We've had Cocaine Bear - and now we have the cocaine boat. On Tuesday, over 2.2 tonnes of cocaine was seized in a joint operation between the Army Ranger Wing, the Irish Navy, the Garda National-Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and Revenue. In a dramatic operation, they halted the MV Matthew vessel off the Cork coast, in what is a major blow to organised crime. To give us an insight into a stunning 24 hours in Irish policing, Ciaran Bradley is joined by the Irish Daily Star and Irish Mirror's Crime and Defence Editor, Michael O'Toole. It's the weekend, that means it's time for a new mentor. This week, we have a special friend of mine to teach us about the unlimited power of mindset. Andy Mackin served in the Irish Navy for 21 years before embarking on a second career as an entrepreneur. Mackin Talent is now a commercial powerhouse with offices all over the world and turning over millons each month. His growth since then has been spectacular but why I really clicked with Andy was his outlook on life and the power of mindset. Today he gives us a short lesson on improving mindset and he proves why there is no such thing as a typical entrepreneur. Ceithre shoitheach eile de chuid na Rúise feicthe amach ón chósta. The Defense Forces of Ireland have confirmed that four more Russian vessels, including a warship, have been seen off the coast of Ireland. Tá sé dearbhaithe ag Óglaigh na hÉireann go bhfacthas ceithre shoitheach eile de chuid na Rúise, long chogaidh ina measc, amach ó chósta na hÉireann. This is the latest situation since commercial and military vessels began to enter Irish waters. Seo an cor is déanaí ó thosaigh soithigh tráchtála agus míleata ag teacht isteach in uiscí na hÉireann. The ship Admiral Grigorovich, a Russian frigate, is among those that entered Ireland's exclusive economic zone earlier this week. Tá an long Admiral Grigorovich, frigéad Rúiseach, ina measc siúd a tháinig isteach i limistéar eisiach eacnamaíoch na hÉireann níos luaithe an tseachtain seo. Images taken by the Irish Navy show an oil tanker named Kama putting more fuel into the warship. Léiríonn íomhánna a ghlac Cabhlach na hÉireann taincéar ola darbh ainm Kama, ag cur tuilleadh breosla sa long chogaidh. The Defense Forces said that "the Air Corps and the Navy monitored the vessels with air and sea patrols and that the vessels have since left the exclusive zone." Dúirt Óglaigh na hÉireann go ndearna "an tAer Chór agus an Cabhlach maoirseoireacht ar na soithigh le patróil aeir agus muirí agus gur imigh na soithigh as an limistéar eisiach ó shin." It is understood that the vessels were off the southern coast. Tuigtear gur amach ó chósta an deiscirt a bhí na soithigh. In April the Air Corps sighted three Russian ships off the West and South West coasts. I mí Aibreáin chonaic an tAer Chór trí long Rúiseach amach ó chóstaí an Iarthair agus an Iardheiscirt. They were in Irish seas off the Galway and Kerry coasts. Bhí siad i bhfarraigí na hÉireann amach ó chóstaí na Gaillimhe agus Chiarraí. It is understood that the British Royal Navy was keeping an eye on the vessels seen this week. Tuigtear go raibh Cabhlach Ríoga na Breataine ag coimeád súil ar na soithigh a chonacthas an tseachtain seo. A spokesman for the Department of Defense in London refused to say anything other than that "our national security will always be a priority" and to that end they have spent £65 million on two maritime patrol vessels since the incident with the Nord Stream submarine gas cable in September last year. Dhiúltaigh urlabhraí na Roinne Cosanta i Londain aon rud a rá seachas "go mbeidh tosaíocht i gcónaí ag ár slándáil náisiúnta" agus gur chuige sin atá £65 milliún caite acu ar dhá long faire muirí ó tharla an eachtra leis an gcábla gáis fomhuirí Nord Stream i Meán Fómhair anuraidh.
Sinn Fein defense spokesman John Brady TD has claimed that national security is now at risk because we are unable to police Ireland's 200-mile exclusive economic zone in the Atlantic as a result of staffing issues. Declan Power, Defense, and Security Expert explained how worrying is this arising situation.

