Sugar is everywhere, and — as with so many things — too much of it is detrimental to our health and well-being. While this is common knowledge for many, most of us are still consuming well more than is recommended, and the topic has gotten even more confusing in recent years with the proliferation of artificial and natural sweeteners. Paul Kriegler, RD, CPT, explains the body-wide health effects of sugar, the pros and cons of the various types of sweet sources, and how we can be more mindful about sugar's place in our diets. For most of history, humans did without refined sugar. After all, it serves no necessary purpose in our diets, and extracting it from plants takes hard work and ingenuity. Granulated sugar was first produced in India around the sixth century BC, yet for almost 2,500 years afterward sugar remained marginal in the diets of most people. Then, suddenly, it was everywhere. How did sugar find its way into almost all the food we eat, fostering illness and ecological crisis along the way? The World of Sugar: How the Sweet Stuff Transformed Our Politics, Health, and Environment over 2,000 Years (Harvard UP, 2023) begins with the earliest evidence of sugar production. Through the Middle Ages, traders brought small quantities of the precious white crystals to rajahs, emperors, and caliphs. But after sugar crossed the Mediterranean to Europe, where cane could not be cultivated, demand spawned a brutal quest for supply. European cravings were satisfied by enslaved labour; two-thirds of the 12.5 million Africans taken across the Atlantic were destined for sugar plantations. By the twentieth century, sugar was a major source of calories in diets across Europe and North America. Sugar transformed life on every continent, creating and destroying whole cultures through industrialization, labour migration, and changes in diet. Sugar made fortunes, corrupted governments, and shaped the policies of technocrats. And it provoked freedom cries that rang with world-changing consequences. In Ulbe Bosma's definitive telling, to understand sugar's past is to glimpse the origins of our own world of corn syrup and ethanol and begin to see the threat that a not-so-simple commodity poses to our bodies, our environment, and our communities. Disneyland Adventureland Treehouse will Return with a New Look in 2023There are more details about the future of the treehouse in Adventureland at Disneyland park. When it reopens in 2023 the Adventureland Treehouse will be themed after Walt Disney's Swiss Family Robinson tree house--just as it is in Walt Disney World. This is likely because Disney is working on a remake of the 1960 movie as a new Swiss Family series on Disney+.The renewed treehouse will have new environments created among the branches of the giant tree on the shores of the Jungle River. Episode 16 is here, fellow obsessees. Remember when Amanda said it was time to give up the fantasy? Well, that thought came and went and the girls are doubling down. Jenae and Amanda trade more deets about the guys visit. While Amanda and Tom were chowing on Big Macs court side, Jenae was shopping for collared shirts and denim skirts for another Daniel visit. In the real world, Amanda‘s anxiety mosquito and hate worm (thank you, Big Mouth) came out to say hello and Jenae pondered attending a boyfriend clinic. Thirty-something Jenae and Amanda also reminisce about their overachiever days. They're still recovering, folks! There's a lot to discover in this new episode so enjoy! (Recorded 6-30-2022)

For National Vanilla Cupcake Day, the show sure was sweet. Shawn from Store 1954 in Sanford, Maine, was our Associate Caller of the Day and also figured out Bo's Impossible Question. It's also National Forget-Me-Not Day, and Walmart World made sure that their fellow associates were not forgotten, like Nathan at Store 1884 in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, who called and gave a shoutout to the digital team for crushing it. Anthony at Store 5251 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, also called and gave a shoutout to the whole store for making it through the remodel. The deli crew at Store 1875 in Severn, Maryland, received a shoutout from Steven, and Darryl from Store 3408 in Carson City, Nevada, gave a shoutout to his whole team. Now don't forget to tune into The Bo Show!
We share some of our creepier stories, our favorite candies, and some of the games news that stood out for us this Halloween season. Episode Art Photo Originally by NeONBRAND on Unsplash
'If someone is named Gord, do not call them 'The Gordster'. Just stop adding 'ster' to the end of names altogether.' 'In high school, we'd prank our friends by putting cheeseburgers under their car door handles... the city should start doing to to people who haven't paid their parking tickets.' 'If I washed my car twice a week I'd need a second job.'
