This Day in Legal History: University of Alabama DesegregatedOn June 11, 1963, a pivotal moment in the American Civil Rights Movement unfolded at the University of Alabama. Governor George Wallace famously stood in the doorway of Foster Auditorium to block the enrollment of two African-American students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, symbolizing his commitment to segregation. This act of defiance came to an end when President John F. Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard, compelling Wallace to step aside under military pressure. The successful enrollment of Malone and Hood marked a significant step towards educational desegregation in the South. On the same day, President Kennedy delivered a landmark Civil Rights speech, addressing the nation and emphasizing the moral and legal necessity of ending racial discrimination. Kennedy's speech highlighted the importance of civil rights as a fundamental issue of morality, equality, and justice, urging Congress to pass comprehensive civil rights legislation. This address and the events at the University of Alabama signaled a turning point, showcasing the federal government's commitment to enforcing desegregation and protecting civil rights. The confrontation in Tuscaloosa and Kennedy's impassioned plea laid the groundwork for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which aimed to eradicate racial discrimination across various facets of American life.United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain is currently under investigation by the union's federal corruption monitor, Neil Barofsky, for allegations of retaliating against another union officer. This investigation poses a significant threat to Fain, who has built a reputation as a reformist leader closely allied with the Biden administration. The court-appointed monitor's 36-page report details claims of increased resistance from the union, including delays in providing documents mandated by a consent decree established in 2020 to avoid a federal takeover.Fain, who narrowly won the presidency last year by pledging transparency and reform, now faces accusations that challenge his public image. The same day the report was filed, the UAW achieved a landmark contract with Ultium Cells LLC, which significantly raised wages for workers. This victory followed Fain's success in unionizing a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, though efforts to unionize a Mercedes plant in Alabama failed. The monitor's report highlights at least two officials who allege retaliation for refusing to approve certain expenditures. One incident involves Fain reassigning duties from Vice President Rich Boyer, purportedly for “dereliction of duty,” though Boyer claims it was due to his refusal to engage in financial misconduct.Fain has denied these allegations, attributing them to his disruptive efforts to reform the union. He maintains that the UAW leadership is committed to democratic principles and serving its members, and welcomes the investigation to clear any doubts. The report also suggests that the UAW's cooperation with investigations has declined since February, complicating the monitor's efforts to address corruption. This investigation into Fain is connected to another probe involving Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock, who alleges that her power was curtailed in retaliation for not approving expenditures beneficial to Fain's office. The U.S. Department of Justice supports the monitor's claims, noting that the union's actions are impeding efforts to eliminate corruption within the UAW.UAW President Under Investigation by Federal Court Monitor (2)A secret recording of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, made public by liberal activist Lauren Windsor, reveals him supporting the idea of returning the country "to a place of godliness." The authenticity of the recording, shared on social media and with Rolling Stone, has not been independently verified by Reuters. Alito is heard agreeing with Windsor's statement about the necessity for believers in God to fight for the country's return to godliness. When questioned about political polarization, the voice identified as Alito's suggests that deep ideological differences make compromise difficult and predicts that one side will ultimately prevail. Windsor argues this reveals a bias, undermining judicial impartiality. James Duff, executive director of the Supreme Court Historical Society, condemned the secret recording as inconsistent with the event's spirit.Alito is also under scrutiny for flags linked to former President Trump's election fraud claims flying outside his homes. Despite Democratic calls for his recusal from related cases, Alito denied familiarity with the flags' symbolism and stated that his wife was responsible for the flag-flying.Supreme Court's Alito appears to back US return to 'godliness' in secret recording | ReutersThe 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans has decided against adopting a pioneering rule that would regulate the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by lawyers in its proceedings. Initially proposed in November, the rule would have required lawyers to verify the accuracy of citations and legal analysis generated by AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Misrepresentation could have led to sanctions or filings being dismissed. The court's decision was influenced by public comments from the legal community, which largely opposed the rule, arguing that existing regulations already ensure the accuracy of court filings. Some other federal appeals courts have also considered similar regulations due to incidents where AI-generated briefs included fictitious citations. Despite scrapping the proposed rule, the 5th Circuit emphasized that parties and counsel are still responsible for ensuring their filings are truthful and accurate. The court made it clear that using AI will not excuse any violations of existing rules.5th Circuit scraps plans to adopt AI rule after lawyers object | ReutersIn November, Arizona voters will decide on a proposal that would grant homeowners greater property tax refunds. This proposal allows taxpayers to seek refunds for expenses incurred due to the state's inability to mitigate what is deemed a "public nuisance" caused by unhoused populations. I argue that a more compassionate approach would incentivize contributions to initiatives that assist the unhoused rather than compensating homeowners for their presence. This proposal risks fostering