Internet Marketing and Entrepreneurship with Miles

Gmail and Yahoo have imposed new email rules for bulk senders (aka email marketers).  This video shows you exactly what you need to set up to make sure your emails hit the inbox and don't go to spam!   These new email rules for 2024 focus on email validation and email authentication to combat spam with the new Gmail AI algorithm.  For all the nerdy details, here is the post that explains everything straight from Google - blog.google/products/gmail/gmail-security-authentication-spam-protection/ Here is my post that teaches you how to setup and grow your email list - www.milesbeckler.com/how-to-grow-your-email-list/ Follow along in this email marketing video that shows you exactly how to verify your email address in your autoresponder and how to set up the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records at your domain name's DNS.   Here are the links shown in the video: I recommend aweber for new email marketers - www.milesbeckler.com/aweber   Here is the Aweber post that walks you step by step through the process: help.aweber.com/hc/en-us/articles/19827128387867-How-to-comply-with-Google-Yahoo-s-new-sending-requirements-before-February-2024 Here is the Aweber post about the SPF record;  help.aweber.com/hc/en-us/articles/4410070518427-Do-I-need-to-update-my-domain-s-SPF-record-The-answer-is-No How to scrub your list in Aweber - www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O6QH2Es1tA If you're on ActiveCampaign, here's the link to their tool to help you get verified - www.activecampaign.com/dkim-spf-check/ Here is the text from the document I was showing in the video so you can have a checklist to follow to get your new email sender requirements set up based on the new rules from Gmail and Yahoo!   Step-By-Step! Here's How To Comply With Gmail & Yahoo's New Email Rules For 2024: Step 1: Verify your YourName @ YourDomain.com email address! Step 2: Add your DKIM records to your domain's DNS zone via a Cname record  Step 3: Add your DMARC records to your domain's DNS zone via a TXT record Step 4: Add your SPF records to your domain's DNS zone via a TXT record Step 5: Get your domain name set up at postmasters.google.com and keep your spam rate below .3%!!! By taking these 5 steps, your email marketing should not be affected by these changes and you should continue to hit the primary inbox with all of your marketing emails. If you skip these processes, you risk having your emails go straight to spam, lowering your open rates and your click-through rates... Which would result in less revenue for your online business.

How can you get in the news with a good news story? How do you catch the attention of the media and how do you show up? Malika Dudley has studied the science of communication and is a TV reporter.  Episode 102 (Malika is based in Hawaii) In this conversation with Malika Dudley we explore: How to get your good news story noticed by the media How to make your offer irresistible How to communicate with the media Why one "No" doesn't really mean "No" How to build ongoing positive relationships with the media How to talk on television in studio or on Zoom About Malika Dudley: Malika is a TV reporter based in Hawaii. She is a multi-award winning journalist with 2 Emmy nominations, a Murrow and multiple SPJ (Society for Professional Journalists) awards. She is host of The Communification Podcast - a podcast that will help you unlock your communication potential and feel less alone in your communication struggles. Visit the podcast here or click image below https://www.communificationpodcast.com/ This is Malika's second appearance on Your Intended Message. You can listen to her first appearance in episode 82. Here's an example of a good news story done well. Malika interviews community volunteer, Kaimana Brummel, talking about "Kaukau 4 Keiki" a food share program for children when they are not in school. Notice how well Kaimana conveys her message. https://www.kitv.com/news/local/urgent-need-for-volunteer-delivery-drivers-to-feed-maui-countys-hungry/article_422fc328-60fe-11ec-a0c3-cf510670aeab.html   Excerpts from this conversation with Malika Dudley 02:48 Probably the newscast that you're going to identify and try to get on would be the morning show, instead of the evening show. Morning shows are longer. Number one, they are more fluid. And they allow for that good news to kind of work its way into the forecast. Every newscast wants to also have good news.   03:13 If you're trying to get into an evening newscast, you're trying to get in the kicker, probably. So that's the last little tidbit that gets shown right before they say goodbye. And usually it's something light and fun to kind of wrap up the show and not leave people with that bad taste in their mouth of the everything is doom and gloom. It's the universe, the kids from the University of Hawaii, that won in Las Vegas with their driverless remote control car. So it's something that is intriguing, but not necessarily a new story, but can be fun.  Oh, that's cool. You kind of want to be in that category of, Oh, that's cool. If you're going for the evening newscasts, it would be something small like that. So there are several different things that you can do. One thing is make it easy for us. How do you make it easy for the reporter or the producer or the anchor to have you on the show? One way is to offer up your party's as something that you can link this to current events. So what's going on right now? And how can you help someone to solve that problem? And this is something that you've thought about a lot. All business leaders do. So you probably already know the answer to that question. So let's say that you're a Life Consultant, and it happens to be January. Send out your press release and explain the things that you would be able to say on the air. Now keep in mind that you're probably going to get, at most three minutes of time. So a three minute interview. So you don't want to overwhelm the press release with all the things, you know, you want to give them bullet points. So get good at writing press releases. Here's a paragraph about what I do. Here's what I can tell you on the newscast. Bullet points. Here is a little bit about me and my background, and, and then provide assets. Media assets, like video, headshots, just whatever you think they might be able to use on the newscast, we definitely need visuals. If you're talking about, so let's let's go with that life coach analogy. Here are the five things that you can do to have a great year this year. And you have B roll of one of your coaching clients exercising, right, and that's number one is exercise. So you send them a 15 second clip of you know, someone exercising, sure, we could go through our files and find the B roll video of exercise. ----- 12:37 So if you can get your friends to email the news at whatever the news station email is because that email goes to everybody in the news organization, if you can get your people to email in and say, hey, wow, thank you so much for that segment by data data that this morning, I learned data data data, I would so love to see more of that. It doesn't go on deaf ears. I mean, I can't tell you, if you guys didn't listen to the last podcast that we did, that I did with George, where we talked about 20% of the people love you 20% of the people hate you. And then the ones in the middle are indifferent. The indifferent ones never email the news. The haters do. And the lovers Oh, I wish they did more. And so when we get one of those emails, the news director legit will send that out to everyone and say, Look, guys, we did such a great job. And just know that when you're doing your job, people like Eddie, appreciate it. And so I can't tell you how much that could actually influence whether or not you as this expert. Hopefully you're really good at what you're doing. Right and you are good on camera and it's something that definitely helps right I mean, if you if this is in your wheelhouse and you can talk in sound bites, you've got a really great pitch. I don't see why they wouldn't say yes to something like that. And when you have your peeps your squad, you know emailing in to say hey, that was great. That could help so get your your friends your fans to to vouch for you. Because because the media notices when people right, the media probably gets enough nasty messages and not enough encouraging messages. When they do get encouraging messages, hey, we're doing something good. Maybe we should do more of that. Yeah, and don't overwhelm them though, right? I mean, you don't want to ask, like don't put it on social media, and then they get 50 emails. