一般被认为早期的 Jazz Rap 歌曲是 “Talkin' All That Jazz” , 发行于 1988 年,来自纽约的 Stetsasonic 组合为了回击 James Mutume (Funk 乐队 Mutume 主创)对 Hip-Hop 音乐形式的的批评,旋律采样了 Lonnie Liston Smith “Expansions”;纽约组合 Gang Starr 1989 年首作 "No More Mr.Nice Guy” 中就有几首采样爵士乐的歌曲,这促使了导演 Spike Lee 邀请 DJ Premier 为他 1990 年的电影 “Mo Better Blues” 制作了电影歌曲“Jazz Thing”,这首歌对爵士大家们的致敬使它成为了 Jazz Rap 的经典代表;Gang Starr 的前三张可以被认为是 Jazz Rap,从 1994 的 “Hard to Earn”开始更加硬核;Gang Starr 成员之一 Guru 的 Jazzmatazz 系列,其中发表于 1993 年的 Vol.1 中不仅有当时拥抱融合爵士乐的前辈,也有同辈的跨界爵士乐手和 rapper;纽约集体 Native Tongue 在采样手法上跳出了以往 James Brown 的范围,重要组合 A Tribe Called Quest 从 1990 年发表首张专辑开始就成了 Jazz Rap 高水准的代表,1991 年的 “Low End Theory” 奠定了 90s 东岸说唱的美学,1993 年的 “Midnight Marauders” 更是在制作层面达到新的高度;推荐纪录片 “Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travel of A Tribe Called Quest” (2011)1992 年 Pete Rock 和 C.L. Smooth 的 “Mecca and the Soul Brothers” 是超越时代的制作水平,Pete Rock 制作风格的独特性;以局外人姿态进入 Jazz Rap 场景的组合 Digable Planets 两张专辑都是我们的爱,1993 年的 “Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space” 明显体现出 Butterfly 特立独行的抽象哲思和采样上的想法,1994 年的 “Blowout Comb” 主题更多围绕黑人民族主义主张;来自费城乐队形式的 The Roots 的 “Organix”(1993)和 “Do You Want More?!!!??! Dream Warriors “And Now the Legacy Begins” (1991) , Brand New Heavies “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1” (1992) , 英国 Us3,法国 MC Soolar, Soon E MC,制作人 Jimmy Jay;02. Episode Playlist:A Tribe Called Quest - “Scenario”Stetsasonic - “Talkin' All That Jazz”Gang Starr - “Jazz Thing”Gang Starr - “The Place We Dwell”Guru - “Loungin'" ft. This week we're bending the rules of our New York style season slightly, by interviewing fellow Brit, Jason Jules. Regardless, his new book Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style is extremely pertinent to this season's theme, given its concern with mid-century American style. Aleks and Jason explore Black Ivy in this episode, of course, but we also hear about Jason's fascination for cultural trend-spotting, his passion for jazz music and his admiration for progressive rap culture. It's a fascinating conversation, this. We hope you enjoy it.---HandCut Radio is produced by Birch, the London based creative office of James Allen.
