Close to 20,000 brands use Shogun to build beautiful and totally customized pages for the ecommerce sites. Brands like K-Swiss, Timbuk2, MVMT Watches, Chubbies Shorts, Leesa Mattress, and so many more.  A lot of those same brands also leverage the speed and flexibility of a headless front-end. Recently Shogun launched Shogun Frontend, which is a Progressive Web App (PWA) tool that allows stores to build a LIGHTNING FAST headless front end that loads in sub-second speeds.  In this episode we dive into exactly what a PWA is, why stores should consider it, and how it works within a headless architecture.  If you're a scaling ecommerce brand, this is an episode you won't want to miss!    Some of the topics we discuss are: How a Progressive Web App works as an ultra fast headless front end. Why do so many stores see 70% of traffic on mobile, but 70% of sales on desktop, and how might this be a massive opportunity for you.  What is the difference between Shogun Page Builder and Shogun Front-End What does Finbarr think of Headless commerce? It's pros, cons, and who should consider it. How can a PWA front-end help a brand. What brands should consider a headless PWA front end. Which should not. About Finbarr:  Finbarr is the CEO & Co-Founder of Shogun and former software engineer at Y Combinator. He's a Scottish guy living in California and one of the first results on Google for Finbarr! Previously he's built two businesses, Shogun (a CMS and Headless PWA with thousands of paying customers) and a web development business he started when he was 18. He loves finding creative coding solutions, and has written code to process millions of dollars worth of orders at companies like Pebble, Groupon and Exec. I keep tellin ya: it IS possible! I feel like a broken record sometimes but really, we all have it in us to do the “impossible”. Each and every one us has that potential in us. We just need to figure out how to become the best in the world. Simple, right? Well… my guest on podcast #55 is here to share how SHE did it. Caroline Boller started like so many of us. She got into running as a casual recreational activity. An escape… a release from the stresses, pressures, and demands of “real life”. She was able to embrace the outdoors, soak up nature, and just be. Then one day… she saw something that changed things. “…I wonder if I can do that, too….” It started just like that – a curiosity. Caroline Boller, Average Jane American, witnessed the finish line of a 50 mile ultramarathon. And what she saw surprised her. She saw that it looked like any other race finish line. As she saw runners finishing, some totally wiped out and some totally fine... the thought struck her. This looks just like any half-marathon finish line… but it’s 50 miles! Hey… maybe I can do it, too… What happened next was… well… extraordinary. And it's what we get into this episode. For the full blog post / show notes click here!   What's in this episode: Caroline Boller chats with us about going from Average Jane to world record ultra runner... and HOW any one of us could do it. Sometimes... an event is... more... Every so often in the course of human existence... something truly beautiful happens. It's not always obvious and you don't always know it's happening. Sometimes, people can pass right through it and be none the wiser. But those who catch a glimpse... and realize what's going on... know they're witnessing, or perhaps understand that they're a part of... something truly special. That, FitFriends, is what has been happening in the small Northern Maine town of Millinocket... "Be kind, do good" When we're little we're taught a lot of very simple rules to live by. Brush your teeth before bed. Don't push, hit, or hurt people. Say please and thank you. So many things, all just like that, which essentially boil down to "be kind, do good". It's simple, core values like this that seem to have taken root in what has fast become a truly impressive, rather transformative weekend each December in sleepy little Millinocket, Maine. It's just SHOES... why is this so complicated? You would think buying a pair of running shoes is as easy as finding your size, making sure you like how they look, and paying for them... right? Well, sadly, that has not been my experience. On Episode 67 of the podcast, though... I chat with a man who wants to make it nice and easy to find the shoe that's best for you... and make it easy to buy it, too!  