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. We'll examine the aspects of how we communicate one-to-one, one to few and one to many – plus that important conversation, one to self. #ALB82 – John Warrillow This month's episode is slightly different, as you know we normally chat with a client, but today we are taking to bestselling author John Warrillow, who is the author of best-selling book Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You was recognized by both Fortune and Inc. as one of the best business books of 2011 and just so happens to be John Lamerton's favourite book. John is also the host of Built to Sell Radio, ranked by Forbes as one of the world's 10 best podcasts for business owners.  In 2015, John wrote another best-selling book, The Automatic Customer: Creating a Subscription Business in Any Industry.  John completes the trilogy with his latest book, The Art of Selling Your Business: Winning Strategies & Secret Hacks for Exiting on Top. Let's get the house valued Just because you book a valuation, doesn't necessarily mean you are going to sell your house that month, the same applies for your retirement pot, you check it as you want it to be ready when you are ready to move house or retire. Well, the same applies for your business.   Scaling back The pandemic has been a struggle for most business owners, but what many have realised is that actually they are able to operate a much leaner business model, that perhaps you do not need offices and multiple overheads. And this in turn has seen a trend in more lifestyle businesses being created. Subscription models are the way forward John and Jason are HUGE fans of a subscription model, in fact most of their businesses run on this model. But why do they like them so much? Yes or No How much time would you free up by being able to answer employees' questions with a simple Yes or No answer? Learn the art of a “Yesable question” So, do you want to sell your business? You probably don't, but how many of you would like to know you “COULD” sell your business if you wanted too? If you’re a highly sensitive person (HSP), chances are you have trouble finding your voice—and that can cause a lot of anxiety. In this episode of Woman Worriers, host Elizabeth Cush welcomes back psychotherapist April Snow, who talks about how you can learn to trust your voice, set healthy boundaries and speak up for your needs. Quotes: “When you’re highly sensitive, that sensation is loud.” — April Snow “We start to doubt ourselves. We start to silence that inner wisdom, that intuition.” — April Snow “Anxiety is a big marker that you’re living a lifestyle that’s not quite in alignment with your temperament.” — April Snow “Because of our level of empathy, if someone else is hurting, we’re hurting.” — April Snow “A lot of time when HSPs are anxious, it’s just because they’re doing too much.” — April Snow “Saying ‘No’ some of the time is actually preserving the relationship.” — April Snow EPISODE 128   Show Notes: You pick up on things in your environment—things others don’t notice. You feel much more deeply than others do. When others can’t or won’t validate your perceptions and emotions, you begin to stop trusting yourself. That’s the plight of the highly sensitive person (HSP). In this episode of the Woman Worriers podcast, host Elizabeth Cush, of Progression Counseling in Annapolis, Md., and her guest April Snow, a San Francisco-based psychotherapist and highly sensitive person, delve deeper into what it means to be an HSP and an introvert, how being an HSP might make it more difficult to know and trust your voice, and how you can find your voice and start to learn to advocate for your needs in order to ease you anxiety. Listen and learn: The core characteristics of a highly sensitive person Why being highly sensitive might lead you to doubt yourself and silence your voice What it means to be an HSP and an introvert—and why it can feel exhausting and overwhelming Why so many highly sensitive women experience anxiety Why it’s important to set limits on how much you take on—and why it can be hard to do so How empathy and guilt are related The small lifestyle changes that can make the biggest difference in easing your anxiety How to recognize what’s really making you anxious Ways to explore boundary-setting and to identify different steps you could take to feel more comfortable The power of the pause and the reality check Three things you should think about before saying “yes” (or “no”) Ways to get the time you need to make a decision that feels right How to say “No” when saying “No” feels too hard—and why it’s OK to say “No” How self-compassion work can help The benefits you can experience when you treat yourself with care and compassion Learn More > April Snow, LMFT, bio > April Snow’s Expansive Heart website > The Expansive Heart on Instagram > The Expansive Heart on Facebook > Simple Self-Care Tools to Reduce Anxiety + Overwhelm by April Snow > “How to Set Boundaries as an HSP” by April Snow > “How to Overcome Dissatisfaction in Your Relationship as an HSP” by April Snow > The CBT Workbook for Perfectionism: Evidence-Based Skills to Help You Let Go Of Self-Criticism, Build Self-Esteem, and Find Balance by Sharon Martin, MSW, LCSW > Self-Compassion Guided Meditations and Exercises by Dr. Kristen Neff > Divergent Mind: Thriving in a World That Wasn’t Designed for You by Jenara Nerenberg > The Highly Sensitive Parent: Be Brilliant in Your Role Even When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine N. In today’s episode the boys discuss parenting specifically from the ages of 15-20 and the difficult social scenarios that you are dealt with as a parent in these tough times. We always love a good hypothetical, and in today’s show we go through a tonne of them. How much responsibility do you give them? Is it best to parent as a “mate”? Is it truely case by case or is it a flat NO? How much influence is the groundwork of parenting done at an early age? How much should you trust your child’s friends... and the list goes on! Ultimately these scenarios end up on your lap as a parent. How much do you let slide or should you be strict like an army sergeant? Decisions... Decisions.. Enjoy! None of that soft-boiled 'haven't heard about it in a while' or 'I watched it with one eye closed'. Neither of these ne'er-do-wells had any idea this movie existed until probably a couple of weeks ago. But there are plenty of people who are very aware of it - does the name 'Martin Scorsese' mean anything to you? No? How about 'Criterion Collection?' Still no? How about 'Abraham Lincoln'? The most eagerly awaited movie of all time? The most hated CG character of all time? Meesa be thinkin' you know da movie, okey-day! It's Star Wars Episode 1, where we learn the origins of galactic baddie and Sith Lord extraordinaire Darth Vader! Turns out he was just an annoying little kid and occasional hot rod on the racetrack. But there was still much to love about George Lucas' ambitious, digitally saturated return to our favorite space adventure franchise. Specifically, every second Darth Maul was onscreen. The rest is pretty much Bantha poodoo. You should still listen anyway. No? How wude!

