Sean Williams, author of 5 million words, is famous for his hugely successful forays into the worlds of Star Wars, Dr Who, the Marvel Universe and more, but did you know he also writes ghost stories for young readers? ”Honour Among Ghosts” and “Her Perilous Mansion” are exciting, mysterious, witty and clever reads, officially for 8-12 year olds, but really for anyone who enjoys a rollicking adventure. + It's a case of “Art vs Mother' in two “gloriously unhinged…yet deeply philosophical” novels celebrated by our special guest Associate Professor Kylie Cardell. In “Nightbitch” Rachel Yoder's protagonist unleashes her inner canine to navigate the new imperatives of motherhood. In “All Fours” Miranda July's heroine, also at a hormonal crossroad, finds a space to explore who she is and what she will make of her changing reality. Guests Sean Williams, author of “Her Perilous Mansion”and “Honour Among Ghosts”. He's the NYTimes Bestselling author of 50 books and over 120 short stories. January can be a difficult month for a lot of people, but we must hold onto hope even in the longest and darkest days. Niall is joined by Dan Murphy, lead singer of Irish band Hermitage Green. The band's latest single ‘Younger Days' comes with a profound and timely message about our current mental health crisis, something Dan has seen burgeoning in his own hometown of Limerick, which has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. Dan explains why now felt like the right time to address this topic in their music, and how the beautiful spoken word piece by Gregory David Roberts came to be. He and Niall also discuss the complexity of masculinity, how it's leading men to the bridge of the River Shannon and why reconnecting with community and spirituality may be the thing that brings us back to hope. Today I'm joined by cinematographer Stefan Duscio to discuss his latest work, the Apple TV+ series, Shantaram. Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Gregory David Roberts, the 1980s set drama follows a fugitive who escapes prison and reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. Shantaram is the first Apple TV series that uses anamorphic lenses and frame in a 2.40 aspect ratio. When shooting the series Duscio pursued smooth camera movement and widescreen anamorphic because in his own words, “I wanted you to fall in love with Bombay, and unashamedly present it in a romantic way." Duscio teamed up with production designer Chris Kennedy (Lion) for visual research into 1980s India. In addition to the novel, inspiration for the visual language and aesthetic came from a plethora of art that included street and fashion photography, National Geographic content, and per Duscio, "feelings of travel, wanderlust and philosophy." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

Data is at the heart of healthcare. Without data, we would not have the myriad of treatments and cures that help people live longer and better lives. Without data, the healthcare system would be subject to more administrative complexity and duplication. Today we're going to discuss data platforms and interoperability and with us is Troy Bannister, CEO & Founder of Particle Health. Particle Health is a company that offers an API platform that allows organizations to develop innovative solutions and access healthcare data through standard interoperability protocols. Show Notes: Books: The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building A Business When There Is No Easy Answer by Ben Horowitz; & Shantaram: A Novel by Gregory David Roberts.
“For us, the Metaverse is a way to increase accessibility to communities,” says Daniel Liebeskind, CEO of the platform Topia, part of the Metaverse that's taking the internet from asynchronous, static forms like email and forums, to synchronous, real-time interactions, sharing content with other people versus by oneself. This creator and user focused content means that people will form communities and gain access to worlds based on shared context, much like we do in the real world. Users will be able to customize their experience, own their own data, and by disimmediating any one centralized ecosystem, be able to take that data from one platform to another. There is no replacement for in-person events, but the metaverse provides a viable alternative that narrows the socio-economic divide that might otherwise prohibit some participants. This decentralization of power is one of the most promising and enduring aspects about the future of cryptocurrency. Other current popular speculations about the value of cryptocurrency, like NFTs make Daniel roll his eyes, and he goes into more depth about those here. What is worthy of concern is the dystopian future ushered in by AI, which several major corporations seem determined to make inevitable. The key to avoiding this is providing alternative outlets for the experience, for entrepreneurs to work together to be mindful and he discusses companies who are doing just that. Quotes: “I realized that I don't need to figure a whole bunch of things out. Entrepreneurs are just people who are super deeply passionate about something, and are going to do whatever it takes to manifest that in the world.” (5:17-5:30 | Daniel) “If you're in a 1,000 person Zoom experience, one person is talking to everyone