For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here. Jens Jakob Andersen is a man on a mission. Jens created RunRepeat.com with a simple mission - make it easy to find your next running shoe. To do this, he's created a pretty solid one-stop-shop for running shoes. On his site you can find boatloads of reviews on shoes, you can find each shoe boiled down to pros and cons given by numerous expert and "normal people" reviews, and you can even buy the shoe via their "deal links". I have to admit... I was pretty impressed not just by the sheer volume of information on RunRepeat... but also by how non-threatening and easy-to-consume it all was. The man has really done it, FitFriends. If you're looking for your next running shoe... you really should check it out. He provides all the info you could need, broken down in helpful, easy-to-understand ways and sorted to show you what is, arguably, the best shoes out there. That said, though... there's one important question left to answer that I HOPE you're asking: How do I know the shoe that's best... for ME? This is the question I posed to him... and while Jens and I may differ on some points... we can both definitely agree on one. Give a listen to our chat to hear the full discussion, and check below to see what, exactly, is in this episode! What's in this episode: Being sick is no fun Millinocket is finally here! So, you wanna run a marathon, huh? There's a lot of questions to answer when you're getting ready to take on your first marathon or half-marathon. Well, friends - no need to reinvent the wheel here - let's answer some of those questions and get you ready for your next big achievement! There's probably a lot of pros and cons you're weighing in your efforts to make the decision. I'm hoping that the questions and answers in this episode will help. They're going to learn a lot about themselves and what they're really capable of both throughout the process and when it's all said and done. The "holiday season" can be tough. On any normal day... life is hard enough as it is. Factor in everything that comes with the holidays... and it can be enough to derail anyone. It can be tough to juggle family, food, and travel. The easy option is to give up and stop trying to make nutrition and fitness work. I submit to you: there is a better way. This is my now-yearly pitch... I call it "The Holiday Survival Guide". For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here. I get it. Really, I do. Like I said - life is busy as it is. The holidays crank that up to 11. So much shopping, organizing, cooking, cleaning, and coordinating to do it can make your head spin. Work usually gets more difficult, which interferes with home and personal life. Then there's the holidays themselves and all the travel involved... plus the food is a nightmare. How am I supposed to stick to "the plan" with 82 holiday meals? Nobody said it was going to be easy. Do-able doesn't mean simple or easy. It's going to be hard work, just like fitness and nutrition, in general, are hard work. But at the end of the day... It's worth it. How great will it feel to make it to January 1st and to know... "I did it. I made it through and didn't screw it all up". There's a certain sense of victory at stake here, not to mention that whole "your health" thing. I've got some thoughts on how you can do this thing. So, give a listen to Episode 64 and find out what's in The Holiday Survival Guide. What's in this episode: How life has been for me lately What’s coming down the pipeline And how to avoid the cascading failures that tend to come with the holiday season Including keeping your physical fitness and nutrition in line Connect with So THIS Is Fitness Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..." We must keep moving forward. There are so many contexts in which that statement is relevant. I've been saying it a lot lately in the gym, too - If you're not moving forward, you're going backward. This past weekend I learned, definitively, that despite what I thought... I was not moving forward. Despite running, jogging, walking and physically moving forward for 60 miles over the course of 18 hours... I was not moving forward. And in that... I learned something. It took me a few days to get it... but it did hit me. I learned the true gift the Ultramarathon gives to the worthy. For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here. #60 - How To Smash Limits And Become The Impossible

So THIS Is Fitness | Health, Fitness, Running & Weight Loss

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2017 74:15

The "impossible" is done all the time. People say a thing is "impossible" for many reasons. Often it's because they simply don't fully understand it, can't fathom it, and thus dismiss it. Little do they know... the "impossible" is accomplished all the time. This weekend, I and many like me will go out to do exactly that - the "impossible". To finish a marathon is an incredible thing. For most people out there, a marathon represents a feat of incredible athletic ability. Many people set it as a goal event for themselves, and typically, their friends call them crazy for doing it. Running a marathon is, truly, something remarkable. To train properly for a marathon requires you to work out according to a very serious schedule. You must eat properly to fuel yourself through the runs and workouts. You need to procure the appropriate gear for the task. It takes early mornings, late nights, dedication, and an understanding circle of friends and family. Crossing the finish line of a marathon is a monumental thing. And yet... for some people... this is not enough. There exists a feat BEYOND the marathon. Unbeknownst to most people, there are organized endurance running events longer than a marathon. Those events are called Ultramarathons... and they are not for the faint of heart. Whatever a marathon requires of you, an ultramarathon demands it ten-fold. This is not to say those who complete