一般被认为早期的 Jazz Rap 歌曲是 “Talkin' All That Jazz” , 发行于 1988 年,来自纽约的 Stetsasonic 组合为了回击 James Mutume (Funk 乐队 Mutume 主创)对 Hip-Hop 音乐形式的的批评,旋律采样了 Lonnie Liston Smith “Expansions”;纽约组合 Gang Starr 1989 年首作 "No More Mr.Nice Guy” 中就有几首采样爵士乐的歌曲,这促使了导演 Spike Lee 邀请 DJ Premier 为他 1990 年的电影 “Mo Better Blues” 制作了电影歌曲“Jazz Thing”,这首歌对爵士大家们的致敬使它成为了 Jazz Rap 的经典代表;Gang Starr 的前三张可以被认为是 Jazz Rap,从 1994 的 “Hard to Earn”开始更加硬核;Gang Starr 成员之一 Guru 的 Jazzmatazz 系列,其中发表于 1993 年的 Vol.1 中不仅有当时拥抱融合爵士乐的前辈,也有同辈的跨界爵士乐手和 rapper;纽约集体 Native Tongue 在采样手法上跳出了以往 James Brown 的范围,重要组合 A Tribe Called Quest 从 1990 年发表首张专辑开始就成了 Jazz Rap 高水准的代表,1991 年的 “Low End Theory” 奠定了 90s 东岸说唱的美学,1993 年的 “Midnight Marauders” 更是在制作层面达到新的高度;推荐纪录片 “Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travel of A Tribe Called Quest” (2011)1992 年 Pete Rock 和 C.L. Smooth 的 “Mecca and the Soul Brothers” 是超越时代的制作水平,Pete Rock 制作风格的独特性;以局外人姿态进入 Jazz Rap 场景的组合 Digable Planets 两张专辑都是我们的爱,1993 年的 “Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space” 明显体现出 Butterfly 特立独行的抽象哲思和采样上的想法,1994 年的 “Blowout Comb” 主题更多围绕黑人民族主义主张;来自费城乐队形式的 The Roots 的 “Organix”(1993)和 “Do You Want More?!!!??! Dream Warriors “And Now the Legacy Begins” (1991) , Brand New Heavies “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1” (1992) , 英国 Us3,法国 MC Soolar, Soon E MC,制作人 Jimmy Jay;02. Episode Playlist:A Tribe Called Quest - “Scenario”Stetsasonic - “Talkin' All That Jazz”Gang Starr - “Jazz Thing”Gang Starr - “The Place We Dwell”Guru - “Loungin'" ft. What makes a spy creamy? How important is it for lyrics to make grammatical sense? Has any record ever had a better vibe than this one? These among many other questions are answered by Dad Bod Rap Pod hosts Demone Carter, David Ma, and Nate LeBlanc on this week's look back at Digable Planets' 1994 album Blowout Comb. This record was the last official release for the Planets after their hit debut, Reachin' changed the sound of hip-hop briefly a few years earlier. Blowout Comb is another animal (insect?) entirely, a reflective, subtly swaggering tribute to Trouble Man-era Blaxploitation suffused with Panther politics and a warm, analog sonic palette. While reaction to the album was somewhat muted at the time, this album has become something of a cult classic for folks who like their rap records thoughtful and adventurous. Join us as we reconsider the themes, design, lyrics, beats, and messaging of an excellent slab of Brooklyn bohemianism. DBRP is produced by Demone Carter and released by Stony Island Audio, a swell group of hip-hop know-it-all's. Theme song produced by Cutso, who is in our hearts this week. Love you, P.