else and all those other people aren't really able to interact with each other. That's not how it works in real life. That's not how communities form. (12:25-12:37 | Daniel) “The thing that I find really fascinating is the idea of shared backends, public databases, being able to be more creator and user-oriented, own your own data, be able to bring it with you from platform to platform and disimmediate any one centralized ecosystem.” (26:30-26:49 | Daniel) “The speculative valuation frenzy around any one of these bubbles doesn't really matter. What matters is the underlying technology and the ideas they represent. (27:18-27:27 | Daniel) “In the case of NFTs, owning a token represents is a ticket to a community.” (32:38-32:47 | Daniel) “One use case that exists now that I think will exist in the future, kind of like how sharks existed during the dinosaur age and they still exist, is decentralized finance. The ability to disimmediate banks. (35:02-35:19 | Daniel) “The term ‘metaverse' was actually coined by Neil Stevenson in a book called Snowcrash about 30 years ago and that was a very dystopian concept. The end of humanity as we knew it. Even Ready Player One, which is more modern is very dystopian. Everybody works and lives in a digital space and they don't know each other in real life, they never interact. It's incredibly dystopian. That's not what we should be hoping for, but it is what may happen if we're not careful.” (41:06-41:40 | Daniel) Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926 Connect with Daniel Liebeskind:LinkedIn: dliebeskindTwitter: @dliebeskindInstagram: @exploremagicCheck out Daniel Liebeskind's recommended reads: Zero to One: Notes on Startups or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters https://www.indiebound.org/search/book?keys=Zero+to+One Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman https://www.indiebound.org/search/book?keys=Traction Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts https://www.indiebound.org/search/book?keys=Shantaram Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Billion Dollar Tech on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Elliott Bisnow is the Co-Founder of Summit, whose family of organizations includes Powder Mountain, Summit Series, and Summit Junto. He's also a startup investor in 50 companies like Uber, Coinbase, Warby Parker, and Albert. Elliott describes his passion for building companies and cultures, connecting deeply with people on his teams, and building events and communities. He believes that what is good for business should be what is good for the community and the world. https://bit.ly/TLP-318 Key Takeaways [2:20] Elliott Bisnow is focused on building companies with a great culture, and teams he loves, connecting deeply with the people who work at the Summit businesses, designing and building events and experiences, and meeting the people that come. He loves building communities and getting to understand them. He loves creating teams he wants to be part of. Elliott is a people person. [4:31] The least important part of any business is caring about profits and making money. Those things come from a well-run business with a great product. Good entrepreneurs, good CEOs, and good leaders are obsessed and focused on the thing that their company is making or selling. Consider why you are an entrepreneur. What are you bringing to the world? Elliott loves designing products. [6:239] Elliott recalls growing up watching MTV's Cribs and seeing the Forbes 400 list, which he remembers with negative associations. He remembers the first group of entrepreneurs he met who cared about the product, the customers, and the communities they were serving. He contrasts the old business model of profit-seeking with a new business model focused on the good of the community. [11:09] Are new entrepreneurs better people or do they just talk more about what they do in the community than the CEOs of the '90s talked about? Growing up, Elliott never heard of CEOs doing good in the community. He realized he could build businesses that combine profits and purpose. He says, “Profit Enough. What's good for our business should be good for the community and the world.” [12:46] It's a lot more enjoyable to do business when your team is happy, when your community is happy, and when you feel good about what you're creating. [13:44] Elliott liked college as a place to start a business because you have your dorm, food, and classes even if the business fails. His first two businesses in college didn't work. His third idea did work so he quit college and moved back in with his parents. He made every possible mistake as he learned how to run a startup. The key is to take small risks and make small mistakes and learn from them. [16:56] Elliott builds community by creating things that allow people to self-select into them, being very defined about its mission. However, once people have self-selected into an event, you can find yourself with a lot of similar voices and little diversity. [19:21] Elliott has kept a notepad on his phone for over 10 years. Anytime he hears something or reads something interesting, he writes a note down. He might write one note in a week or three in a day. He has thousands of notes he re-reads. He receives wisdom from other people in two