a marathon are not "good enough" in some way... I simply mean to say that as hard as they worked to rise above the "common runner"... there is a whole level of achievement still waiting for those people. And once again, I'll be taking on this task. This weekend I, and many people like me, will take on the Ghost Train Rail Trail Race. Ghost Train is an ultramarathon which gives you 30 hours to complete as many 15 mile loops of the course as you can. Many come to this event hoping to claim a 100 mile finish, and the prize of a rail spike to commemorate their stunning victory. That's what I took home last year, and it's what I intend to bring home this year as well. But what does it take to run an ultra? Many people find out these incredible, impossible feats exist... and wonder "how?". How exactly does one break the limits of the "common man" and rise up to conquer such a feat? That is exactly what we discuss in Episode 60 of the podcast. What's in this episode: We talk about the busy week I’ve been having Ultramarathons, what they are, and why you’d do one The Ghost Train Rail Trail Race in particular And we get into things YOU need to know to be better prepared including Things to pack Clothing, gear, and fueling considerations A bit about pacers and crew Strategy, risk management And some final thoughts about what this is gonna be like including an answer to the question: Are you ready?  Connect with So THIS Is Fitness Facebook Instagram The Fitwife's Instagram! Society is ruining everything. Sorry to start off with a downer, but seriously... things are going to hell in a handbasket lately. It seems like nothing is sacred anymore, and the places we used to go to escape the noise are the latest victims being poisoned by the issues of today. Sport is a place that should be good, clean fun... but what I saw the other day tells me we're teetering on a very dangerous ledge. Bad attitudes are viral. All it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch - that's the old saying, right? Some days it seems truer than others. This past weekend FitWife Megan and I worked a half marathon and saw someone have a fit about something. Seeing that, and thinking about the deeper meaning and motivation behind it... made me think about things. Made me think about sport, and the innocence and purity it SHOULD have. About how it needs to remain the sacred place it is. So on this FIRST installment of The FitBite... we dive in and tackle it head on. What's in this episode: We finally solve a problem! The irony is killing me. These show notes have been in draft form for a couple days now. The episode itself was recorded the day after I wanted to publish it. And here we are. Still just now getting ready to publish. I think it's safe to say... we all land in this boat sometimes, yeah? Nice to be my own best example. I had a whole set of notes typed up and ready to go for this episode. I hunkered down, did my best to focus, and cranked it out. I had a whole, somewhat inspiring thing written about delaying and doing things "tomorrow. I talked about intent, and how we end up in this position. I even called myself out and said "damn it all, we're gonna get this right!". And instead, here we are. It's Sunday afternoon. This podcast episode... #59... was supposed to be published 3 days ago. This past THURSDAY. And yet, here I sit. At 4:30 on Sunday afternoon... retyping the show notes and getting ready to publish it. Again, to be fair, I had MEANT to publish yesterday. I hit "publish" and everything. But my wifi was disconnected and all the copy disappeared. You ever write a paper in school and accidentally close the window without saving? Paragraphs upon paragraphs... maybe even whole PAGES of your document... gone. Yeah... not the sort of thing that gets you amped up. I tried to re-write what I had... but at that point... it's so frustrating you just can't. So I said I'd come back to it later. Welcome to the point of the discussion, FitFriends. Later... Tomorrow... they seem like a really fantastic time, right? Right now I'm so frustrated... or upset... or overwhelmed... or overworked... or WHATEVER. But tomorrow... well, tomorrow I won't feel that way anymore. TOMORROW I can get this thing done!  There's a few problems with that theory, though. Unfortunately, Tomorrow isn't as shiny and infallible as we make it out to be. As a matter of fact, there's quite a few large problems with Tomorrow... not the least of which is the fact that it often doesn't actually come. And this, my friends... is the discussion at hand. #58 - 4 Things To Know About Being A Personal Trainer

So THIS Is Fitness | Health, Fitness, Running & Weight Loss

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2017 52:16

