The Bill Walton Show

Our guest on this episode of Backstage with Bill Walton is Bill's cardiologist Dr. Joshua Yamamoto who has some startling and optimistic things to say about our heart health.  “There is almost no such thing as heart disease: it's just natural aging and you can manage it,” declares Josh. “We now look at aging not just as a bag of diseases, but as a process.” While health issues are not normally among our Show topics, unlike our polarized politics, our personal health is something we can actually do something about.  The biology of aging is no longer mysterious. If we start paying attention when we are young, heart and blood vessel health is knowable, measurable, and manageable.  In You Can Prevent a Stroke, Dr. Joshua Yamamoto and Dr. Kristin Thomas help us understand what we can do, and what we can ask of our doctors, to manage the effects of aging on our circulation so that we do not have a stroke.     Josh Yamamoto is one of America's leading cardiologists with a degree in physics from Princeton University and who trained at Dartmouth Medical School, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, National Naval Medical Center and Georgetown University. He was the cardiology consultant to the US Congress and Director of Cardiac Imaging and served in Kuwait as the theater cardiologist for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  “Old school” medicine said that if something isn't broken, don't fix it. A great emphasis was placed on symptoms. What are your complaints? If you don't have a complaint, then all must be well. Not necessarily.  To keep your brain (and yourself as a whole) healthy, you need to know the answers to the questions:  1. What is the actual health of my heart and circulation?  2. What can I do, or what can I do differently, to keep my circulation working as safely and efficiently as possible?  Fundamentally, these are the only questions you need to ask. The questions are simple, but the answers are different for every one of us. “The leading cause of death is supposedly heart disease. And I always roll my eye at that notion because heart disease isn't simply one thing. It's like if you take your car to the mechanic, and he says, "Oh, I know what's wrong. You have engine trouble." Really? How did that help? So, you have to understand what are all the processes affecting the heart.” “A famous bioethicist once said that there is no meaningful life after the age of 75, so why should anyone go to the doctor after that point?”  “In my practice, I can spend an entire day and see no patient younger than 90. And they are active and healthy, and enjoying life. I have 96-year-olds still wearing suits to the office. I have a 106-year-old complaining that no one will dance with her. I have an 89-year-old who wanted a stress test to make sure he could keep up with his new girlfriend (who in fact is older than he). I prescribe plenty of Viagra.” This is just a sampling of Josh's original thinking, deep insights and humor. Listen in and learn how to anticipate, navigate and manage the aging process.

Today I'm excited to bring you a really insightful interview with Kristin Thomas. No matter what health issue you might be facing, my guest shares the lifestyle approaches, self-care and boundaries that helped her heal and may just help you as well. Kristin Thomas is a Forbes-recognized top business coach with an inspiring health turnaround story. While she was working for fast-paced startups in her early 20s, lifelong gut issues became severe and led to an autoimmune diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. After heavy duty medications failed to help, she eventually turned to a multi-layered lifestyle approach that stopped her symptoms and ultimately put her UC into remission. In this episode, we discuss… The gut-health struggles that led to an autoimmune diagnosis of ulcerative colitis The heavy-duty medications that failed to prevent flare-ups Some of the conditions that accompanied UC for her, including anxiety and depression The role of acupuncture and functional health coaching in her healing The gut conditions she found behind her ulcerative colitis such as parasites, Candida and other bad bacteria What a customized healing diet looked like for her How she supported her body to heal, including addressing her adrenals and other hormones How this driven woman learned to embrace self care – and build those habits into her schedule – to protect her health The role of emotional healing And how all this changed the course of Kristin's career   Kristin Thomas is the founder of Health & Wellness Business School and is a top marketing & business mentor to many of the leading experts in the health and wellness field. She's been an entrepreneur for over 10 years: first she founded a sought-after marketing agency in the high tech industry, then after going through a multi-year journey with autoimmunity, she pivoted and started a highly successful functional health coaching practice focused on gut health, and now her work has come full circle where she mentors other top health practitioners to grow and scale their business for greater impact and income. Ultimately, her mission is to help make a measurable impact on today's disease epidemic by giving her clients the industry-specific support and strategies they need to reach multiple more clients. On this episode, we're talking to FDN-extraordinaire, Kristin Thomas! While Kristin is now focused solely on helping other FDN Practitioners and health coaches run successful businesses, before this, her health was a mess. She dealt with debilitating pain in her gut, and this landed her in the hospital on numerous occassions. Like so many of us stuck in the cycle of trial and error (trying medication after medication and visiting doctor after doctor without relief/success), Kristin eventually realized she'd have to go elsewhere if she wanted to avoid surgery. Thankfully for her, there was systems out there that were able to get to the bottom of what she was dealing with, the most impactful of which was the FDN system! Kristin's success in working with her own FDN practitioner led her to pursuing the course herself and starting her own FDN business. Within months of beginning, she had already developed a wait-list practice, and was able to do the work full-time! Because of her success, Kristin now takes both her background in marketing and FDN to help other practitioners start their own successful businesses. In this episode, Detective Ev and Kristin will cover her health challenges for the first 30-35 minutes, and biz questions after that!  