Ken Pilot conducts his second interview with Chris Burch, Founder of Burch Creative Capital, for this episode of The Retail Pilot.· Diverse Business Ventures: Chris Burch's company, Burch Creative Capital, is actively involved in multiple industries including hotels, real estate development, prefab building, technology, and retail. He highlights an innovative project in Boston where they are constructing low-income housing using prefabricated materials in collaboration with the Public Housing Authority.· Prefab Housing Innovation: A significant project discussed is the construction of an 11-story building with 240 apartments using prefabricated materials. This method improves quality control, speeds up construction, and is beneficial for workers. The project, named Lab 9, is unique and has potential for expansion.· Hotel and Hospitality: Burch's hotel, Nihi, off the coast of Bali, has received numerous accolades and is known for its unique, community-focused experience. Burch is expanding his hospitality ventures with a new project in Costa Rica, emphasizing authentic experiences and community involvement.· Green Lane Salad Chain: Burch introduced a new salad chain, Green Lane, offering fresh, affordable salads through a drive-through model. The business has received positive feedback and is expanding rapidly with plans to roll out more locations. The chain maintains a focus on value, quality, and customer satisfaction.· Fashion Industry Involvement: Burch is involved in several fashion brands, including STAUD, Rowing Blazers, Danielle Guizio, and Solid and Striped. Each brand is at different stages of growth or turnaround, with a focus on affordability and customer engagement. Burch emphasizes the importance of operational efficiency and strategic pricing in the fashion industry.· Investment Philosophy and Approach: Chris Burch invests in businesses with momentum and potential for significant growth. He prefers to partner with businesses, offering not just capital but also operational expertise, which gives him an edge over traditional private equity funds. He looks for companies with demand and potential, even if they are currently struggling, like Rowing Blazers, which had strong brand perception but was facing operational challenges.· Involvement and Value Addition: Burch's level of involvement varies depending on the needs of the business. He can provide strategic vision or get into detailed operational aspects if necessary. He emphasizes the importance of building a solid management team and working directly with entrepreneurs to maximize business potential.· Preference for Control and Strategic Planning: Burch prefers to have significant control over the businesses he invests in, avoiding situations where board control could impede his influence. He focuses on long-term strategic planning, aiming to envision where the business will be in ten years and working towards that vision.· Vision for New Ventures: Burch is interested in integrating supply chain and luxury experiences into new markets, particularly in housing, hotels, and hospitality. He is exploring the development of a new, unique hotel concept in Hialeah, blending luxury, entertainment, and wellness. He believes the future of hospitality lies in creating spaces that offer both high-energy entertainment and serene relaxation.· Lessons Learned and Investment Criteria: Over his career, Burch has learned the importance of separating emotionality from investment decisions and the critical role of hiring competent CEOs. He tends to sell his investments early, which has been both a benefit for peace of mind and a potential downside in terms of missed growth opportunities. He looks for substantial stakes in companies, preferring significant involvement and control over smaller, passive investments.

The biggest news this week was undoubtable the new Talking Watches episode released by Hodinkee. I had originally guested that the star would be Eric Clapton, but the episode took a bit of a different spin. We also take a look at a new collaboration, one that takes inspiration from a Heuer yacht timer. Being that I have a passion for yacht timers, I really enjoyed the release. As online traffic flows become untraditional, AI takes over, and the definition of ‘brand' evolves, the quest for tech-led excellence has never been more crucial. Brands will stay brands, but how do they secure sustainable scaling on a rapidly changing digital frontier?Right now, no brand stands out. Those set to win long-term will take the mediocre output AI produces, and make magic from it; adding a human-touch the fashion industry desperately needs to de-commoditize creative differentiation. No one is better equipped to share successful tactics for achieving this than today's guest, Jennifer Roebuck – CMO at Metaversal, ex-CCO of Ted Baker, and ex-CMO of Sephora UK.As a Board Advisor at Warm Storm, a Marketing Transformation Consultant for Fossil Group, and an NED at AllBright, she's an expert at leveraging Advocacy.Join us in this episode of Building Brand Advocacy, where Paul speaks with Jennifer about the imminent expansion of Social Commerce in the West, future-proofing your brand by ensuring your individuality, and the 4 to-do's of any brand looking to stand out – taking a leaf from Uniqlo, Liquid Death, and Rowing Blazers' playbooks to catapult your brand to the big leagues. In their role as dopamine dealers, brands and creators alike must navigate disingenuous waters to truly connect with their Advocates. Paul and Jennifer dissect this intersection of technology, humanity, and brand identity, answer whether blockchain will save us from AI-generated marketing scams, and delve into her predictions for an industry run off of selling via video.Rate & Review Building Brand Advocacy:Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3HYuoYlSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3DjUd1YAnd connect with Jennifer here:LinkedInMetaversalAllBrightFossil Group Inc.Building Brand Advocacy is handcrafted by our friends over at: www.fame.so Hosted on Acast. Eric Wind is joining me for his second episode of Collectors Gene Radio today and as you could imagine, we're chatting all things watches and Wind Vintage. Since our last chat, Eric's had a countless list of exciting things going on for him and his brand, such as his partnership with Kith, the several Rowing Blazers collaborations, a Volume 2 of his HSNY talk, his podcast Significant Watches, and a lot more. Most notably, the incredible selection of vintage watches you can shop on his website, windvintage.com. It's not often you get to chat with someone who is so honest and knowledgeable across so many different brands. Eric's continuous efforts to be involved in as much as he can definitely attributes to where he and Wind Vintage are at today. It's always great to catch up and pick his brain, as if I don't bug him enough. Needless to say, I'm sure we'll be doing much more of these. So without further adieu, my friend Eric Wind, for Collectors Gene Radio.