It takes a lot to be a Personal Trainer I'm not just talking about knowing the body or counting reps. I'm not just talking about a great before and after photo to show off to potential clients. If you're thinking about becoming a Personal Trainer, thinking about working with one, or you're ALREADY working with one... you should consider these things I have to share... I feel like I need a dual degree for this... Living my life the way I do now, I often feel like I should've majored in exercise science in college. Of course, that opens up the whole "coulda, woulda, shoulda" conversation, and frankly... If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably do it all the same. In the end, living college the way I did landed me in a position to have that breakdown where I made a change. If that hadn't happened... Well, I wouldn't have found fitness, running, or this career I love. But man, nobody's prepared enough for this. When I said I feel like I need a dual degree for this... the other one would be psychology... or something like it. Idunno... what kind of degree does a therapist get? That's not meant to be an insult in the slightest. I'm dead serious - There's a whole side to this job that a lot of people don't consider - the emotional. If you're gonna be worth your salt as a personal trainer, you HAVE to get to know people. Not just the surface-level, 2 kids and a dog stuff. I'm talking DEEP. I'm talking what makes these people tick, what stops them up, and what's gonna make or break them. The deeper motivations that drive them to success or failure. That information doesn't come cheap. When you get someone's deepest, darkest secrets, you get a whole lot of emotional baggage dumped on you. Sure, you can unpack it for them and lighten the load... But it takes a toll on you. There's a certain emotional currency you have to spend each and every day to do this job. It's almost like in The Green Mile (I only saw the movie) where Michael Clarke Duncan's character takes someone's illness upon himself and expels it out into the ether. It knocks him out for a while... takes a toll on him. Don't mistake my meaning here. This is most certainly a worthwhile venture. What I mean to say by all this... is the job isn't for everyone. I MEAN that if you're considering being a trainer... the emotional side of the job should be a big consideration. Again - this is MOST certainly a worthwhile venture. When you're able to get to the deeper levels of what makes a person who they are... you can find out where they REALLY want to be... and why. Then, you can begin to help them get there. There are other considerations, of course. Time, schedule, and your availability are all major considerations. These all help answer the bigger, and frankly very important question of "can I make a reliable living doing this?". The short answer? "It depends." Not an entirely satisfying answer, I know.   What's in this episode: Darrell's feeling a bit under the weather We share some quick thoughts about seasonal change We talk about 4 things YOU need to consider about being a Personal Trainer Connect with So THIS Is Fitness Facebook Instagram The Fitwife's Instagram! We're luckier than we realize. Most of us go through life taking for granted what we've got. I'm not saying we're spoiled... I'm saying we don't know any better. Just like a small child doesn't understand the value of a dollar... maybe we don't realize the value of the gifts we've been given... I've been thinking a lot lately... There's a quote that's been on my mind from Steve Prefontaine - a prolific track and field athlete from the 70's. "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." I'm sure he was speaking in terms of professional or collegiate athletes giving their best performance in a competition setting. I think, however, what he said can apply just as easily to the rest of us. Yes, this is applicable to us "normies" in our daily life. More specifically, I think it's applicable to us in our fitness endeavors. We aren't giving it our best. More often than not, anyway, I find this to be true. I know if I look myself in the mirror and ask if I'm giving my best... it's a hard "no". But what does "giving your best" even mean? And what "gifts" are we wasting? You know what I'm talking about... There's something you're SECRETLY hoping to achieve. It's that goal that floats in the back of your head. The one that's just beyond what you say out loud. Sometimes treasure is hiding in plain sight. I don't know everything... nor will I ever claim to. When I find some new information that I feel has benefit not only to me, but to others... I want to share it! In the not-too-distant past I discovered "essential oils". I had seen them in passing but didn't know what they were... and didn't feel the need to investigate. As far as I knew they were just a small army of weird little bottles behind the counter at the natural food/supplement stores. When I went to NOW Foods headquarters in Illinois for a blogger event, though... one of our info workshops was all about essential oils. Boy oh boy... what a game-changer! I was impressed, intrigued, and I had to know more. From there, I totally fell down the rabbit hole, and I feel like everyone should know the benefits of this stuff.  