Can generosity lead to joy in a wounded world? Ian Challis believes so, and helps us explore both our generous impulses and the actions they give rise to if we allow it. Generosity is the first of the 10 Paramis or beautiful qualities that lead to Buddhahood:GenerosityVirtueRenunciationWisdomEnergyPatienceTruthfulnessResolveLoving KindnessEquanimityThere are two words in the Pali language associated with generosity:Chaga - the intention or impulse to be generous;Dana - the outward expression of generosity. Both intention and action are equally important. In many Eastern cultures, the practice of giving is a core value, an essential way of being taught from a young age, and familiar to all. Perhaps this is why the Buddha would teach this virtue first when entering a new village. Ian shares many insights on generosity, including:How to recognize and foster our generous impulses; Letting go of transactional thinking when giving;Giving in-person;Our intention is what determines the value;Giving is about connection, not sacrifice;Seeing and celebrating our generosity; Bringing presence and mindfulness to the whole process of giving. He concludes by reminding us of the four gifts we can give:Material SupportProtectionThe teaching of the DharmaNon-fear, through our commitment to harmlessness______________ Ian Challis is a student and teacher in the Insight Tradition of Buddhism. How do we make space for natural human emotions, including those we avoid such as shame? Can we not be afraid of them, and hold our experience with more acceptance and compassion? Shame has a very visceral component that hijacks our emotions, much like encountering a dangerous animal. In this rich talk, Ian explores the various aspects of shame that cross our minds and how we can examine these despite the pain they invoke. We are conditioned to feel shame based on societal norms, even if we don't share them, which is why it is particularly prevalent among non-conforming individuals such as LGBTQ persons. He discusses how we can avoid internalizing these feelings and not feel isolated as a result. He makes the distinction between remorse or ethical responsibility, which connect us to the world, and shame which isolates us. Shame withdraws us into our own emotional pain, whereas remorse centers on the pain we have caused others and opens us to reconciliation. ______________ Ian Challis is a student and teacher in the Insight Tradition of Buddhism. All week, we've been running “best of” episodes as part of our Taming Anxiety series – and this is the final episode in that series. Leslie Booker (who goes by Booker) is one of America's leading dharma teachers. She's worked with incarcerated and vulnerable youth, she's done mindfulness and cognitive-based therapy work on Rikers Island, and she's written about best practices for teaching yoga in criminal justice settings. She's a graduate of three different training programs at Spirit Rock, including their four-year Retreat Teacher Training Program. In this conversation, Booker makes the case that one of the most important, even life-saving, tools when it comes to dealing with anxiety is our ability to connect with other people. And - like the three characteristics, Booker argues that the experience of anxiety is inherently impermanent, unsatisfactory, and unreliable (or, in Pali, it has the characteristics of anicca, dukkha and anatta). Understanding this fundamental truth, she says, can help us see our anxiety with more clarity, and therefore relate to it more skillfully. Booker also explains why bringing awareness to our bodies can help settle us in our most anxious moments. Just a note: this interview was first recorded in May of 2021, so you may hear a few slightly dated references, but the topic of anxiety, for better or worse, is perennially relevant. Join Booker next week as we re-launch the Taming Anxiety Challenge, over on the Ten Percent Happier app. To join the Challenge, just download the Ten Percent Happier app today wherever you get your apps or by visiting tenpercent.com. Taming Anxiety Series - Episode 4: Welcome to the final episode in our Taming Anxiety Series! Today's guest, Leslie Booker – who goes by "Booker" – is one of America's leading dharma teachers. She began sharing the practice with vulnerable populations back in 2005 and is a graduate of three different training programs at Spirit Rock, including their four-year Retreat Teacher Training Program. In this conversation, Booker will make the case that one of the most important, even life-saving, tools when it comes to dealing with anxiety is our ability to connect with our communities. She also brings our attention to yet another Buddhist list – the “three characteristics.” And she explains how bringing awareness to our bodies can help settle us in our most anxious moments. This, I should say, is something she's worked on with me personally. If you'd like to see that, you can actually do so, because we filmed it as part of our new Taming Anxiety Challenge, a ten-day meditation challenge which begins today over in the Ten Percent Happier app. Booker is one of the core teachers in the Taming Anxiety Challenge, which features short videos and guided meditations about how to live with anxiety more intentionally. In the app, you'll see her share strategies with me – and you – for putting into practice everything we talk about on the podcast today — including ways to normalize the experience of anxiety in your community. In fact, by joining the Taming Anxiety Challenge, you'll be part of a community of thousands of meditators learning to cope with anxiety. You can even invite your friends or family to join you in the Challenge – for free! You'll get a notification each time they meditate, so you can be accountable to and supportive of each other. You can join the Taming Anxiety Challenge by downloading the Ten Percent Happier app: https://10percenthappier.app.link/install. “Caring for myself is not self indulgence. It is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare” -- Audre Lorde These words open Leslie Booker‘s website. Known as “Booker”, she brings her heart, wisdom and compassion to the intersection of social justice, yoga and mindfulness. She is passionate about expanding our vision around culturally responsive yoga and mindfulness teaching, and about changing the paradigm of self and community care. An activist who spent more than a decade on the front lines of the criminal justice system, Booker is a mindfulness/movement teacher, trainer, mentor, writer, and changemaker consultant. She inspires others on their journey to find a sense of freedom and liberation within a world that is burdened by greed, hatred and delusion. Booker teaches yoga and mindfulness. She began sharing her practice with teens incarcerated or involved in the court system and other vulnerable populations in 2005, after nearly a decade in the fashion industry. She served as a senior teacher and Director of Teacher Trainings with Lineage Project from 2006-2016, where she worked with incarcerated and vulnerable youth. During this time, she also facilitated a mindfulness and cognitive-based therapy intervention on Riker’s Island from 2009-2011, a partnership between New York University and the National Institute of Health. “I was really overwhelmed at the beginning, by the environment, by seeing so many of my little brothers and sisters locked up,” Booker admitted about first teaching 12-15 year old incarcerated youth. “It’s heartbreaking to see another generation of People of Color starting their lives behind bars and feeling stuck there, like it’s where they’re supposed to be. But I knew that it was something I needed to do. As Van Jones says, ‘We need to call them up, not call them out.’ I needed to go back and try again.” Booker found that to teach in that environment, she had to go deeper into her meditation practice. “You’re seeing a lot of suffering through generations of historical trauma and the challenge is to not get caught up in that narrative, in the weight of it, but to face it head on, to empower them to move through it, not around it.” Soon after she began her practice, Booker went on a retreat to Uganda with the Venerable Bhante Buddharakkhita, a Ugandan Theravada Buddhist monk, and as she was leaving he said, “Your practice has to be your work, and your work has to be your practice, and there can be no separation.” At first Booker says she didn’t know how to integrate those, because she was an activist on the front lines, working in jails. Now, in her teaching, Booker draws on another expression of Audre Lorde, that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” Realizing that “these tools that we’ve been shown of fear and hatred and greed and delusion are not working," Booker says "I know I have to turn towards compassion, towards love. I have to turn towards hearing your story and seeing how we are more alike than separate. Because me living divisively from you isn’t healing this world that we’re living in.” Throughout her career, Booker has contributed to the advancement of her field both in theory and practice. She is a a co-author of Best Practices for Yoga in a Criminal Justice Setting, a contributor to Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality’s report: Gender & Trauma—Somatic Interventions for Girls in Juvenile Justice, YOGA: The Secret of Life, and contributed to Sharon Salzberg’s book Happiness at Work. Booker is on faculty with the Engaged Mindfulness Institute, Off the Mat Into the World, Bending Towards Justice, the Yoga and Dharma Training at Spirit Rock, and sits on the Advisory Boards of The Art of Yoga Project and Lineage Project. She is co-founder of the Yoga Service Council at Omega Institute and the Meditation Working Group of Occupy Wall Street. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising from Virginia Commonwealth University, and went on to train at Spirit Rock in their Mindful Yoga and Meditation training (2012), Community Dharma Leaders’ Training (2017), and will complete the Spirit Rock 4-year Residential Retreat Teacher Training in 2020. “All of my years of being out there on the front lines, working in jails,” Booker says, “at the end of the day it all comes down to love. Not in that weak sentimental way, but in that way that is strong and powerful.” Join us in conversation with this compassionate teacher who deepened in the power of love after teaching on the front lines of a broken criminal justice system! The remarkable sujatha baliga will be moderating the conversation.
Dhamma Dena Queer Retreat October 2 to October 16, 2018 (Week 2) Recording provided by Lotus Insight Sangha: https://www.lotusinsightsangha.org/
Leslie Booker was working as a wardrobe stylist, dressing models for a living, and was looking for a way to transition out of the industry and her winding path -- she lives a nomadic lifestyle -- eventually brought her to becoming a meditation teacher. A Navy brat who grew up in Virginia and Japan, Booker is also an activist who was involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement and has worked with incarcerated youth, and she shared her thoughts on how the Dharma has changed the way she approaches activism.
Social justice, yoga and mindfulness… Leslie Booker (profile) (a.k.a. Booker), who brings her heart, wisdom, and compassion to the intersection of social justice, yoga, and mindfulness, joins Julie Chan in the MouthMedia Network studios powered by Sennheiser. An inclination to help, working with vulnerable populations, and three poisons Booker discusses mapping that went back to Ronald Reagan, seeing people experiencing homelessness, and how her heart is inclined toward needs for help. How sense of groundedness and peace in yoga and meditation fits into helping with issues. How meditation helps bring things up and to our truth and gives us tools to work with. Work with vulnerable populations, making note of when body comes to rest, creating boundaries to take care of ourselves, working with staff now, training others to do what she was doing, activism because of crazy world, and how we live in a culture founded on the three poisons — hatred, greed and delusion. The delusion of power, dharma, and incorporating activism Taking a pause, and seeing humanity in others allows freedom from holding on to others. How we’ve been trained to be competitive, that power is a delusion, and our habit of squashing another to get there. “Power over” vs. “power with”. “This and also” vs. “this, not that”. Leaning into relationships and listening. How people are scared of what they think they already have, that fighting against doesn’t work and the meaning of dharma and why she loves it. A rolling retreat for the March for Racial Justice, her time during the Occupy Wall Street movement, listening to people’s stories, and being involved in many of teachings down there. How she had taken a long time away from activism, and wanted to incorporate activism with her practice and realized people need a space to be human. The expectation in activism to be a martyr, pushing for the movement, but people are exhausted with often a 24hour way of living.Reclaiming energy, taking action, and lifting up together How Booker and others would offer meditation in the park to bring them back to humanity, bring compassion and love for themselves, reclaiming energy. How she started project to support sustainability, so people could be deeper into their bodies – she realized something about integration of mindfulness and activism. How she learned suffering isn’t something we just have to live in and how to navigate working with vulnerable populations. Taking action. Mindfulness in America, dharma, social justice, yoga and mindfulness. Working with people who are learning how to meet with people who are trying to harm us. And how lifting up together we can get where we want.
