What is the primary driver of effective and impactful leadership? Is it from science—or the soul? Is it a more practical, results-driven organizational practice? Or is it an inner, meditative sense of self? This week's Finding Mastery guest, Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa, has spent his career exploring these questions… and his answer is, well, both.Hitendra fuses the mystical history of his Indian roots with the more results-oriented needs of Western business -- bridging the gap between spirituality and science, leadership and personal growth. It's a methodology that he teaches at Columbia Business School, the Mentora Institute (which he founded), on his podcast "Intersections" and in his book, Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. He's turned what he's found into powerful tools that any of us can use to be effective leaders and masters of our own lives.Hitendra's message for us is simple and clear: when you cultivate your inner self, wisdom shows up in the outer self. And that wisdom can be used to lead. Hitendra does it with an engaging sense of story, and telling examples from the lives of Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, and Steve Jobs.Today, we talk about cultivating inner awareness and outer engagement, unlocking human energy to lead, checking emotion before making decisions, finding meaning in every experience, and much, much more. This entire conversation was full of insights and I think you may just leave it thinking about success, leadership, and your relationship to it in a whole new way. With Fire,MG-----WATCH this episode on our YouTube channel.Connect with us on our Instagram.Order my book, "The First Rule of Mastery" HERE!For more information and shownotes from every episode, head to findingmastery.com.To check out our exclusive sponsor deals and discounts CLICK HERESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Tim and Pilar discuss an article featured in the Jan/Feb 2024 edition of the Harvard Business Review: "Leading in the Flow of Work" by Hitendra Wadhwa, Founder of the Mentora Institute. Hitendra posits that "rather than (being) a trait to be acquired, leadership is a state to be activated" through preparation, self awareness and reflection. By managing our internal state and matching our actions to the context, we will function better and more authentically as leaders. The article especially focusses on conversations and how leaders can get better outcomes by making conscious choices about what to do. It's an attractive premise, to be able to skilfully navigate the challenges of fluid interactions by pausing and then choosing, in the moment, an appropriate action for the situation. This model lists five core energies: Purpose (committed to a noble cause), Wisdom (calm and receptive to the truth), Growth (curious and open to learning), Love (connected with those you work with and serve) and Self-realisation (centered in a joyful spirit). This is supported by 25 actions which help activate these core energies. For our hosts this discussion is bittersweet. There is excitement at the prospect of making better decisions during important interactions. And there is also regret that our past selves didn't have the advantage of our current knowledge. Ironically of course it is that same regret which makes us the older and wiser person we are today... 0:30 mins Pilar appreciated several examples from the article of someone turning a potential confrontation into a better situation via the person shifting their approach. 2:30 Tim had previously associated flow states with sports - quite a different interpretation which is about acting without conscious thought or decision, just using instinct and muscle memory. But within the context of the article the flow state is where we are "calmly aware of our inner and outer conditions and able to adapt our behaviour as needed". Pilar describes this as a split personality between being present and reviewing what's going on. And being able to shift behaviour based on this conscious awareness. 5:25 We can all relate to the feeling of something not going the way we expected. When we unpack it afterwards we gain new insight and realise we should have acted differently. Alas, the moment has passed. Certainly both our hosts have experienced this many times! 6:25 The article shares a compelling example, from Jonathan Aitken's biography of Margaret Thatcher, about a pivotal meeting between Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev. At a crucial point Gorbachev was able to change his approach and in the process, change the course of history. He reminded himself of his intention coming into the meeting. He reframes his perception of how Thatcher is acting. And he finds alignment with her on principles. 8:20 Pilar shares that a realisation that has been transformational for her: that people are generally not acting with malice - they are trying to do what they believe is right. 8:50 We can practice and get better at understanding and acting within the moment itself. But it takes a lot of effort. And time. 10:50 Letting go of our everyday habits and ego can free us to choose the best way to act. It also requires the empathy of understanding what is happening for the other person. 