For this year's Volunteer's Week (1 - 7 June 2023) here on RNIB Connect Radio we thought it would be a good time to celebrate, recognise and thank all those amazing people who contribute their time to volunteer with the RNIB and help to make a more inclusive world for blind and partially sighted people. One such person who has given up quite a lot of her time as a Volunteer with the RNIB is Charlene Kerr-Spencer. Charlene began volunteering with the RNIB around the time when she started to lose her sight and had to end her career as a Nurse, a job that she loved. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Charlene to find out more about what made her want to start volunteering with the RNIB, how she has been able to channel all her caring Nursing skills into the role of a volunteer, helping other blind and partially sighted people and into her new career here at the RNIB too. They open the discussion by coming up with a working definition of of ethics, then dig into some specific cases that can arise with both animals and people in the course of wildlife rehabilitation operations. Such issues range from professionalism around animals being rehabilitated (no “nuzzling” of the squirrels, please) to informed consent during the recruiting and hiring process about wildlife rehabilitation job requirements and expectations.Resources:NWRA/IWRC Code of EthicsBook: Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring For Self While Caring For Others (Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky and Connie Burk 2009)Ideals and Realities: Presenting Wildlife Ethics to Volunteers and the Public. VocalEyes, in partnership with Stagetext, Autism in Museums and the Centre for Accessible Environments, recently publish the Heritage Access report 2022 which highlights the importance of online access information for the UK museum and heritage sector, and tracks the changes in the state of access over the past four years since the publication of the 2018 report. The report is structured to mirror the visitor journey, covering aspects from pre-visit research such as finding and getting to a venue (such as directions, parking and step-free and level access), aids and facilities at the venue (such as toilets, lifts, Large Print guides, induction loops) and downloadable resources that can be used at the venue (such as sensory maps and visual stories). The report also breaks down the different media types in which web content is presented, and gives clear, non-technical guidance on how to ensure that text, links, images, video, audio, and downloadable documents are all accessible. It also covers tips for inclusive communication with visitors. VocalEyes also launched the Heritage Access 2022 benchmark tool, an online search and map interface where you can find the benchmark score for the access information provided by the 2,258 UK museums and heritage sites covered by the project. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined by Catrin Podgorski, VocalEyes heritage Access Project and Volunteer Manager of the Heritage Access Report and Vidya Nathan, one of the Visually Impaired Digital Heritage Access Report Volunteers to share some of the findings of the 2002 report. Catrin explained to Toby about the background to the heritage Access Report, some of the changes and improvements in online access information since the 2018 report, why VocalEyes wanted to recruit a remote online community of digital research volunteers including blind and partially sighted people along with other volunteers with a wide range of backgrounds and disabilities. Vidya told Toby why, as a visually impaired person, she wanted to get involved in the research as one of the digital research volunteers, why it was so good to be part of the online community of volunteers, some stand out points from the research for her as a visually impaired person and what we can all do as blind and partially sighted people to help improve both the online access information on museums, galleries and heritage sites websites and their access offer for us all too. Throughout Volunteering Week 2022, we spoke to Vicki Jones – Programme Manager at TalkTalk. Vicki has been at St John Ambulance volunteer for over eight years – something she's very passionate about. Before embarking on her career in tech, Vicki had a strong interest in becoming a paramedic so volunteering alongside her day job allows her to succeed in both her career and her dream. Vicki says most of her ‘free' time is spent volunteering – not just for St John Ambulance. Vicki was also integral in her local covid vaccine rollout programme in the early days – part of the volunteering team for administering the first jabs. Her work with St John meant she already had many of the skills to fulfil the role. As well as this, Vicki is part of the organising committee for her local village rose fete. Our company values, we care, we challenge and we commit, encourage employees to give something back to the local community and TalkTalk colleagues have up to 3 paid working days per year to do so via volunteering for a charity or community organisation.