Today my guest is Lieutenant Commander Grace Fanning. Grace is a member of The Irish Naval Service which is one of the three branches of the Irish Defence Forces. Originally from County Carlow, Grace has spent the last twenty-two years in the Irish Navy and has recently finished her post as Commanding Officer of the L.É. Róisín. I came across Grace on Twitter which she uses to post photos and videos about life on board a ship of the Irish Navy. I thought it would be interesting to have Grace on as a guest to find out more about being an officer, so I hope you are sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us. What's the secret to scaling a staffing company internationally? According to my special guest Andy Mackin, relationships are a key driver of business growth. In this episode, you will hear how Andy transitioned from serving with the Irish Navy for 21 years to becoming an EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist. He shares his story of rapidly expanding his staffing company from six employees to 200 in less than 8 years. At Mackin Talent, their number one value is “Relationships Matter.” Listen to Andy explain exactly how they invest time and resources to build stronger client relationships. He reveals how they've embedded this core value into their systems and procedures from the way they sell to the way they deliver their service. Andy is the CEO of Mackin Group, which encompasses Mackin EHS & Mackin Talent. They're an award-winning business services company headquartered in Ireland and operating globally with 200 team members in 12 countries. Episode Outline and Highlights [3:47] Discussion on Andy's process for posting original content on LinkedIn. [7:08] Andy's reading challenge and book recommendations. [11:09] Why Andy started a health and safety consulting firm after leaving the navy and how that led to building a staffing agency. [23:04] Great life lessons that Andy shares from working as a server/waiter. [27:25] Breaking down the stages - growing from 6 people to 200. [33:38] The business value of building relationships and treating everyone the way you want to be treated. [42:10] How to engage and build relationships with clients with a hybrid setup. [48:55] Andy's strategies for building business roles and framework. [50:30] Biggest challenges when scaling a business rapidly. [53:56] Andy shares his biggest learning experience from 2014 up to now. Life Lessons From Working as a Waiter Andy's story is interesting and colorful indeed - before setting up his own consultancy business, he served in the Irish Navy for 21 years. After retiring from the Navy, he set up his own health and safety business which led to him setting up a talent and staffing agency. What struck me is when Andy shared his stint as a server or waiter before joining the navy. He described it as his best 10 and a half months experience in life. For him, the life lessons he learned and the experience of dealing with people are invaluable. It became a foundational step in his journey that he attributes to his success in the recruitment space. Andy shares: “It is all about people. People that you deal with, life is all about people. I think recruitment is a pretty solid industry where it is all about people. How you get on with people, how you react to people, how you react to candidates, how you react to clients… it has served me well.” How Relationship Building Was the Key to Scaling the Business One of the keys to the growth of Mackin Talent is they partner with multi-national corporations and support them in rolling out sizeable EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) projects. As a small business, how do they win these major accounts? According to Andy, it's simple - relationships. Corporations are made up of people. He can form a relationship with one person in a company, land small opportunities, and expand from there. Eventually this leads to larger and larger opportunities. Of course, it is expected that they can deliver, which they do. To further strengthen their business relationship, they ensure that an onsite engagement specialist is present with their clients free of charge. This investment ensures that the project runs smoothly, resulting in less worries for their clients, and more repeat business for Mackin Talent. This practice enables them to embed themselves within their clients, and deliver excellent service. Their guiding principle is to treat other people how you want to be treated. The Importance of Meeting Clients Face-to-Face How much relationship building are you doing remotely versus in person? This is the same question I asked Andy during this interview. Since the pandemic, a lot of business owners are conducting the majority of their meetings virtually. But how critical is face-to-face relationship building when you are looking to scale your business? For Andy, they still allocate at least 65% in-person relationship building but are on the track of further increasing it to 75%. He spends thousands of dollars quarterly just to meet with employees and clients in person - the creativity and collaboration are just different when done in person. It is nice to speak with people regularly via Zoom, but meeting them in person levels up the relationship. Quote of the Week “Reviewing your past is one of