12:15 Our hosts wrestle with the regrets that come with learning and evolving. But our experiences make us the person that we are today. 14:15 Leadership is not a static state: "The personality and behaviour of someone will change with the context that the person is in, the thoughts and feelings that individual is experiencing and who else is present". Pilar shares a story about how a change in context made a big difference in her performance. 17:00 This framework reminds us that our habitual behaviours aren't always going to work. If we are able to be aware and present in the moment, we have a better chance of navigating the situation. 19:40 Often conflict comes even though everyone wants the same outcome. There is just something else getting in the way. 21:45 Tim's experience aligns with the model in that he's had better outcomes when he has prepared, put effort into being open and aware, spent time unpacking and reframing interactions. 22:30 The five core energies are intrinsic to our core humanity. There is a close connection to authentic leadership. "Leadership in flow does not work by faking it". 25:00 One last reminder on the value of reframing. When aren't going to get things right every time. Instead of focussing on our failures, the article shares how we can still find pride in our intention and effort. What about you, dear listener? Does Leadership in Flow resonate with you? Do you wish you could turn back the clock and get a second chance? We'd love to hear from you! This episode is part 3 in my series on Inner Mastery. We think what drives us is the desire for something...out there. It's having a goal and wanting the goal so much that we're motivated enough to do what it takes to achieve it. This is how we parent. I've done it too. Provide an incentive. "Here is what you'll get...what you can have...if you'll get up and do the work." It can work, but it's a short term solution. Once the prize is achieved you go back to square one. What we want is to be people who are always motivated toward positive results. Again, you are always driven. But your drive is fueled by fear or desire. You can be driving backwards, you can be driven off on time wasting detours. You can be driven to massive wrecks. We all want to be driven to wake up daily and make positive progress toward fulfilling destinations, and regardless of the destination, be enjoying the ride. This comes from inner mastery. Note, don't hear "mastery" as a noun. A destination. Think of it as a verb. More like...inner mastering. Always growing. My expert in part one and two was Hitendra Wadhwa, a professor at Columbia Business School where his class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular classes. Hitendra's new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success. Here I have my brother and frequent co-host, Jared Angaza on to discuss these five keys, as in my long talk with Hitendra we never got past the first key, purpose. Next are wisdom, growth, love, and self-realization. My interest is digging into how we have cultural meanings programmed into us and misperceive all five core energies, and how we can get them flowing to better inform and direct our drive You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. In this episode we look at a key myth about drive. That it comes from focusing on an external motivation. You are driven to make more money, secure a certain relationship, attain a position, have an experience, etc…It's always “out there.” And yet all those things are simply items we focus on to get our inner self, driven. My book is about unlocking the drive inside you, and though I do in fact use external motives as tools, the work happens…inside. So here I kick off a series on Inner Mastery. My expert is Hitendra Wadhwa. Hitendra is a professor at Columbia Business School and Founder of the Mentora Institute. His class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular at Columbia Business School. Hitendra's mission is to discover, codify and teach the laws of success in life and leadership. Hitendra's new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success, and is endorsed by Arthur Brooks who we just had on the show for the second time, as well as Angela Duckworth, author of Grit, and 8 time Olympian Apolo Ohno. Ron and Ed welcome Hitendra Patil, President of the Global Finance and Accounting Outsourcing Services of Datamatics Business Solutions, Inc. and author of Rise of The Aiccountants: The What, Why, and How of Artificial Intelligence for Accountants. AI is way more than an amusement gimmick. At its core, AI is a powerful tool that can make accounting firm operations, analytics, decision-making, and client services more efficient, impactful, and insightful resulting in clients getting more delighted and, importantly, firm staff more productive, engaged, and happier. Unfortunately, other than starting to use publicly available AI tools, firm leaders who want to professionally leverage artificial intelligence often don't know where to start. AI journey can feel overwhelming—as it requires firms to analyze existing processes, make new choices for software solutions, decide the priorities for applying AI automation and prepare every part of the firm for the transition.

Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa, Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, is the author of Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. Dr. Wadhwa joins Marcel to discuss where everyone's success truly comes from our Inner Core. He explains his story behind the inspiration for his latest book, and unpacks a few of the 5 Core Energies to mastering your Inner Core; Purpose, Wisdom, Growth, Love, and Self-Realization. The Inner CoreDr. Hitendra Wadhwa discusses the book Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. The Inner Core is a place we can all find success, when focused on it and living truly from your Inner Core you will see from faith that the opportunities on the outside will manifest. The Inner Core can be fully accessed by activating these 5 Core Energies: Purpose, Wisdom, Growth, Love, and Self- Realization. While we unpack several energies, Dr. Wadhwa details all of the 5 stages for each of these energies in the book, “The essence of the book is inviting us to become familiar, and activate and to let our Inner Core shine through by putting these energies in action in everything we do.” [34:00] PurposeThe first stage of purpose Dr. Wadhwa calls a “Stirring” in which people hunger to get more out of life or from a crisis mode that changes your outlook or circumstance. This first stage leads to the following 4 stages: searching for the answers, defining values, focusing and affirming yourself by living by the things you've discovered, and finally fusion where you create a magical moment of living your purpose in all facets of your life. Can anyone pursue their purpose? Dr. Wadhwa says, “We may be restricted by our own imagination. What is it that we can manifest and do in the present moment in the circumstances that the universe has put us in?” [31:30] Love You do this by putting love into action. This core energy utilizes this beautiful analogy of love as a flower. Stage 1: Prepare the Soil. Dr. Wadhwa explains that the research says you must get to a place where you yourself feel adequately and fully loved because you cannot give what you do not have. Stage 2: Sew the Seeds. Look for the virtues, strengths, and beauty in life with appreciation, gratitude, abundance, and empathy. Stage 3: Remove the Weeds. In love, this means removing the hatred, grudges, and judgment from all places in your life. Stage 4: Prune the Branches. This critical piece in which you must take care of yourself even when it comes to the hard decisions. Stage 5: Make Love Bloom. Dr. Wadwha says, “The way I define love is, it's about taking joy in other people's joy, and taking success in other people's success… You are not meant to sit in splendid isolation from the rest of humanity but you're meant to be intertwined with them in beautiful ways.” [34:40] Removing the WeedsCommenting on Stage 3 of the Love Core Energy, Marcel comments that there are a lot of weeds, and the weeds are so tall we aren't able to see over them to the other side. He seeks tips from Dr. Wadhwa about truly removing judgment and hatred given the circumstances of our world. Dr. Wadhwa challenges the idea of Heroes versus Villains, and how we view the people who agree and disagree with us and reframes the way we think about the “Villains” with a lens to see them as “Heros”. “There is value in seeing things from a place of humble curiosity, and recognize that truth is more nuanced than a quick atomization and polarization of the world.” [54:25] Mentioned in this episode:Hitendra WadhwaHitendra Wadhwa (@HitendraWadhwa) on TwitterMentora InstituteMentora Foundation

Today we feature Professor Hitendra Wadhwa PhD who has been a fan of David's work for the past ten years. Hitendra has just published a new book, Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. Hitendra is a Professor of Practice at Columbia Business School and Founder of the Mentora Institute, and his class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular at Columbia Business School. He believes that the secret of leadership and success in business stems from inner mastery. He also has his own fascinating and skillfully produced podcast called Intersections where he interviews accomplished individuals from different spheres of human pursuit to draw out their insights and stories about the pursuit of success and happiness. One of Hitendra's aims has been to integrate current psychological trends with ancient wisdom in order to glean the most important ideas needed for happy and successful lives. He has backed this up with a daily meditation practice he began 20 years ago, seeking answers to the most basic questions about the meaning and purpose of our lives and a philosophy that leads to joy, connection, and productivity. Hitendra gives an example of how inner mastery can lead to outer impact. A colleague named Dan used to relentlessly find shortcomings and point to improved solutions every time Hitendra presented his work when he was first working as a business consultant. He said that he carried a grudge against Dan for several weeks because he was trying to impress his colleagues and felt put down by Dan. Of course, this type of attitude and defensiveness can easily trigger the very adversarial responses we fear. Then we tend to blame the “outer” and overlook how we might be inadvertently creating our own negative external reality. Fortunately, the opposite is equally true. When your attitude suddenly shifts, and your “inner” self changes, your outer reality will nearly always suddenly shift at the same time. One day, one of Hitendra' s supervisors said to him: You should be more like Dan. He's