Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is kickass bassist, singer, songwriter, bandleader, musical omnivore and big-time Phishhead, Karina Rykman. If you've been paying attention to the jamband and jamband-adjacent scene for any time over the past 5 years or so, or maybe a bit longer than that, I imagine that you've heard of, seen the same of, or been lucky enough to hear Karina Rykman. She performs live with her guitarist and effects-man Adam November and drummer Chris Corsico as a psychedelic bass-led power trio that will blow you away. For those of you who are on a strict Phish diet and may not be familiar with Karina, you should be aware that she has played bass onstage with Mike Gordon in several different configurations and, as of this episode, is preparing to open for him in New Orleans during Jazz Fest. In addition, she has roots with Trey Anastasio and his family going all the way back to her middle school days, and Trey co-produced her debut album, Joyride.Karina and I cover a lot of topics in today's conversation, including our experiences in New York City, her influences in terms of music and life, what it was like to record her album, and her upcoming gig at Webster Hall in New York City on Saturday, May 10. But fear not: there are Phish references and chatter about the band sprinkled throughout our conversation. Also, it wouldn't be an Attendance Bias episode if the guest didn't pick out a special Phish experience, and Karina chose a doozie: October 30, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City where Phish truly blew everyone's minds with a Tweezerfest that weaved bits and pieces of Led Zeppelin songs throughout. But there's so much more to it than that. Let's join Karina to talk about songwriting craft, rocks off boat cruises, and the best place in Manhattan for smoked salmon as we discuss October 30, 2010 in Atlantic City, and much more.

Released on October 8, 1980 by Sire Records, the band's fourth album. Last Heads album produced by Brian Eno. Phish debuted the tune on October 31, 1996 at the Phish Halloween show at the Omni in Atlanta, GA, covered Remain In Light as their Musical CostumePlayed 62 times overallThey really jam it out in a way the Talking Heads did not. Always well received and this show was no differentLast played on August 4, 2023 at MSG, 7 shows ago SHOW #1 AlbuquerquePHISH : Albuquerque : [NEIL YOUNG] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/13/2023 - YouTube:50 – 2:18October 13, 2023, First set, out of a killer Ghost and into Saw It Again. Beautiful Neil Young tune from Tonight's The Night released in 1975The song sees Young returning to a theme that has filled his music from very early on: the vapidity of fame. It's something he seems to struggle with even more than most other musicians. Or, at least, it's something he's chosen to sing about more often than most. It may in fact be the most common theme of all his music, besides obvious stuff like heartbreak and love.In "Albuquerque," Young is thinking about renting a car and driving from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Santa Fe, just to be alone and "independent from the scene." He never tells us why he's in Albuquerque to begin with, but he does tell us he wants to roll a joint and rent a car and stop to eat some "fried eggs and country ham."The "country ham" bit is kind of interesting, because country ham is a food popular in the southeast, not so much in the southwest. It's probably just a simple oversight on Young's part, but it may also reveal another common thread in Young's music: the escape into rural simplicity as a cure for the craziness and fakeness of modern day life.Phish first played this song on July 26, 1998 at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas, TX.Played a total of 17 timesLast played on June 11, 2011 at Merriweather Post Pavillion outside of D.C., gap of 457 shows SHOW #2: Spanish MoonPHISH : Spanish Moon : [LITTLE FEAT] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/15/2023 - YouTube:50 – 2:05October 15, 2023, Second set out of Pebbles and Marbles and into A Wave of Hope Little Feat cover, one of their most popular tunes. From the album, Feats Don't Fail Me Now, released in 1974 "Spanish Moon" was written and sung by guitarist Lowell George, who was a creative powerhouse in the early years of Little Feat. The song is about a fictional place called the Spanish Moon - a seedy club with whiskey and bad cocaine, but a girl singer that made it worth it. There are many dangers at the Spanish Moon, but the ones likely to do you in are the women.Lowell George was an excellent storyteller and created the Spanish Moon from his imagination, but he lived through the vices he describes in the song, especially cocaine. Around this time, his addictions were starting to overpower him, his health started failing, and he developed hepatitis. Feats Don't Fail Me Now was the last Little Feat album where he was clearly the leader; his contributions to the band slowly tailed off, and in 1979 he released a solo album. While on tour supporting it, he died of a heart attack at 34. Phish debuted it live on October 31, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City when Phish's musical costume was Waiting For Columbus, the famed Little Feat live album.Phish has performed it live only 3 timesLast before this show was on February 21, 2019 at Barcelo Maya Beach, Riviera Maya, Qunitana Roo, Mexico, gap of 170 shows SHOW #3: No QuarterPHISH : No Quarter : [LED ZEPPELIN] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/14/2023 - YouTube1:53 – 3:25October 14, 2023, Second Set, out of Everything's Right, into Fluffhead "No Quarter" is a song by Led Zeppelin that appears on their 1973 album Houses of the Holy. It was written by John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant. The song became a centerpiece at all Led Zeppelin concerts thereafter, until their final tour. It appears in both the film versions and both live album versions of The Song Remains the Same, released in 1976 and expanded in 2007. It appeared once more in 1994 on Page and Plant's reunion album as the title track. It also appears on Led Zeppelin's 2012 live album Celebration Day, which documented their 2007 reunion performance at the O2 Arena in London. It was re-released on the deluxe edition of Houses of the Holy. The title is derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent and from the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished. This theme is captured in several of the song's lyrics. Like "Immigrant Song" two albums prior, it evokes imagery from the Vikings and Norse mythology, with lyrics such as “the winds of Thor are blowing cold.”Record producer Rick Rubin remarked on the song's structure, "It takes such confidence to be able to get really quiet and loose for such a long time. [Led] Zeppelin completely changed how we look at what popular music can be." Phish debuted the song on June 1, 2011 at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ Phish has performed the song 19 times Last before this show was on April 23, 2023 at the Hollywood Bowl, gap of 32 shows SHOW #4 IzabellaPHISH : Izabella : [JIMI HENDRIX] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/13/2023 - YouTube:35 – 1:14October 13, 2023, Encore Written by Jimi Hendrix, released on Band of Gypsys, released April 8, 1970After Hendrix disbanded the Jimi Hendrix Experience in early 1969, he formed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows to fulfill his contract to play Woodstock. This was one of the new songs that he introduced at the festival, after which the guitarist was eager to perfect a studio version. Hendrix recruited bassist Billy Cox, who had played with him while they were in the army and his drummer friend Buddy Miles, for a new ensemble, Band of Gypsys. They recorded this as the B-side to his "Stepping Stone" single for Reprise, but it was quickly pulled after Hendrix complained about the mix. The Band of Gypsys made their live debut at the Fillmore East on New Year's Eve, 1969 and this song was played during their first set. Phish debuted the song on June 13, 1997 at The S.F.X. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, released on Exile on Main Street (1971)Exile on Main St. has grown to be appreciated with time, and this is an example of a song that become more popular later on. In a 2003 interview, Mick Jagger explained: "On the Forty Licks tour, when we were preparing the set list for a show in Yokohama, Chuck Leavell suggested we play 'Loving Cup,' the ballad from Exile on Main St. I didn't want to play the tune and I said, Chuck, this is going to die a death in Yokohama. I can't even remember the bloody song, and no one likes it. I've done it loads of times in America, it doesn't go down that well, it's a very difficult song to sing, and I'm fed up with it! Chuck went, Stick in the mud! so I gave in and put it in the set-list. Lo and behold, we went out, started the song and they all began applauding... Which just proves how, over time, some of these songs acquire a certain existence, or value, that they never had when they first came out. People will say, What a wonderful song that was, when it was virtually ignored at the time it was released." >> Phish debuted the song on February 3, 1993 at the Portland Expo in Portland, MaineInteresting because they did eventually cover Exile On Main Street as a Halloween musical costume on October 31, 2009 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, part of Phish Festival 8.Clearly one of their favorite covers, and a crowd pleaser, played 148 times.Last played before this show on August 5, 2023 at MSG, gap of 13 shows

