The Experience Mindset: Changing the Way You Think About Growth by Tiffani Bova About the Book: From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Growth IQ comes a guide to enhancing customer and employee experience simultaneously for unprecedented revenue growth. In the war for customer acquisition, businesses invest millions of dollars to improve customer experience. They deliver packages faster, churn out new products, and endlessly revamp their UI, often putting greater strain on employees for diminishing returns. According to Tiffani Bova, this siloed focus on customer experience – without considering the impact on your staff – actually hinders growth in the long run. The most successful companies adopt an Experience Mindset that strengthens both employee experience (EX) and customer experience (CX) at the same time. Based on exclusive research from two Salesforce-sponsored studies of thousands of employees and C-suite executives, The Experience Mindset details exactly how your company can adopt an Experience Mindset, at scale. It's not enough to know that happy employees equals happy customers. You must have an intentional, balanced approach to company strategy that involves all stakeholders – IT, Marketing, Sales, Operations, and HR – with KPIs and ownership over outcomes. In this ground-breaking book, filled with case studies of leading companies and never-before-seen research, you'll learn: How people, processes, technology, and culture contribute to the “virtuous cycle” of EX and CX. Why the best companies have programs that minimize the customer's effort as well as the employee's effort (and how companies like Southwest and Best Buy get this right) How to effectively roll out technology solutions that boost both EX and CX (hard truth: only 20% of customer-facing employees believe technology makes their job easier. Employees want a seamless technology experience, just like your customers.) What metrics you can use to measure EX, CX, and ultimately, the effect of the two together? You can't improve what you can't measure. Employees are the heart of your business. If you want to remain competitive in today's marketplace, investing in people is no longer a nice-to-have, but rather a must-have. About the Author: Tiffani Bova is the global growth evangelist at Salesforce, a bestselling author, a highly sought-after international keynote speaker, and a podcaster. Tiffani is ranked on the current Thinkers50 list of the world's top management thinkers and has appeared on MSNBC, Bloomberg, and Yahoo! Finance, and is a contributor to publications including Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and Entrepreneur. As host of the podcast, What's Next! With Tiffani Bova, she interviews really smart people [including several authors whom I've had the honor of interviewing] about what's next for companies and individuals as they look to innovate and grow. Prior to working with Salesforce, she was a sales, marketing, and customer service executive for startups and Fortune 500 companies. She also spent ten years at Gartner, the world's leading IT research and advisory firm, as a distinguished analyst and research fellow where she helped companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Oracle, SAP, AT&T, Dell, and Amazon Web Services to expand their market share and grow their revenues. And, interesting fact – she grew up in Hawaii and she and President Obama attended the same high school! Download a year’s worth of https://www.leadershipactionlist.com/ (weekly action steps to improve your leadership) for FREE! Dr. Vince Molinaro is a global leadership adviser, speaker, and researcher on leadership accountability. As founder and CEO of Leadership Contract Inc., Vince travels the world helping organizations build vibrant leadership cultures with truly accountable leaders at every level. His unique combination of provocative storytelling, evidence-based principles and grounded practicality has leaders at all levels stepping up to fulfill their obligations to drive the success of their organizations. His newest book, Accountable Leaders: Inspire a Culture Where Everyone Steps Up, Takes Ownership, and Delivers Results, is available now. LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS When you stumble on a problem, you begin seeing it everywhere. There’s always an implicit contract that leaders sign when they take a role, but a lot of leaders don’t realize this. Leaders are held to a higher standard of behavior – to be better than everyone else. Four terms and conditions to be an accountable leader: 1. A decision whether you have what it takes, 2. Accepting the obligations for serving others, 3. The courage and resolve to tackle the hard things, and 4. Building community by building and aligning leadership culture. Leaders not only need to hold themselves accountable (the foundation) but to extend that to the organization. Only 20% of leaders believe they have the courage to identify, address, and support leaders who are deemed mediocre. They know who they are but not how to help them. The quickest and most enduring way to become a better leader is to focus on accountability. Five things help to identify a mediocre leader: 1. They blame others, 2. They lack initiative, 3. They mistreat others, 4. They are perceived as inept, and 5. They are always hiding and not stepping up. You have to be relentless in addressing mediocrity. Accountable leaders show five behaviors: 1. They hold everyone (including themselves) to high standards, 2. They have the courage to tackle tough issues, 3. They are very good at communicating the strategy of the organization, 4. They are really excited about the company and its future, and 5. They look outside their own business to anticipate trends. The difference in employee engagement between people who see their leaders working well together vs. not working well together is a difference between 72% and 8%. QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Seeing from a friend that toxic management can literally be detrimental to our health. Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Accountable, accountable, accountable What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? Who needs you the most right now? What book would you recommend to leaders? The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't by Jim Collins, and Growth IQ: Get Smarter About the Choices that Will Make Or Break Your Business by Tiffani Bova If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? What is the tough thing that I’m avoiding? As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why not?” because there’s a boldness to it and an opportunity to provoke people’s thinking. Hi – this is Julie Masters and you’re listening to The Next Right Thing – a mini-series from The Inside Influence Team. Designed to provide some actionable certainty in uncertain times. Specifically – and the situation we’re all facing right now – the ‘messy middle’ of the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea behind this series is to go out to some of the most popular guests from past episodes of Inside Influence – and ask them one question: ‘What are the most important things you are focusing on right now (tools, ideas, strategies) - or advising your clients to focus on - that you know for sure work in uncertain times?’The intention being that somewhere in there, from these incredible minds, you might be able to find inspiration for your next right thing – or to put it another way - a point of certainty amidst the uncertainty. In this episode I speak with… Tiffani Bova. Global customer growth and innovation evangelist at Salesforce AND Wall Street Journal bestselling author of – ‘Growth IQ - Get Smarter About the Choices that Will Make Or Break Your Business’. What impresses me most about Tiffani isn’t her credentials – which are extensive – or her laser focused approach to solving the growth challenges of some of the world’s top tier firms. What has always impressed me during the few times we have been able to spend some time together - is her ability to peer into the clutter – into the never-ending predictions, statistics and trends – especially at times like right now - and translate them with a level of certainty, clarity (and perspective) that only comes from having done the work.In todays conversation we talk about… Stabilised decision making – and why’s it’s vital during any crisis. The Growth Zone – what it is – what it looks like – and how we will know when we’re there. Which consumer habits are temporary and which are now here for good. And the one that hit me the hardest – the idea of ‘Jobs to be done’ and how it needs to be the guiding light for whatever you do next. What I want you to reflect on here… isn’t actually related to growth – but more related to influence. Tiffani has one of the most finely attuned ‘question radars’ that I have ever come across. Her success as an analyst, author, influencer and leader is in my opinion down to one thing – she listens hard to the questions of her target market, and makes it her absolute mission to answer them. There. That’s it. That alone is an insanely powerful next right thing. If you want to dig even further into Tiffani’s insanely smart mind and Growth IQ as a set of tools and strategies… you can also hunt down our previous conversation - which I believe is episode No. 42. You can also find her book on Amazon – highly, highly recommended. I’ve said it before and I’ll say I again - this series very much a ‘by the seat of your pants’ kind of thing… lockdown means we’ve had to work with what we have in terms of equipment and internet speeds. So sound quality isn’t always perfect. But – as I’m learning to embrace - that’s not the point. The point is that we’re showing up – with intent that somewhere in here – imperfections and all - you will find the fuel you need for your next right thing. So… other than staying well and looking after each other - I hope somewhere in here you find the fuel you need for your next right thing. If not, it's time to boost your Growth IQ. Trying to find the one right move that will improve your business's performance can feel overwhelming. But, as you'll discover in Growth IQ, there are just ten simple--but easily misunderstood--paths to growth, and every successful growth strategy can be boiled down to picking the right combination and sequence of these paths for your current context. Tiffani Bova travels around the world helping companies solve their most vexing problem: how to keep growing in the face of stiff competition and a fast-changing business environment. Whether she's presenting to a Fortune 500 board of directors or brainstorming over coffee with a startup founder, Bova cuts through the clutter and confusion that surround growth. Now, she draws on her decades of experience and more than thirty fascinating, in-depth business stories to demonstrate the opportunities--and pitfalls--of each of the ten growth paths, how they work together, and how they apply to business today. You'll see how, for instance: * Red Bull broke Coca-Cola and PepsiCo's stranglehold on the soft drink market by taking the Customer Base Penetration path to establish a foothold with adventure sports junkies and expand into the mainstream. * Marvel transformed itself from a struggling comic book publisher into a global entertainment behemoth by using a Customer and Product Diversification strategy and shifting their focus from comic books to comic book characters in movies. * Starbucks suffered a brand crisis when they overwhelmed their customers with a Product Expansion strategy, and brought back CEO Howard Schultz to course-correct by returning to the Customer Experience path. Through Bova's insightful analyses of these and many other case studies, you'll see why it can be a mistake to imitate strategies that worked for your competitors, or rely on strategies that worked for you in the past. To grow your company with confidence, you first need to grow your Growth IQ.

