Jenn Edden, the founder of the Sugar Freedom Method, has experienced firsthand the struggles and challenges associated with sugar addiction.  Her personal journey and dedication to helping others break free from the grip of sugar have made her a respected figure in the field of health and wellness. The Grip of Sugar Addiction Growing up, Jenn realized that her affinity for sugar went beyond a mere preference—it had a powerful hold on her. She observed how different individuals had varying sensitivities to sugar, much like how some people handle alcohol differently.  This led her to delve deeper into the addictive nature of sugar and its impact on our physical and emotional well-being. According to Jenn, sugar addiction is not just about its addictive properties but also its emotional connection. She often compares sugar to a class 5 drug, placing it alongside cocaine and heroin.  She believes that if sugar were to be introduced today, it would be classified as a highly addictive substance due to its physiological and psychological effects. Jenn's own struggles with sugar addiction and her pursuit of better health led her to explore various avenues, including seeking medical help, hiring experts, and experimenting with different approaches.  Frustrated by the lack of sustainable solutions, she decided to take matters into her own hands and developed what is now known as the Sugar Freedom Method. The Sugar Freedom Method Unveiled The Sugar Freedom Method, a 6-step plan, combines Jenn's extensive knowledge of biochemistry and her experiences with multiple health practitioners.  Through this method, she aims to empower individuals to break free from sugar addiction and take control of their health. One key aspect of the Sugar Freedom Method is understanding one's own body and its unique sensitivities. Jenn emphasizes that everyone's body is different, and what works for one person may not work for another.  By encouraging individuals to listen to their bodies and pay attention to how certain foods affect them, she helps them develop a personalized approach to managing their sugar intake. Contrary to popular belief, Jenn asserts that not all sugars are created equal. She cautions against overconsumption of fruit sugars, as they can still have negative effects, particularly for individuals with gut issues or Candida.  The method teaches individuals to recognize how different sugars, even those from seemingly healthy sources like fruit, can impact their bodies and contribute to imbalances. The Sugar Freedom Method does not advocate for complete elimination of all carbohydrates or sugars. Instead, it focuses on reducing and managing sugar intake based on individual needs and sensitivities.  The Freedom to Choose and Be Informed Jenn believes in giving individuals the freedom to make choices while ensuring they are informed about the effects of certain foods on their bodies. The Sugar Freedom Method has helped numerous individuals regain control over their health and break free from the vicious cycle of sugar addiction.  Jenn's personal journey and commitment to sharing her knowledge and experiences serve as an inspiration to many who are seeking a path towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. In this podcast you will learn: The addictive nature of sugar and its impact on physical and emotional well-being The development of the Sugar Freedom Method as a solution The 6-step plan and its focus on personalized health The recognition of different sugars' effects and the impact on imbalances The approach of reducing and managing sugar intake based on individual needs and sensitivities And much more. About Jenn Jenn is a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC and is certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Growing up with depression and anxiety, Jenn has seen the effects firsthand of what sugar can do to your physical and mental well-being. After healing herself of gastritis in her mid 20's and learning how to manage her own addiction, Jenn built a woman run company that teaches other busy female professionals how to kick and manage their sugar addiction without being on a diet or denying themselves of things they love. Jenn's zone of genius is simplifying the complex and clarifying all the dietary confusion out there while teaching women how to live a life they love waking up to! She is also the founder of Unleash Your Inner Boss, a certified coach program for women who saw such amazing results after learning the Sugar Freedom Method that they too want to teach the Method. Share your journey with sugar and health. Jenn firmly believes that sugar is addictive, and we need to break the addiction in order to stop the cycle of addiction you need to understand what is driving it. Throughout the day we are being chased by something we are not addressing, and at night when we stop, it hits us and we turn to sugar to mediate the feelings. Working with sensitive women Jenn uses her power to simplify, and helps them find out what it is they are running from and therefore help them heal and remove the need for the sugar crutch. Why is sugar bad for