The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is officially underway, and no film was more highly anticipated than Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis. To get the very latest, I connected with Eric Hynes, curator of film at the Museum of the Moving Image, fresh from a press screening of the movie, which has loomed over Cannes' opening days this year. He shared his initial thoughts about Megalopolis, which stars Adam Driver as a would-be visionary city planner, and about another competition title, The Girl with the Needle (Magnus von Horn), and a Cannes Classics selection, Abel Gance's Napoleon.

For our discussion of Ridley Scott's new historical epic, Napoleon, we have the privilege of being joined by Paul Cuff, a film historian and expert on the Napoleonic era in cinema, including and especially Abel Gance's Napoléon from 1927, about which he wrote A Revolution for the Screen: Abel Gance's Napoleon. Together, we ask whether Scott's film has anything to say about the man whose life it depicts - and if so what? - whether its ahistoricity matters, and how substantially it fleshes out its characters and the events and relationships dramatised. Recorded on 26th November 2023.

Since we started Criteria: The Catholic Film Podcast in May 2020, we've been hosting in-depth discussions of movies from the Vatican's 1995 list of important films. Now, after three years, we've finished discussing all 45 films - and in this episode, together with Catholic filmmaker Nathan Douglas, we're taking a look back at the list as a whole. After discussing how and why the Vatican film list (actually titled "Some Important Films") was made, and putting it in the context of several decades of concern from the highest levels of the Vatican about the social and moral influence of cinema, we talk about our favorite and least favorite films on the Vatican's list, as well as the movies we think should be added in a hypothetical future update of the list. Ultimately, watching through the entire Vatican film list is not only an education in the classics of world cinema, but also gives  important perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of past cinematic engagement with religion, allowing us to see both the potential fruit that could be borne and the dead ends that should be avoided in the Catholic cinema of the future. 0:00 Introduction 11:31 History behind the Vatican film list 43:34 What films should be removed from the list? 1:24:10 Our favorite films on the list 1:55:30 What films should have been included that weren't? 2:34:09 What post-1995 films would we add? 3:00:19 The most Catholic/edifying films on the list Links Pope St. John Paul II's address on the 100th birthday of cinema https://www.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/speeches/1995/march/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_19950317_plen-pccs.html "100 Years of Cinema" document from the Pontifical Council of Social Communications with model curriculum https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/pccs/documents/rc_pc_pccs_doc_19960101_100-cinema_en.html Below is the 1995 list by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, "Some Important Films" (with links to our episode on each film): Religion Andrei Rublev, Andrei Tarkovsky (1969, USSR) The Mission, Roland Joffé (1986, UK) The Passion of Joan of Arc, Carl T. On this extra-long episode we present our Creaky Chair guide to the historical epic. We decided that 'historical' meant anything pre-20th century and had to have some basis in historical fact. Sam went for Abel Gance's 1927 silent classic 'Napoléon' (which, clocking in at some 5 hours, is the most epic of our choices in terms of length), as well as 'Ran' (1985), Akira Kurosawa's loose adaptation of 'King Lear' set in the time of warring Japanese feudal dynasties. Bill opted for sword-and-sandals Roman epics 'Ben-Hur' (1959) starring Charlton Heston, and Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' (2000) starring Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed. Michael chose Andrei Tarkovsky's 1966 masterpiece 'Andrei Rublev' about the Russian icon painter, and Mel Gibson's divisive 'Braveheart' (1995) about the Scottish folk hero William Wallace. Before all the historical epics chat, we also find time to discuss the shock recent news about Warner Bros' decision to scrap 'Batgirl' entirely, and ponder what the implications for the film industry might be.