Sara Bumgarner, Volunteer Services Manager & RSVP Director of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of the Treasure Coast shares how her organization re-purposed use of a simple online device to help volunteers and patients stay connected during COVID. The VNA of the Treasure Coast was founded over 40 years ago with the distinct mission of fulfilling the need to provide homecare for local residents of Indian River County, Florida. The VNA operates Hospice House, a 12-room state of the art facility privately nestled on hospital grounds, Hidden Treasures Thrift Stores to help fund hospice services, and offers private home care services which include transportation, personal care and clinical care. The organization's work is carried out by close to 400 clinical and administrative staff. In addition, volunteers are at the heart of the VNA and are a key resource to the agency. More than 400 dedicated individuals generously donate their time and talent to assist in various aspects of the VNA. They interact with patients, help out at VNA Hospice House, provide assistance around the office and thrift stores. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, VNA was forced to discontinue in-person volunteer roles. Instead, they implemented a virtual visit program, where volunteers could keep in touch with their patients using a virtual tablet called a GrandPad (https://www.grandpad.net/). The tool was initially developed to keep families and seniors connected through a super simple interface. The use was repurposed to connect volunteers and homebound patients. The Midnight Mission is the oldest continuously operating human service organization in the Los Angeles region. Centered in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, The Midnight runs one of the most efficient direct service operations in the country. With only five executive managers throughout its 100-year history, The Midnight has been a consistent beacon of light for those with nowhere else to turn. This past summer I went with my church youth group to the Midnight Mission where we provided sack lunches for the people in the Midnight Mission program, and that day I met Andrew Linares, who has worked as the volunteer manager at the Midnight Mission since April of 2018. Andrew went through the program from 2015-2017 after living on the streets of Skid Row himself, struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction. Today I get to interview Andrew about his journey to finding recovery and the start of a new life at The Midnight Mission and how that turned into his life's work. Andrew shares with me all of the inspiring programs and work going on at the Midnight Mission where they help thousands of people get off the streets of LA, find food and shelter and water, learn to work and save money and eventually move on to find work and homes for themselves. I couldn't help but think over and over of when Jesus taught us that when we feed the hungry and clothe the naked, it's just as if we were doing it for the Savior himself. I was so inspired by Andrew's story and his perspective and the work he's doing at the Midnight Mission and I can't wait to share the gift he gave to me by sharing this with you too. Kia Ora Whānau. Some would say that Gareth Thomas has enjoyed a magic run of weather in the four years that WUU2K (Wellington Urban Ultramarathon) has been run. We all hoped that 2021 would be an extension of that great weather however it was sadly not to be. Faced with difficult choices everywhere he turned, Gareth ultimately had the choice made for him by the Meteorological Service. So the whole field ended up battling the 21km course in the teeth of the most challenging conditions many had experienced. The episode starts at registration, with Eugene and Matt catching up with Gareth and Volunteer Manager, Cate Shave. We also have a catch up with Spike and Fiona Hayvice at the finish line on top of a freezing Mt Victoria. We reconvene the conversation the next day in far-drier environs (thanks, Rydges Wellington!!) to run down the race, go through results, Hardrock weekend, and all the good stuff. We also have a post-race catch-up with race director Gareth, who it would be fair to say has been through his share of professional and personal challenges over the past 12 months. Thanks Wellington for being O for Oarsome and thanks to all who shouted out on the course!! Enjoy.