Tim Kachuriak is the founder and Chief Innovation and Optimization Officer for NextAfter https://www.nextafter.com/, a fundraising research lab and consulting firm that works with businesses, nonprofits, and NGOs to help them grow their resource capacity. By his own admission, Tim is not a behavioral scientist, but what we love about Tim’s work is that he is using knowledge and research from the world of behavioral science and applying it to improve the efficiency of gift giving for nonprofit organizations. And not only does he use behavioral science techniques, he tests the theories in the nonprofit sector and generously publishes the findings on the NextAfter website https://www.nextafter.com/research/. In our conversation with Tim, he underscores the need for thinking about value proposition, a term widely used in the digital marketing world, but rarely thought of in terms of nonprofit organizations. He argues that potential donors are constantly weighing up the perceived value vs. the perceived cost of donating their money. Tim also brings up the idea of reducing friction for donors: how can the giving experience be improved to make donating money a more seamless transaction. And we couldn’t help but see the parallels with the infamous new behavioral science book NOISE coming out later this month (Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment by Kahneman, Sibony and Sunstein, 2021 https://amzn.to/3heyr5r). There are many reasons why we donate to nonprofits; emotional reward, belonging, anger, guilt (or as Tim positively reframes it - gratitude!). Understanding these motivations is a huge part of Tim’s work and why, as behavioral scientists, we are fascinated to understand the research he has conducted around donations. Welcome to the fourth mini-episode of Attendance Bias! Mini-episodes feature a breakdown of a single song or jam from a show that I’ve attended. I’ll pick a song or jam for any given reason—it was the highlight of the show, it meant something special to me, it's widely renown--who knows? Mini-episodes are posted on a bi-weekly basis in between full episodes of Attendance Bias, when a guest and I will go over a full Phish show.Today's episode focuses on "Twist," played on 11/1/13 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This show was the second of three nights of the band's 2013 Halloween run. The vibe going into the venue was strange. The previous night's Wingsuit set really knocked us off our rocker, as this was the first time that Phish did not play a full album by another band for Halloween. Rather, they played an entire set--80 minutes long--of new material. Even though the third set of 10/31 was excellent, things didn't quite feel the same afterwards."Twist" from the next night changed all that for me. It felt as though Phish, and the audience, had a lot of steam to blow off after the tension of the Halloween set, and "Twist" blew that steam right off. It has everything: exploration, triumphant bliss-rock, "Under Pressure" quotes, and abstract dissonance. It's since become one of my favorite jams.AUD recording for this episode: Twist

Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show, featuring UFC 53 ‘Heavy Hitters’. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado and Vic Rodriguez of Bloody Elbow as they relive UFC 53 this week, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. On June 4th, 2005, UFC 53, 'Heavy Hitters', an eight-fight card, chock full of finishes with only one decision on the entire card went down from Trump's Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This was a great card, which featured the classic commentating talent of Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan. So, the main event that night showcased Heavyweight, Andrei 'The Pitbull' Arlovski, who had won five of his total of seven UFC fights at the time, having lost to Pedro Rizzo and Ricco Rodriguez in 2001 & 2002, meant he was on a four-fight winning streak. He was up against an up-and-comer in Justin Eilers, who came into the octagon for his third UFC bout that evening, off a loss to Paul Buentello just a few months earlier in February. Arlovski would continue his win-streak, defeating Eilers via KO/TKO - Punches at just 4:10 into Round 1. Also on the card, the co-main event featured Rich 'Ace' Franklin, who was on his seventh UFC fight, coming off an exciting win over Ken Shamrock on The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale that April, up against the more experienced Evan Tanner, who was on a four-fight win streak; despite that success he still succumbed to Ace via a KO/TKO - Doctor Stoppage at 3:25 in Round 4 out of 5. In addition to that brutal finish, we saw Forrest Griffin swiftly submit Bill Mahood in only 2:18 of Round 1 with a slick Rear Naked Choke, and the opening prelim bout back in '05 featured the other Diaz brother... Nick Diaz, devastating Koji Oishi with a KO/TKO via Punches at just 1:24 of Round 1. Main Card: * MAIN: Andrei Arlovski DEF. Justin Eilers by KO/TKO (Punches) at 4:10 of Round 1 of 5: Heavyweight (non-title match) * Karo Parisyan DEF. Matt Serra via Unanimous Decision: Welterweight * Co-Main: Rich Franklin DEF. Evan Tanner by Doctor Stoppage (KO/TKO) at 3:25 of Round 4 out of 5: Middleweight * Forrest Griffin DEF. Bill Mahood by submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 2:18 of round 1 of 3: Light Heavyweight * Paul Buentello DEF. Kevin Jordan by submission (Guillotine Choke) at 4:00 of round 1 of 3: Heavyweight Prelims: * Nate Quarry DEF. Shonie Carter by KO/TKO (Punches) at 2:37 of round 1 of 3: Middleweight * David Loiseau DEF. Charles McCarthy by KO/TKO (Spinning Back Kick) at 2:10 of round 2 of 3: Middleweight * Nick Diaz DEF. Koji Oishi by KO/TKO (Punches) at 1:24 of round 1 of 3: Welterweight If you enjoyed our show, "heart" us here on SC, or give us a “like”, share & subscribe over on one of our other BE Presents Podcast Channels: YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCFoX81d3fNHrcUckyQdRzLQ iTunes & Apple TV: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/blood…&i=1000421882228 Google Play: play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#…m6qmvqn4yqvivru74 iHeartRadio: www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Blood…Presents-30639274 Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/55S2dpKYVqn…kESkWZigLNnEg1ugn Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/podcast/bloody-e…esents?refid=stp TuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Sports--Recreation-Podcasts/Bloody-Elbow-Presents-p1190843/ OverCast: overcast.fm/itunes984162015/bloody-elbow-presents Player FM: player.fm/series/bloody-elbow-presents ... whichever one happens to be your listening platform of choice. Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Famer Arturo "Thunder" Gatti, who died in 2009 under suspicious circumstances, celebrated what would have been his 47th birthday on April 15. Mike Sciarra, a close friend and brother of Arturo, remembers the boxing great and will share some stories with us tonight. Since Arturo's death in 2009 (or as Sciarra puts it "murder"), Mike Sciarra continues to drive 3-hours to Atlantic City---every year, with no fanfare--- to place blue and white ribbons on light poles on the Boardwalk across from Boardwalk Hall where Gatti fought many of his most memorable fights. How did a small concert with a very checkered past, get booked in the LARGE Boardwalk Hall? Was it sharp negotiating by the producer? Was it the lack of concert savvy by the CRDA? Or was it something else? Listen to the ACprimetime Radio Podcast. We talk with Amanda Thomas of Boardwalk Entertainment. Amanda Thomas of Boardwalk Entertainment Michael Salvanto of Songbird Entertainment teamed up with North Jersey cousin Nick Conti to present a Boardwalk Hall concert on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The line-up is WAR, Asia featuring John Payne, and Journey former lead vocalist, Steve Augeri. This show was originally slated for Bader Field. But that fizzled. The triple-bill was also scheduled to take place in Wildwood, but was cancelled at the last minute. Who's at fault? What's the real reason for the cancellation? Wildwood commissioner Pete Byron, said he was 'kept in the dark' about the status of the Songbird Entertainment concert, produced by Michael Salvanto. Salvanto's explanation of past concert mis-steps were smoothed over on WOND Radio on Thursday afternoon. But many listeners weren't buying what Salvanto & the fast-talking, radio host were selling. More fact checking to follow. Back on March 22, 2017, Atlantic City Council voted to give Songbird Entertainment a license to use Bader Field for 5 concerts. None of those planned shows happened. 3rd ward Atlantic City Councilman Kaleem Shabazz was not happy with the Salvanto experience. Snookered? Hoodwinked? Bamboozled? Or just poor vetting and escrow terms / conditions on part of the city? Some were pleasantly surprised, others were downright shocked... that Salvanto & Songbird Entertainment were able to procure the 12,000 seat main arena of Boardwalk Hall for this cool....but really small show that might sell 3,000 tix. Might is the operative word here. Are Bar Mitzvahs next at Boardwalk Hall? How did this smaller show get OK'ed to play the BIG room at Boardwalk Hall? A show that was already cancelled 2 times before. A sign of things to come for Boardwalk Hall? The CRDA is desperate to do ANYTHING with Boardwalk Hall? Not ONE person at the CRDA thought this smelled kinda funny? Bringing in a wider variety of shows, producers and promoters. Less reliance on the expensive & questionable ROI deal with concert promoter Live Nation? With all that CRDA money being poured into Boardwalk Hall repairs & upgrades, it's time for that great venue to be managed & run as a visitor & revenue driver.....not just a CRDA money pit & pet project that keeps running in the red. Maybe the CRDA should have allocated some of those Boardwalk Hall funds....to safety & crime reduction in that Florida Ave neighborhood? Concert co-producer Nick Conti, plans to open Choice Bar n Grill soon at 470 Albany Ave in Atlantic City. (across from Skate Zone) Selvanto says: “that if it wasn’t with the help of Nick Conti, and Choice Bar & Grill, this concert would not be possible. Conti is a long time resident of Atlantic City, and business owner. NOTE: The CRDA board of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority recently inked a $7 Million deal to attract larger events to Boardwalk Hall and the Convention Center. The CRDA will team with Comcast NBC-Universal and William Morris Endeavor Entertainment to bring “destination events” to the two properties. Spectra by Comcast Spectacor, the company that manages Boardwalk Hall, has recently snubbed the local Yellow Cab Company & Jitney drivers. Spectra named Lyft its official ride-sharing service.