This week, new cast member safety changes, more attractions return ahead of schedule, single rider lines have returned, Avengers Campus is more open, the last Disney Hotel is about to reopen, we talk to Evan about his time as a Cast Member, and more! News: With the higher temperatures on the horizon for Southern California, a new safety policy couldn't come soon enough for cast members. Fully vaccinated cast members can now go mask free outdoors. Masks are still required for all cast members indoors for now. Physical distancing for all cast members, indoors or out has also been phased out. This will greatly help in tight spaces like kitchen areas around the resort. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/06/25/fully-vaccinated-disneyland-employees-no-longer-need-to-wear-masks-outdoors/ and https://www.micechat.com/294044-new-disneyland-procedures-start-june-15-masks-off-no-physical-distancing/ With all of the changes recently to all the safety protocols around the resort, MiceChat posted a guide to all the current policies. These include the new cast member guidelines we talked about previously in this episode, as well as theme park reservations sticking around for the foreseeable future, face coverings no longer required anywhere except for transportation like buses for fully vaccinated guests, un-vaccinated or partially vaccinated guests must still wear masks, physical distancing is no longer required, ride capacity is back at 100% without plexiglass shields, dining capacity has also been increased, indoor queues are back in service, both parking structures are open, out of state guests are allowed, no temperature checks are required, and entertainment has started to return. – https://www.micechat.com/294044-new-disneyland-procedures-start-june-15-masks-off-no-physical-distancing/ A sign that things are coming to an end with the pandemic is the return of single rider lines at a few attractions this week. Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Smuggler's Run, Star Tours, and Splash Mountain at Disneyland, and Radiator Springs Racers, the Incredicoaster, and Grizzly River Run at Disney California Adventure now allow single riders. This should help get as many guests on attractions and out of the lines faster. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/06/26/disneyland-brings-back-single-rider-lines-for-most-popular-attractions/ Some attractions have reopened earlier than expected in the last week! Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Storybook Land Canal Boats both welcomed guests a day or two early. Storybook Land Canal Boats look great and have had a number of their elements updated during the closure. Buzz Lightyear has not been updated and we have seen reports online that some of the attraction vehicles have been tagged out of service. Hopefully maintenance can get to them soon and get Buzz back to 100%! – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/06/photos-video-buzz-lightyear-astro-blasters-soft-reopens-at-disneyland/ Some great news for guests who want to walk around and see Avengers Campus! The land is now open to everyone and the gates that were in place to control the amount of people in the new land have been removed. Guests can now freely enter the land from any of the three entrances. This is making the ability to get food and to enter stores very easy, with little to no wait on most days. – https://www.micechat.com/295081-disneyland-update-topsy-turvy-more-or-less/ For those of you visiting the parks soon, the crowds look to be great! Even though more people are allowed in the parks now, the wait times for attractions have been lower than they were before the lower capacity! This, along with the cast members getting back into the swing of things has made the process much smoother. – https://www.micechat.com/295081-disneyland-update-topsy-turvy-more-or-less/ There have been some rumors that cast members that generally work on parades have been called back to work. This could mean the return of Magic Happens sometime this summer, which only had a couple of weeks to run before the pandemic shut it down. – https://www.micechat.com/295081-disneyland-update-topsy-turvy-more-or-less/ The Disneyland hotel will begin a phased opening this week as the Fantasy Tower opens to guests. Along with the one tower, the two pools and the Monorail water slides will reopen, as well as the fitness center. The Tangaroa Terrace and Trader Sam's will also reopen to the public. – https://www.mouseplanet.com/12971/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_June_30__July_4_2021#news1 Construction has started in the park to prepare for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. The facades of the Toontown Five & Dime and the Gag Factory have been demolished to make way for the new entrance for the attraction. Once completed, the new El Capitoon theater will take their place as the new entrance. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/06/photos-video-toontown-five-dime-and-gag-factory-facades-demolished-as-mickey-minnies-runaway-railway-construction-continues-at-disneyland/ We previously reported that mobile scan and go shopping was being tested in World of Disney in Downtown Disney. Now, that system has been expanded into the parks at the Emporium in Disneyland, and Elias & Co. in Disney California Adventure. Guests will use the Disneyland app or scan a QR code in the store to enter the system, then grab a mobile checkout shopping bag and scan the barcodes with their smartphone cameras to add the item to their cart. Once done, guests check out through the app and show a QR code to a cast member on the way out of the store at a designated mobile checkout exit. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/06/25/disneyland-brings-scan-and-go-shopping-to-theme-park-stores/ Hollywood Land is the place for Avengers photo ops. A new Black Panther photo op has appeared this week in the land. It is the same setup used for the previous Black Panther meet and greet, but without the character this time, due to social distancing. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/06/photos-black-panther-photo-op-arrives-in-hollywood-land-at-disney-california-adventure/ Just a quick follow up to something that we talked about a couple of weeks ago. The food waste trashcans have been rolled out to more locations around the resort recently. If you have any food waste, please dump it in these new recepticals so it can be recycled and not just end up in the landfill. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/06/25/disneyland-makes-tossing-out-leftover-food-a-little-less-wasteful/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/06/disneyland-resort-expands-sustainability-efforts-with-new-food-waste-bins/ On June 27th, which was Global Pride Day, Salt & Straw donated 5% of all its proceeds to local LGBTQ+ charities. For the Downtown Disney location, Reach LA was the charity chosen. Reach LA works with young LGBTQ people of color to “increase self sustainability by encouraging creative expression, supporting safe spaces and promoting health and wellness.” – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/06/26/disneylands-salt-straw-celebrating-global-pride-day-by-donating-to-local-groups/ Another fun treat has made its way to Bing Bong's Sweet Stuff in Pixar Pier. The new Forky cake pop looks like a sweet version of the character himself. The cake pop is sweet vanilla covered in white chocolate, and decorated to look like Forky. Reviews have said that it is pretty moist and very sweet, so be aware of this. Forky costs $5.49. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/06/24/review-toy-story-fans-will-love-disneys-new-sweet-treat/ Donald Duck Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6VVOmT0Vk8 Discussion Topic: Evan

I did a dub mix from the song by Sylvia Robinson, which released 1976 and produced by Sylvia Robinson & Michael Burton, called »Sweet Stuff«. I like the mood of the song and the nice and groovy baseline.

Rise serves Southern Biscuits, Righteous Chicken Sandwiches and Sweet Stuff all day long, waitstaff-free and with a swift service line. Our fluffy, buttermilk and cheddar biscuits are made from scratch and filled with savory ingredients ranging from crispy bacon and country sausage to fried green tomatoes and our famous Righteous Chicken. We opened Rise in Durham in 2012 with a simple vision…serve great food made with premium quality ingredients by people who care. In doing so, we pushed boundaries with flavor combinations and made breakfast fun again. Since then, we've expanded to seventeen locations in North Carolina, Kansas, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee, with new stores on the way. There's a good story that incorporates my love of food and service into the Durham dining culture that bred that in me. The founder of Rise who is a good friend of mine for the last 15 years was bred from the same culture. And it all resonates in Rise and what we do there. I've been really humbled and honored to bring that to Nashville. Nashville food scene: It's absolutely remarkable. Sugar. It's loved, it's feared, and apparently it's in everything. In pop culture, this often leads to it being demonized. At Opal: Food + Body Wisdom, we're debunking sugar myths, normalizing sugar, and talking about how sugar can be a part of any and everyone's attuned eating style. My bathroom is my favorite place to seep my emotions. It's often mopped with tears of frustration, hopelessness, and loneliness. My mint green room (the one I've been wanting to re-paint for years) is my slice of New York cheese cake. It's the place I run to when the loud angry voices from my marriage tell me we're failing. It's where I question why I have no friends. My mint ice cream room is my safe place when my kids touch my last nerve. But, honestly, in the loneliness and craziness