Without leaders who are actively growing themselves, sales teams don’t have a chance of succeeding. I can think of nobody better to speak to the topic of personal growth than Tiffani Bova, my guest on this episode of #SellingWithSocial. Tiffani is the growth and innovation evangelist at Salesforce and the author of my new favorite book, “GROWTH IQ: Get Smarter About the Choices that Will Make or Break Your Business”. It’s a phenomenal book that highlights the 10 simple but often misunderstood paths to growth. Tiffani’s experience in customer experience, digital transformation, and sales, combined with her research into the future of work make her an ideal person to teach us how the ongoing growth of the sales leader will exponentially impact the teams they lead. The Most Difficult Aspect Of A Sales Leader’s Job: The Seller’s Dilemma Tiffani has coined the phrase “The Seller’s Dilemma” to point out a delicate balance that all salespeople and sales leaders must strike. Here’s how she describes it... Every sales professional must be growing personally in order to keep up with the changes and needs within their industry. But they also need to be able to consistently close deals. Both require intense focus and significant amounts of time, so the tension between them can be quite a dilemma. Stated as a question: “How do I hit my numbers today, this week, this month, and this quarter, and at the same time invest the time necessary to transform through personal growth?” Tiffani readily admits it’s not an easy problem to solve, but insists it is one that must be solved. For sales leaders, in particular, her belief is that if you can improve the people and process side of the business the entire boat rises. Listen to hear a number of examples of how it can be done, on this episode. Achieving Quota Is Not A Tech Problem, It’s A Sales Leadership Problem As a sales leader, if you are running your forecasting or pipeline review meetings the same way you did 3 to 5 years ago, you’re wasting your time. Technology makes it possible for you to know about the deals your team is working on without having to take up their precious time with a pointless meeting. The reality is that 63% of a modern sales rep’s time is consumed with things that are non-selling related. Your job as a leader is to help your team get past those things - and you do it by spending your time coaching, mentoring, and equipping your team. Tiffani says if you are thinking about getting into sales leadership but are not interested in coaching, development, and the process side of how deals happen, then you should remain in sales and not become a leader. When you become a sales leader, you have to be willing to change your behaviors, grow your leadership skills, and do what it takes to make your team more successful. Struggling To Get Your Sales Team To Use Your Tech Stack? Most salespeople understand the need for keeping accurate records via their CRM. They know that doing so has the potential of helping them close more deals. But they still tend to lag behind in getting their data entered in a timely fashion. Why? Tiffani says it’s because many sales leaders use their CRM to hold their team’s feet to the fire rather than as a tool to make them more successful. She suggests that sales leaders teach their teams how to leverage the technology in a way that they can trust, knowing that their use of it will enable them to become more effective sellers. Listen to hear how Tiffani recommends sales leaders use their CRM to keep themselves informed about the strengths and weaknesses of their team members - and how that information can be used to hone in on areas where training and coaching are needed. Sales Leaders: Knowing Your Sales Team Helps You Help Them If you’re a sales leader who’s committed to the kind of personal growth that will equip your team for greater success, you’re exactly the person Tiffani is speaking to on this episode. Her belief is that the better you get at knowing and supporting your sales team, the better they will become at sales. Take note of the areas where each member of your team excels and get them additional training in those areas to hone their skills and improve their effectiveness. Pay attention to the things they struggle with and come up with ways to support them with resources and education. A good sales leader is focused on the people side of the organization just as much as they are the numbers. As the people on their team grow, sales conversions follow