the best ways to understand who you really are and how you’ll work best on a goal. Keep in mind that perfectionism can’t stand self-awareness. If you’re self-aware, you’re more likely to know and accept your limitations, which means you won’t fall for the promise of a perfect performance.” ― Jon Acuff, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done ------ Thank you for tuning in! Quote of the Week Thinking and doing, doing and thinking--these are the sum of all wisdom. Both must move ever onward in life, to and fro, like breathing in and breathing out. Life in Focus I talk more about my 2019 plans, 2 major goals, and the habits I'll be employing to help me get there. Other things I keep in mind: Your past is your teacher not your fortune teller (what can you learn from previous attempts, failures etc) What can/what do I need to cut out? We often need to prioritize our goal over other less important things. Get clear about that up front. Think ahead to what challenges you'll face and think about how to get around that. Make a list of my fears. Writing them down helps! Be ok with failure. Learn from it and move on. If I miss one day or one workout or one healthy meal, get right back on track at the next possible opportunity. "Growth is not in perfection, but in quickening your recovery time when you inevitably act contrary to your highest interests." – Neil Strauss How I Track Progress Weekly Evernote Note. List Quarterly, Monthly and Weekly Goals at the top. Then start a To-Do list for the week. The "to-do's" I add can be removed, moved to the next week or completed as I see fit. Plan each week on Sunday, look at the calendar and plot out my open time. Daily journaling of progress I'm making towards my two goals- paired with my existing habit of writing down my daily plan for water/food and movement. On a Happy Note Had a lovely visit with my dear friend Laura over the New Year's Holiday weekend Watching: The Affair, Season 4. Escape at Dannemore. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Leah Remini; Scientology the Aftermath, Ray Donovan. The Mule (in theater) Purging and clean out after the holidays! New workout area I set up in the cellar! Tree still up! Quote of the Week Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. – Calvin Coolidge ------ Thank you for tuning in. In this episode, I go on location to meet with Lt. Cdr. Roberta O’Brien at the National Maritime College of Ireland. Roberta has made Irish Naval History a few times in her career, so far! She became the first female to join the Irish Navy when becoming a cadet in 1995. She went on to become the first female Lt Commander to take charge of the LÉ Aisling a ship in 2008. And that’s just a couple of the firsts that we talk about during the very interesting and enjoyable conversation we had back in October. Another first for Roberta was when she played hurling with the boys’ team when she was in school. She learned a lot these skills from her brother and she took a great interest in the game, along with Tennis at a young age. Growing up Roberta was big into sports but she always enjoyed studying so PE teaching was an early aim. It wasn’t until she was in Fifth year before a spark was ignited in the Navy when she heard a Captain of a Ship give a talk. From here, Roberta started to set her sights on joining the Navy. She always wanted to be on the operations side of the ship instead of being an engineer so she could ultimately take command of a ship. Currently, Lt. Cdr. O’Brien is the Officer In Charge of Training School responsible for ensuring 43 potential and young officers are fully trained and equipped prior to taking up their first sea-going appointment. Here is a view into what we discuss during this fascinating show:•Learnings from a tough three months during cadet training school•How the environment changed in the Navy from Roberta started•Interpersonal Skills training that helped with EQ, Listening and Awareness•Leadership, Management, and Marketing Training •Psychology and Confirmation Bias •Challenges in the first couple of years of training and some relationship challenges •The Role of Mentors and Coaches during the initial years rising up the ranks•Spending three years in NUIG studying Science •Planning & Plotting out a path to the goal of commanding a ship •Getting the opportunity, ahead of her time, to take command of the LÉ Aisling in 2008•Some Key Decisions Made during the Command•Life After Command – Finding new challenges, goals, and responsibilities to reset focus •How Training & Learnings all come together during more recent roles in the service •A Typical Day Now in the Current Role as Officer of Training of Cadets. •A Deep Dive into the 1% Tips that Roberta Shares:oSetting Goals, working on tasks, and prioritizing on The Nearest ‘Crocodiles’oBeing a Night Owl to get Work Done oHow to develop and remain focus and present – touching on Mindfulness oJournaling and Keeping a Diary oInbox Management oSleep Patterns especially on ship time oDealing with Fear of Failure oIntuition and Decision Making – recalling some instances from the command on the shipoCollaborationoSuccess and its meaning oAdvice – Given or Gives out!oOne Person You’d Bring to a Dinner I hope you enjoy the episode. Be sure to like, share, and give me some feedback! Thanks,Rob
