Why is it that we always wait until things aren't going well to ask ourselves how to be excellent? Nida Leard is going to remind us the best time to figure out how to be excellent is when things are going well. Nida's the founder of Nida Leard Consulting and Coaching, where she advises world-class experts to become legendary market outliers to build a truly innovative businesses that stand out from the rest.  Nida shows them that in order to grow, they have to tell the truth. As a problem solver, Nida says when she's evaluating things or working out a challenge, she's asking what the root cause is. The same is true when coaching her clients. There is no cookie-cutter approach because everyone doesn't have the same resources. She says you have the potential to be amazing. It's usually your natural strengths, your personality type, and other things like your upbringing, and environment that are factors to find what you should be doing and what makes you feel alive. Eventually, it's all about finding the truth, finding your truth. Sorting the things that feel incorrect from the unsexy tasks – the work you do when no one is watching – has to come from a conscious place. Nida says when you're running away from something, your body will react. It's that fight or flight mode that's registering in your brain. It might not be real danger – it might be thinking that if you go on camera, someone will criticize you. Or that you might say something wrong.  But when you can make a conscious decision coming from a place of awareness,  you'll feel calm. You'll be at peace with yourself. And even in making a decision to walk away from something, it will come from a place of empowerment because you're not scared and you're not running away. When we make decisions that are actually aligned with who we really are -- maybe where the business journey is at the moment, where we are as human beings at the moment -- that it is a very calming experience. Chaos comes from feeling misaligned. I can't explain ... I can't put my finger on it ... Nida says her clients usually don't know how to explain their reaction. She refers to the five levels of transformation being misaligned: self-identity, values and beliefs, skills and capabilities, behaviors, and ecosystem. If one of those levels is misaligned, something isn't going to feel right. You could have great behaviors and mindset, but if you're surrounding yourself with the wrong crowd, you won't feel like you're in the right place. It's like a flower being planted in a low-quality environment. Delivering quality is understanding your clients and the group of people you want to pursue. When you niche down into something specific, think about the small details the client is looking for that are different from the mainstream market. You need to really understand who is your ideal client psychologically. On a deep level, what are their desires, what are their problems, and what are their challenges? And how do we make their lives easier in a way that nobody else can? People will have criteria that they're not even conscious about when they hire people, says Nida. If you could make a change when you're doing well, you'll have the money. You'll have the resources, your energy, and all that to fix the problem. What I like to talk about is: how do you make your service exceptional? How do you customize your services? How do you not use the cookie-cutter approach? Ben Leard grew up, as he called it, in the shadow of the University of Georgia campus. How did he end up at Auburn? A recruiting visit from Rodney Garner started the process. Leard came to the Plains with Terry Bowden as the head coach. His career finished with Tommy Tuberville at the helm. He took over for Dameyune Craig and struggled. By the time his senior year rolled around, Leard was playing his best football and was part of an SEC Western Division Champion.   Like so many Auburn Student Athletes, Leard and his family have made their home in Auburn. His defensive coordinator in high school told him that should be a factor in his recruitment.  Ben Leard is featured in this Talking Tigers Podcast, presented by Wickles Pickles

March 3, 2019 at the Boston Athenæum. Topographers, illustrators, and painter-printmakers explored and created images of the Grand Canyon, and the evolution of these genres parallels the history of American printmaking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Beginning with geological studies and including prints for tourists and collectors, printmakers have approached the Canyon from the vantage point of line, tone, and pattern. In so doing, they made significant contributions to imaging one of the United States’ most renowned geological monuments, yet their works have not been extensively studied like those of painters and photographers. Sublime Impressions: Prints and Printmakers of the Grand Canyon traces the history of printmaking in the Grand Canyon from the topographical images of the first explorers to the abstracted works of twentieth-century modernists to show how a medium changed the way the Grand Canyon was represented and, thus, the public’s perception of it.