This is a long movie with lots and lots of cultural- and time-bound references, and it's also a classic. And, it's about pronunciation! Do you like linguistics? No? How about applied linguistics? No? How about sociolinguistics? No? How about love stories with cultural and time bound references? Well any one of those, and this movie is for you. If not, well, we didn't much like it either. Nevertheless, in it you will find some fascinating references to teaching pronunciation that work in the movie, and might even work in a classroom. Who knows - better try!

It’s only two letters long, but the word “no” can be one of the hardest words to say out loud. In this episode, we talk about why no is every bit as important a word for a creative as yes. We’ll talk about earthworms, the trifecta of yes, how to strengthen your no muscle and Christmas candles. Then we interview the international bestselling “anti-guru” Sarah Knight, author of the No F*cks Given guides and ask her these two questions: 1) How do you decide when to say no? And 2) What’s the best way to say no? 129 | Marcus Murphy Teaches Us That Failure Doesn’t Have to be a Death Sentence When someone says NO to you, what is your first thought? Marcus Murphy is an entrepreneur and sales expert who cares deeply about the flourishing and success of entrepreneurs. Marcus previously worked for Yelp in San Francisco, going from start-up to multi-billion dollar giant. He has also worked at Infusionsoft as the Global Partner Development Manager where he developed and broadened new international markets through strategic partnerships, and is a recognized instructor and speaker at LinkedIn. Currently, the Head of Business Development & Partnerships at DigitalMarketer, Marcus has pioneered new and effective techniques that enhance the results of the traditional inside sales model.  He believes a combination of inside sales, social selling, and strategic partnerships are the next generation of business growth. Marcus prides himself on his ability to connect with diverse and international audiences while captivating their attention with storytelling. Hearing a NO is a defining moment in your business, right? Whether it’s a supplier, investor, or customer, that NO is going to change how you move forward! Anyone good at sales is going to look at every NO as a learning opportunity: what can we learn from that NO? How can this NO teach us what to do in our next sales meeting, or pitch? I’ve heard a lot of NO’s in my career, and every single one of them has taught me something. Back when I was pitching Jamba Juice, to bring FITzee Foods into their stores. I thought we were on the way to a huge YES, but they told us NO. To make it worse, it was through email. Looking back with everything I’ve learned about sales since then, I can see a lot of improvement. There are so many steps to nurturing a sales relationship, and I’d skipped some along the way.  But failure isn’t just failure unless you choose to learn from it! Take lessons from the NO’s, and move on to your next win! This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Marcus Murphy, works with Digital Marketer. He’s heard a lot of NO’s in his career, and is here to share exactly what he has learned from those NO’s, and how you can learn from them too! If you’re feeling discouraged from the NO’s you’re hearing, make sure that you tune into this episode of Success Unfiltered! Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered! Be sure to join us next week for our next new episode! What Do You Do When The Client Says NO? Rejection in sales can be harsh. How do you get back in the game after one too many NOs? Learn how to get over the NO’s in this guide. Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Marcus Murphy. Marcus shares about his sales history, from selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door, all the way to working for Yelp! “Rejection is so basic...we are in a culture of winning.” ~ Marcus Murphy Marcus shares about how he is a serial entrepreneur: rejection is in his DNA. Failure is a great learning tool, but if you don’t take the time to learn from it, it’s nothing more than just failure. Marcus shares the juicy details about how he landed a $30,000 deal as a marketer: he had a plan with blog posts and social media management. But because he didn’t communicate, he got fired from the job, and had to give $20,000 back.  The reason for that failure? It wasn’t about the numbers of the stats: it was HIM. They didn’t like Marcus and working with him.  The lesson to learn is that not everyone is going to like you; we’re all an acquired taste. “You can’t go into sales trying to dodge rejection. You need to embrace the fact that it is going to happen.” ~ Marcus Murphy Marcus advises that you should always assume that the first response will be NO, and keep an option in your back pocket. If someone says NO, then ask when was the last time that they spent that amount of money! Find out what would make it worth it to them.  You have to show your customers or clients the value, and build the hype and anticipation. The best salespeople are those who are comfortable with silence.  Help them to see what their lives would look like after your product or service. It’s all about creating the best before state and after state, and showing how you make your customer’s lives better. How can you appropriately sell to people? Marcus shares the steps of selling, and how you can break past the stigma of selling. Marcus encourages all of his sales reps that he works with to watch the movie, Patch Adams, to reinforce that first and foremost, it’s all about the people and the relationships. Marcus shares about the 12 stages of human intimacy, and how they relate to sales. When you’re in sales, all 12 of those steps are important, and help with closing the sale at the end. You can’t skip any of the steps: that’s where the stigma of sales comes from. Keep your core values at the front of everything that you do, and don’t be afraid to say NO to potential clients and customers who don’t fit those values. Keep looking for wins, especially in relationships. Some of Marcus’ best friends are the people he has made the most money. Marcus shares what he would tell his younger self. We all love babies right? Now what if we replaced babies with 6 year old kids with stunted growth and pasted their heads onto the bodies of little people? No? How about some CGI lip-syncing so they can talk? No? Ok, well how about stuffing a child actor into a bin of soiled undies? Yes, please. So Baby Geniuses and it's followup are two of the lowest rated movies that have ever existed, despite the overwhelming amount of fake 10/10 reviews on IMDB, it still was a box-office smash. Why? Because people love babies! Babies can do no wrong! Even when they are covered in dookie, murdering bums, imitating John Travolta and keeping the secrets of life to themselves out of selfish dickery! I'm not really sure if people who went to this for love of babies actually paid attention to what these awful children are actually up to. On the other side of the coin, Kathleen Turner and Christopher Lloyd are evil because we're told their evil even though their actions and motivations are parallels of our "hero adults" Kim Cattrell and Peter MacNicol which only reveals more about these horrific little baby monsters. While, we can't in good faith say that Baby Geniuses is a do for fans of crappy films, it's so close to being one of the greatest bad movies ever if only it could have stuck with babies doing karate and diving into dumpsters, but sadly tries to put the good-feelers into it's clearly moronic intended audience. Do or don't, what the hell do we care. Our souls have been eroded by dancing babies.

