In the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police in May 2020, protests against police brutality and racial injustice broke out across the US. In response, many of the world’s biggest brands issued statements of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and, while the sentiment was all good and well, many people have called these companies out for making generic statements that ring hollow. Today’s guests are Melanie Trottier and Leah Sookoo, resident Social Media Lead and Creative Copywriter respectively at Arcade Studios. This episode will hopefully serve as a guide for brands and companies to show their support for Black and marginalized communities in real, actionable ways, rather than putting out statements of support that ring hollow. Tuning in, you’ll hear about the importance of the language that you use from Leah, and how she saw brands either detract from or contribute to the discourse around racial injustice in 2020. She also talks about the dangers of virtue signalling, gaslighting, and staying silent, and shares her advice for starting from a place of humility, being well versed in the issues you’re addressing, and never being afraid to vocalize your values. Melanie shares her perspective as a brand manager and talks about the importance of being specific about the issues that affect your customers. She also emphasizes why racial equality should be part of every company’s brand pillars, vision, and mission, highlights the importance of being available for queries on social media, and advises brands to include more diverse voices in their social media marketing and hire a professional to manage it. Charlotte Mason with Leah Boden Leah is a long-time student and practitioner of the Charlotte Mason method of education and is passionate about helping parents find their freedom within the philosophy. Leah and her husband Dave have 4 homeschooled children. She writes, speaks and podcasts using the Charlotte Mason philosophy as a springboard into her lessons on childhood, motherhood and education. Leah delights in coaching and leading others in this refreshing way of life. She is a speaker and writer for the international Wild + Free homeschooling community and creator of Modern Miss Mason. In This Episode I invited Leah to join me on this episode because I knew she would be a wonderful person to talk about the method and philosophy of Charlotte Mason. After 14 years Leah still carries the passion and enthusiasm that she had from the beginning. In this episode we discussed; Charlotte Mason- The prolific writer, educator and her vision and impact. Strategically planning the year- How Leah does this and what she has learned over the years. Creating rhythms of rest and pause. What their day looks like-morning rhythms and atmosphere The foundations of the Charlotte Mason philosophy- 1. Children are born persons. They are born whole. Our role as parents is to support this. 2. Education is the science of relations. Relationships are what matter. How we view children, how we view education and how all of that comes together is the foundation of the philosophy. The power and joy of using "Living Books" Finding your freedom within the philosophy Charlotte Mason and religion- can all backgrounds and beliefs follow the method? Is there a lack of cultural diversity in the method? The secret to longevity in homeschooling Homeschooling in the UK At the end of the episode I asked Leah to talk a little about life and requirements for homeschoolers in the UK. I have listeners from all over the world, including the UK and some are exploring homeschooling for the first time. Is there freedom or is it regulated? What if your child wants to attend college or university in the UK? Even though Leah and I practice different philosophies, our belief in children and learning remains the same; trust, joy in learning and relationships. We both agree that we are learning alongside our kids and our role as home educators is in supporting the beauty and passion of childhood. How do you bridge the gap between students who do not have the necessary experience and network that will help them get hired after college and companies who are counting their losses and are working to avoid hiring the wrong people? Leah Davidson saw this as a dilemma that persists in society and she has made it her mission to connect students looking to gain real-world experience with companies who are willing to host exciting projects. Leah Davidson is an entrepreneurial powerhouse with a compelling personal story. She's the co-founder of Canduit, a SaaS platform for experiential learning that matches students looking to gain real-world experience with companies hosting exciting projects. Canduit is currently working with about 30 plus universities in North and Latin America, as well as online education programs, high schools, and camps.  Before co-founding Canduit, Leah was the Strategic Partner Manager at DoorDash where she was responsible for strategy and operational roles. While at DoorDash, she founded Project Dash which used DoorDash’s logistics network to minimize food waste and fight hunger.  Leah has served as a United Nations Youth Ambassador which involves various roles for different UN agencies including being a blogger for UNICEF's Voices of Youth Initiative on the Environment and Climate Change. She has also served as a youth expert policymaker for UNESCO on education and sustainable development at a conference hosted in Japan.  Leah earned her Bachelor of Science degree and graduated as summa cum laude from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where she majored in Economics Management in Global Innovation and minored in English.  What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks Leah Davidson shares how being the first to attend college in her family shaped her time at Wharton and her professional life How Leah realized the best way to bridge the gap between students looking for experiential learning and companies who wanted to hire the right talent  Leah discusses piloting Canduit’s technology in Santiago, Chile The real-world problems and use-cases that shaped Canduit’s target market  Leah shares her perspective on the market outlook for experiential and online learning  How Canduit can support and work with PhDs and postdocs Leah shares her advice on funding and other resources for young startup founders  Skills Leah has found useful in her leadership role  Connect with Leah Davidson Canduit Leah Davidson on LinkedIn Greg Lewin on LinkedIn DoorDash Enabling Academic and Workplace Connection  Finding out what they want to do after years of studying is a struggle for students at any level. And even when they know, getting the job they desire remains elusive to many because they lack the experience and connections necessary to land a job that finds them to be the right fit. On the other hand, employers are working hard to minimize their expenditures for recruitment while at the same time, optimizing their recruitment efforts. They want to make sure they hire the right people but they often lack the tools that can help them find the right talent for the position that they need to fill. Having been on the student side, Leah Davidson understands the anxiety it creates among her peers, and she learned from her partner, Greg Lewin, that the same woes ail the corporate world. This is why they decided to bridge the gap between students looking to gain experiential learning that they can add to their resume and companies who want to work with the right people for the right job. And so they created Canduit, a SaaS platform that matches students looking to gain real-world experience with companies hosting exciting projects.  