negative perceptions of unhoused individuals by framing homelessness as a detriment to homeowners. Traditionally, property taxes have funded public services that benefit communities, including support for vulnerable populations. State governments often use tax revenues to combat housing shortages and provide relief to economically disadvantaged groups. The proposed policy in Arizona, however, shifts this focus, potentially causing long-term harm by categorizing homelessness as a homeowner inconvenience.Arizona faces an affordable housing crisis, with a statewide shortage of 270,000 homes and a 72% rise in homelessness in Phoenix over the past six years. The proposal could drain state resources and set a precedent for taxpayers to claim refunds whenever state policies are perceived to cost them money. This shift undermines broader efforts to fund social services and could lead to selective taxpayer funding of services.A humane alternative would involve increasing property taxes in areas with high unhoused populations to fund comprehensive social services. This could include affordable housing, shelters, mental health services, and job training programs. Taxpayers could receive incentives for donations to approved nonprofits assisting the unhoused, creating a virtuous cycle where increased funding reduces homelessness and, consequently, lowers property tax bills. As Arizona voters consider this proposal, they will influence how the state addresses homelessness and the role of property taxes in supporting community welfare. They can proceed forward with either compassionate approaches that can mitigate homelessness or reinforce social divisions by using tax policy to marginalize the unhoused.Arizona Property Tax Bill Would Harm Unhoused to Help Homeowners This is a public episode. Episode 15 - If I've only watched some 'Star Trek' am I still a Trekkie?! Are you a Trekkie?! Happy First Contact Day!!!

On this podcast episode I ponder the question - Am I a Trekkie? I recently watched the 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' trailer and that spurred some nostalgia feelings of when I used to watch the 'Star Trek' TV series when I was young. Now it has been quite some time since I last watched any 'Star Trek' but I wanted to check out the Paramount+ offerings since I have the subscription now. So, I watched the first episodes of 'Picard' and 'Discovery' then ended up watching some more episodes of 'Picard' which kept me up late (and hence this late podcast upload)! Also, April 5th is considered "First Contact Day" as this is in reference to the date April 5, 2063 of when Humans first made contact with the Vulcans in the 'Star Trek: First Contact' movie. About 'Star Trek: Picard' 'Star Trek: Picard' features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation.' The new series will follow this iconic character into the next chapter of his life. Set at the end of the 24th century, 18 years after the events of `Star Trek: Nemesis', with Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role, `Star Trek: Picard' revolves around retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard. He is still deeply affected by the loss of Lieutenant Commander Data, portrayed by Brent Spiner, and the destruction of Romulus, and steps into the next chapter of his life. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers and Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout) serves as co-executive producer and Kirsten Beyer as supervising producer. Hanelle Culpepper will direct the first two episodes of the series. Starring: Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Harry Treadaway, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Evan Evagora, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis. Created by: Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, Alex Kurtzman. Based on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' by Gene Roddenberry.

James Duff is Senior Pastor at The Common in Willagee in WA, and Perth Catalyst for City to City. James is very honest and very vulnerable in telling the story of how he experienced a time of breakdown. For six months, he didn't get out of bed. He wrestled with what he believed about God. Indeed he wrestled with whether he believed in God at all.So what turned it all around.? Well, best to listen to James describe what has brought healing to his life and power to his ministry. It's a great episode for anyone who has struggled to keep growing and going in serving the Lord. This series is brought to you by City to City Australia, and the 'Revitalise Australia' project. CTCA estimate that there are approximately 3000 Bible based, Gospel centred churches in Australia which are plateaued or declining. 'Revitalise Australia' is an ambitious project to see those churches rediscover life, health and purpose. You can watch a video of City to City founder Tim Keller talking about the 'Revitalise Australia' project here. We'd love it if you would recommend this episode to a friend. In our final episode of Season 1, we’re talking about something near and dear to everyone at Austin Parks Foundation: volunteerism. Volunteer projects are critical to the health of our city’s park system. Coordinated efforts between park stewards and city staff can lead to incredible, positive outcomes in our city’s outdoor spaces. We’re thrilled to have Barry Rivera, our Volunteer Manager at APF, facilitate this discussion. We’d like to thank our guests for joining us today including: Jerry Levenson and David Todd - veteran park stewards, Patrick Chaiken from the City of Austin Park Ranger Program as well as James Duff from the City of Austin Wildlife Division. Volunteer events are a core part of what we do at Austin Parks Foundation. In the midst of COVID-19, in-person volunteer events have been on pause as parks, trails and green spaces were seeing unprecedented use. A phrase we like to use is “over-loved.” As restrictions ease we hope to get you back out into the parks soon, so stay tuned on our website at austinparks.org/volunteer. We’re excited for you to hear from our guests on the importance of volunteering. Check out the video version of this Park Summit Session at austinparks.org/summit! It was a decent episode, but Brian took some issue with the cold open. And then, there's the long-standing issue with the Federation economy... but we got to see Hugh! We also respond to some feedback we have gotten back from our listeners about the acting. And we had to talk about Commodore Oh's ears, which you'll see in our blog post!