THAT is why I chatted for an hour with Tina, Neil, and Alana from NOW Health Group (NOW Foods) all about "essential oils". This episode serves as a primer on all things "essential oil" - think of it as Essential Oils 101 - What YOU need to know about them. This is also the kick-off to what may end up being a WHOLE YEAR'S WORTH of articles, posts, and recipes. So BUCKLE UP - this is gonna be a good one :D So... how bout the basics? There is a TON of information in this episode, but let's break down some of the most basic basics to give you an idea. -Essential Oils are a liquid. These are oils/liquids that are distilled from a plant of some kind - like lavender, orange, clove, and many others. It's said that they were originally called essential oils because they were believed to hold the very essence of the aroma and the plant itself. There are two main methods used - steam distillation or cold pressing. In the end, sure, what's extracted is likely the very stuff of the plant that makes it smell like what it is. When it's all said and done they come in a little tiny glass bottle, typically amber colored. -Essential Oils are a "volatile aromatic compound". The really simple way to explain this is: "Volatile" means this liquid/oil very easily goes from liquid to gas at a relatively low temperature, like room temperature. Don't forget - when you smell something, it's because itty bitty particles of the thing itself have hit your smell receptors! So when you take the cap off and smell what's in the bottle, that's the liquid turning to gas and going in your nose! It happens that easily, and that's part of what makes essential oils ideal for aromatherapy. -There are a few different ways to use essential oils. The two main ways to use essential oils are topically and via aromatherapy. Topical uses include massage oil, in a bath, a spray mist, a roll-on stick, and many others. Aromatherapy use could be through a room spray or, more commonly, a diffuser. There IS a third way - internally. This method, however, is VERY controversial and can be dangerous. -Essential oils should be treated with caution. Essential oils are typically sold at 100% purity. They are very potent and should ALWAYS be mixed or diluted to prevent irritation, burning, and other adverse reactions. Typically, a 1% to 3% ratio is what is recommended for normal use. There are some essential oils that, in their pure undiluted form, should NEVER come into contact with skin. There are even MORE essential oils that should NEVER be ingested or otherwise taken internally. A good rule of thumb - if it's not the essential oil of a plant or fruit you'd actually eat in real life, you shouldn't consume the oil. The EVEN SAFER option? Simply do not ingest essential oils unless you've got doctor's orders. -There are plenty of benefits, both proven and unproven. Odds are your doctor will never tell you to ingest essential oils. As a matter of fact, they probably won't tell you to use them at all. At present, there's not a whole lot out there in the scientific community that suggests essential oils should be used medicinally. You'll hear many stories, websites, and people telling you that it's great for cuts and bruises, that it's great to calm an upset stomach, etc... but at present the science simply isn't supporting that. There ARE, however, plenty of acknowledged benefits for mood and mental health. I mean, YOU just try and smell some fresh lemon oil without smiling :) There's SO much more to essential oils than just what's right here. Give a listen and see what you think! Then, stay tuned to this site for a ton of articles and recipes about essential oils that are soon to come! I talk a big game sometimes... Going into Anchor Down 24 Hour Ultramarathon... I made a bold statement. I said, just like I did before Ghost Train Rail Trail Race last year, that I was coming for a belt buckle. The only acceptable outcome of the race was a 100 mile finish. I did not finish 100 miles at Anchor Down... and I had to figure something out - how to define success and failure. In recapping the event... I'm pretty sure, at least in this instance, I've managed to map out the gray area and do just that. Anchor Down Ultra is an incredible event. This was my second showing at Anchor Down, and it did not disappoint. With a beautiful course, top notch support, and a supportive atmosphere, it's tough to go wrong with this race. I could go on for days about this race, but the bottom line is... it's simply superb. The course is 2.45 miles through Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island - .95 miles of it is trail while the remaining 1.5 is paved walkways in the park. There's minimal elevation gain and a large chunk of the course overlooks Narragansett Bay - yes, right up along the water. It's a beautiful course that, despite its relatively short length, you will not get tired of looking at. The aid stations are fully stocked and the volunteers & crew are amazingly helpful - even the vendors show up ready to go! Anchor Down provides all of this in 6, 12, and 24 hour flavors, giving runners an excellent opportunity to flex their muscles and see what they're made of. There's more to a race than you think. There's so much that goes into a race, yes, of course, from the participant's side... but from the Race Director, too. I was fortunate enough to have a chat with a buddy of mine, Jay, who is both a runner AND a race director (I find the best ones are) about exactly what's involved. Jay joined us in the studio to chat about runners, both "normal distance" and ultra distance... the