Have you ever set a goal with a friend and then completely forgot about it? And when they shoot you a text reminder, you recommit and get to work on it?   One of the things I LOVE about my coach is that she checks in. In the past, I’d have coaches that I’d speak to every other week and I’d feel great the day of our call. Now, we do a 30 minute call in our off coaching weeks to see where I’m at, if I’ve run into obstacles and how I can course correct to get back on track.   It’s easy to get caught up in the do…..caught up in our day…..and to forget our intention.  And suddenly, we are so far from where we started, we feel like the day is a waste, and we’ll start over the next day. But how much time are we losing? And ultimately, we are building a muscle of being in this lower energy, in a state of business or of worry or of checking out.   So how do you check in to stay IN your Be State?   Check In Questions Am I being _____ in this moment? Does watching this/doing this/eating this support me? How can I be more _____ in this moment?   When you’re checking in often, it’s easier to course correct.   Checked in - am I being focused, feeling and in flow in this moment? NO! Does doing this more support me? No? How can I be more? Seek first to understand, remove the distraction, recenter myself.   Here’s a highly effective and simple way to ensure that you’re in your BE state throughout the day…..by giving yourself daily reminders that force you to stop and go through this process.   Setting Alarms Select the time of day that you are often the most stressed, or find yourself busy. Set an alarm to BE your ideal state. Select a song that helps you feel that way Take a moment at that time to recenter yourself, focus on your breath. You can listen to the song for a minute or two, or take a few minutes to meditate. That alarm is going to go off EXACTLY when you need it!   Finally, when you’re finished listening to this, go to www.futureme.org. You’re going to write yourself a letter. Describe the state you want to live in. How does your life look different when you show up and live in this state? How do you impact others around you? What does it allow you to experience? Who deserves this best you? How do you feel when you achieve the things you want to do, but by being you? What does becoming this person mean to you?   You can choose when that email shows up - 1 year later, a month later? When you receive it, you’ll have completely forgot you wrote it, but it’ll show up when you absolutely need it most.   For more info on the host, visit, www.rebeccacafiero.com and follow Rebecca on Instagram @rebeccacafiero ! How can we learn to say, NO? How do we bring self-love into our lives? We live our chaotic lives through the lens of social media and so many external pressures and this has caused us to lose the true connection to ourselves and our core authenticity. Our TRUTH. We judge ourselves hard. Sometimes harder than others might be doing it. 8:00 Kelly discusses having to end a coaching/consulting relationship and why it was so hard. If people are disappointed with our NO's - it is because they have an agenda of their own. It is not for you to own. We cannot own other's disappointments nor their reactions. We can only bless them and trust in our truth. 12:30 Kelly Childs standing up to City Council and Developers to speak her TRUTH and not shrink. Being brave in a patriarchal world.

How many times has someone told you NO? How many times have you told yourself NO? Maybe you’re “asking for permission” or maybe you’re trying to sell a product or service and all you keep hearing is NO. I want you to forget about the NO and start focusing on the YES. What can you says YES to more often in your life? What do you need to give yourself permission to do? Do you want to quit that job you hate, apply for that promotion you deserve, start that business and be your boss FINALLY, or run that race you keep putting off. I want you to find more ways to say YES to yourself and your big vision. When you say YES to yourself more often, it will make it easier for others to say YES to you (and themselves) too!! At the end of 2018, when we should have been celebrating, hibernating and contemplating, most of us were busy. Busy shopping for the holidays. Busy meeting end-of-year deadlines. Busy running from one event to the next. December 31st became a finish line that we were racing toward, and the pressure of meeting that arbitrary cutoff date left many of us stressed and in some cases, unhealthy. But what if you could refuse the rat race and live a different life? Today on the podcast, Sylvia shares three nuggets to help you get out of the rat race, once and for all. She explains why life is NOT a race with a finish line or deadline and addresses how to leverage the power of a polite NO. Sylvia also explores the pitfalls of competition, describing how comparison kills self-esteem and destroys our connection with others. Finally, Sylvia coaches you through the exercise of comparing who you are now with who you have been and who you could become, offering insight around the value of engaging in conversation with your anticipated future self. Listen in as Sylvia inspires you to stand firm in the knowledge that you are enough—in all your glorious human imperfection and messiness! What’s the greatest gift you can give to someone else? It’s a debatable subject, but what could possibly be more valuable to someone with kidney disease than to receive a kidney from a living donor? Today’s show introduces you to an amazing person with a truly amazing story. Jason Nothdurft is a friend of mine and a true superhero. He’s a married, 32-year-old police dispatcher with a 2-year-old puppy and his first child due in April. Jason donated his kidney in 2014, and has dedicated much of his free time to advocating on behalf of kidney patients and living organ donors. The saying is true: “Not all superheroes wear capes.” Jason is a remarkable person with a spirit of compassion and sacrifice, and I’m thrilled to share his journey of being an organ donor to highlight this important cause. Learning from mistakes What did you want to be as a kid? Police dispatcher is probably not a profession that many people aspire to, and even though it’s not a glamorous job, the dispatchers are the ultimate first responders. They are the first point of contact when people need help in emergency situations. When Jason started out, he admits that he was intimidated by parts of the job and doubted his ability to respond correctly to emergencies. How did he learn? By making mistakes. His lessons to others are that there are always things to learn and ways to improve. TWEET: We all learn by making mistakes. It’s one of the best ways to improve! @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams Saying YES and NO How do you handle the age-old dilemma of when to say YES and when to say NO? For Jason, he learned that he couldn’t focus on all the things he wanted to do--and do them well. In reducing his stress levels, he chose instead to focus on 1-2 things, and even went to his boss and explained that he needed to scale back. These brave decisions can be selfish AND selfless at the same time. Mental health is not openly discussed among law enforcement, but we need to improve on this, remove the stigma, and provide resources. TWEET: We need to remove the stigma of mental health issues for those in the law enforcement field. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams The best sacrifice Have you ever considered being a living organ donor? Jason stepped in when the stepfather of one of his best friends needed a kidney. Jason was 27 when he made the decision to be tested, along with a small group of seven friends. Jason was the one who matched, so the donation was made in 2014. Jason attributes his willingness to volunteer to growing up in a family of public servants, always learning to help and serve others in the community. To this day, Jason and the recipient remain great friends who celebrate together each January as the anniversary of the surgery rolls around. TWEET: ”Don’t give up. You’ll face roadblocks. Your dream today may not be the same dream tomorrow.” @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Don’t give up. You’ll face roadblocks. Your dream today may not be the same dream tomorrow.” For a bonus behind-the-scenes interview with Jason, visit www.aimeej21.com/patreon and become a donor.   