Flushing more money? Some topics we cover on the FEB 22 edition of ACprimetime Radio podcast: Bart Blatstein is Mr. 'Buy & Hold'. Smart vulture investor, not so hot business operator. See: Playground Pier. CRDA $2 million toilet upgrade for Boardwalk Hall. More money being foolishly flushed? How to make AC more business friendly. Streamline permitting process ( AC Councilman Jesse Kurtz on Dan Klein Radio show ) Councilman Jesse Kurtz: encourage street fairs, festivals. The struggle to make Atlantic City more business friendly. Streamline & simply permitting process. Remove unneeded red tape. Less paperwork. Encourage more events in Atlantic city. Event promoter. LISTEN > Dan Klein WOND Radio show: shouldn’t we entice producers to come in? Am I missing something? Chad Minnes is best known for his Lacey Cleaning company. And with that success, is able to invest $$ in SWFpro.com; a professional wrestling show that draws 1,000+ to these family friendly events. Minnes wants to bring SWF to Atlantic City this Summer. How many hoops will he need to jump thru? How many diff departments will need to give the OK? City, state, CRDA, mercantile, license & inspections? New, but empty strip of retail stores next to Boardwalk Hall will stay vacant for the foreseeable future. TOLL BROTHERS (developer) is already looking to sell that property....just one year after completion. Can CRDA exert influence on TOLL BROTHERS...to use properties for ART SHOWS...or other 'pop-up' stores for the summer? CRDA sadly said 'no'. Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has approved spending $2 million to upgrade four sets of out-of-service bathrooms at Boardwalk Hall. Renovation of eight bathrooms, not used in long time. If you are going to have a world-class facility, you can’t tell them that the bathrooms are unusable Project involves the pipes and other infrastructure. It’s not just fixing the bathroom.” Blatstein’s “multifaceted entertainment destination with art, music and food” for Garden Pier. Former volleyball court, Tower pitched a $40 million “multi-use event center”. Blatstein bought lots using name: A.C. Main Street Renaissance.

It’s no secret. Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian is not a fan of Miss America. Listen to ACprimetime Radio> Oh sure, he’ll be on stage with the ladies for photo ops. The bow tied guy will even get front row center seats inside Boardwalk Hall for the pageant…..but he’s NOT a fan of Miss A. Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian is also member of the CRDA; Casino Reinvestment Authority, which is funded by the casinos….who typically don't like Miss America either. Why? Those 'types' are less likely to gamble. They hog up too many casino hotel rooms. How dare they. CRDA declined opportunity to have Atlantic City featured on ABC-TV's New Year's Eve telecast that reaches 59 million viewers. The ( CRDA & Dick Clark Productions/Miss America ) agreement rewarded Atlantic City with significant new broadcast television exposure, social media integration with the organization and retains a truly iconic event in Atlantic City,” said Robert Mulcahy, chairman of the CRDA board. Some, including Mayor Don Guardian, thought the money might better be spent elsewhere. AC Fumbles Marketing Opportunity....AGAIN. "Though we hoped to sponsor a New Year’s Eve performance at Boardwalk Hall this year, scheduling conflicts and other considerations have redirected our focus to the 2017 concert calendar."

Miss America 2016 Will the Miss America organization re-sign with Atlantic City? She already inked a new 3 year deal with the ABC-TV network, based on the one million extra viewers this past year. Yeah. The ratings were that good. Now it's time to lock up another 3 years in keeping this historic event here at Boardwalk Hall. Will the CRDA cough up $3 million? We hope so. We also hope Miss A will use a casino showroom for the preliminary events. No need to burn through so much cash using historic Boardwalk Hall for the sparsely attended, but highly entertaining, pre-lims. During a recent ASK THE MAYOR show, Harry Hurley of WPG Talk Radio 1450 chatted up Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian. The topic of Miss America came up. Click & listen to a few clips.
Our conversation with Johnathon Banks who trains Wladimir Klitschko. Wladimir Klitschko fights 2012 - Banks stopped undefeated top contender Seth Mitchell, 25-1-1 (19KO’s), on Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the second round at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on HBO World Championship Boxing. Dropping Mitchell three times in the second round, referee Eddie Cotton called a halt to the destruction at the 2:37 mark of the second stanza. Wrote ESPN’s Dan Rafael, “Maybe some things are just meant to be. The script couldn’t have been better written for Banks in his major upset if a screenwriter had taken on the task. He was supposed to fight Mitchell in July, but the fight was postponed when Mitchell suffered a hand injury in his exciting third-round knockout win against Chazz Witherspoon in April and couldn’t be ready in time. It was around the time that the fight was postponed that the late Emanuel Steward, the Hall of Fame trainer and HBO announcer, first became ill. Steward had taken Banks under his wing when he was a 15-year-old amateur. Banks learned to box from Steward, spent time living with him and considered him a father figure. When Steward died in late October, his No. 1 fighter, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, needed a trainer for his Sept. 10 title defense against Mariusz Wach and he turned to Banks, who had been in Klitschko’s training camps for years with Steward.” “So Banks was training Klitschko for his eventual win against Wach at the same time that he was preparing to fight Mitchell. While in Klitschko’s camp in Austria, Banks, 30, of Detroit, was doing four training sessions ...