Welcome back to C-SPAN 5’s coverage of Tim the Handlebreaker’s Testimony about his Handle Report. We join Senior Member of HWIDG Tab Birt right….now. Mr. Handlebreaker, I appreciate your giving us your time to help us clarify some of the language in your most recent report. Now, you claim that in this most recent event that you and I quote ‘Were of sound mind and body’ end quote, when this most recent event occurred. But, sir, I have to ask, do you think that anybody of sound body or state of mind could remove their own closet door handle? Sir? Sir, you seem to be perspiring an awful lot, we have cold water available and a towel right there. Sir! Sir, DO NOT RUN! Okay, well, it seem’s like he has fled the building, go ahead and call in the next case:* No Callbacks* iPad Checkout Kiosks* Star Trek: Picard* A Lack of Trash CansLook, everyone hates calls. Getting calls, making calls, checking your voicemail for calls, because in this day and age, we’re cool with a text. Aunt Becky kicked the bucket? Get creative with emojis. I’m fired? Send me a GIF from The Apprentice! My car/cat/expensive piece of electronics are ready to be picked up? “Yo, u good fam, come get it” is perfectly fine. But if you specifically told me you would give me a call tomorrow at noon or whenever. I’m gonna be stuck staring at my phone until you do. So suck it up and call. What’s the sound of money? Is it coins in a jar? No, that’s not enough. Is it paper currency rubbing against one another? No, that’s too quiet. What is the universal sound of money? CHA-CHING. You know what else it isn’t? The barely audible sound of a finger poking at an iPad. Seriously, unless you are literally on the street selling something, get an point of sale system and not just an iPad on a stand and a card reader. We know why you want it. You want to play Angry Birds when you’re not doling out upscale vegan hot dogs to people. Well guess what, too bad. You should be handling rusty coins and coke-tinged cards like the rest of the world.Hey guess what, CBS, Alex Kurtzman, Patrick Stewart, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and whoever else is involved with Star Trek: Picard. You blew it. Already. Show’s not out til next year, but you did. Not everything has to be the end of the world, it gets tiring. Oh great a messiah superpower lady has the key to either unleash the Borg on a scale heretofore unknown or she can stop them. Once and for all with Jean-Luc’s help. There’s kung fu and lasers and ship battles and a new rag-tag ship full of misfits and a Roman samurai for some reason! STOP. (Tim here) I’m not even a huge Star Trek fan, but in 5 minutes I can come up with a more interesting, less severe but still dramatic show that lets you incorporate Picard, the rest of his crew, old Star Trek, new Star Trek, and inform the next generation (see what I did there) of Starfleet. You know how I know I can do it? Because I did. It took us 5 minutes after we finished recording this episode.More trash cans. Everywhere. Trash drones? Sure! Plain-ass trash cans? Yup! Innovative new trash chat solutions? Of course! As long as we have more trash cans. Trash cans are not inherently bad. The hide the bad things! Overflowing trash cans? Not a problem in this trash can-filled universe I’m imagining. Would it take more sanitation workers? Sure would. I’m adding hard working American jobs to the industry then. What’s the downside? Seriously? Smell? We’ve got trash bags that block odors these days. No excuses to not use those or to find a way to line bare cans with that technology. No one *wants* to litter (usually), but they’re forced to. MORE TRASH CANS, HANDLEBREAKER 2020.All this and more on this week’s exciting episode! Voicemails! Beef! Satanic news! Tim’s voice sounding like he smoked 100 pipes (or poles)! Don’t forget to join us on DISCORD, and support us on PATREON or by BUYING A SHIRT.