If you thought these songs were from Jane's Addiction, it is an understandable mistake. Porno for Pyros was formed in 1992 after the first break-up of Jane's Addiction by members by lead vocalist Perry Farrell and percussionist Stephen Perkins. They added Peter DiStefano on guitar and Martyn LeNoble on bass for their eponymously named debut album. The inspiration for the band's name came from a fireworks advertisement that Perry Farrell saw in a pornographic magazine. Inspiration was also connected to the 1992 LA riots which occurred in the band's hometown. The album Porno for Pyros benefitted from the success of Jane's Addiction and the buzz surrounding the new group. Porno for Pyros began a nationwide tour to support the band prior to the release of the first album. By the time the album was released in 1993 there was a pent-up demand for it, causing it to surge to number 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. With a blend of punk, psychedelic rock and alternative, the album gained both commercial and critical success. The band was impactful on the alternative rock scene, but was short-lived. They would release a follow-up album in 1996 before disbanding in 1998. They would have reunions in 2009 and 2020, and the original line-up has recorded new material as of 2023 to be released as an EP in 2024.Wayne takes us through this alternative rock album. Cursed FemaleThis track was released as the first single as a medley with the song “Cursed Male.” The lyrics reflect the abuse women face in life. It reached number 3 on the Modern Rock charts. “Cursed to be born beautiful, poor, and female, there's none that suffer more.”Cursed MaleForming a medley with “Cursed Female” for the first single, this song turns to the difficulties males face in life. “All the guys that really have the money are too old to have a good time with it...Too old to turn the women on, too old to have a fast car and drive it.”PetsThis is the hit from the album. It deals with dissatisfaction with the human race on the brink of destruction. The song describes how aliens might take over the world and treat human beings as great pets. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.Packin' .25This track has the LA riots as its inspiration. It reflects the idea of people carrying a handgun in order to achieve respect. Interestingly, a 25-caliber pistol is not a very powerful weapon. “I dreamt all yesterday how I might make a man feel with a gun up to his face! Show respect to me. I don't care what you're thinking, I'll wipe that thought away! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers (from the motion picture “Benny and Joon”)Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson star in this film about two eccentric people falling in love. STAFF PICKS:Daughter by Pearl JamLynch gets the staff picks rolling with the second single from Pearl Jam's "Vs." album. It talks about a girl with severe dyslexia whose mother doesn't understand the condition. The lack of understanding prompts the mother to abuse the daughter, thinking she is being deliberately lazy and disruptive. Woman by Brother CaneRob features a deeper cut from Alabama band Brother Cane off their debut album. This grunge-tinted song has a slow, haunting, mournful feel that builds into a faster paced, minor epic by the middle of the song before returning to the slow theme at the end. The singer discusses an unstable relationship. “I used to know better, now I don't know what's worse - having it all maybe, or having nothing for sure.”Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) by Digable Planets Bruce brings us the first single from the debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space).” The lyrics are a celebration of hip-hop, the Brooklyn underground scene, jazz, style, and the confidence of the group. Digable Planets sampled “Stretching” by Art Blakley & the Jazz Messengers for the chorus.Lollipop Serenade by Insane JaneWayne's staff pick is from a local Atlanta band with a female lead. Insane Jane put out two albums, the first called “Each Finger” and the second called “Green Little Pill.” The lead singer was known as “Yellow.” This may be a song that those outside of Atlanta may not have heard before. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Beer :30 by The Reverend Horton HeatWell, it is largely instrumental, if you don't count the occasional “beer” and “get naked” statements thrown in. Chapter 20 - Lord Voldemort's RequestHermione even escorted them down to breakfast, bringing with her the news that Ginny had argued with Dean. The drowsing creature in Harry's chest suddenly raised its head, sniffing the air hopefully. ‘What did they row about?' he asked, trying to sound casual as they turned into a seventh-floor corridor which was deserted but for a very small girl who had been examining a tapestry of trolls in tutus. She looked terrified at the sight of the approaching sixth-years and dropped the heavy brass scales she was carrying.Q1 - What does Secumsempra do?Q2 - Why do people stay together if they are miserable?