Before he was the Director of Marketing for King Racing, 13-year-old Brent Keuch was watching TV when rowing came on the screen. That was when he knew he wanted to learn to row. Looking for direction, Brent found a boarding school 120 miles from home where he could study and row. Later, rowing helped him land his first job, and introduced him to the woman who would become his wife. He's coached juniors and masters. Today his personal and professional philosophy is all about getting more people in boats and sharing the life lessons that this sport holds. If you're into watches, you 100% know the name Eric Wind. For those that don't, well you're welcome. Eric's the founder of Wind Vintage which he launched in 2017, after a career at Christie's auction house and has since become a merited authority in the watch world, which can be proven by just about every publication quoting him in their articles. He's sourced watches for the movie Crazy Rich Asians, the talented gals Aly & AJ, amongst many other start-studded collectors. But don't let that scare you away, Eric sources watches of all kinds at all price-points for anybody. Not only does he always keep a great stock on his website, but he's also been sourcing vintage watches for Mr. Porter which is one of the most sophisticated collabs I've seen. Eric has a lot of projects in the works, like his help with the Rowing Blazers x Seiko watches (which you should be seeing another drop very soon), as well as his own podcast, Significant Watches which he shares with a great team. At the end of the day, Eric's one of the few people in the watch industry that not a single person has a bad thing to say in his regard. He's honest, friendly, knowledgeable, and someone I am grateful to have become friends with over the years. Some watch brands never seem to change, while others are constantly trying to re-invent what they do. That's the topic for this episode of HODINKEE Radio and I asked Jack, Danny, and Cole to weigh in with their perspectives on the concept of consistency vs. variety in watch design. As you can imagine, it's another loose and chatty episode that dips into the "Rolex method", brands that aren't afraid to break the mold, how many bands Greenday has actually been, and a whole bunch more. Thanks so much for listening, we'll catch you in the comments at Hodinkee.com. Katelyn Glass of Fifty Six Advertising has devoted over a decade to growing in tandem with the e-commerce world. She started her own marketing agency without having worked for an agency before, but after becoming the first female C-suite executive at Rowing Blazers and scaling the lifestyle brand to #8 on SimilarWeb's 15 fastest-growing DTC brands, she'd proven what knowledge she had acquired in her work. Katelyn focuses on marketing strategies for small brands. This keeps life more interesting, she muses, since each small brand needs a unique strategy to reach their particular goals. And with that point of view, Katelyn joins this episode of E-Commerce with Coffee?! to talk about small brand digital marketing. What to listen for: Katelyn is clearly a coffee fan, and her recommendation for where to get delicious whole beans in NYC definitely doesn't disappoint. Early in the interview, we get a full look at where Katelyn came from and how she landed in the e-commerce world. She jokes that she's “so old” that she “remembers when there was no internet.” One look at her and you see her millennial youth, however, so “old” is a stretch. She truly has seen extraordinary change in how marketing works, though. Listen for her full take on how marketing has changed—even in the last three years—and what the implications are. Small brands don't care about a lot of the nitty gritty details of marketing, Katelyn says, they just want to partner with someone who takes care of it. Katelyn saw this need. Small brand leadership are always those wearing multiple hats, so why should they have to become digital marketing experts, too? Katelyn rose to the call and started her agency with the target of serving these businesses exclusively. “Typical agencies are either too expensive or too robust for what they need,” she asserts. Katelyn also speaks to the greater satisfaction of working with these brands and seeing them grow. It's not just seeing someone walk down the street in the sweater you just helped a brand sell, it's the “total evolution” of the brand (which is longer-lasting than growth). The interview then turns to some specific strategies Katelyn focuses on with brands. “Nine times out of ten,” she says, “brands are underutilizing email marketing.” She also works closely with brands to identify where they are in their marketing now as their customer lifecycle is developed. When asked when the right time is to launch to e-commerce, Katelyn says, “I'm insanely biased and I'll say it's always the right time.” There are more expensive times to do it, without a doubt, but it's always the right time if you haven't gotten into e-commerce already. The interview moves from launching to e-commerce to the pie-in-the-sky idea of DTC brands going global. Listen in for the specific advice Katelyn has along with a clear list of what brands need to consider (payment processing, tax implications, logistics). On the topic of gurus and all the digital marketing courses out there, Katelyn reminds us that it's 2022 and whatever your marketing pain point, “you can google it.” Find the partners who help you make this happen—not the “#1 pro” who only tells you how. “If they were #1 in anything,” Katelyn quips, “they wouldn't be selling their course on Instagram.” The kind of partnership Katelyn recommends is one that leaves listeners feeling braced for anything that comes next.