Since the beginning of film as a narrative and artistic medium, historical events and eras have been popular subjects for filmmakers. The decade of the 1810s, however, has not tended to show up in movies or on TV as frequently or consistently as other eras—but there are still plenty of examples of the second decade on film. Beginning in the 1920s with French filmmaker Abel Gance, depictions of the 1810s, many involving Napoleon or adaptations of popular and classic novels, have woven their way through the history of visual media with varying results. From Miriam Hopkins’s Technicolor turn as Becky Sharp in 1935 to Paul Dano as Pierre Bezhukov in the 2016 miniseries War and Peace, the analysis of the second decade in film covers a lot of fun and interesting ground. In this episode, a slight departure from the usual emphasis on factual events, historian Sean Munger takes you on a brief tour of the 1810s as they appear on the screen. Films and shows discussed include Ridley Scott’s The Duellists, the 2002 European-made Napoleon miniseries, the classic 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, as well as lesser-known (and less historically serious) efforts like Woody Allen’s Love and Death or the whimsical sendup Lost in Austen. If you’re a fan of the period and you’d like to see it on screen, this episode may give you some new items to add to your Netflix list! This week, we review Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi head-scratcher Arrival, in which humanity is thrown into a tizzy by the sudden appearance of twelve massive, featureless grey shells with aliens inside them. The film acts as a timely plea for global cooperation, although in light of recent events we spent most of it wishing the shells would spray some kind of deadly virus into our atmosphere and put us all out of our misery. Meanwhile, Danny recalls a time of classier would-be tyrants as he reviews Abel Gance's 1927 silent epic Napoleon. It charts the rise of a charismatic man of the people with an unwavering commitment to the revolution, all his own hair, and normal-sized hands over five and a half hours of pure utopian escapism. We also talk about Al Capone's nicknames, Michael Stipe's resemblance to a serial killer, Shia LaBeouf's rapping ability, and one of cinema's greatest elephant sex scenes. Historian Kevin Brownlow tells Francine Stock about his 50 year quest to restore Abel Gance's silent masterpiece Napoleon to its five and half hour glory, and why the search for missing scenes still continues even though the film is about to be released on DVD for the very first time. Composer Carl Davis takes us through his score, which borrows freely from the work of Beethoven, who dedicated his 3rd Symphony to Napoleon, only to regret it later.

In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll take a tour through some oddities and unanswered questions from our research, including whether a spider saved Frederick the Great's life, a statue with the wrong face, and a spectacularly disaster-prone oil tanker. We'll also revisit the lost soldiers of World War I and puzzle over some curiously lethal ship cargo. Please consider becoming a patron of Futility Closet -- on our Patreon page you can pledge any amount per episode, and all contributions are greatly appreciated. You can change or cancel your pledge at any time, and we've set up some rewards to help thank you for your support. You can also make a one-time donation via the Donate button in the sidebar of the Futility Closet website. Sources for this week's feature: The story about Frederick the Great is from Ebenezer Cobham Brewer's The Reader's Handbook of Famous Names in Fiction, Allusions, References, Proverbs, Plots, Stories, and Poems, 1899. The footnote about spiders and flashlights accompanies J.D. Memory's poem "The Eightfold Way, Lie Algebra, and Spider Hunting in the Dark" in Mathematics Magazine 79:1 (February 2006), 74. The case of the self-abnegating heir is cited as Beamish v. Beamish, 9 H.L.C. 274, 11 Eng. Rep. 735 (1861) in Peter Suber's 1990 book The Paradox of Self-Amendment. John Waterhouse's 1899 proof of the Pythagorean theorem appears in Elisha Scott Loomis' 1940 book The Pythagorean Proposition. My notes say it's also in Scientific American, volume 82, page 356. The story of the ill-starred oil tanker Argo Merchant is taken from Stephen Pile's 1979 Book of Heroic Failures. For an exceptionally well-reported history of the ship, see Ron Winslow's 1978 book Hard Aground. Physicist Leonard Mlodinow recounts the story of Antoine Lavoisier's statue in The Upright Thinkers (2015). A contemporary description of the unveiling is here, but it mentions nothing amiss. Ross Eckler addresses accidental acrostics in Making the Alphabet Dance, 1997. F.R. Benson's iambic ponging is mentioned in Jonathan Law, ed., Methuen Drama Dictionary of the Theatre, 2013. William Kendal's accomplished blanching is described in Eric Johns' Dames of the Theatre, 1975. In The Book of the Harp (2005), John Marson notes that Luigi Ferrari Trecate's Improvviso da Concerto (1947), for the left hand, is dedicated to harpist Aida Ferretti Orsini, described as grande mutilata di guerre. Mable LaRose's 1897 auction is recounted in Pierre Berton's The Klondike Fever, 2003, and Douglas Fetherling's The Gold Crusades, 1997. There's a conversation with Suzanne Lloyd, the Granddaughter of cinematic genius Harold Lloyd. Andy chats and chews with Canadian director Guy Maddin, and talks to pipe organ wizards Edward Stout and Clark Wilson. You'll hear live performances of the musical scores from some of the films at the Festival, just as they were intended to be performed back in the late 1920's when the silent film era was at its zenith. You'll also hear lots of laughter from the 2,000 people at the festival. Add in a couple of impromptu lobby discussions with other festival-goers, and you've got a great podcast episode! Enjoy!