‘I see,' said Dumbledore eventually, peering at Harry over the top of his half-moon spectacles and giving Harry the usual sensation that he was being X-rayed.Q3 - Do you think Dumbledore is ever using Legilimency on Harry?Q4 - Do you think that the pensieve itself holds ancient magic? Like does it sift through thoughts and give you a better analysis of them?‘But now, Harry,' said Dumbledore, ‘now things become murkier and stranger. If it was difficult to find evidence about the boy Riddle, it has been almost impossible to find anyone prepared to reminisce about the man Voldemort. In fact, I doubt whether there is a soul alive, apart from himself, who could give us a full account of his life since he left Hogwarts. ‘I wonder whether you know what it is, Tom? Pick it up, have a good look!' whispered Hepzibah, and Voldemort stretched out a long-fingered hand and lifted the cup by one handle out of its snug silken wrappings. Harry thought he saw a red gleam in his dark eyes. His greedy expression was curiously mirrored on Hepzibah's face, except that her tiny eyes were fixed upon Voldemort's handsome features. ‘A badger,' murmured Voldemort, examining the engraving upon the cup. ‘Then this was …?' ‘Helga Hufflepuff's, as you very well know, you clever boy!' said Hepzibah, leaning forwards with a loud creaking of corsets and actually pinching his hollow cheek. ‘Didn't I tell you I was distantly des- cended? This has been handed down in the family for years and years. Lovely, isn't it? And all sorts of powers it's supposed to possess, too, but I haven't tested them thoroughly, I just keep it nice and safe in here …'Q5 - What power do magical objects possess?‘That's right!' said Hepzibah, delighted, apparently, at the sight of Voldemort gazing at her locket, transfixed. ‘I had to pay an arm and a leg for it, but I couldn't let it pass, not a real treasure like that, had to have it for my collection. Burke bought it, apparently, from a ragged-looking woman who seemed to have stolen it, but had no idea of its true value –' There was no mistaking it this time: Voldemort's eyes flashed scarlet at her words and Harry saw his knuckles whiten on the locket's chain.‘Time to leave, Harry,' said Dumbledore quietly, and as the little elf bobbed away bearing the boxes, Dumbledore grasped Harry once again above the elbow and together they rose up through oblivion and back to Dumbledore's office. ‘Hepzibah Smith died two days after that little scene,' said Dumbledore, resuming his seat and indicating that Harry should do the same. ‘Hokey the house-elf was convicted by the Ministry of poisoning her mistress's evening cocoa by accident.'Q6 - Why is he collecting these objects?Q7 - Is there anything else in the Hepzibah memory that seems odd to you?‘So, Tom … to what do I owe the pleasure?' Voldemort did not answer at once, but merely sipped his wine. ‘They do not call me “Tom” any more,' he said. ‘These days, I am known as –' ‘I know what you are known as,' said Dumbledore, smiling pleasantly. ‘But to me, I'm afraid, you will always be Tom Riddle. It is one of the irritating things about old teachers, I am afraid, that they never quite forget their charges' youthful beginnings.'Q8 - Why is calling him Tom such a flex?I have come to you to ask that you permit me to return to this castle, to teach. I think you must know that I have seen and done much since I left this place. I could show and tell your students things they can gain from no other wizard.' Dumbledore considered Voldemort over the top of his own goblet for a while before speaking. ‘Yes, I certainly do know that you have seen and done much since leaving us,' he said quietly. ‘Rumors of your doings have reached your old school, Tom. I should be sorry to believe half of them.' Voldemort's expression remained impassive as he said, ‘Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies. You must know this, Dumbledore.' ‘You call it “greatness”, what you have been doing, do you?' asked Dumbledore delicately. ‘Certainly,' said Voldemort, and his eyes seemed to burn red. ‘I have experimented; I have pushed the boundaries of magic further, perhaps, than they have ever been pushed –' ‘Of some kinds of magic,' Dumbledore corrected him quietly. ‘Of some. Of others, you remain … forgive me … woefully ignorant.'Q9 - What is he talking about here?Q10 - What is the magical power of love?‘I am surprised you have remained here so long,' said Voldemort after a short pause. ‘I always wondered why a wizard such as yourself never wished to leave school.'Q11 - Does Tom have a point…why would Dumbledore stay on as headmaster and not anything greater?Dumbledore set down his empty glass and drew himself up in his seat, the tips of his fingers together in a very characteristic gesture. ‘… let us speak openly. Why have you come here tonight, surrounded by henchmen, to request a job we both know you do not want?' Voldemort looked coldly surprised. ‘A job I do not want? On the contrary, Dumbledore, I want it very much.' ‘Oh, you want to come back to Hogwarts, but you do not want to teach any more than you wanted to when you were eighteen. What is it you're after, Tom? Why not try an open request for once?'Q12 - What is he coming back to the school for?