener who interprets the speech changes as a different accent. TINDER ACCENTS: The Tinder Swindler, foreign-accent syndrome, soul swaps, past lives & more Do you think you could spot a Tinder fake? Would you fall for a pretend billionaire? Most of us think we're smart enough to spot a conman, but when it comes to matters of the heart, it seems women throw commonsense to the wind in the name of romance… Which brings us to the topic of this week's episode: The Tinder Swindler! Yes, everyone's talking about Simon Leviev and how he conned loads of women out of millions of dollars - but how did this creep get away with it? Who is he really? Why are we saying Shimone mother f*cker in the ep? Would a billionaire really be on Tinder? And do all our single Eavesdroppers still need their dating wits about them to avoid this MoFo? Listen in to find out! Geordie then goes on to talk about the bizarre condition known as Foreign Accent Syndrome where one day you just start speaking like someone else… She recounts the stories of women who after illness or medication suddenly speak in accents they don't recognize – it's a heartbreaking condition and truly mind-boggling! Plus you'll hear Geordie miss-sing the lyrics to Careless Whisper in a West Country accent

We're back with Katy reporting in from the surface of the sun (...or Seattle in a historic heat cone) with some strange medical mysteries. If you are a hypochondriac... be warned, these maladies are wild and only provide more evidence that the brain is a terrifying place. Learn about aquagenic urticaria, or being ALLERGIC TO WATER, and a mystery brain disease striking in New Brunswick, Canada. Spoiler alert, neither of us are doctors, so please don't take any of this as medically perfect. Katy just researched online, okay? Everything sounds like an episode of House. There are some bonus mysteries discussed, like chimeric people, Foreign Accent Syndrome, and whatever the fuck possessed people to eat rotten meat as a health trend.