“The clothes that we think of as elitist came from a place of fun and irreverence,” says Jack Carlson, founder of New York based indie brand, Rowing Blazers. Over the past six years, Carlson and his team have democratised the clothes most associated with stuffy Ivy League and Oxbridge sporting institutions, giving them a new lease of life. We talk about this at length this week, as Aleks explores just how Jack has built a brand that feels fresh and inclusive as opposed to elitist and stuffy. From his dorm room to his mom's garage to a storefront workshop at the Platform in Culver City, Tristan continues to pursue his passion, with surfing and travel as his inspiration. According to Tristan, “After an hour in the water, I get out and I'm ready to create.” Tristan launched STAN in 2019, and In March of 2020 Rowing Blazers wanted to add his designs on their website. His 18 one-of-a-kind blazers sold out the same morning they debuted. A month later, he was invited to show a spring/summer collection at New York Men's Day. The story of how he found fabrics, created 20 jackets in two weeks and rented a 1972 VW Bus to create a video for his Fashion Week debut is delightful. His runway collection was a hit, and he was invited back to present a fall/winter collection. (5:00 – 11:20)Tristan talks about the happenstance meetings that have informed his work. One example he gives is meeting his friend Claire at a sewing shop in Encinitas, San Diego. “This lady came up to me and said, 'What's a good-looking young surfer dude like you doing in a sewing shop?'” They became fast friends, and before long he was a member of the Bumann Quilters of Olivenhain. As it turns out, one of the member's husband's great-grandfathers was an original founder of the Olivenhain Colony founded in 1886. The story of the quilting group and the multi-generational 450-acre homestead created the backdrop for his latest collection. (11:46-16:30)A modern storyteller of ancient textiles, Tristan's favorite part of his sustainable brand is discovering unknown places around the world and unveiling their cultural textile stories for a new generation. Known for his originality and authenticity, Tristan currently has several collections in the works. One of his creations will be featured next to a look by Ralph Lauren at the upcoming Met Gala. When asked what his dream for the future is, he replied, “I feel like I'm living the dream. If I can keep doing this, I can be happy for a long time.” (31:00-39:43) Once you listen to this riveting podcast, you'll want to follow the career of this amazing, authentic talent. Ssense's Krishna Nikhil and 2PM's Web Smith talk strategies for making physical retail exciting at The BoF Professional Summit: What's a Store For? The role of physical retail has changed drastically over the past few years — particularly amid the pandemic — as customers turned to digital channels and brands sharpened their focus on e-commerce. But, physical stores remain an important touchpoint. During this month's BoF Professional Summit “What's a Store For?” Krishna Nikhil, chief merchandising officer & chief marketing officer of Ssense, and Web Smith, founder of 2PM, unpacked the different ways brands are transforming their stores to be more than just a place to conduct transactions. That means thinking about a physical retail space as a means to provide experiences and entertainment that are relevant to their audiences and continue to prioritise service. “It's so important to think about how you create something that is meaningful for the customer,” says Nikhil. “For us, that really started with this idea of ‘how do we reinvent how commerce takes place in the store?'” Nikhil and Web Smith, founder of retail media company 2PM, join BoF's founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed for a discussion about making stores a grounds for immersive experiences without diluting their purpose of obtaining customers. Ssense has streamlined the trying-and-buying process to be more efficient by introducing an appointment service so that customers can spend their time in-store engaging with the cultural programming and the “big moments” the retailer orchestrates — like Virgil Abloh's 2018 “Cutting Room Floor” exhibition, which recreated his studio in the space. “What we are doing is giving both a great experience with product, but also giving time back to that customer… That time back, is about immersion in all the other experiences that we create in the store,” said Nikhil. Pointing to direct-to-consumer start-up Rowing Blazers, which used only about 30 to 40 percent of the space in its flagship for actual