A szokásos epizódkibeszélő helyett ezúttal élménybeszámolók hangzanak el a június utolsó napján tartott második Űrszekerek közösségtalálkozóról, valamint a Stuttgartban rendezett Comic Con Germany-ről, ahol Attila Marina Sirtis-szel, és a nemzetközi rajongótábor számos képviselőjével találkozott. Hírszekció: - Július 1-én született Geneviève Bujold, aki mindössze két napig volt a Voyager kapitánya Kate Mulgrew előtt. Július 3-án Kurtwood Smith ünnepelte a születésnapját, aki a Föderáció elnökét játszotta A nem ismert tartományban, de a Voyagerben is láthattuk Annorax szerepében, aki a pokoli év idején volt a krenim parancsnok. Július 7-én az Enterprise Forrest admirálisát megszemélyesítő Vaughn Armstrongnak, és a Discovery első évadán dolgozó rendező/producernek, Akiva Goldsmannak is születésnapja volt, nyolcadikán pedig Shazad Latifnak (Tyler), akit elfelejtettünk bemondani. - A Discovery kreatív vezetősége átrendeződik: James Duff, A főnök (The Closer) és a Gyilkos ügyek (Major Crimes) alkotója vezető producerként csatlakozik a stábhoz, ezen kívül Olatunde Osunsanmi, aki az első évadban két epizódot is rendezett, társproducerből szintén vezető producerré lép elő. A San Diego Comic Con-on hatalmas Discovery panel készülődik. - Zachary Quinto egy podcastben azt nyilatkozta, hogy a Tarantino ötletéből készülő Star Trek mozi szerinte egy Kelvin film lesz. A Spockot alakító színész a közelgő negyedik mozifilmről is beszélt. A kibeszélő tartalmából: - Űrszekerek közösségtalálkozó - A Parallaxis LIVE-ban Dr. Vincze Miklós segítségével a közönség előtt is megvizsgáltuk a leggyakrabban látható Star Trek technológiák tudományos megalapozottságát, az élő Médiazabálókban pedig Ádám beszélgetett a meghívott magyarhangokkal: Kassai Károly, Jakab Csaba, Szersén Gyula és Németh Gábor felejthetetlen élményt szállított. Az eseményt az Impulzus kvízzel koronáztuk meg. - Comic Con Germany - Attila hosszú utat tett meg a németországi rendezvényig, ahol kedvenc színésznőjével, Marina Sirtissel személyesen is felvette a kapcsolatot. Exkluzív beszámoló a stuttgarti con részleteiről, ahogy Attila látta.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2 and Picard Show News Roundtable! It’s finally time for us to bring you our long-awaited Season 2 News and Picard Show Roundtable!!! Recorded on September 8th, Ruthie and I were joined by two past roundtable participants – Mark Des Cotes from Solo Talk Media, and Steve Brown of the Panels to Pixels Podcast, and two new participants – Mark Deal and Wes Huntington from The Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast. We had some recording glitches during this episode, including some we didn’t know about at the time. More on that later. We start with the news… We reacted to the former co-showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts being fired from the show for both budget concerns and abuse in the writers’ room. We discussed the announcement of Alex Kurtzman becoming the new showrunner and James Duff later made an executive producer and probable next showrunner. Then, we reacted to the casting announcements of Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and, most recently, Ethan Peck as Spock. Onto the trailer!!! Most of us had seen the trailer (one exception… and you’ll have to listen to find out who hasn’t), but we talk about the trailer and our reactions to it. We also talk about what we would like to see in Season 2. Jean-Luc Picard… Is Back!!! After that, we then spend a good deal of time discussing last month’s announcement at Star Trek Las Vegas that the next Star Trek series will be focused around Jean-Luc Picard. We reacted to that announcement; we dissected some of what Patrick Stewart said about the show is and isn’t, and we speculated what the show will be about. What we think some of the other shows might be was also discussed. We finally get to some undiscussed feedback!!! Ruthie and I finally go through some feedback that came in after the end of the season. We recorded that feedback separately, so the other panelists do not participate during that section of the podcast. We STILL didn’t cover EVERYTHING… The “Short Treks“, four shorts covering short stories within the Star Trek: Discovery universe, were not covered in this roundtable. In hindsight, we probably should have. On September 20th, CBS announced that the first of these Short Treks – a Tilly story called Runaway – would be released on October 4th. This would be followed by shorts in November, December, and January. We will definitely be covering the Short Treks next time. A few days after we recorded, CBS CEO Les Moonves resigned amidst allegations of sexual harassment, and since he’s been the driving force behind CBS All Access, I’m sure we will have more to say about this next time. We also didn’t talk much about the existing characters, some of the people involved in the Picard show, like Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, who also wrote one of the Short Treks, TNG cast talking about the Pi