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:35] How Jason envisioned his life when he was young [1:50] How people are satisfied to arrive at atypical jobs [2:55] The intimidation factor of being a dispatcher [4:40] Saying YES and saying NO [7:05] The mental health of first responders [8:17] Having insight to priorities and struggles [10:15] Why we’re harder on ourselves [11:30] How you can give someone else a chance [12:30] The most selfless act of all [13:50] Deciding to donate a kidney [18:20] How Jason hesitated in his decision [19:09] Encouraging others in the cause [22:45] How Jason stayed in his “lane” [25:17] Fears and concerns [28:25] Other organs that can be donated by living donors [29:40] Common misconceptions about living donors [31:25] What Jason would like to see change in the next 5 years [33:15] What Jason would change about his decision [34:12] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED Jason on Faceook Jason on Twitter Jason on Instagram Jason on LinkedIn   TWEETS YOU CAN USE:  TWEET: I don’t feel like I lost anything in being a kidney donor. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams TWEET: Being a police dispatcher was never on my career path growing up. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams TWEET: At every level of my job, I didn’t learn anything without making a mistake first. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams TWEET: It’s impossible to do everything as well as I want to. @j_nothdurft #chasingdreams

I would suggest going to different types of shows, the large expo ones, a venue tour or open house and a boutique show that is a more intimate setting that usually has a mock wedding set up with ceremony and reception decor. Pre-Register Pre-registering usually allows you to receive discount tickets so you can avoid the lines at the ticket box office on the day of the show. It also gets you free stuff! We all like free things. Research and Strategize Know what vendors you definitely want to see and find them on the layout map, which you can find on the show's website. Set-up a new email address, you will be inundated with emails after the show. Create address labels with your name, wedding date and new email address, every vendor you will meet will want this information either for them to send you newsletters or enter you into drawings for gifts or discounts. Bring a notebook and use your phone camera. Write down the vendors information, what you liked about them, what you didn't like about them and if they have their booth set up with something that catches your eye, take a photo. You are not the Only Star in this Show Please realize that you and your tribe are not the only focus for the vendors, they are looking for as many potential clients as possible. That is not to say that you are not important. If it is a vendor that you are interested in booking their services make sure that you talk to them, introduce yourself and tell them your needs. Gather their information, give them your information, on your address label that you created, and if possible, make an appointment for a one on one consultation. Go to the Seminars and Fashion Shows You paid good money for your ticket to this show so get your money's worth out of it. The producers usually have great keynote speakers and the bridal fashion shows are usually top of the line gowns with touches, like bouquets, from vendors in the show. The guest speakers will have great planning information and the fashion show will give you an idea of your likes and dislikes and how the dresses move while walking and such. You may like that mermaid cut gown, but if you can't walk well in it then it may not be for you. Last but not any way the least important… Wear Comfortable Shoes I know you want to look your best but you are going to be walking lots. Don't wear the 5-inch stilettos, your feet will be barking by the end of the day. If you want a good list of wedding shows and other great information please check out Here comes the Guide. They have a list of tons of wedding shows in all 50 states. You’re engaged, now what: * Sharing the engagement news * Engagement parties Yes or No * How to start planning your wedding Sharing the news ideas and when to tell * Important peeps/VIPs * Parents/Grandparents * Best Friends * Kids Ideas on how to share the news * Then Facebook, coworkers, social media AFTER your VIPs have been told. * T-shirts * Christmas ornaments * Cute Video * Photo/Graphic * Online engagement e-cards * Phone calls still work * Is texting allowed? 40: Transform Your Boundaries with Sarri Gilman

Relationship Alive!

It’s common these days to hear people talking about having healthy boundaries - but what does that even mean? How would you know what a healthy boundary looks like? How do you honor other people’s boundaries? And if you’re experiencing a breakdown - how do you get back on the right track, so that you know what your boundaries are, and so that they’re respected by the other people in your life. Today’s guest is Sarri Gilman, a therapist for 30 years who has also directed several non-profits, and the author of the book “Transform Your Boundaries”. In this book, Sarri Gilman explains exactly what your boundaries are, and what they aren’t, and gives you guidance about how to bring your boundaries, and yourself, back online. Here are the core topics that Sarri and I cover in this episode: YESSES and NOs.  Boundaries are at the core of all relationships- if you interact with humans, you need boundaries! What are boundaries? Boundaries are a collection of your yesses and your nos. We can navigate through layers of complexity and many difficult situations when we come back to a knowing about what our yesses and what our nos are. Boundary work is ongoing: As with so much in relationships, boundaries are not static entities. They change as we change, and vice versa. Forget about ever ‘mastering’ boundary setting - this is going to be a lifelong process! It takes time, and an investment in yourself too, to sort out your feelings so that you can get to know your own yesses, and nos. Of course there will be foggy and fuzzy situations, and grayness is a part of life, but the confusion cannot become an excuse to be uncertain of your boundaries. Instead, it means you may have to take extra time to check in with yourself. Self care is at the heart of boundary work- Boundaries - which we often think of as interactional and relational - all stem from self-awareness, and self-care. Start noticing how many times a day people ask you for something. Then notice how many times each day you have the chance to clarify what is a yes and what is a no. Tune into yourself - can you locate that knowing of what you need? To what extent do you follow through on this knowing? Ask yourself - am I giving myself what I need right now? Am I taking time each day for self-care activities? Am I drinking enough water? Am I picking up my guitar? My knitting? Have I taken a computer break and stretched? Tune into you, and learn what it is you need each day to feel well and okay on the inside. From this awareness, you can come to know your true yesses and nos, and gain a stronger voice and clearer compass for navigating conflict around boundaries. Where do you feel you are paying the price for not taking care of yourself? Not having healthy boundaries can lead to patterns of distraction, avoidance, and isolation. As you begin to increase your self-awareness around your yes and your no, you may begin to notice patterns of boundary avoidance, or compromise. So many of us have been conditioned to put others first, so that our boundaries are a response to what others need, rather than linked to self-care. Some common patterns of unhealthy boundary setting include workaholism, numbing out via internet, social isolation, as well as approval seeking. Do you find yourself looking for LOVE without looking for YOU? Are you so hungry to be loved/liked/approved of that you will do anything for this, without considering if it is actually good for you, or aligned with your real