This interview was recorded at the Henderson County Justice Center on Wednesday, July 7. == In this week's episode, Sheriff Botie Hillhouse covered additional charges that were added following an arrest for child pornography, new K-9 deputy Valco, and the near-miraculous restoration of the original Sheriff's Office Facebook page. I. Stats (1:22) At the time of this podcast, there were 417 in custody in the jail; 101 of those are out-of-county contract inmates. We talk all the time on the podcast about the importance of out-of-county inmates because they bring revenue into the county. Sheriff Hillhouse said he is projecting that the jail will make between $1.8 and $1.9 million in 2021 through contract inmates. II. Child Pornography (4:20) Last week, the Sheriff's Office arrested Jose Alfaro in Athens for possessing more than 150 child pornography videos. In addition, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a federal detainer on him because he is in the country illegally. During the podcast, Sheriff Hillhouse discussed how the county has prioritized crimes against children. The Sheriff's Office has three dedicated investigators working on these types of cases. "The statistics will show you that it is needed, unfortunately, here in Henderson County," Sheriff Hillhouse said. III. Welcome Valco (10:18) The newest deputy at the Sheriff's Office is K-9 Valco, who came on board this week. https://twitter.com/HendersonCoTx/status/1413165116850323457?s=19 Sheriff Hillhouse, who was a K-9 handler during his career, discussed the importance of the program and how much ongoing training there is between K-9 and handler. "They pay for themselves three-fold, over and over again, they are well worth their money," he said. Sheriff Hillhouse also pointed out the K-9 program is paid for through drug arrest forfeitures. IV. Facebook Back! (19:13) Sheriff Hillhouse was locked out of Henderson County Sheriff's Office Facebook page on April 6. Since then, he has tried repeatedly to restore access. The  Boston public media outlet GBH News did their report in two insallments and today we have one of the investigative reporters as our guest.  Jenifer B. McKim is a senior investigative reporter at GBH News.. She focuses on social justice issues, including criminal justice, child welfare, sex trafficking and personal debt for print, digital and broadcast. McKim's investigations have earned numerous awards, including the national Edward R. Murrow Award, a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and the Freedom of Information Award from the New England First Amendment Coalition. She was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service. In the first installment of the series, McKim and fellow reporter, Phillip Martin bring us the perspective of two New England men who survived commercial sexual exploitation as children and are now taking the rare step of speaking out. The second installment dives more into the relationship between sex trafficking and race and centers around Jose Alfaro. As a homeless gay teen, Alfaro was offered a place to stay by a much older man. It seemed like an answer to his prayers, until this man, Jason Gandy, turned out to be a sex trafficker.   With co-host Brody Levesque

Listener discretion is advised.Jose has experienced so much in his life that would be unimaginable for many. While growing up in a small town in Texas, Jose was terrified to come out as gay to his family—particularly his physically and mentally abusive father. After coming out, Jose's family was not accepting. The rejection he faced from his parents played a role in leading Jose to rely on other ill-intentioned adults. Unfortunately, what happened next included a pattern of sexual abuse, manipulation, and sex trafficking at the hands of his abusers who, at the time, disguised themselves as men wanting to help Jose. Jose’s story of being sex trafficked as a male who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community is not one that is often told—even though those in the LGBTQ+ community regularly experience exploitation. Jose is now a public speaker, author, advocate, activist, and sex trafficking survivor who is sharing his story to help shed a light on these issues. After 3 months he was able to get out of the situation physically, but mentally its something that took work and that he has been carrying with him for years. Many underdeveloped parts of the world are surrounded by water but in order for the people who live there to survive, it has to be trucked in over great distances. Desalination has not been feasible until now, thanks to an innovative way to involve solar power. Jose Alfaro’s with the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability and has been testing this out in Mexico.  Waste water doesn’t need to be seen as ‘waste’ but rather as a way to make money.   There are 16 thousand wastewater plants in the US and Dr. Kelvin Okamoto, who heads up Gen3Bio transforms algae from waste water into revenue.
