The large majority of about 50 pilot whales stranded across Farewell Spit near Nelson have returned to sea. DOC and Project Jonah crew have returned to the site of yesterday's stranding, helping cool the creatures in the rising sun. Some mammals appear to still be stuck on the high tide line, with only a small window of time to get them out to deeper water. Project Jonah Volunteer Manager Louisa Hawkes told Andrew Dickens they've had a tough night. She says that six whales died overnight, but 15 are still alive, and the rest of the pod appears to have swum off and stayed in deeper water. For this year's Volunteer's Week (1 - 7 June 2023) here on RNIB Connect Radio we thought it would be a good time to celebrate, recognise and thank all those amazing people who contribute their time to volunteer with the RNIB and help to make a more inclusive world for blind and partially sighted people. One such person who has given up quite a lot of her time as a Volunteer with the RNIB is Charlene Kerr-Spencer. Charlene began volunteering with the RNIB around the time when she started to lose her sight and had to end her career as a Nurse, a job that she loved. Charlene first role as a volunteer with the RNIB was helping out with the RNIB's Living Well With Sight Loss courses and it was not long until Charlene took over the running of the course. Very quickly after starting to run the courses Charlene joined the RNIB as an employee firstly as a Volunteer Manager and has not looked back since. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Charlene to find out more about what made her want to start volunteering with the RNIB, how she has been able to channel all her caring Nursing skills into the role of a volunteer, helping other blind and partially sighted people and into her new career here at the RNIB too. That experience put her on the path of transition where she began seeking justice for child victims. A fire was ignited, and that flame morphed into a lifetime of determined, vocal advocacy for our most vulnerable. In all she does, LaCosta aims to break the cycle of abuse and neglect in our community. As the Executive Director for Speak Up for Kids of Palm Beach County, she works diligently to support local Guardian ad Litem child advocacy volunteers in the quest to herald the child's best interest.Embracing Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us”, LaCosta takes on each day with devotion and intensity, leading by example, and lighting the path for others who passionately defend the defenseless.Ultimately, her heart's desire is to improve the life of each young victim of maltreatment; see pain replaced by kindness, sadness overcome by happiness, and silence eradicated by voices united to Speak Up.

In 2007, the Light House Shelter was struggling. Members of Heritage Baptist Church answered the call for help by doing what they do best: preparing delicious food, inviting people to join in and providing the means to help this valuable community mission. Using the connection between “soup” and that day's NFL playoff game, The SOUPer Bowl lunch for the Light House caught community attention and launched what has become for many a treasured tradition. Fast forward 13 years. Much has changed for the Light House Homeless Prevention Support Center, but the tradition continues as the mission of the Light House expands to help rebuild lives by providing shelter and services to prevent homelessness and empower people as they transition toward employment, housing and self-sufficiency. Sunday, February 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Heritage Baptist (1740 Forest Drive, Annapolis) will host the 13th Annual SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Light House Shelter. Tim sits down with Chef Zachary Pope, the kitchen maestro who makes the event happen, and Kait Dawson, Volunteer Manager for the Lighthouse Shelter to talk about the SOUPer Bowl and how the Lighthouse Shelter is making a difference in people's lives.