needs? There is a line in any of these patterns that we do that is healthy, and okay up to a certain point. We are all going to have times we need to distract ourselves, put others first, or feel a need to isolate, and yet, it is key to have a way to check back in with ourselves. When we lose ourselves we lose control of our behavior, and this can lead to depression. On the contrary, if we hold boundaries that are too rigid and firm, they become imprisoning for ourselves and our soul/spirit. What nurtures you? What is it that YOU need to feel alive, centered, and empowered? Tune into the very core needs you have on a daily and weekly basis, and make sure you are honoring them. Take an hour to read, time at the gym, a walk with a friend, a dinner date - these small acts of nurturance create the resilience, and self-compassion that makes us that much more open to our relationships. Boundaries help to bring ourselves closer to others. Although it may at first sound paradoxical, good boundary setting allows for more authentic intimacy and connection. This is true because setting boundaries is the result of, and the contributor to our knowing ourselves better, which in turn brings those around us closer. Whether with your family, your work relationships, or your primary partnership, learning healthy boundary setting will lead to increased truthfulness, trust, and depth! Scary, but worth it! Setting boundaries can be difficult and daunting. It can be especially hard if you are someone who has spent much of their life trying to care take of, or please those around you. What helps get through the immediate fear is looking towards the long term results and consequences. Not holding boundaries or following through on commitments with yourself has a huge price! We each have a spirit, or a part of us, that watches what we are doing all of the time - if it always sees you saying no to you, not following up on your own needs, then you may begin to feel depressed. Constantly saying no to ourselves, and trying to say yes to everyone else, can develop into depression, anger, and resentment. Resentment: Resentment is the clearest signal that your boundaries have been crossed. It comes from a feeling that someone failed to respect our boundary - but it is not their job to do so! It is our job to state our boundaries, and to make them clear and big. If someone is crossing your boundary, it likely means you have to make a bigger sign. The fear and intimidation of doing so should not be a barrier - it is temporary and ephemeral, unlike resentment which does not leave us quickly, and can stick with us so long it make us sick. By allowing our fear of saying no to dominate, we run the risk of carrying around resentment- and then we are left paying that price for a long while. Instead, choose to take the risk of the discomfort of a NO in the name of authenticity, connectedness, and a more honest way of being in relationship! It is your job to respect and care-take your own boundaries. No one else can do this for you. The art of saying NO: Once you have the courage and self-compassion to set a boundary, then it is your responsibility to do so with as much compassion for the other as you can. Many times our yesses and our nos come up with a lot of associated feelings - anger, frustration, entitlement, etc. Check in to see what level of emotional charge you are feeling, and if it is high, take steps (walk, journal, breathe...) to calm yourself enough so that you can state your boundary from a centered place. When we do so, it is better received than when we set a boundary with hot and high emotions. You may think that getting big and loud will help the other person see your boundary more clearly, but really it only distracts them, puts them in the defense, and leads to increased tension and conflict. Furthermore, with your emotions in check, you are more likely to feel grounded and have a ‘stand by it’ mentality that allows you to not be as affected or swayed by the (often) inevitable reaction you may get. It will help you stay committed to the boundary itself, without getting distracted or lost in all the feelings around it. How to best handle your fear of communicating a NO: It is common to be worried about how your boundary is going to be received - and yet, often this fear is based on an assumption we are holding. Acknowledge that you have some fear about what a no is going to mean to the other person, and share this! If you are someone who hates to disappoint people, you can take care of them and this feeling simultaneously by simply stating “I am really sorry if you find this disappointing…” before you share your no. Putting it right out on the table is a way of creating more understanding. And helps to create a bridge between the two parties so that they do not get too lost in the emotionality of the process. This connecting is critical when you share boundaries, especially within your romantic relationship as it helps to hold the container and the safety necessary so that the no does not feel like a rupture of attachment. If your no comes from an authentic, self-honoring place, then it is inherently important, even if uncomfortable, for your partner to know about. The deeper your awareness of this, the more resilient you can be in your stance and more capable of holding the boundary, while holding the temporary hurt or harm your partner feels. We want to get what we want. And we don’t like not getting it. You may find that people use anger and big emotion as a way to manipulate you to change your mind if you have stated a no, when they expected and wanted a yes. People ARE going to push up against you. Be ready for this- notice it and be okay with people having feelings about your inner boundaries. It is okay for people to not like it, or to be upset!  It is not a relationship breaker! Without feeding the drama, you can state something along the lines of “I understand that you are angry, and totally get why you are angry, and I am not going to change my mind. Let’s figure out together how else you can get what you need/want!” What to do if you suspect that your partner’s NO stems from fear or avoidance: If you do not understand or trust the motives behind your partner’s No, use this doubt and confusion as an invitation for more understanding. Ask them to tell you more about their No. Where does it come from? What brought them to the No? How is it important to them? This curiosity and compassion will help you understand the deeper place your partner is coming from, while also creating a culture and a conversation that can help any stuckness or fear your partner has that is motivating their No, allowing it to dissipate. When we feel comfortable and respected in our relationships, our boundaries can come from that authentic core needs place, rather than from a more reactive and rigid place. This conversation about boundaries provides a chance for intimacy and connection - enjoy it! Explore it! You ARE going to have a different yes and no than your partner. This understanding is critical in order to provide the flexibility and resilience necessary to get creative! The challenge is not to get on the same page, but rather how to prioritize and protect each other's needs without violating the other’s no. This process encourages creativity and spark! You CAN coexist with a values conflict if you are willing to expand the field a little bit, and start working together to find new solutions. Connect with your partner each day. Take a minimum of 20 minutes each day to check in with each other. Ask each other questions, and listen! How are you feeling about this/that? What are you thinking about? Is there anything I need to know? What is on your heart? Find out what your partner needs for their self-care, and ask more about it. How can I help you? How can I better encourage that for you? How can I support from my end? Frequent quality check-ins help to create an environment where boundary work can happen in a more effective and mutually empowering way! TRY THIS: In an effort to practice stating and receiving nos and yesses, you and your partner can take turns expressing to each other some things that you know your partner will say no to. Notice what it is like to receive a no. To state a no. Then try it with yesses. Feel free to laugh! This exercise is meant to help bring in some humor and take the charged energy out because once you can laugh with each other, you can more easily catch yourselves and turn towards regaining perspective. The Warrior Life - Overcoming The Mental and Physical Battles of Life

