It is the wood that the rock greats have sworn by—swamp ash, in the form of their Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars—for over 70 years. If you've ever listened to rock, you've probably heard a swamp ash, solid body guitar. But now, climate change is threatening the wood that helped build rock and roll. In today's podcast, veteran guitarist Jim Campilongo takes us through the finer points of swamp ash and what it would mean to lose it.  Bonus material: Here's Jim showing the difference between the sound of a solid body swamp ash guitar and a hollow body one.  And a little about Jim latest project: Campilongo teams up with longtime collaborator Luca Benedetti on the album, " Two Guitars ." Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

This week's guest is incredibly creative Telecaster-slinger, Jim Campilongo. I've been trying to get Jim on the show for a while now and it finally worked out. Jim is one of the finest modern players associated with the Telecaster and has worked for decades on playing and composing music around the New York and Bay Areas. While getting to be known as one of the finest musicians in a city full of great musicians, he chose to mostly stick close to home and hone his craft with weekly gigs in New York for almost 20 years! He has released a number of incredible albums with his trio, and lately also with the group Honeyfingers. Jim also had a band with Norah Jones for a while called The Little Willies. Campilongo is also a veteran teacher and has a wide range of amazing material on his site to delve into. Please check out jimcampilongo.com for more on that and what he's up to. Meanwhile, we have a couple of callers at the beginning, including my old friend Fats Kaplin, who called in to talk a bit about John Prine on the week after his passing from COVID complications. We continue to welcome callers to talk about the virus and how it's affecting your life in the music scene or as a fan of music. Call and leave a message at 615-375-6318 to be heard on an upcoming show. If you want to skip straight to the interview, it begins at about the 15-minute mark. Enjoy my conversation with Jim Campilongo, and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast, and join us on social media!

How To Fix The Music Business

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2016 50:43

Vinyl junkies - I’m one of them. Possessing an opiate-like addiction for our preferred musical format, we tolerate, no we embrace it's inherent limitations and inconveniences. Pulling a treasure from our Ikea Expedit shelves (actually Kallax is the new thing), we cross apartment room floors that sag from the weight of our collections to put a record on the turntable. But first comes the romance of arcane cleaning and calibration rituals, the Holy Trinity of tracking weight, azimuth, and overhang, and then the battle with the Four Horsemen of the vinyl apocalypse: surface noise, orange peel, non-fill, and off center pressings. After 20, 22 minutes maximum of blissful immersion, the stylus bumps against the end groove, vup, vup, vup, and its time to get out of the chair, somnambulant, and flip over the record. Straight people observe this behavior and say, “umm, wouldn’t it be easier to just listen to this stuff for free on your phone?” So what does an archaic physical format and the weirdos who are obsessed with it have to do with fixing the music business? We’ve been told again and again that music has little or no value as a product, that access to it is easy and free, that the days of record stores and physical collections are a quaint notion of the past. And yet, at the most unlikely of times for a rebirth, these old things, these pieces of art, have stirred passion and a connectivity to music and the artists across age brackets. Why? Is it a hipster trend? Foolish nostalgia? Or does listening to vinyl awaken a musical mindfulness that downloads and streaming don’t deliver? My guest on the show today is Billy Fields of WEA Distribution - that’s Warner, Electra Atlantic in case you didn’t know. Billy is the “vinyl guy” at WEA and certainly qualifies as a record junkie. When I walked into his office at 50th and Broadway in NYC, he was spinning a Siouxsie & The Banshees record, and it was loud. And when his boss came in for a minute to chat, he didn’t turn it down, not even a little. Billy shares his thoughts on the business realities of vinyl, how labels choose what to release, the challenges facing record stores, and the tangible passions that music on wax inspires. Shotgun Wedding draws from a wellspring of country, Americana, alt-country, rock n’ roll, and the boogie-and-stride piano tradition. With reverent intentions and restless creativity, the five-piece band has boldly settled its own authentic homestead. The group boasts four very individual and accomplished songwriters and lead vocalists, and sumptuous four-voice harmony passages. Shotgun Wedding has garnered favorable comparisons to Asleep At The Wheel, Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks, Little Feat, Zac Brown Band, and Shooter Jennings. The band cites influences as diverse as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Speckled Red, Professor Longhair, AC/DC, Jim Campilongo, and Karen Carpenter. Shotgun Wedding is Dennis DelGaudio, guitar/vocals/bandleader; Wade Preston, piano/ vocals; Catherine Porter, vocals; Andy Cichon, bass/vocals; and Chuck Burgi, drums. The quintet has the rare distinction of being fulltime acclaimed musicians with impressive resumes pursuing a passion project out of sheer love of the music, their chemistry as a creative unit, and the deep bond of friendship they share. Charlie sat down with Guitarist Jim Campilongo and had what might be the purest guitar conversation to date on the show. The show opens with Jim’s stunning version of “The Minute Waltz” by Chopin. Nuff said. What transpires is actually only a part of a two hour conversation that followed. We will release some extra […]

Rockabilly is a kissin' cousin of Jazz, with twangy tone and playful techniques disguising an often very sophisticated harmonic and melodic structure. Jim Campilongo lays out some of that tricky stuff-arpeggios, altered tones and substitute chords- in clear detail, giving you enough ideas to fuel your playing for weeks to come.