of motherhood, grace is the last thing I want to give. So when exactly should we give grace? Welcome to episode #12! Oh it's so good to be back! Momma's I've really had to focus giving myself a dose of grace lately. For those of you who don't follow me, I am just getting back in the groove of things after having my son. This is my fourth child and I've somehow forgotten the added exhaustion of having a cute snuggly baby. And needless to say, the full strength of a freshly brewed coffee also slipped back into my existence. Giving myself grace has always been hard. Giving myself grace when dinner is served through the drive-thru, or as a mixture of things in my bare cabinets. Yes, I've prolonged going to the grocery way too many times. Or in the moments I feel I don't deserve grace. When I can't seem to control my anger and my kids get the scolding mom I told myself I'd never be. Listen to the Passion Brewing Momma's Part 1 of Giving Grace. But, in the midst of my tender emotions, giving others grace is just as hard. When others hurt me, or when I see how my relationships are not what I desire, grace is the last thing my heart wants to give. Maybe you can relate. When we feel our husband doesn't understand us. Or, our friends aren't present in our lives when we need them to be. When our relationships don't meet our expectations, our reactions don't greet grace... Have you ever wondered what it's like when your passion turns into a Christian business? In this episode, we talk with Leah Heffner about how her passion for writing led to a marriage course and her own shop. The fun thing about this episode is that you don't have to be thinking of turning your passion into a business! Leah gives great advice on friendships, balancing mom-life with marriage, and how we can make a big difference right from our cupboards. I truly enjoyed getting to know this momma's story and I hope you do too! Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments below and share with your friends too! About The Life Around The Coffee Cup Momma Want to know what it's like to move 8 or 9 times in a seven year period? Well, you can ask Leah for some advice on how not to pull your hair out! This momma is a strong beautiful wife of seven years. She has three kids and one one the way in July. Both Leah and her husband work at home while balancing homeschooling, 26 chickens, one duck, and a goose. Growing up her family did musical theater together for fun. In high school, volleyball was her thing, but her speech teacher saw a different light of possibility for her. Her teacher desperately wanted her to be on the speech team. But, God had a particular direction for her family. Her dad joined a seminary college leading them to move away. The speech team got crossed off along with the path she could have taken once she graduated. Instead, Leah finished her college degree with a French Education major. We all have our own story worth telling. After Leah taught French for three years, with all the moves, and her second baby she started her own passion for blogging. For her, it was all about finding that community and rhythm and doing that where she was as a mom. Her husband's first business dream started with flipping houses. He started an online business to learn about real estate. But, behind it all, he gained all the marketing information they needed to start their own Christian business. They both love to speak and have ministry ingrained in their hearts. They are a lovely couple with excellent entrepreneur ideas, goals, and expertise. When Your Passion for Writing Turns into a Christian Business Every business is hard to start. But, if you are thinking of turning your passion into a Christian business go into it prayerfully! If you are going into business with your husband, Leah suggests knowing what your comfort level is with each other. And, of course, pray together. Leah and her husband launched The Red Oak Collective six months ago. It all started when Leah wrote encouraging messages on her blog. She would write something compelling and then a lightbulb went off, this would be great on a coffee mug, or a shirt. After a year of this idea brewing, she talked to a designer. Her husband nudged her into making these products for Christian encouragement. Leah and her husband have a mindset for marketing and business. She found a very logical fix for keeping that encouragement we want to stick with us, stay with us! As she puts it, we consume so much content every day, but if you have something that really sticks out to you, don't you want to carry it around with you! The cool thing about The Red Collective's products is that every item has a story behind it! Listen to the episode to find out more behind their creations and store! Want to hear some more exciting news? Leah is launching her own podcast soon and her husband just launched his! It's called Our Daily Rest Podcast with Matt Heffner. His encouraging words will