us? Jenn worked through her own health issues and found that sugar was the main driver. It causes inflammation, destroys our gut microbiome and is the driver for the mid life weight gain that many of us suffer from. She is quick to point out that it isn't a case of never having sugar, but about being aware of why you are reaching for sugar. Once you know why, then you can decide if you really want it, and then, most importantly, enjoy it if you choose to eat (or drink) it. What do you mean by name your strengths, how does this help? In Episode 165 I talk about swapping the jobs you hate with someone for whom it brings them joy and, in Woman Unleashed, Jenn also encourages you to understand and play to your strengths. This can be a difficult task for some, but we all do have strengths and she shares small tasks to help you connect with your inner self and realise what your true strengths are. Give us two simple tips for quitting sugar. Jenn works with busy professional women and she understands that we need short actionable steps to help us unleash our potential: Eat when you are hungry - make sure you have foods readily available to you so that when you are hungry, even if you are busy, you are able to eat - listen to the podcast for some of Jenn's ideas for healthy meals on the go. 1 Day Experiment - everyone can quit sugar, alcohol, caffeine....whatever it is that you are trying to stop....for just one day. So make it a one day experiment that you keep repeating until it becomes a new habit. This epitomises Jenn's no nonsense but simple approach to life. Her strength is to be able to simplify - in a world where there is so much noise and confusion this is a strength we all can benefit from. This week, our guest is Jenny Carr, engaging speaker, author, and leading inflammation expert. Once a professional skier, Jenny found herself bedridden years ago, fighting for her health and at times, literally at the brink of death. Her understanding of the impact inflammation has on the body and mind (regardless of its cause - and there are MANY!) helped her return to a place of true healing, health and restoration. Chronic inflammation shows up in our bodies as bloating, extreme fatigue, depression, and physical aches and pains. Sound familiar? Over 40% of the U.S. population is diagnosed with chronic inflammation (and that’s only counting those who seek medical intervention)! We are quick to attribute these symptoms to “just getting older,” settling and coping with our lot in life. Inflammation’s effects compound when grief enters the picture. In this vicious cycle, stress increases inflammation and inflammation increases stress. We’re here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way! When you acknowledge and address the signs of chronic inflammation in your own body, you create the conditions for healing. Your biological systems begin to operate more efficiently and smoothly, and the physical body can finally feel safe to do the deeper healing work. Jenny guides us through the in’s and out’s of inflammation, educating us on the physiological processes that are taking place, and gives us straightforward and practical steps we can take to support our body through grief, such as deep breathing and drinking more water— powerfully simple, easy to implement actions with profound results!     Topics we covered: The causes and symptoms of chronic inflammation: what’s happening in the body and why. How to recognize and respond to chronic inflammation. The deeper emotional responses and reactions we experience with inflammation. The simplest, most underrated step that you can take NOW towards feeling better (and many other really easy action items!). The food items that exacerbate our symptoms...and foods that help us heal!   Resources Jenny’s website, where you can sign up for her free e-book, “Peace of Cake: The Secret to an Anti-inflammatory Diet.” Connect with her on facebook. As you’ll hear in this episode, this is Jenn’s calling and she’s hugely passionate about the work she does.Jenn captivated me because you don’t often hear sugar and addiction in the same sentence. But when you learn that sugar lights up the same part of the brain as cocaine, you realize how serious this addiction can be. I guess that’s what’s most scary. How many times were you given a lollipop when you were hurt or sick as a child?Jenn is the real deal. Raised in an addictive family, Jenn admits she’s seen a lot. It’s one of the things that makes her such an authority on this subject. She knows her stuff and she’s going to get you to view sugar in a whole new way.Especially if you have kids...