differences between the two, and what makes us tick. He also talks about what it takes to be a race director for both crowds (and in general). We talk about Anchor Down 24 hour too... but there's so much more than that... The connections you make with people... the stories you share... the emotion you feel when people succeed and the crushing blow you feel when they fail. You get invested in the journey and the ending to the story. And that's exactly what happens on this episode... and in our chat... and undoubtedly... it's what will happen this weekend at Anchor Down 24 Hour Ultramarathon. What's in this episode: Reflecting as I stare destiny in the face again Jay Paganelli joins us in the studio to talk: The difference between "normal" runners and Ultra runners What it's like to be a Race Director Why we run and what it takes to make a race happen What to expect in a 24 hour ultramarathon, and more specifically - Anchor Down The 10 Commandments of Endurance Connect with Jay Paganelli and his races www.RunTrueNorth.com www.GansettSummer.com www.AnchorDownUltra.com St. Jude's Walk To End Childhood Cancer - Greater Boston Connect with So THIS Is Fitness Facebook Instagram The Fitwife's Instagram! So THIS Is Fitness | Health, Fitness, Running & Weight Loss

Do you REALLY know yourself? Every once in a while... it's important to stop and "check yourself". Are you happy? With work, home life, your relationships? Are you where you thought you were going to be? Have you achieved what you thought you were going to achieve? How did you even get here? Good or bad - you should know. And if you're not happy... perhaps you need to ask the important questions. Who am I? Why am I here? What do I REALLY want? Are you willing to look deep, and get really honest? The first rule to achieving your highest potential, in any field, is to know yourself. Really, pick up any self-help book or even well-respected and famous texts like Sun Tsu's "The Art Of War" - they all agree on this point. Most of us probably think we really do know ourselves... but there's a problem. Most of us go through life more or less going through the motions. We don't typically question our situation, our "lot in life", so to speak. We tend to accept what we're given and be pleased with where we get. We don't stop to think if we really get it, and if we've dug deep enough. What's in this episode: Holy Crap - 50 episodes! What’s new and in development for me, the fitwife, and So THIS Is Fitness And we answer the questions of Who are you… why are you here, and what do you REALLY want? We all have monsters to fight. Some things are tougher to deal with than others. We all have our own struggles and battles, and some might seem impossible to win. Even if you've won a battle or two... maybe you can't seem to win the war. What's worse - some of these things we fight... other people can't understand it. To them, it might as well be... some imaginary monster we're fighting. Despite that, you can't give up. There are people that get it... and that are rooting for you. Like us. We've got our own monsters, too. Yes, me and FitWife Megan have monsters we fight... frankly I think hers are a little harder to beat than mine. That's why we're talking about them. Now. On episode 49 of the podcast. We have a conversation that, honestly, was a bit difficult for Megan... but it's important to talk about. Airing some of these things out, saying it out loud, and acknowledging it, whether in private with yourself or in a more public forum like we are can be an important and helpful "swing of the sword" in the fight against your monster.   So, my question to you: What's YOUR monster? Comment and share, or email us at podcast@sothisisfitness.com. If you want to get a hold of FitWife Megan... just use the subject line "To The FitWife". You're not alone. And you can win this fight. What's in this episode: The FitWife Returns! Again! From the news desk: Cheap gyms that don’t care are TAKING OVER! And “not enough sleep could be making you fat!” The FitWife and I catch up about our recent exploits And we have a REAL, tough conversation about fighting your own personal monsters and taking back control of your life Connect with So THIS Is Fitness Facebook Instagram The Fitwife's Instagram! You are not alone. It can be easy to think you're all alone, on a little island, whether you're struggling with nutrition, fitness, or specifically running. I'm here to tell you... you're not alone. There is a larger community you are a part of whether you realize it or not, and there are many smaller communities still that you can become a part of intentionally. Ted Spiker joins me on Episode 48 of the podcast to talk about exactly that. You DO belong, and you're doing great! Ted, through his interest in and passion for fitness and running, has created what has become quite the community. He's created a vehicle for people to identify with someone, or many someones, who are dealing with and fighting through the same struggles they are themselves. Maybe, with a little bit of a hand reaching out, we can all make it a little more do-able to achieve our goals and reach that next success... whether it's a sub-30 5k... or something else.
