Not only will these five pillars improve adaptive capacity, but they are the key to preventing the most common lifestyle diseases plaguing society (i.e., diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease)." - Dr. Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! Hoff has been called “The female Michael Phelps.” Former American Olympian, she is multiple Olympic medalists and previously held world records in both the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley. She competed in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, winning silver medals at both. Katie is best known for her individual medley, and she holds the current American record for the 400-meter individual medley and previously held the American records for the 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle. In July 2014, Katie experienced a sharp pain in her chest and sides, which forced her to withdraw from the National Championship. She initially had been diagnosed with a muscle strain and asthma when a CAT scan revealed two blood clots in her lung. Due to the buildup of scar tissue in her lung caused by the blood clots, Katie officially announced her retirement from swimming in 2015. Hoff said being compared to Phelps was an honor – which she didn't discourage at the time because it made her feel special. By not winning any gold medals, though, “the way that it framed my 2008 Olympic Games was in a negative light,” Hoff said. “Looking back, it wasn't the best meet of my life, but it was a solid meet, so that was a hard pill to swallow. Hoff explains that "Eight gold medals wasn't in her blueprint, as much as she wishes it was.." At the end of the day, Katie says she is in a much better place now and has peace. She's also found a career doing motivational speaking, which she loves. Katie brings the energy and charisma you associate with an elite athlete - coupled with the friendly charm and straight talk of a good friend. She spent fifteen years relentlessly driving her own performance in competitive swimming from local star to national darling to international champion in her sport. What does it take? Katie will tell you. Please help me welcome to the We Do Hard Things Podcast, Katie Hoff. Hey there, I'm Mark Drager. You may not know me (yet) but:

You can either pay through the form of discipline now or the pain of regret later. Discipline is cheaper than the pain of regret. Action Ends Suffering – Professionals know that action creates feeling. Amateurs believe feeling creates action. Be the professional of your life and take action today, don't wait around for the next day you feel like it, or it will never get done.Love What You Do – Become obsessed with your goals. If part of your energy is used convincing yourself to try the idea, you're wasting energy. If you love something, use all your energy to work harder on your goals and achieve them sooner.Hold Yourself Accountable - Set daily goals. Keep track and hold yourself accountable for your mistakes. It is an important tool for building habits and progressing. Nobody Achieves Greatness On Their Own – Surround yourself with the people who encourage you to be your best self. We all create imagined blueprints for how we want our lives to unfold—but what happens when things don’t go according to plan?Today’s guest knows a thing or two about managing pressure, prioritizing intention over expectation, and transforming disappointment into gratitude.Meet Olympic swimmer Katie Hoff.Dubbed, for better or worse, ‘the female Michael Phelps’ Katie is an 8x world champion that made her first Olympic Team at the ripe age of 15, the youngest member of the 2004 USA Swimming Team. She won 5 first place Olympic berths at the 2008 Olympic Trials, took home 3 medals in Beijing, and over the course of her career toppled more than a few American & international records, accruing 8 world championship titles along the way.But Katie’s story isn’t what you think it is. It’s not some totally unrelatable Olympic fairy tale, filled with empty platitudes and cliché mottos. It’s a story about not living up to the expectations the world set for you. What’s most interesting about Katie is that she’s an athlete that should have had a far more decorated career. So what happened?Today we explore her storied career, covering the complicated mental and emotional implications of elite performance, as well as the external forces beyond an athlete’s control. We dissect the vertigo-inducing success Katie experienced at such a young age. The insane pressure she faced that accompanied high highs, the bitter disappointment she experienced by failing to live up to unreal and unfair expectations, and the process of picking up the pieces and moving forward with life in the wake of dreams unrealized. And of course, the valuable and applicable life lessons extrapolated along the way, which she chronicles in her book, Blueprint: An Olympian’s Story of Striving, Adapting, and Embracing The Suck.Katie is an absolute delight and our exchange is littered with gems—big ideas on managing stress, expectations, and knowing when and how to push your limits. To read more click here. Stephanie Rice took gold in three events, her only three events in Beijing, the 200m IM, the 400m IM and then was part of the Australian 4x 200m freestyle relay winning team. Not only did Stephanie win 3 gold medals across the one week of swimming but every time she took to the pool in Beijing she broke a world record. Leading into the Beijing Olympic Games at the Australian swimming trials, Stephanie had broken the world record in both the 400 and the 200m individual medley. However her American nemesis Katie Hoff had bettered the mark at the US Olympic Trials just before the Olympic Games. During this episode Stephanie shares how she handled the pressure despite her coach's instructions to not break the world record. We talk about how Stephanie managed to pull herself together after winning her first gold medal which was also incidentally Australia's 400th Summer Olympic Games Gold Medal and the first Olympic Gold for the 2008 Australian Team. To recover from being unwell to then get ready for the 400 IM. We discuss why Stephanie knew that she wanted to be an Olympian from the age of 3 years, how Susie O'Neill inspired Stephanie. We talk about what it took leading into Beijing, 4 years of grind and hard work plus all the years before that and then the 4 magical days in Beijing. Why Stephanie was not interested in working with a sports psychologist, why getting up at 4:37am was the perfect time. And then we talk about the tough years following Beijing for Stephanie after she underwent shoulder surgery and leading into the London Olympic Games preparing for that with just half of the swimming volume she would have done.