“First answer, right answer.”As a mom of three, it’s fascinating to learn how Jenn has drawn from her own experiences and teachings to raise kids who have high self-esteem and strong awareness of their emotions. Jenn and I are talking about sugar addiction and how the way we eat really affect how we feel. We talk about how we can change our mindset on diets. When we believe that doing on a diet is more about feeling better rather than looking better. “Not all sugar is created equal.” - Jenn Edden Jenn mentions a lot about eating things that make us feel good but how do we do this when we are so busy running around checking things off our to-do lists? Jenn shares her tips on how we can start slowing down and noticing how certain things make us feel. A great example is how there is a pause between a craving and eating it. Expand on that pause and use that to ask yourself how that food will make you feel. Jenn shares her near death gas explosion! She felt as though she experienced a rebirth in herself! It’s truly an experience to be around women that have survived something. When that woman is rebirthed, she will stop at nothing! We shouldn’t feel shame if we have some sugar. Jenn says that it’s more about having control with sugar. If you don’t have control over it, that’s when you’re addicted to sugar! Jenn and I go into gut health! We mention our own experience with our gut health. Jenn says that it’s best if you can catch it early, so pay attention to how you are feeling. I ask Jenn what to do when we go out to eat! No one wants to go out to a fancy restaurant and being that friend who only has the salad. Jenn gives us her tips on how to handle and still eat clean! Next, we talk about feeling empowered! An example we share is asking for something extra or remove it when ordering your food. Ladies, there is no shame in that! Instead of feeling like you’re “being difficult”, Jenn says that we are interesting! “Women want to have a life but they also want to feel good!” - Jenn Edden MEET THE GUEST: Jenn Edden is a sugar addiction expert, author, and empowerment coach. I became an anorexic and bulimic for a brief period but still always seemed to have those last 10 lbs to lose. I was a super nervous kid and sugar addict. I mean ADDICT. I could eat a ½ gallon of Turkey Hill mint chocolate chip ice cream in one sitting. Yup. I also remember my mom having to pull me out of school mid-day because I would be sweating so badly that no amount of deodorant or clean shirts would help me. In high school I had TMJ and my mouth would wire shut in for hours on end from being so stressed out socially. The one thing I had going for me is that I always knew there was a better way I just didn't have the HOW at the time. I tried every diet out there and every exercise program… I even tried meditating but could never sit still long enough.… I always wanted to feel better and get those six pack abs but I didn't know the how. I just knew I wanted a better life and body. I also didn't know that eating ice cream, cookies and candy & skipping meals were a huge part of the mind and body problems I was experiencing. We all eat mostly organic and watch the amount of dairy and gluten because all the added chemicals and hormones really do make you feel crazy! And gluten and dairy really do zap your energy when eaten every day.I have also dedicated my life to helping other women, especially women biz owners, who feel like sugar has taken over their life, to take back their power, not through denial or dieting, rather by learning new ways to eat, work and live If they've got a business I help them get clear on where they're headed so they can make mo' money! You see, I've been there with feeling unclear and unmotivated with sugar ruling my every move. I wish I had the knowledge I now possess that gives me the focus and clarity I need to run a successful business while keeping my body in the best shape possible (and balancing a home life with a family!)Did you know that sugar cravings are the body's way of telling you that something needs to change? When my clients start to make changes in their lives and tweak their diets, the cravings start to diminish and their energy shoots up. Yup. The one thing I had going for me is that I always knew there was a better way I just didn’t have the HOW at the time. I tried every diet out there and every exercise program… I even tried meditating but could never sit still long enough.… I always wanted to feel better and get those six pack abs but I didn’t know the how. I just knew I wanted a better life and body. I also didn’t know that eating ice cream, cookies and candy & skipping meals were a huge part of the mind and body problems I was experiencing. We all eat mostly organic and watch the amount of dairy and gluten because all the added chemicals and hormones really do make you feel crazy! And gluten and dairy really do zap your energy when eaten every day.I have also dedicated my life to helping other women, especially women biz owners, who feel like sugar has taken over their life, to take back their power, not through denial or dieting, rather by learning new ways to eat, work and live If they’ve got a business I help them get clear on where they’re headed so they can make mo’ money! You see, I’ve been there with feeling unclear and unmotivated with sugar ruling my every move. I wish I had the knowledge I now possess that gives me the focus and clarity I need to run a successful business while keeping my body in the best shape possible (and balancing a home life with a family!)Did you know that sugar cravings are the body’s way of telling you that something needs to change?