Today's Episode: A Strategic Approach to Volunteering During a Pandemic with our guest Paul Reddish, CEO of Volunteering Matters, a UK-based organization. We are also joined by Barbara Regnier, Volunteer Manager for their program Independent Visitors. We get a view of the big picture, UK-wide situation from Paul and the project based view from Barbara. Volunteers give the gift of time, and in the UK pre-pandemic there were about 13 million volunteers across the country. While the pandemic has been a driver for volunteering during lock-down, is there really an increase? Or does it just seem that way? And if there is an increase will they all be able to continue volunteering after they go back to work? We may not answer all these questions but we certainly give them the once over. Join us for a great conversation on volunteering during a pandemic! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cecilia-sepp/support

Long-term goals can become one of the most stressful parts of young adult life. People want to know about your plans for university or work, if you want to get married, whether you want to travel or settle down, and if a family and kids are in the cards. And these questions can be pretty intense without the added layer of figuring out your future with a chronic illness/disability. Health issues can make planning for the future a bit challenging, because it’s unknown what the next month will look like, let alone the next ten years. So how do those of us with health struggles plan our future? That’s what our guest, Rachel Mayo, helps us with on Episode 23. As a Type One Diabetic since her diagnosis at 18, Rachel has spent almost 15 years growing up and creating a life for herself with chronic illness. She has developed a positivity activism style all her own through blogging, public speaking, being a guest writer on numerous articles for nonprofits like Beyond Type One, Nick Jonas’ young adult diabetes activism nonprofit and podcasts, and fundraising for charities like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. For Rachel, she wanted to advocate with humor and kindness on what has been her life journey of growing up while balancing T1D, and the role her chronic and invisible illness has played in her decisions. Rachel has documented her career from being a leadership and conference consultant with Paradigm Shift to currently working for JDRF as a volunteer engagement and outreach manager with Middle and East Tennessee, to her IVF and fertility and pregnancy journey through her hyper-active social media platform. It is her transparency on career-building, fertility struggles, pregnancy and first-time momma life with her son Noah, that makes Rachel the perfect guest on the show. In this episode, Rachel and Dominique examine the big topics older youth with chronic illness/disability should ask about their futures NOW, discover Rachel’s ideal celebrity mom playdates for her and Noah, give the best answers on how to handle those ‘adulting’ topics when you need to plan ahead (like fertility, having children, or traveling for work), lay out the best tips for how to bring these talks and questions to your doctors/support network—with the realization that asking questions is not only okay, but encouraged, motivate us to discover that being assertive for yourself can be in both verbal and written formats (hello email/texting services with doctors!), laugh lots when it’s discovered that Rachel and Dominique both have an Elmo-related nickname (and it’s DEFINITELY a couple stories you need to hear), create the life playlist for all your future adulating needs like the best sleep tools, scheduler apps, medication reminder apps, diet/snack tricks to be on-the-go, must-have parenting tools (like Rachel’s key baby apps for all first-time moms that work the best for spoonie moms), and Rachel’s key tips for hashtags that divide her posts between being a T1D/invisible illness mom AND a T1D activist, get super heartfelt as Rachel talks about her fertility journey, pregnancy and post-baby Noah life that had to blend with her T1D life she was accustomed to and all Rachel’s advice for fellow women with chronic illnesses/disabilities that want to have children as part of their future plans, and advise a seriously dynamic toolkit for handling any negative comments in the social media world about your life choices (from career, travel, or future family plans) that coexist with your chronic illness/disability. It’s so true that planning a future—whether that be jobs, marriage, children, or travel—can be quite multifaceted when you also have a chronic illness/disability, but Rachel’s epic special guest appearance shines a bright light into how full adulthood with health struggles can be pretty damn sweet! But what if we could enhance the quality of our life today by confronting our own mortality and shifting the way we think about death? Death or dying may feel dark and strikes up a mix of emotions for many of us. There’s the fear of it happening; the anxiety of the unknown; and sadness for those that we’ve lost. After my conversation with today’s guest Mary Jones, I’ve been thinking a lot more about how I think about death and how I want to leave the world. This process has helped me reflect on my own values and identify the things that are really, truly important to me. Mary Kelly Jones is the Director of Family Support Services for Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley in Potsdam New York. With over 25 years’ experience at Hospice, Mary manages Hospice Chaplains, Social Workers, Volunteer Manager and Bereavement Staff. Mary is passionate about educating Hospice staff and the St. Lawrence County community in all matters related to end of life. She has written over 30 grief publications for hospice families and community. She has served as a member of the Professional Education Committee for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization. In addition to her role at Hospice, Mary is an adjunct instructor at SUNY Potsdam in the Public Health and Human Performance department. Mary has taught Death & Dying, both fall and spring semesters, for the last twelve years. Mary also serves as the chair of the St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition and currently chairs the St. Lawrence County Community Service Board. Mary and I talk about: How you fundamentally shift as a person being in the room when someone is near the end of life. How changing the way we think about death can help us heal and die well. How Hospice as opposed to the traditional medical system focuses on the quality of life instead of trying to lengthen their life as patients near the end. That death is inevitable so instead of trying to stop death we can focus on enhancing our lives. Why there’s no right way to grieve except to make sure that you do. How a death and dying course taught a group of college kids what it means to live. Four simple phrases—“Please forgive me,” “I forgive you,” “Thank you,” and “I love you”—carry enormous power to mend and nurture our relationships and inner lives. And how our legacies and the legacies of the ones we love will always be carried on.