Let me paint a daily scenario I have… “I need to lose weight, can you help me do that?” “Absolutely! Here is a diet plan for you to follow, that if you do, you will for sure lose weight.” “Awesome! I will totally follow this! Thank you so much!!” ———————————————Two Weeks Later——————————— “How's it going? Have you lost any weight yet?” “No…” “How come?” “I tried to follow the diet, but I couldn't. My sister had a birthday and there was cake. My co-workers wanted to go out for happy hour and the drinks were half off. I decided to have a cheat meal and ate a whole pizza. I just couldn't stick to the diet.” Have you ever felt like this person? Perhaps you had the best intentions of sticking to a diet and couldn't. The History of the Christian Church

This episode is titled “In the Low Countries.”Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxemburg are referred to as “the Low Countries.” The get this name because laying along the coast NW of Germany and NE of France, they are at or slightly below sea level. That and there's not really much in the way of mountains. There are some low hills, but for the most part the region today called Benelux is pretty flat.During the Reformation, as in most of northern Europe, Protestantism in the low countries gained adherents early on. In 1523, in Antwerp, the first two Protestant martyrs were burned. From that point on, there's solid evidence Protestantism made headway across the region. But the political situation there hitched the advance of Protestantism to a long and bitter struggle for independence.Near the mouth of the Rhine River, there was a region known as the Seventeen Provinces, in what today is the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. These territories were part of the holdings of the Hapsburgs. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V was born and raised there. So he was well-liked by the people, and under his rule the Seventeen Provinces grew close -er. That is,c loser than they'd been before, but not in fact, close.Their political unity was fragile since each province had a unique identity, traditions, and ruling nobles. Cultural unity was lacking since the French-speaking south and Dutch-speaking north were at ever at odds. Then there was the problem of ecclesiastical complexity with bishops vying with one another other over who's domain was the most prestigious. In 1555, Charles placed the Seventeen Provinces under the rule of his son Philip. He assumed the young man would continue his rule of slow-paced unification. But it was under Philip that what little unity there was cam apart. The low countries honored Charles because of his Flemish roots. Flemish was his mother-tongue. But Philip was raised in Spain. Both his language and outlook were Spanish. In 1556, having received the crown of Spain, he became Philip II, and made it clear his most important possession was the Iberian Peninsula. The Low Countries were put at the service of Spain and her interests. This provoked the resentment of the Seventeen Provinces, who resisted Philip's efforts to complete their unification, and to treat it as part of the hereditary possessions of the Spanish crown.Even before the Reformation broke out in the Low Countries, there'd been a strong movement toward reform. This was the birthplace of the Brethren of the Common Life, and of the greatest of humanist reformers, Erasmus of Rotterdam. One of the major themes of the Brethren was the reading of Scripture in the native language of the people. So the Protestant Reformation found fertile ground in the Low Countries. It wasn't long before Lutheran preachers entered the area, gaining large numbers of converts. Then the Anabaptists made headway. Last, there was an influx of Calvinist preachers from Geneva, France, and southern Germany. Eventually, these Calvinist preachers were most successful, and Calvinism became the main brand of Protestantism. That's not to say the advance of the movement went without opposition. Charles V took strong measures against the spread of Protestantism there. He issued edicts against it, in particular against Anabaptists. The frequency with which these edicts followed one another is proof of their failure to stem the tide of Protestant conversions. Tens of thousands died for their faith. Leaders were burned, their followers beheaded, and many women were buried alive. But, in spite of such punishments, the Reformation continued its advance. Toward the end of Charles's reign there was growing opposition to his religious policies. But Charles was a popular ruler, and many in Central Europe were convinced Protestants were heretics who deserved their punishment.Philip, on the other hand, never popular in the Low Countries, prompted even greater ill will through a combination of folly, stubbornness, and hypocrisy. When he returned to Spain and left the Provinces under the regency of his half-sister Margaret of Parma, he sought to strengthen her authority by quartering Spanish troops in the Low Countries. These troops were sustained financially by the locals. Clashes soon developed between the Spanish soldiers and the natives, who chafed under the presence of foreign troops. Since there was no war requiring their presence, the only possible explanation was that Philip doubted their loyalty. And if they were going to be assumed to be disloyal, why not actually BE disloyal? To this was added the appointment of new bishops given inquisitorial powers. But the locals said, “Wait! What? We've heard about the Spanish Inquisition. We do NOT want that here! NO way, NO How! Our King isn't treating us like citizens; He's treating us like the worst kind of enemy.”Philip and his regent Margaret paid no attention to their most loyal subjects. William, Prince of Orange, a close friend of Philip's father, and the Count of Egmont, who'd given outstanding military service to Charles, were made members of the Council of State. But they were mere figureheads who were never consulted.  Philip and Margaret took advice instead from a foreign advisor named Bishop Granvelle, whom the people of the Low Countries blamed for every injustice and humiliation they suffered. After repeated protests, the king recalled Granvelle. But it soon became clear Granvelle had really only carried out Philip's instructions. Philip was to blame. The leaders of the Seventeen Provinces sent the Count of Egmont to Spain to carry their grievances to the King. Philip received him with honors and promised change. Egmont returned home, confident things would turn around. But when he opened the letter from the King to be read to the other leaders, it contradicted everything the king had promised. Philip had already sent Regent Margaret the decrees of the Counter Reformation Council of Trent. Protestantism was to be rejected. All who opposed them were to be executed. These orders caused massive unrest. The magistrates of the Seventeen Provinces had no mind to execute the vast number of their fellow citizens the king decreed should die. In response to Philip's commands, hundreds of the nobility and joined in a petition to Margaret that such policies not be implemented. Margaret received them, and when she evidenced signs of an agitation so great her attendants feared she might have a seizure, one of her courtiers calmed her by calling the nobles “beggars.”That label captured the imagination of local patriots. If their oppressors thought them beggars, they'd bear that name proudly. The leather bag of a beggar became the symbol of rebellion. Under it the movement, until then limited to the nobility and merchant class, took root among the entire populace. Before coming to outright warfare, the movement took on a religious overtone. There were frequent outdoor meetings in which Protestantism and opposition to the authorities were preached under the protection of armed Beggars. In fear of greater disturbances if they didn't allow them, Regent Margaret's troops