About Kristin: Kristin Thomas is the CEO & Founder of Health & Wellness Business School, a nationally recognized business and marketing school helping health and wellness practitioners to authentically increase their impact and income. At the beginning of this year in February, I put on a summit called The High Ticket Wellness Summit. It had thousands of attendees, dozens of speakers, and a ton of incredible information on how to grow a business, get your message out there and attract more customers. Of the dozens of speakers, there were a few talks that really stood out, made an impact on me, and that I thought were exceptionally valuable.   One of the people that I have a huge admiration for in the health and wellness space because of her own story and her own health journey as well as the brilliance in how she shows up in her work is Kristin Thomas.  She was one of the first ones to be interviewed and it was for very good reason because she is absolutely incredible in how she does her messaging and she is an amazing teacher. She is getting new health coaches success all the time in her programs by just teaching them to communicate better on social media, emails, and wherever else they share their message.  This talk is all about health and wellness entrepreneurs but even if you aren't a health and wellness entrepreneur this information is still going to be able to have a big impact on your business especially if you are just getting started, going through a pivot, or if you have been at this a while and still don't feel like you know what your message is.  Show Notes: The best messaging is designed to attract the right people and repel the wrong people.  Create your content with a hook.  The hook is the very first line in your content that speaks to something they are going through.  You have 3-5 seconds maximum to capture somebody's attention online.  Use down-to-earth language. The more you make somebody think or have to think when they are reading free content they are going to scroll on by.   And so much more!!! The Direction Not Perfection podcast grew from my desires to reach as many people as I could with information that will help them become and stay healthy. I had no idea how much I would love producing a podcast. In creating the past 113 episodes I have become incredibly energized and fueled by the people I have had the privilege to interview. I spend so much time immersed in each subject leading up to an interview and then working on each episode, that I literally have the feeling of missing some of these individuals when we are finished. Another pleasant surprise is how much I use their content all the time! The wisdom that exists through these interviews is invaluable. I can refer my clients to specific episodes to hear professional advice pertinent to their struggles, that can speak to them and gently introduce a topic that might be habit changing, comforting or inspirational. Biden's blunders have destroyed America

In less than 90 days, our country's citizens will be charged with electing the next leader of the free world. On one side, we have a touted leader of business who, from the onset of his presidency, has erupted our nation into an unforeseen global enterprise. Our country's 45th president has defied the traditional political arenas and stuck his finger into the chests of those who wish to establish socialism among these United States.  On the other side, we have a basement-dwelling Joe Biden, too scared to crawl out from the confines of his Democratic dungeon. Too afraid to accept the challenge to lead in a time of crisis; and too busy riding the coattails of former President Obama to understand that the role of government is small, like his understanding of time, place, and race.  I want to jump right on in on Joe Biden, folks. In case you missed it, earlier this week, during an interview with National Public Radio, the Democratic frontrunner attempted to draw distinctions between Black and Hispanic populations in the U.S. "Unlike the African American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community with incredibly different attitudes about different things."  What the heck did he say? Honestly, we all by now have seen some quality gaffes - heck, Bidenese language has been around for decades. But folks, yet again, we have a career politician, a former 8-year Vice President, and the DNC pick for Pres yet again, showing his true colors and sentiments against the black race in America.  And yet again, Biden gets a pass. On Friday morning, MSNBC, CNN, and other cesspools of anti-conservative collaboratives extended yet another pass to ole' Joe. Of course, anytime Joe gets off the teleprompter, there is absolutely nothing he will not say. No limits! But honestly, getting Biden off-script is a lot like getting someone drunk - call it inhibitions? - call it honesty? Call it whatever you want. But if you want to know how someone feels, get them drunk. If you want to know how Biden truly thinks about black people? - just ask him without a prepared speech.  Biden's vision for blacks in this country is insuring that they drop a vote in the ballot box for him - there is no compassion, there is no empathy - just a Biden-bubbled mark on a ballot, folks. It would appear that some black political leaders around the country have noticed Biden's comments and issued concerns, particularly among young black voters.  