merchandise, Smith says product doesn't need to dominate a store. “What are the associated things: the moments, the history, the accessories that you were merchandising with — the history of the industry itself?” he said. “What are those things that you would associate with the sale of those products?” As the line between media and commerce increasingly intersects, brands need to present a specific vision of their point of view to the audience they want to attract. “Products are almost commoditised at this point: anyone can make anything. What makes a product unique right now is the person that's selling it and the audience that they're selling it to,” said Smith. This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by Jack Carlson of Rowing Blazers. They start the show talking about the book “Rowing Blazers” that Jack wrote in 2014 and how that led him from the Rowing community to the Fashion Industry. They talk about the difference between blazers specifically for rowing and regular blazers, how they were originally made for rowing, (specifically one club in the beginning), and how it grew into a wide spread article of clothing. They talk about his time at Oxford studying Archeology to get his Doctorate, how Indiana Jones may have influenced that career passion, and what two ancient civilizations he focused on. They spend some time making comparisons of humans from the past to now, and some of the things humans were able to accomplish without modern technology, and how little he gets to talk about these passions in the fashion world. As they get into the clothing brand that is Rowing Blazers, they talk about their customer base, the pop-up stores that are happening, some of the struggles of entrepreneurialism, and the 3 watches that are coming out as a collaborations with Seiko. Support the pod, check us out: www.patreon.com/clubcool Is anybody even reading this anymore? We start out with some Yeezy talk. As much as I want to be done with the guy, he remains a pop culture fixture, and the man still has his pulse on what's coming next with regards to fashion and streetwear. You know we had to talk Irina and of course touch on the blue puffer jacket thing as well. Next up: just what the hell is Virgil doing with these fifty near-identical Dunks? Like, are they making a thousand of each of these or what? This sort of seems too good to be true (copping-wise) which means there's a lot more going on here than meets the eye. Virgil and Nike are both marketing geniuses, so don't write this off as a lazy throw-away just yet. Finally, before we drop our vacay recaps, we give some attention to the Rowing Blazers x Seiko watches dropping tomorrow (today?). They seem legit. After that, we talk Cali vacations, but mostly we just emphasize our shock/awe that anybody leaves there for here. What the hell is wrong with you people?!?!? Ok, that's it, love you, bye. In #133, futurists tap into an electric conversation with Irene Wu, a 21-year-old venture capitalist investing with Blue Collective, Harvard student, and Founder at The YX Foundation. Irene trained for half her life being the coxswain for Men's rowing teams, committing to Harvard as a student athlete before suffering a concussion that resulted in her taking a gap year. It was Irene's interest in rowing that led her to become obsessed with a streetwear startup called Rowing Blazers, and she ended up cold-emailing the CEO and moving to NYC before she had completed her first year of college to work full-time at a startup. Following her three-year stint at Rowing Blazers, Irene became an investor at Blue Collective, and she's invested in several companies including Doola, Parlor, and Teleportal. In 2019, Irene founded The YX Foundation, a hybrid coalition-design lab dedicated to prototyping at the intersection of deep technology (AI/ML) and critical race theory. If there's such a thing as a *normal* path to founding a fashion brand, Jack Carlson didn't follow it. Before he was a designer and best-selling author, Carlson was an archaeologist who rowed at a national level. But as we discover in this dive into the fascinating and occasionally weird and tradition-bound world of rowing, there's a rich history that blurs the lines of sports, fashion, and cultural anthropology. For Carlson, research turned into a book (celebrated by none other than Mr. Ralph Lauren himself), which turned into Rowing Blazers. We talk about what the brand is, how the distinctive identity was formed, and who it's for (hint — not just rowers), as well as the joys of a good watch and what it feels like to watch TV and see Tan France wearing your blazer. Or the surprise in finding out that multi-Grammy winning rapper Macklemore, has been one of your best customers since day one! Make sure to listen to the end because there's an Easter egg in there for watch fans. This episode is made possible by our sponsor, eBay. Reg (Tiff is online shopping) talks with Mr. PM (aka “Caustic Man” on Instagram) about life in Houston, rocking Wranglers (with no label) and his opinion on Brooks Brothers (and Rowing Blazers and Polo), Ivy style, Prep and Trad. This episode sounds even better with jeans and Top Siders on.