‘The time is long gone when I could frighten you with a burning wardrobe and force you to make repayment for your crimes. But I wish I could, Tom … I wish I could …'Q13 - What do you think of this memory?Chapter 21 - The Unknowable RoomHarry fully expected to receive low marks on his, because he had disagreed with Snape on the best way to tackle Dementors, but he did not care: Slughorn's memory was the most important thing to him now.Q1 - How do you think Snape takes on dementors? And is it better than Harry's?‘It's one of Fred and George's Spell-Checking ones … but I think the charm must be wearing off …' ‘Yes, it must,' said Hermione, pointing at the title of his essay, ‘because we were asked how we'd deal with Dementors, not “Dugbogs”, and I don't remember you changing your name to “Roonil Wazlib”, either.' ‘Ah, no!' said Ron, staring horror-struck at the parchment. ‘Don't say I'll have to write the whole thing out again!' ‘It's OK, we can fix it,' said Hermione, pulling the essay towards her and taking out her wand. ‘I love you, Hermione,' said Ron, sinking back in his chair, rubbing his eyes wearily.Q2 - Is this the first time Ron has said “I love you” to Hermione?Q3 - What is Malfoy doing in the Room of Requirement?‘God, I've been stupid,' he said quietly. ‘It's obvious, isn't it? There was a great vat of it down in the dungeon … he could've nicked some any time during that lesson …' ‘Nicked what?' said Ron. ‘Polyjuice Potion. He stole some of the Polyjuice Potion Slughorn showed us in our first Potions lesson … there aren't a whole variety of students standing guard for Malfoy … it's just Crabbe and Goyle as usual … yeah, it all fits!' Q4 - Is Harry (therefore Danny) right?Q5 - Do you ever remember when a teacher embarrassed you?‘Well, what Harry said is the most useful if we're trying to tell them apart!' said Ron. ‘When we come face to face with one down a dark alley we're going to be having a shufti to see if it's solid, aren't we, we're not going to be asking, “Excuse me, are you the imprint of a departed soul?”‘When you say you had lots in common,' said Ron, sounding rather amused now, ‘d'you mean he lives in an S-bend, too?' ‘No,' said Myrtle defiantly, her voice echoing loudly around the old tiled bathroom. ‘I mean he's sensitive, people bully him, too, and he feels lonely and hasn't got anybody to talk to, and he's not afraid to show his feelings and cry!'Q6 - Who is Myrtle talking about here?Q7 - Why was Tonks going to see Dumbledore?Q8 - Was she in love with Sirius?Chapter 22 - After the BurialQ1 - What do you think of Hagrid asking the trio to come out after dusk to the burial?‘Look, Potions will be almost empty this afternoon, with us all off doing our tests … try and soften Slughorn up a bit then!' ‘Fifty-seventh time lucky, you think?' said Harry bitterly. ‘Lucky,' said Ron suddenly. ‘Harry, that's it – get lucky!' ‘What d'you mean?' ‘Use your lucky potion!' ‘Ron, that's – that's it!' said Hermione, sounding stunned. ‘Of course! Why didn't I think of it?'Q2 - Is this the best way to get the memory?Q3 - What do you think of Harry's Euphoria potion?Harry took out the rolled-up socks at the bottom of his trunk and extracted the tiny, gleaming bottle. ‘Well, here goes,' said Harry, and he raised the little bottle and took a carefully measured gulp. ‘What does it feel like?' whispered Hermione. Harry did not answer for a moment. Then, slowly but surely, an exhilarating sense of infinite opportunity stole through him; he felt as though he could have done anything, anything at all … and getting the memory from Slughorn seemed suddenly not only possible, but positively easy …Q4 - What would you use Liquid Luck on?Getting through the portrait hole was simple; as he approached it, Ginny and Dean came through it and Harry was able to slip between them. As he did so, he brushed accidentally against Ginny. ‘Don't push me, please, Dean,' she said, sounding annoyed. ‘You're always doing that, I can get through perfectly well on my own …'Q5 - Was Dean being chivalrous or annoying? After an hour or so, Hagrid and Slughorn began making extravagant toasts: to Hogwarts, to Dumbledore, to elf-made wine and to – ‘Harry Potter!' bellowed Hagrid, slopping some of his fourteenth bucket of wine down his chin as he drained it. ‘Yes, indeed,' cried Slughorn a little thickly, ‘Parry Otter, the Chosen Boy Who – well – something of that sort,' he mumbled, and drained his mug, too.‘But she didn't move. Dad was already dead, but she didn't want me to go too. She tried to plead with Voldemort … but he just laughed …' ‘That's enough!' said Slughorn suddenly, raising a shaking hand. ‘Really, my dear boy, enough … I'm an old man … I don't need to hear … I don't want to hear …' ‘I forgot,' lied Harry, Felix Felicis leading him on. ‘You liked her, didn't you?' ‘Liked her?' said Slughorn, his eyes brimming with tears once more. ‘I don't imagine anyone who met her wouldn't have liked her … very brave … very funny … it was the most horrible thing …' ‘But you won't help her son,' said Harry. ‘She gave me her life, but you won't give me a memory.'Q6 - Is there any new info you gained from the Lily story?‘Be brave like my mother, Professor …'‘You're a good boy,' said Professor Slughorn, tears trickling down his fat cheeks into his walrus moustache. ‘And you've got her eyes … just don't think too badly of me once you've seen it …'Q7 - What will this memory tell them?