ways: the first way is by reading one book a week; the second is by meeting people in the flow of life and listening to them. [21:45] Elliott has an 80% rule about conversations. In 80% of his conversations, he tries to ask questions. He will ask a question rather than answer one. He finds wisdom from ordinary people. Between his conversations and reading books, he's getting a lot of good ideas. [24:59] When Elliott realized he wanted to be an entrepreneur, he read a lot of very simple books about people's journeys to becoming entrepreneurs. Then he was done reading about entrepreneurs and wanted to go be an entrepreneur. [25:36] Elliott sees that MBA courses would serve people better after the people had experienced some years in business. Elliott spends a lot of time thinking about the books he is going to read. He identifies the types of books he wants to read. He also reads some books for fun. When he meets people that don't read, he suggests books that are just for fun, to get them to fall in love with reading. [27:31] You have to be in a good mindset to sit and read a business book. Elliott will skip a few pages ahead if he gets bored. He doesn't get stuck on pages. Reading is a big part of Elliott's life. [28:30] Elliott discusses the virtues of knowing when to quit and cites Warren Buffet who only makes small mistakes because he knows when to get out of a deal. He's never been in a massive mistake. [29:27] Elliott's view on ideas is that it's quite difficult to come up with good ideas, so you need to create a culture where the most ideas possible can come forward, no matter what they are. That's a hard environment to maintain when people naturally shoot down ideas or want to take credit for them. Elliott says there's no limit to what you can achieve if you give other people credit. [32:03] Elliott describes what it means to be a “favor-economy millionaire.” Build up a network of people with whom you trade for services. Having relationships where you and your network can help each other grow is extremely important. [35:05] Being an entrepreneur or a leader is hard. Making money is hard. Saving money is hard. Bartering makes it easier to do business. Relationships are like muscles and the more that you work with them, the more you nurture the relationships. Give to people and it will come back many times over. [36:32] Elliott's takeaway from his book, Make No Small Plans: Between the life people are living and the life they want to live, there's a lot of white space. Make No Small Plans, is in the context of the life that you want to live. Step out of anything that's held you back. Make plans to get to where you want to be. [40:06] Closing quote: “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald. Quotable Quotes “When you're an entrepreneur, you get to create your own culture and your own team.” “The least important part of any business is caring about profits and making money. Those things come from a well-run business with a great product. … Good entrepreneurs, good CEOs, and good leaders are obsessed and focused on the thing that their company is making or selling.” “At the crux of entrepreneurship is, ‘What is the thing that you're bringing to the world? Why are you an entrepreneur?'” “Just from a personal, selfish standpoint, it's a lot more enjoyable way to do business when your team is happy, when your community is happy, and when you actually feel really good about what you're creating.” “My main takeaway is that, as long as your mistakes are small, there's not very far to fall. … In the early days, the key is taking lots of small risks.” “There's a lot of emphasis placed on gaining tips and wisdom from super-famous people but I find that there's just as much wisdom to be had from every person in the world.” “The most important thing about reading is falling in love with reading. And so most people who don't read, I give them a few books that are just fun.” “You have to be in a good mindset to be able to sit and read a business book. And then I've developed a couple of tricks when it comes to reading, like skipping forward and if things are boring, don't let it hold you back; don't get stuck on pages.” “There are certain things where quitting is a virtue and it's a good skill to have.” “Between the life people want to live, and the life that they're living, there's a lot of white space. When I think about Make No Small Plans, it's in the context of the life that you want to live.” Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Elliott Bisnow on LinkedIn Make No Small Plans: Lessons on Thinking Big, Chasing Dreams, and Building Community, by Elliott Bisnow, Brett Leve, Jeff Rosenthal, and Jeremy Schwartz Summit Powder Mountain Summit Junto Uber Coinbase Warby Parker Albert MTV Cribs Forbes 400 Allen-Bradley Shantaram: A Novel, by Gregory David Roberts Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, by Barak Obama Decision Points, by George W. Today's quote: "I do not think that light is God. I think it is possible, and it is reasonable to say, that light is the language of God. Light may be the way that god speaks to the universe, and us." -Gregory David Roberts, author of Shantaram For more information about The Dreams Course, email Steven at thedreamscourse@yahoo.com