If you saw a need or an opportunity outside of your industry would you recognize it? Our guest did and he’s here to tell us about it. Alan Leard is one of the co-founders of Limelight Health, a quoting, underwriting, proposal platform that started as an idea for an app.  You'll hear the origin story of Limelight Health today as well as how it has evolved, plus Alan's thoughts on having four co-founders and making the transition into the CTO role. Join us for those insights and more on today's CTO Studio! In this episode, you’ll hear: Why four co-founders is the best number to have. What are the three questions I ask every CEO before I join a startup? When did he know it was time to make the transition into CTO at Limelight Health? What are the ways they mitigate risk? Why are the technical challenges of Limelight Health so attractive? And so much more! When I asked Alan to tell me what Limelight Health does he explained Limelight involves everything that needs to happen from the moment an employer says they are going to get insurance for their employees through the point when the employees are actually choosing the health insurance right for them. The process is about providing accurate information on what plans are available and quote them accurately, as well as apply contribution modeling as far as how much the employer is going to pay and how much the employee is going to pay. All of that gets wrapped up into a proposal that helps the employer make a decision. But how Limelight got its start goes back to one of Alan's first businesses: a make-your-own wine bar. Before he and his wife had kids they wanted to do something together, they wanted to run a business together. When they came across the idea of a make-your-own-wine wine bar it seemed perfect and they set about making it happen. They ran their bar together through all the ups and downs that entailed. That bar also led Alan to meet one of his future fellow co-founders of Limelight Health. It started after the wine bar had been up and running for about four years. Alan realized he was putting in 12 hours at the wine bar then coming home and making mobile apps as a hobby on the side. Along the way he also met Garrett when Alan hired him as a musician to play at one of the bar's Wine and Roses events. Alan had also gotten hired with Accelerator in a support role - he mainly offered support for other developers using that platform. When Garrett began talking to Alan about an app idea he had Alan's ears perked up. But Alan was no stranger to app ideas, he had so many people approach him with ideas that Alan had a series of questions he asked everyone who talked to him! The first was does that app already exist? Have you checked the app store? If they had and the app wasn't already made (which was the case with Garrett’s idea) then he had a follow-up question. That question was do you know what user stories are? Garrett didn't so Alan explained to him what they are. A week later Garrett came back with full-on wireframes and had written out user stories. So they built that app together, it was an app meant to help people find local artists online. After that Garrett saw the potential in his everyday line of work: insurance brokerage. This was about the time the Affordable Care Act was coming into existence and Garrett wanted to be able to help his families find the right options for them. So they turned it into a lead gen app: you would plug in your household size, your income and location. The app would then tell you what your insurance was going to cost. There was also an in-app purchase which would allow brokers to have their customers quickly get an idea of what they were going to pay and then the brokers would help the customers sign up for a plan straightaway. And that is how they found their other two co-founders Jason and Michael. Garrett showed them and a few months later they both came on board. That meant they have four co-founders and I was curious about what that first meeting was like. Alan's recollection of that meeting is fuzzy he says because he was the third-party; he had a lot going on outside of the app as he was running the winery and still working at Accelerator and a few other side projects. It took awhile before he became a co-founder and he explains why on this episode of CTO Studio.  We wrap up with a talk about the current state of healthcare, and what he is loving the most about being CTO of Limelight Health. This is a fascinating and frank chat about the reality of SaaS startups, working within the insurance industry and healthcare itself. Join us and hear for yourself on this edition of CTO Studio!

Listen to this sermon...Seeking God’s Pleasure – A Study of Philippians “Shine don't whine" Philippians 2:14-18 Life worthy of the gospel will stand out so clearly from the surrounding culture that it will shine like a star against the blackness of the night sky. Christians lives ought to be described as “blameless and innocent”, “without blemish” as children of God in the middle of a crooked and perverse world. We are called to live differently than the world around us. There is a command given today's scripture text to address one of the biggest ways we can be different and shine before others with the love of God. We are commanded to do "all things" without "grumbling" or "arguments". This will occur as we hold fast to and hold forth the “word of life. ” Paul’s own joy over the church in part depends on his eternal perspective – that they are growing in maturity and hence increasingly demonstrating this kind of life.