suit. Tiffani’s book is a resource you won’t want to do without if you are responsible for leading a sales team. Her insights are the kind you can understand easily and begin to apply right away. Listen in as Matt Heinz talks to Tiffani Bova, Global, Customer Growth and Innovation Evangelist at SalesForce . You can follow her @Tiffani_Bova Check out the full transcription on the Heinz Marketing Blog starting Monday January 21st. Tiffani is the author of the recently published book, Growth IQ: Get Smarter About the Choices that Will Make or Break Your Business. She discussed with Matt the reasons behind the book and why she wrote it. This is a Wall Street Journal Best Seller. She said that the number one thing CEOs and executives are focused on is growth. Bova found the Growth IQ is how we get smarter about the decisions we make. What she would consistently see and hear were, we're having softness in our sales numbers or we're finding it more difficult to grow than we have in the past, and it would tend to pull the same levers. “Spend more marketing dollars, hire more sales people or cut costs, and that just couldn't be sustainable over time because we now have so much more data as we were just talking about the CRM systems and technologies is far advanced is where it was five or even 10 years ago.” There were patterns, Bovi said, that she was hearing in high performance organizations and it she found she could sort these into specific patterns and she outlined 10 in the book. She and Matt talked about what she learned about the combination and sequences of a growth pattern and the importance of implementation. Our advice? listen to Tiffani Bova’s Podcast. Buy the book.

Tiffani Bova is author of “Growth IQ: Get Smarter About the Choices that Will Make or Break Your Business.” She has a unique background, with 20 years of experience spread between start-ups and fortune 500 companies. Tiffani has put together a first hand look at what it takes to start and run a successful business as an entrepreneur. How did Tiffani get her start in business? Early in her career she would ask executives and CEO’s constantly for little tid-bits of knowledge–she wasn’t afraid to step out of her comfort zone and ask for help. That feedback and confidence building was the cornerstone to becoming who she is today. What gave Tiffani the courage to talk to these leaders and say “please help and give me some advice?” Sports played a huge role. Win or lose, she learned how to conduct herself and hold her head high no mater what the turnout of a game was. Growth IQ is a dense book with many case studies. Tiffani researched about 30 companies from all backgrounds including Kylie Cosmetics, Honest Co., and Under Armor–using them as examples to show how to build and sustain successful businesses. Tiffani stresses that it is sometimes the little changes made that make all the difference between a failed venture or a successful one. Growing a business takes more than setting a plan and following it. Plans need to be monitored and analyzed to slow or eliminate becoming stagnate. You need to be ahead of where your business and clients are going to anticipate the next phase of growth. You don't want to be behind the curve and have to react to a downturn or slowdown. It is much harder to recover when you are reacting to something that has already happened. Wouldn't it be better if you could see the writing on the wall and possibly avoid it all together? Or better yet, create new markets or plumb the depths of your existing client base to exponentially grow your current market? My guest today has been helping businesses anticipate trends, grow their client base and understand their business through metrics every business owner or executive MUST to survive in these turbulent times for over twenty years. And now she has finally written a book to share the wisdom she has gained from helping others. On this episode Tiffani Bova shares the ten paths to growth and how you can combine and sequence them to keep your business moving forward and up. Tiffani likes to say that she is a recovering seller, because while she no longer carries a sales quota she still “bleeds sales blood.” Growing up on the islands of Hawaii, Tiffani early on had a mentor who showed her the ropes of business beyond learning about supply chains and P&L. One lesson became deeply embedded in her mind—experience is king. For links from this episode and further takeaways, visit https://whitneyjohnson.com/tiffani-bova