Kari Lizer - Comedy writer ('Will and Grace", "The new adventures of old Christine"), memoirist, and animal lover joins Lisa Birnbach for a far reaching conversation about kids, empty nests, and chickens. What ! Oh, and they talk about Kari's new book "Aren't you forgetting someone - Essays from my mid-life revenge" Of course they also talk about the 5 things that make their lives better.Lisa’s 5 Things: 1. Framing mementos and souvenirs, 2. Covid Skin, 3. Preppy Face Masks from Rowing Blazers, 4. Rosé Wine, 5. Dr. Fauci.Kari Lizer’s 5 Things: 1.Her dogs, 2. Always having a trip in the works, 3. Notebooks (and Uniball pens), 4. Saying No, 5. Ugly underwear.
Jack Carlson’s background is in rowing (he was so good he was on the US national team), but he’s found a new calling in gear. The self-described “streetwear omnivore” built a brand mixing the worlds of preppy style with youthful sportswear, offering everything from hardy, colorful rugby shirts to patchwork Barbour collabs and cheeky send-ups of finance bro style. This all is represented best at the Rowing Blazers flagship store in SoHo, which has been closed due to Covid-19. But now Carlson is using his brand as a platform not just to combat coronavirus through making masks from leftover fabric, but also a way to stand up against racism and acknowledge the influence Black culture has had on taking prep style to a whole new level. Stay tuned for new episodes of Vibe Check every Tuesday and Thursday.
Jimmy and Larry are hitting the high seas this week with none other than Rowing Blazers' founder Jack Carlson. Jack joins the boys to talk through prep's revival, the pizza and soda-based diet of a champion rower, the subtle art of turd hazing and what it's like collaborating with all of your favorite brands. Then, in Captain's Log/Letters to Home, we've got ourselves the FU financial scandal of the century
"That's how my whole career, my whole running career went—it was always trying to beat the guy in front of me, always trying to catch the guy in front of me. And that helped me—not just the training, it wasn't just the training, it was that attitude going into races. And like I said, when I started winning races, I didn't want to win them by one second—I wanted to win them by 90 seconds or 2 minutes. It was always about beating the opposition, annihilation I used to call it." This week's episode is a really special one. I got to have a conversation with my favorite runner of all-time, former marathon world-record holder, Steve Jones. Jonesy, who is now 64 years old, broke the world-record in the first marathon he ever finished at Chicago in 1984, running 2:08:05. He won the race again a year later in 2:07:13—splitting an incredible 61:42 at halfway—just missing the world-record by one second. What I have always loved and admired about Jonesy is his no-nonsense approach to training and racing. He describes it as “running simplified” and it's a philosophy that's had a profound effect on me as both as athlete and coach over the years. The guy was probably the fiercest competitor of all-time: he didn't chase records, he just wanted to run as hard as he possibly could to beat as many people as he possibly could. He once said, “If I'm still standing at the end of the race, hit me with a board and knock me down because that means I didn't run hard enough.” In short: the guy was a total badass. I absolutely loved this conversation and I think you will too: We talked through his two Chicago victories, his New York win in 1988, and what made those triumphs so special. We got into his training philosophy, where it came from, and who influenced him over the years. We discussed how the sport has changed in the last few decades and where he sees it heading in the future. We talked about why he continued to hold down a day job as a mechanic in the Royal Air Force after breaking the world record in 1984. We also got into his current role as a coach, how his relationship with his athletes has evolved over the years, why club running is important to the overall health of the sport, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by Tracksmith. Parts of this interview are featured in the fall issue of Meter magazine, Tracksmith's quarterly journal of all things running and running culture. Meter is available at Tracksmith.com and the latest issue will be free at their New York pop up, which takes place at Rowing Blazers in Soho during Marathon weekend from Friday November 1st until Monday the 4th. This week's Dropcast is all about giving back. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are joined by Jack Carlson, published author, actual rower, and founder of Rowing Blazers, to talk about his recent charitable collaboration with Noah clothing and Row New York. Also joining them is Ball Boyz co-host Ian Servantes—who apparently had nothing better to do.