allowed these meetings. Then roving bands of iconoclasts invaded churches, overturned altars, and destroyed images and symbols of the Roman Church. Finally, the magistrates appealed to William of Orange. Thanks to his pleas, and those of his supporters, the violence dimmed, and the iconoclasts ceased their attacks. The Inquisition was suspended and a limited freedom of worship was permitted. But Philip was not the kind of ruler to be swayed by his subjects' opposition. He loudly declared he had no desire to be a “lord of heretics.” Appealing to the old principle that there was no need to keep faith with the unfaithful he set about to re-assert control of those troublesome low countries. While promising to abide by the agreements reached in the Provinces and pardon the rebels, he raised an army with which to force his will on the Low Countries. William of Orange, aware of the king's duplicity, advised his friends to join in armed resistance. They foolishly put their trust in the king's promises while William followed his own advice and withdrew to Germany. The storm arrived quickly. Early in 1567, the duke of Alba invaded the low countries with an army of Spanish and Italian troops. The king gave him powers similar to Regent Margaret who became a figurehead. Alba was the true ruler. His mission was to obliterate all rebellion and heresy.Protestants were condemned for their heresy, and Catholics for not having been sufficiently firm in resisting heresy. Even to express doubt as to Alba's authority was high treason. The same charge was brought against any who opposed the reorganization of the church, or declared the provinces had rights and privileges the king couldn't overturn. So numerous were those put to death under these ordinances chroniclers of the time speak of the stench in the air, and of hundreds of bodies hanging from trees along the roads. The counts of Egmont and Horn were arrested and brought to trial. Since William of Orange was not available, Alba captured his 15-year-old son and sent him to Spain. William responded by investing all his financial resources in raising an army, mostly German, with which he invaded the Low Countries. But Alba defeated him repeatedly and, in retaliation, ordered the execution of Egmont and Horn.Alba was in full command of the situation when the rebels received support from an unexpected quarter. Orange granted licenses to privateers, in the hope they'd harass Alba's communication and supply lines back to Spain. These pirate Beggars of the Sea achieved a measure of organization Philip's naval forces couldn't contain. Queen Elizabeth of England gave them support by allowing them to sell their booty in English ports. In a brilliant maneuver, the Sea-Beggars captured the city of Brill and, after that, their ongoing success made them a legend that inspired the patriots who resisted on land. Several cities declared themselves in favor of William of Orange, who once again invaded the provinces, this time with French support. But the French also were dealing in treachery, and William was approaching Brussels when he learned of the Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day. That put an end to collaboration between Protestants and the French crown. Lacking funds and military support, William was forced to disband his mercenary troops.Alba's vengeance was terrible. His armies took city after city, and repeatedly broke the terms of surrender. Prisoners were killed for no other reason than revenge, and several cities that had resisted were put to the torch. Women, children, and the elderly were indiscriminately killed along with the rebels. Soon every rebel stronghold was in Alba's hands. It was only on the sea that the rebels remained strong. The Sea Beggars continually defeated the Spanish, at one point capturing their admiral. This made it difficult for Alba to receive supplies and funds. The Spanish troops began showing signs of mutiny. Tired of the long struggle, and bitter because Spain didn't send the resources he required, Alba asked to be appointed elsewhere. The new Spanish general, Luis de Zúñiga y Requesens, had the wisdom to exploit the religious differences among the rebels. He sought a separate peace with the Catholics of the southern provinces, driving a wedge between them and the Protestants, who were more numerous in the north. Up to that point, the religious question was just a minor one among many in what was really a national rebellion against foreign rule. William of Orange, the leader of the uprising, was a liberal Catholic until his exile in Germany. Then in 1573 he declared himself a Calvinist. But Requesens's policies underscored the religious element of the struggle, neutralizing the Catholic provinces of the south. The Protestant cause was desperate as its armies were repeatedly defeated. Its only hope was the Beggars of the Sea. The main crisis came at the Siege of Leiden. The important trade center declared itself for Protestantism. The Spanish surrounded it. An army sent by William of Orange to break the siege was defeated, and 2 of William's brothers were killed. All was lost when William, whose enemies called him William the Sly, suggested that the dikes be opened, flooding the land around Leiden. This meant the destruction of many years of hard work, and the loss of a great deal of farmable land. But the citizens agreed. In spite of a shortage of food, the besieged continued their resistance during the four months it took the sea to reach Leiden. Riding in on the flood, the Sea Beggars also arrived, shouting they'd rather be Turkish than Popish. Lacking naval support, the Spanish were forced to abandon the siege. At that moment, Requesens died. His troops, having neither leader nor pay, mutinied, and set about sacking the cities of the Catholic south, which were easier prey than those of the Protestant north. This served to reunite the inhabitants of the Seventeen Provinces, who, in 1576, agreed to the Pacification of Ghent. This alliance among the provinces made it clear what was at stake was national freedom, not religious differences. The agreement was hailed by William of Orange, who'd repeatedly argued religious dogmatism and sectarian intolerance were an obstacle to the unity and freedom of the low countries. The next governor was Don Juan de Austria, an illegitimate son of Charles V, so half-brother of Philip II. Although he was one of the most admired military heroes in Christendom for his defeat of the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto, he was not allowed to enter Brussels until he'd agreed to the stipulations of the Pacification of Ghent. But Philip II would not give up the struggle. A new army was sent into the region, and once again the southern provinces abandoned the struggle. Then the northern provinces, against the advice of William of Orange, formed a separate league for the defense of their faith and freedom. The struggle dragged on for years. Though they were firmly in control of the south, the Spanish could not conquer the north. In 1580, Philip Il issued a proclamation promising a reward of 25,000 crowns and a title of nobility to anyone who would kill William the Sly. William and his supporters responded with a formal declaration of independence. Three years later, after several unsuccessful attempts, an assassin on a quest for the reward was able to kill William. And once again, Philip proved untrue to his promise, at first refusing to pay the reward, then paying only a portion of it.Philip hoped William's death would put an end to the rebellion. But William's nineteen year old son Maurice, proved to be a better general than his father, and led his troops in several victorious campaigns. In 1607, almost a decade after the death of Philip II, Spain decided her losses in the struggle weren't worth the effort and cost of continuing the war, and a truce was signed. By then, the majority of the people in the northern provinces were Calvinist, and many in the north equated their faith with their nationalist loyalty, while the southern provinces remained Catholic. Eventually, religious, economic, and cultural differences led to the formation of three countries; the Netherlands, which were Protestant, and Belgium and Luxembourg, both Catholic.