be added to The Red Collective's products too. Visit the full article on When Your Passion Turns into a Christian Business on the Passion Brewing Momma Blog! Welcome to Episode #10, where you can finally give yourself grace! Do you ever wonder how to give yourself grace when you continually fail at everything? If we sat down and had a cup of coffee together, you'd see how similar our struggles are. My life is busy. Some days, I fix cereal for dinner. The clacking of my dog licking the bowl off the table quickly follows. My feet constantly step on metal cars lined in rows. It's easier to ignore when my mind enters a state of exhaustion instead of asking my son to pick them up, once again. I've grown accustomed to the sight of chaos in my house, but some days the weight of life, and motherhood push all the buttons around me. Then I drive myself into an extreme amount of guilt in everything I do. Those dishes are still sitting waiting to be done. If you were a good housewife those would be finished before your husband came home. Did you just hear yourself with that tone? If you can't control those reactions you are going to fail as a parent. I know you've seen this form sitting here a dozen of times this week. Why can't you get it together? Now it's going to be late. The nagging inner voice leaves me feeling discouraged. Do you hear it, too? Why is Giving Yourself Grace Important as a Mom? It's easy to get wrapped up into who we are not, rather than who we are. As mothers, it's easy to measure our value by what we accomplish, or by how we handle the hair-pulling, head-spinning moments. But, when we give ourselves a dose of grace we can learn to fully love who we are. We accept to love and forgive ourselves unconditionally. Sometimes we just need to let go of that to-do list! For some of us we need to trash those harsh criticisms we throw at ourselves. By giving ourselves grace, we learn to love the mom we are, not the mom we envy. Visit the full article on Dear Momma, Give Yourself a Dose of Grace on the Passion Brewing Momma Blog! ----more---- Here's an Outline of the Sweet Stuff in Episode Ten: What grace means Why giving yourself grace as a mom is important How grace can be contagious The grace challenge Once you listen, feel free to leave a comment/suggestion/question below. Welcome to episode number 8 where we dig into 7 healthy habits for moms. After stumbling across a momma with a passion for fitness I noticed she also encourages mompreneurs to live a healthier lifestyle. Not only is she an advocate for health and wellness, but she helps women and small families build their business brand and identity. Let's just say I have a hard time choosing between the right food for me and purchasing a family size bag of Oreos. How do I know if eating healthy and getting my body into exercise mode is really worth it? Our special momma, Rosemarie Gonzalez, walks us through healthy habits to live by from her personal struggle of balancing her calling and mom-life. I truly hope you find her story as inspiring and encouraging as I do. Make sure to share with your friends and comment below. About the Birth N Wellness Hub Momma Rosemarie is a lovely wife and mom of four beautiful children from ages 3-12. She's a New Yorker who is foremost passionate about following Christ. After ten years of holding a passion for graphic design, a new passion emerged from her own personal experience. After two c-sections, Rosemarie delivered her third child naturally. She decided she wanted to educate women on finding the best choice for their child-birthing options. As she puts it, some women don't know they have more than one option. Moms can actually interview other physicians to find the best one that suits her plan for delivery. However, she's a strong advocate of helping women tap into their God-given instincts for a natural birth. Not only is she a mom with a passion for graphic design and doula services, she owns another passion from another journey in her life. Through the motions of motherhood and as a business owner she lost sight of her own health. So, that's when her passion to be a fitness coach blossomed. Now, she's a writer and encourager on the online platform at Birth N Wellness Hub. Here you will find Rosemarie's callings wrapped together to bless many women among her. She dives into mommyhood, wellness, fitness, and birthing stories and options. Here are 10 workouts she recommends for busy moms. Visit the full article on 7 Healthy Habits for Moms on the Passion Brewing Momma Blog! ----more---- Here's an Outline of the Sweet Stuff in Episode Eight: Rosemarie's passion for graphics design, childbirth education, and health & wellness How she balances mom-life and time for her 7 healthy habits for moms with a passion and mompreneurs An inside peak of what she does as a doula How to start having a passion for encouraging healthy living Once you listen, feel free to leave a comment/suggestion/question below.