Gregory David Roberts is the author of best selling novel, Shantaram and sequel, Mountain Shadow. Selling over 6 million copies, it is partly based on Gregory's own life experience of escaping prison in Australia and being on the run, during which time he lived in a slum in India. After ten years as a fugitive, Gregory was re-captured in Germany and spent time in both solitary confinement and maximum security before being released over seven years later. After five years on parole, Gregory finished writing Shantaram, got it published and sold the movie rights. After withdrawing from society around seven years ago, and going 'off grid,' Gregory committed himself to exploring and researching spirituality in a 'leap of faith'. This resulted in him writing a book called The Spiritual Path; a personal account of his journey looking at science, belief, faith and devotion. Gregory tells me his story about escaping from prison and being on the run for ten years. He reflects on how his time in prison and how solitary confinement was transformative for him. He talks about what it's like to be a fugitive, when the need to 'fit in' and go undetected is paramount and he shares his experience of living in an Indian slum. We talk about faith and how having purpose has the potential to ease the most dire of circumstances. We talk about self and ego, as well as the importance of devotion, and Gregory gives some sage advice for the spirituality curious (despite his protestations that he is ineligible to provide advice on such matters). Excitingly, Gregory shares some intel about the upcoming Apple + series of Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam (if you've read the book you'll no doubt be as excited as I am). And finally, he gives some great words of wisdom which are certainly evidence of a life less ordinary.Pick up a copy of Shantaram here and The Spiritual Path here.Find Sophie Elwes on Instagram.

He would sometimes work all day in the restaurant, leave to play a night-time gig, sleep a few hours and then show up again for his work shift. As the years passed, and as adult responsibilities increased, he found himself as a chef in the corporate world with endless work hours, rare family time and too worn out to create his music. Realizing this wasn't sustainable he and his wife decided to open their own restaurant and catering business in honor of work-life balance (they intentionally do not serve dinner) and farm-to-table sensibilities (even the chorizo and curry paste are made from scratch!) with time enough for his recording projects. He reminds us that multiple creative mediums can overflow into each other, lots of motivation can come from loving what you are doing and most importantly that keeping a hold of your creative life is just as important as keeping a hold of the rest of your life. Each week at Auxano HQ we have a team planning session, but this week we found ourselves discussing how exhausted and run down we all felt as a result of the HUGE 2 years we (and you too!) have ALL had. Our conversation turned pretty quickly to what each of us is and can be doing more of to take care of our own needs and show ourselves a little much needed love. Let’s face it. We can never give what we don’t have. It’s vital we find time to fill our own cups so that we can always show up to the world as our best selves. Part way through our meeting, Greg smiled and said “I think our listeners might be feeling a bit this way too. Why don’t we share this conversation?” Today, we have decided to do a special episode to share with you a list of things each member of Team Auxano does to love on ourselves a little and fill our cups. Tune in and let’s fill our own cups together! You know her as a wise yogi, but let me reintroduce you to Ahlia, the former professional surfer and experienced scuba diver! Outside of yoga, Ahlia is extremely passionate about our oceans. All the time she has spent in the water has lead her to become quite knowledgable about many problems our waters are facing, like pollution and dying coral reefs. In Part 2 of this conversation, Ahlia is teaching us about ocean conservation and how we can help! To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com Did you know that 4 billion pounds of trash enter our oceans every year? Statistics like these are what Ahlia is sharing with us today, and while they are sad to hear, they are also things that can't be ignored. Ahlia is going to tell us some ways that we can be more mindful to prevent all this garbage from outnumbering our sea life! She also shares what is has been like overcoming her fear of sharks and what she has learned that can help avoid tragic things like shark attacks. Lastly, Ahlia educated me on the topic of coral reef conservation. I truly didn't know just how important coral reefs are to our ecosystem (not to mention the safety of mankind!) and the fact that they are endangered. I learned so much during this conversation and I know you will too! Even though some of these facts about what's happening in our seas are hard to hear, the message that Ahlia shares is equally as empowering. It is never too late to start making a difference, and Ahlia is going to tell us how we can do just that! You've heard me say it before - little changes add up to big change. Let's learn and practice mindfulness together!