trying to help you take your game to the next level, but you don't take a similar interest in helping him find ways to improve his work!” Hitendra explained the impact of his supervisor's statement: “This comment suddenly turned on a light bulb in my head. I realized I was viewing Dan as an enemy, so if he criticized me, I thought he was against me, so I viewed him as the “enemy.” Instead, I decided to find the truth in his criticisms and began to view him as an ally, as a teacher, as someone who wanted to help me. “At that point, our entire relationship changed dramatically, and I felt empowered!” Of course, podcast fans will realize this as the Disarming Techniques, one of the Five Secrets of Effective Communication that David has popularized. Hitendra also discussed other themes in his new book, like what it means to “be true to yourself,” and how to discover the crown jewel within yourself, at your core. He also described how to tap into the five sources of core energy within yourself: Purpose, Wisdom, Growth, Love, and Self-Realization. He said that many people are afraid of Love, fearing that it is the same as weakness and will lead them to get taken advantage of. He suggested that in reality, love is a powerful force, and gave examples of the expression of love in a variety of successful business. He told many fun and inspiring stories, including his stuckness when trying to think of a way to honor his father's 80th birthday. He couldn't think of what he'd say at the celebration, because he'd always done the opposite of what his father had recommended. But then, while meditating, he saw that he'd been inspired all long by how his father had lived his life. He talked about the concept of transcendence as well as racism, and pointed out that we tend to label people based on some characteristic like skin color. But this can be very misleading, because two people who are Black, for example, will often have radically different backgrounds and life experiences. As an example, he described someone from the Caribbean who had no experience of racial discrimination when growing up. He emphasized that when we label people, we get lazy and do not respond to the reality and depth of who that person really is. Essentially, we are then putting people in “boxes” instead of seeing them for the full richness of who they are. He also said that our human identities are partly shared and partly unique. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. learned a great deal from Mahatma Gandhi, who in turn was inspired by Leo Tolstoy—indicating a merger of three strikingly different cultures. Using story-telling, Hitendra addressed basic questions like: How do we integrate our (partially hidden) inner and outer selves? Who am I, really? What's my purpose in the universe? He said that what many psychologists believe they “discover” is actually not new, but based on ancient wisdom, like the practice of gratitude in meditation, and shifting your mindsets, and tuning in to your capacity for compassion and kindness, and finding the best of yourself. Rhonda and I want to thank Hitendra for his journey and wonderful new book, and all of you as well for tuning in and joining us on our journey! Warmly, Rhonda, Hitendra, and David

Our modern lives are designed to keep death out of our sight. We do not actively think about or discuss this subject, except when death claims someone in our community. But what if we stepped back from life to consciously reflect on death and our attitude toward it? What if we were to make a friend out of this foe?

Hitendra Patil of AccountantsWorld, who also frequently appears on the list of the Top 100 Most Influential People In Accounting, joined us for this episode of Where Accountants Go, the Accounting Careers Podcast. We like to cover a variety of career topics for accounting professionals on this show, and entrepreneurship-done-well is definitely one of them. In this episode, Hitendra discusses the concept of how to become an “Accountaneur”. This particular term, which Hitendra has trademarked, encompasses the idea of not just being a self-employed accountant, but being successful in the endeavor from both the earnings standpoint and the desired lifestyle perspective. You will need to listen to the audio interview for a complete definition, but a large part of what Hitendra discusses is how to evolve past simply being a client's chosen accountant, and going further to learn their business and the nuances of how they become successful. This allows the Accountaneur to become more of the trusted advisor that we all aspire to be. It really is a good discussion we have in this approximate 1-hour episode. What were you doing just before you turned 18 years old? For Om Hitendra Mahajan, he was celebrating his birthday early by breaking a Guinness World Record, cycling the entire country of India from Kashmir in the North to Kanyakumari in the South––a total of 3,600 km (roughly 2,200 miles)––in a record time of 8 days 7 hours 38 minutes. But like most ultra cycling adventures, it wasn't without its difficulties. Fortunately for Om, he had an all-star crew with Indian ultra cycling great, Kabir Rachure who finished RAAM solo in 2019, and Om's own father, Hitendra Mahajan, and uncle, Mahendra Mahajan, who were the first 2-person Indian team to finish RAAM in 2015. Most surprisingly, however, is that Om has only been riding ultra distances for 3 months before his world record attempt, after 5 years of National level road racing. Om's next adventure: the 2021 edition of the Race Across America. You'll definitely want to follow this young superstar's journey! Let's roll!