In this episode of Sync Music Mondays K. Sparks and JS aka The Best discuss the music industry with special guest Digable Planets. Digable Planets burst onto the music scene in 1993 with their Grammy-winning single, “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)”. Made up of Ishmael Butler (Butterfly), Craig (C Know/Doodlebug) Irving, and Mary Ann (Ladybug Mecca) Vieira, the trio carved out a unique style of jazz- informed Hip Hop. Shortly after, Digable Planets followed up with their debut album, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time And Space), an ambitious offering that Pitchfork praised as “a world within a world, complete with its own language and monuments.” Melding Jazz samples, and complex rhymes that touched on everything from the nuances of city life (“Where I'm From”) to abortion rights (“La Femme Fetal”), Reachin' was a rich and vibrant artistic statement as well as a huge commercial success (RIAA certified gold). B. Cox looks back at hip-hop trio Digable Planet's debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) as it turns 30. The Brooklyn-based group made up of emcees Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Mariana "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving met through what seemed to be fate in the late 80s. After signing to Pendulum Records in 1992, they began crafting their debut album under the production supervision of Butterfly and the likes of Shane "The Doctor" Faber and Mike "Lanching An Attack" Mangini.Using the resources available to them in two makeshift studios in apartments, Butterfly and his cohorts utilized samples from jazz records exclusively, gleaning from Butler's father's collection of jazz records. What followed suit was a project filled with lively jazz notes and deep bass complimented by crisp drum patterns and percussion. This provided the landscape for the three emcees to spit lyrics based around politics, freedom, explorations of expression, black culture and fringe philosophical views with dexterity.Over 57 smooth, yet captivating minutes, the trio developed a unique sound in a hip-hop year full of groundbreaking material. The album's lead single "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" became a top 15 Billboard Hot 100 hit and is the group's signature song. It garnered the group a Grammy in 1994 for Best Rap Performance by A Duo or Group. The album was certified gold and served as the introduction to this unique trio that would have a successful, yet brief time in the spotlight.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comCheck Out Our Clothing and Merch Shop and Cop Some Gear!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Digable Planets Reachin' ( A New Refutation of Time and Space) Turns 30 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/digable-planets-debut-album-reachin-a-new-refutation-of-time-and-space-album-anniversary Pitchfork: Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/digable-planets-reachin-a-new-refutation-of-time-and-space/ClassicAlbumSundays: Forgetting Classic: Digable Planets (A New Refutation of Time and Space). https://classicalbumsundays.com/forgotten-classic-digable-planets-reachin-a-new-refutation-of-time-and-space/RiotFest: Cool Like Dat? Let's face it, finding a truly unique act doing music today can be a difficult thing, which is what makes Pimps of Joytime so special. They're a band that mixes the rare combination of making you dance and making you think, and much of that comes from the mastermind behind the music Brian J. Brian took time to gracefully talk to Morten and Brett via Zoom while on a walk in a beautiful nearby park, and it created a great mood for chatting about music and life. Brian is laid back and very smart, and really captivated your hosts. Check out the show to understand why We Talk Music is so high on this band and their latest release Reachin' Up.
