The Blind Rage podcast: Horror Movie Commentaries

“Want a date? Going out? Lookin' for some action?” On this week's titillating episode of The Blind Rage Podcast, it's Frank Henenlotter's terrifying tale of sluts and bolts, the one and only FRANKENHOOKER! After a freak mishap with an out-of-control lawnmower, Jeffrey Franken's (James Lorinz) fiancée (Patty Mullen) is eaten by the maniacally spinning blades. Only a few pieces of her remain: an arm, a foot, and, of course, her head. Unable to accept the loss, Jeffrey concocts an elaborate plan to resurrect her, using the dismembered limbs of New York City streetwalkers to fill in the blanks. Oh, and did I mention there's supercrack? FRANKENHOOKER is a hilarious and wildly entertaining dark comedy that remains a cult favorite, even close to 35 years later. I'm very happy to finally feature it on the podcast.

This was an excellent interview due to the fact that James Lorinz is one of my favorite actors (because of Frankenhooker). It is most certainly one of my favorite movies and a guilty pleasure that only a few seem to understand the concept behind the movie. Frankenhooker should be considered Troma Horror and I am surprised that it is not. I know that it has to have certain stipulations to be categorized as Troma but in the end I really don't care because it is such a GREAT movie! We talked about how he was chosen for the role as 'Jeffrey', the crazy concept of the "super-crack", and the improvisations. Overall, I enjoyed this interview because James Lorinz is such a cool guy. I guess this movie hits home for me because supposedly it takes place in New Jersey (Hohocus) of all places, clearly a fictional town just across the river from New York. But definitely check out his new movie "Crash the System" now streaming on Tubi and Amazon. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

This week Joshua and Drusilla watch the classic film by Frank Henenlotter's Frankenhooker. From Wikipedia: "Frankenhooker is a 1990 American black comedy horror film directed by Frank Henenlotter. Very loosely inspired by Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the film stars James Lorinz as medical school drop-out Jeffrey Franken and former Penthouse Pet Patty Mullen as the title character."But first! Josh goes to a horror legend's wedding, Drusilla attends a witchy book launch, and Drusilla watched Baz Luhrman's Elvis and Jack Be Nimble, a forgotten Alexis Arquette film that she loved. They briefly discuss the various Arquettes before Josh gets into Fast Times at Ridgemont High and full dong before going in on The Beaver Trilogy. Then they get into the feature and its troubled history. Both absolutely adore the film and have a history with it. They discuss some of Frank Henenlotter's other films. The movie has an innocence about it despite being transgressive. They discuss Louise Lasser and the brilliant performances of Patty Mullen and James Lorinz. Josh does a dramatic reading. Super crack does not go undiscussed, nor do the various MPAA issues. Then the duo plays Have You Seen It? Next week is a special episode. For this week's installment in Femme Fatale February, imagine this: you waddled into some video store and you need to pick a movie. You want to pick something empowering to womyn, because you aren't no scrub (also known as a "busta"). In this scenario, the alphabet is different and you see two options side by side, Teeth and Frankenhooker. Which do you choose? Teeth was written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein. It features Jess Weixler as Dawn O'Keefe, who just happens to have a Gilgamek vagina from South Park... y'know, lined with teeth. Weixler recently wrote and starred in Fully Realized Humans. Please see it and report back, because it seems to be a really interesting character study. Rather than ending up in Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, this poor girl just goes to Jesus parties and talks about abstinence. We didn't talk about this on the show, but I am dying to know what you think her X-Man-- X-Woman? Aha! X-Person name would be. Let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Best submissions will get read on next week's episode. She is repeatedly victimized by the men in her life, though refreshingly not the one guy you would expect if you've ever seen a horror movie before. The main antagonist in the film is John Hensley as Brad. You may recall he was in Nip/ Tuck. Remember when that show was kinda like a thriller and then it just became gross and sad? Anyway, his mutation is being (and not having) a massive dick-- which you get to see onscreen! ...albeit mangled and bleeding. The other choice is Frankenhooker. I know, you are probably rolling your eyes, but let's have a candid discussion about it. This film was "written" by Bob Martin and Frank Henenlotter. I say "written," because Henenlotter has basically admitted that this movie had very little in terms of a script, yet somehow it provides pretty timeless social commentary and has structural elements like callbacks. You may know Henenlotter from the Basket Case trilogy. He is also a renowned cinema historian. If you are a fan of this show, please consider checking him out. He has some great interviews and can talk everything from pulp exploitation films to b-movie creature features. Frankenhooker stars James Lorinz as Jeffrey Franken. He is an electroengineer, blessed and cursed with brilliance, and seemingly doused in rotten luck. His fiancee, played by Patty Mullen, is Elizabeth Shelley/ the TITular Frankenhooker (see what I did there?). Sadly, her onscreen career was very short, with her only other film being Doom Asylum. She was a Penthouse playmate of the month and year though, so that's cool. When tragedy befalls Elizabeth, Jeffrey exploits working women, trying to harvest their parts to reconstruct the love of his life. Truly, a romantic masterpiece. Which is better? Which is more fun to watch? Which is more empowering to women? Which should you rent in this scenario? Listen, and find out! Creature Feature Weekend is a brand new horror convention coming to Historic Gettysburg, PA this August 30th, 31st, and September 1st. We are a kid-friendly convention with an emphasis on activities which include Tim Cappello from the Lost Boys live in concert, an independent film festival, a room of oddities, arcade machines, a circus sideshow, a one-man band, campfire stories, and to make sure you have plenty of food to choose from we will have food trucks. As this is a horror convention we will also have celebrity guests including a Frog Brothers Reunion (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander), a Frankenhooker Reunion (Patty Mullen, James Lorinz, and Frank Henenlotter), Tom Woodruff Jr (Pumpkinhead, Xenomorph in 4 Aliens movies, Gillman in Monster Squad), Joe Bob Briggs, Alex Vincent (Child's Play), Billy Bryan (Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Puppeteer that controlled Chucky), Walter Phelan (Dr. Satan from House of 1000 corpses), Glenn Ennis (Jason Voorhees in Freddy vs. Jason, Face of Colossus in Deadpool) in his second convention ever, Geretta Geretta (Demons), and so much more. Come out this Labor Day Weekend to meet the stars of some of your favorite horror movies and stay to enjoy the activities and explore Gettysburg. Remember that a portion of ticket sales will go to help Jenny "Deadgirl" Spain. Jenny has gone through many surgeries since being diagnosed with Cancer and after losing her medical insurance due to high deductibles has had mounting bills. With multiple procedures to go to help rid herself of chronic pain, we are putting our efforts toward helping her and we ask that everyone consider doing the same by either donating when purchasing tickets or by going to Jenny's GoFundMe page (Link available on our website). We thank you for listening and hope to see you all at Creature Feature Weekend. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
