Now I've heard of a Major Motion Picture...but a Mayor Motion Picture??? Now I'm being carted off to a hospital for having typed that!! Nah, just kidding. We're talking about one of those today: Harold Becker's 1996 not-John-Grisham city politics thriller CITY HALL, on which Paul Schrader was one of four credited writers! Your favorite Pauld Casty boys had a grand old time talking municipal procedure, Al Pacino, Danny Aiello, Donald Manes, David Dinkins, Rudy Giuliani, bongo clubs, and more. Plus, obviously: impressions. Further Reading: Fear City: New York's Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of Austerity Politics by Kim Phillips-Fein "Rudy Giuliani Has Been Peddling Racist Political Tropes for More Than 3 Decades" by John Nichols "White Riot: In 1992, thousands of furious, drunken cops descended on City Hall — and changed New York history" by Laura Nahmias Further Viewing: CITY HALL (Wiseman, 2020) SEA OF LOVE (Becker, 1989) THE FIRM (Pollack, 1993), etc.   https://www.podcastyforme.com/ Follow Pod Casty For Me: https://twitter.com/podcastyforme https://www.instagram.com/podcastyforme/ https://www.youtube.com/@podcastyforme Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/PodCastyForMe Artwork by Jeremy Allison: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyallisonart

At 18 years old, Cruise made a pivotal decision with his mother and stepfather's support to relocate to New York City, embarking on a journey to pursue an acting career. After a stint as a busboy in the city, he ventured to Los Angeles in pursuit of television opportunities. Securing representation with CAA, Cruise transitioned into the film industry, marking his debut with a minor role in the 1981 film "Endless Love" before landing a significant supporting part as a volatile cadet in "Taps" later that year. Initially cast as a background actor, Cruise's standout performance impressed director Harold Becker, resulting in an expanded role.In 1983, Cruise joined the ensemble cast of Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders," followed by notable roles in "All the Right Moves" and the seminal "Risky Business," lauded as a quintessential "Generation X classic" and a pivotal moment in Cruise's burgeoning career. Additionally, Cruise headlined Ridley Scott's "Legend" in 1985. By the release of "Top Gun" in 1986, Cruise had solidified his status as a Hollywood superstar.Cruise continued his success with Martin Scorsese's "The Color of Money" the same year, sharing the screen with Paul Newman and earning acclaim for their on-screen chemistry. Despite the critical reception of "Cocktail" in 1988, Cruise rebounded with a powerful performance in Barry Levinson's "Rain Man," opposite Dustin Hoffman, which earned him accolades and recognition. In 1989, Cruise tackled the challenging role of paralyzed Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic in Oliver Stone's "Born on the Fourth of July." His transformative portrayal earned him numerous awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe Award and his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. You'll also notice a beardless Richard Schiff, Lauren Velez, and Senator Fritz Hollings of South Carolina. February is Sports Movie Month at Catching Up On Cinema! This month we'll reviewing films that center around some of our favorite sports. First up, Kyle introduces Trevor to the sport of wrestling via Harold Becker's Vision Quest (1985)! Starring a young Matt Modine as standout varsity wrestler (from Spokane, WA!) Louden Swain, the film is a coming of age tale based on a novel by the same name. While the story is more precisely centered on the development and human drama of a young man during a pivotal moment in his life, the film is nevertheless a very effective sports drama, with much of the wrestling training and choreography having a grit and roughness to it that is rare in film, especially at the time of it's release.

"If you run, the beast catches you; if you stay, the beast eats you." Fifteen miles from paradise lies the City of God and it is divided. Anyone living in the Rio de Janeiro slum is considered a hoodlum and life is violent and cheap. In this podcast based on a true story your hosts, Mike and Dustin, infiltrate a gang war between two rival crime lords to record a podcast and tell a story the world needs to hear. Will the 2002 critically acclaimed crime-drama, City of God, cut the classic mustard? Check out the show and let us know what you thought of the final verdict.   MUSIC Kung-Fu Fighting (Carl Douglas) Metamorfose Ambulante (Raul Seixas)   LINKS/NOTES City Of God page on Wikipedia Official City Of God website (English) Sea Of Love (1989 film directed by Harold Becker & written by Richard Price) Goodfellas (1990 film directed by Martin Scorsese & written by Nicholas Pileggi and Martin Scorsese)

May 1st is Global Love day , Come celebrate it with us ! It is our vision to unite one and all in a celebration of love and compassion. We honor each May 1st as a symbolic day of unconditional love and call upon all people and all nations to gather together in the wisdom of peace and love. Global Love Day is the universal recognition of our innate oneness through love. When we come from this limitless love we naturally and easily embrace ourselves and our fellow humanity. Opening our heart, we allow unconditional love to be our guide and compassion to be our gift to life. We invite you to celebrate with us by consciously focusing on love and what it means to you throughout this day. We hope that by practicing love in all areas of your life, you will find it easy to love unconditionally all year long. Our main theme explains it best... "Love Begins With Me"  Simply be love. Let the love within your heart be the focus of your awareness throughout the day. Allow yourself to be accepting, forgiving, peaceful, joyful and in harmony with yourself and all life around you. Just be! Catching on around the world, we launched this program in December 2003 for our first celebration on May 1, 2004 and already we have connected with people in over 145 countries. We hear daily from so many of you supporting our efforts for this event. You have shown us that this simple idea is one whose time has come. Plans for our ninth celebration of humanity are underway for May 1, 2012!