More exposure for students in a less confrontational setting  Experience and connection are often necessary to help students land their dream job after the years they spent studying and preparing for their chosen career. It would be helpful for them to be exposed to companies with goals and businesses geared towards the path they want to take because this will do two things: concretize their career trajectory and provide them with experiences that they can add to their resume. Canduit aims to provide students with an opportunity to gain this exposure in a less confrontational setting. They are able to provide students with real-life experience on what it would be like to work in the industry they are aiming for and can help pave the path towards getting hired by even better companies in the future. According to Leah, it’s not always about getting hired by the big names from the get-go, it’s more important to be hired by companies who are a perfect fit for your skills and your ideal career path. As for companies, Canduit is able to give them a roster of candidates who are capable of fulfilling the needs of their company, people with the right technical know-how and a passion to learn the ropes and get the job done. They allow companies to get a glimpse of who to hire based on accurate work samples, which are the number one predictor on job performance. Doing this also takes away the confrontational process of students and employers trying to sell themselves.  Canduit offers both students and companies an opportunity to work together both online and offline, giving them the space they need to build networks, connections, and answering the need to find the right fit for jobs and experiences. There’s a part of our food system that’s not being talked about: racial inequality. The division of land, government subsidies, and financial resources that are available favor white farmers. Meanwhile, many of our sustainable farming practices actually stem from African and indigenous roots. Since 1920 African-American farmers have lost over 14 million acres of land. Combine this with the fact that Black communities are also at a higher risk of illnesses due to a lack of access to fresh, nutritious food. It’s food apartheid. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I was joined by Leah Penniman to dig into the racial injustice that continues to smolder in our current food system. Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land. As Co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs—including farmer training for Black and Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Her book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land is a love song for the land and her people. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv and Thrive Market.I always love checking out the latest science for anti-aging and recently I discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. We rarely get a duo as dynamic as CEO, Alex Mashinsky and Head of Global Partnerships, Leah Jonas. I knew this was going to be fun and informative. You don’t have to go deep into a search for the name Alex Mashinsky before you uncover a plethora of amazing feats. Not only does Alex have an eye for the future, but he understands what it takes to get there. A big part of “getting there” is surrounding yourself with amazing people and one of those people on this journey with Alex is Leah Jonas.  “Are you part of the problem or part of the solution” – Alex Mashinsky With Leah’s energetic and inviting personality it’s no wonder she’s the head of partnerships. Now living in Tel Aviv, she is helping expand the reach of the Celsius Network. As a previous part of the core team in New York, she has a unique perspective on remote teams and how to keep them focused.  Celsius’s most well known feature is their ability to for individuals to receive interest on the crypto they deposit. Twenty years ago it was commonplace for the average person to expect to earn interest on their money deposited at a bank. In this day and age, people never have to go into a branch, yet parts of the world are now experiencing negative interest rates. Additionally, there are still entire populations and geographies with access to banking of any kind, let along the concept of earning on your savings.  Gain Interest on your Crypto Celsius Network is bringing to the masses a new way to let your money make money. Have you ever wondered why empaths and narcissists are often so attracted to each other? Or what it means when people talk about co-dependency? In this conversation today with Leah Morris we dive into the topic of relationships - especially the kinds of unhealthy patterns so many of us can fall into. We discuss what they are, how to avoid them, and also how to attract the kind of love that is deep, true and long-lasting… In this episode we discussed: Leah’s journey after divorce and what it really meant to fall in love again - with relationships, career, life, and self Co-dependency - what it is, how to know if you’re co-dependent Leah’s experience of stepping into healthier relationships Why narcissists end up with highly sensitive and empathic people The power of language and a simple tool we can use to shift how we communicate with more confidence and authenticity How to step OUT of a victim mindset How Leah shifted her relationship to money from scarcity to abundance on her journey as an entrepreneur Stay in touch with Leah Website Instagram Facebook   Leah Morris is a Relationship Transition Coach, founder of Life Remade, published writer, and speaker. She helps people to authentically  process their feelings, thoughts, and emotions in order to give them a deeper understanding of themselves and others.  Her 1:1 work consists of 3 main areas: relationship trauma recovery, communication skills enhancement, and  empowered personal development. She specializes in helping her clients gain a solid sense of Self Worth, develop unshakable intuitive Confidence, and heal after emotional Heartbreak so they can find the deep and meaningful connections that they’ve been yearning for. From Leah: “Through my personal journey, I've experienced what brokenness feels like. It's dark and small. I lived a life of being "powerless," placing my self-worth in anything but myself, wanting others to love me more than I was loving me, giving up my whole life to play a supporting role in everyone else's... just to have it all fall apart. When I finally woke up, I found myself feeling exhausted, alone, and purposeless. It's here where I’ve gained insights that have allowed me to step into my own power, to trust myself so much that my actions reflect my truth, to know the value of deeply listening to my inner voice and finding connection with others, and to not let my fears lead my life. When we lose touch with our instincts, everything else doesn't seem to make much sense. Through my creativity and innovative perspective, I help guide you to discover new ways to redirect you toward YOUR dreams. My ability to focus on you, read between the lines, ask the right questions and offer sincere advice and feedback comes from an insatiable curiosity and commitment to your personal development. I know how it feels to finally come out of the dark, and it's my life's passion to get you there too.”