Younger black activists and elected officials say this week's Biden blooper could make it harder for him to get "their votes." It would appear that Biden has wooed the older African-Americans. After all, it was the old Black establishment in S.C. that helped Biden score his first victory in the 2020 Democratic primaries, which helped propel him into the nomination.  Kristin Thomas of Equal Ground, an Orlando-based group, working to boost turnout among Black voters across Florida, said she hears concern from people in her community and voters across the state.  Thomas said in an interview: "What I'm seeing and what I'm hearing among young black voters is that Biden was not their first choice, so folks are not excited to vote for him this November, every gaffe makes it harder for Biden to generate that excitement. I want to shift gears for a moment and speak on some other Biden bloopers. Earlier this week, as I sipped my coffee and enjoyed my breakfast, I saw Biden's latest political ad. Some of you may have seen it, but the newest phrase and slogan coming from his camp is "Build Back Better."  Of course, Biden and the Democrats are attempting to stand before the country and attack Trump on the economy and its current state as a direct result of the coronavirus that has decimated economies and markets across the globe.  In this new ad, Biden is leeching onto Trump's tried and true stance on "America First." Biden's claimed new economic policy centers around remaking "American manufacturing and innovation so that the future is made in America by all of America's workers," you know, the ones that he left deprived and in a state of utter destitution during his 8-years as Vice President.  Biden claims his "Buy American" plan includes an injection of $400 billion in procurement investment to "power new demand for American products, materials, and services" and $300 billion in research and development, including for electrical vehicle technologies and artificial intelligence, to boost "high-value manufacturing" jobs in the country. Since WWII, the campaign calls the plan the "largest mobilization of public investments in procurement, infrastructure, and R & D." Under Barack Obama, Joe Biden is solely to blame for this mess that our nation's economy is facing under the coronavirus. Don't get me wrong; Trump has done a fantastic job during his short tenure as President.  Under Obama, the North American Free Trade Agreement and allowing China to enter the World Trade Organization destroyed manufacturing jobs here in the U.S. Somewhere between 800,000 and 1-million jobs was almost immediately lost. Now, we see the damage caused by the Obama-Biden policies.  Manufacturing was outsourced to countries like Mexico, India, and China - but more, pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment companies turned to counties that force them into death as a result of taxation. These companies folks were directly responsible for producing PPE, ventilators, and other COVID-19-related materials to help combat the spread of the virus.  Biden, Pelosi, and Schumer want to stand before the American people and blame Trump - no, no, no, ladies and gentlemen, it was Obama and Biden who oversaw the mass exodus of American manufacturing and the loss of jobs in the U.S. It wasn't Trump.  If you don't think the liberal-establishment doesn't have their fangs in ole Joe - think again! On Wednesday of this week, Biden's "unity task forces" with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont released a 110-page policy wish list of recommendations for the former vice president. Biden is a dote of the Democratic Party - he has been and will continue to be. The party needed a moderate to keep from isolating the party - but, the DNC knows that without the far-left and their droves of "would-be young voters," Biden doesn't stand a chance. Ole' Boschevic Bernie killed Biden leading up to S.C. - only for him to be turned on by the DNC because he looked like an anti-conservative on national television.  Biden is not the first choice of the party, and he should be considered the last pick of black voters in America. Nonetheless, Biden is the only option ahead of November for Democrats in 2020 - but he stands no chance in running this country, heck, he has helped run our nation into the ground for the last 50-years. But make no mistake, Biden is hiding out in the basement under the direct orders of top-Democrats - keeping him out-of-site, keeping him bottled-up, and keeping him away from a live-mic when away from prepared speeches and teleprompters.  Biden's political career and 8-years as VP were a joke. His legitimacy as the leader of the free world is even more laughable. But what is not, is the intention, behind-the-scenes attempt to dismantle our nation's democracy at the hands of liberal-Democrats. As conservatives and independents, we must see the writing on the wall. Democrats, with Joe Biden atop of the ballot, wish to return our nation to desperation - and total dependence on government. We cannot; the Democrats must not dupe us again. Music courtesy of Greg Shields Music http://www.reverbnation.com/GregShields

Heart and blood vessel health is knowable, measurable, and manageable -- including stroke.Natural aging leads to artery plaque, high blood pressure, and slower and irregular heartbeats. You can do everything right, and time will still pass. You will still age. Fortunately, understanding of the biology of aging has improved. Heart and blood vessel health is knowable, measurable, and manageable -- including stroke.Facts about stroke: Stroke kills about 140,000 Americans each year—that’s 1 out of every 20 deaths. Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. Every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes. About 185,000 strokes—nearly 1 of 4—are in people who have had a previous stroke. About 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes, in which blood flow to the brain is blocked. Stroke costs the United States an estimated $34 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medicines to treat stroke, and missed days of work. Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability. Stroke reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors age 65 and over. Dr. Joshua S. Yamamoto joins Dr. Roizen to discuss specific ways to prevent stroke. In this Conversations With Healers episode, my guest is Kristin Thomas, Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Holistic Health Coach. Kristin has an amazing story of learning to heal her own chronic conditions including ulcerative colitis, hormone imbalances, leaky gut, food sensitivities and more. Kristin and I talked about: Healing the body naturally with food and supplements, The mind-body connection and looking at the imbalances in the mind and body as opportunities to heal deeply, How our health is a continuous flow and the goal isn't perfection but supporting our system as best we can, The importance of appreciation and gratitude for all that our bodies are doing right, Tapping into the signals your body is giving you, Trusting the healing process (knowing the next few steps instead of all of it) and that healing is possible, Working with multiple healers, Trusting that as a healer who you get as clients are exactly who you are meant to help, and more. My favorite healing nugget from Kristin is "I think so many people today feel so disconnected from their bodies and what's going on. In big part because of a lack of understanding of how our bodies actually work. They almost feel like strangers in their own bodies, their bodies betrayed them or it's doing something wrong and they don't know why. You can kind of feel like you begin to separate your identity from your body. It is a really scary place to be and that's exactly where I was in. The mind-body connection is really coming back home to your body and starting to love your body again, even if it's not perfect. There isn't such a thing like perfect health. You maintain and manage good health, but there are always things you can be working on. It's about appreciating where you are and gratitude for everything your body is doing right. Because it's not always doing everything wrong. There are a lot of things that are going right." You can find out more about Kristin and her work at her website. Physical therapy; many of you have had it after an injury or surgery. Typically, your doctor prescribes it and your insurance dictates who you can see and how many sessions you may have. What you really want, or need isn’t necessarily factored in. Kristin Thomas, Physical Therapist and owner of Core Wellness and Physical Therapy, believes in a different, more holistic approach focused on becoming aware of the interconnectedness of the different parts of the body.Patients come to her for help after being injured or when a minor condition has finally deteriorated into a painful problem that impacts their functionality. During hour-long sessions she conducts a thorough assessment of their injury or condition and looks at how pain is impacting their entire body. The area you are experiencing pain is just the tip of the iceberg. By evaluating your whole body, she figures out what is the “Boss” or main issue that has escalated into your current problems. If there are head to toe issues, she looks at posture. Then she starts treatment with the “Boss” and moves on to other areas as needed. You don’t have to have had surgery, been in an accident or had a recent injury to utilize physical therapy. Starting treatment when you have small issues can keep things from turning into big issues.Myofascial release:The body is connected on a cellular level by fascia. “It is that tough, connective tissue that runs throughout your entire body and surrounds and infuses every part of your body including your bones, arteries, spinal cord, nerves, organs and cells. It has no beginning and no end, so if one part of it tightens, it can cause pain in another part of the body”.Practicing myofascial release on specific areas of the fascia can “open up” or relieve issues in other parts of the body, lessening or eliminating pain and restoring movement.Dry needling:Dry needling is a technique where “specially trained physical therapists insert a thin filament needle into the muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point to break up restrictions that could be causing the pain and limiting your motion”. It is not the same as acupuncture despite the fact that it also involves inserting needles.Process for relief of pain.-Start with physical therapy. Build your strength back up, get flexible and open your fascial system. That may not be the complete answer, but it is a good first step. If they can get things opened up it can help with rehab later.-Evaluate: Are things are getting better? If not try an orthopedic doctor or chiropractor.-Evaluate your posture and habitual movements so surgery, if needed, will help. Surgery alone isn’t enough if you don’t change bad habits.-Watch for small things before they become big things.Journal Questions:Have you had any past injuries worth investigating?Do you have anything that currently bothers you… be it a nuisance or debilitating? What are you feelings about trying physical therapy? What are your barriers to getting an appointment on the calendar?Homework:Find a quiet place where you can tune into your body and become aware of what it is trying to tell you. Relax and breath slowly. Notice which areas are tight or uncomfortable. Breath and put intention into the areas that are bothering you to calm them down. Regularly practice awareness to stay tuned into your body.Goal setting will always be part of your homework. Once a week write down your focus or goals for the week. Every Friday reassess them, tweak them or change them to fit your needs. It’s “Your journey, your way”.Links:Direction Not Perfection, Accountability and Coaching from your Wine-loving Dieticianhttps://braughlerbooks.com/store/books/direction-not-perfectionKristin Thomas:www.corewellnesstherapy.comhttps://www.facebook.com/corewellnesstherapy/
