He-Man and the Masters of the Universe not only introduced a generation of kids to new toys, cartoons, and movies; but it also changed the way all of those were marketed. This week we look back at the 40th anniversary of the toys and how they influenced us.   By the power of Greyskull, we have the scoop on how He-Man and the Masters of the Universe influenced a generation of kids and the whole toy industry.    News We have more news on the return of Quantum Leap Get ready for a new Highlander, but this time it's Henry Cavill  Mark Hamill's Jack in the Box exploits can now be read about in a FREE comic book! Love Death + Robots has been renewed for a fourth season Fo shizzle, you've just gotta try out Snoop Dogg's new cereal, Snoop Loopz We are pumped up about Tim Burton's new Netflix Addam's Family series called Wednesday What we're Enjoying Shua was interested and entertained by the Disney+ documentary series called Light and Magic. It was an origin story of the innovative special effects company Industrial Light and Magic. You may be surprised how their necessity to innovate has changed the way movies are made. Jay finally got to the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomex. It's a fun mystery ride that keeps you guessing and laughing.     Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Sci-Fi Saturdays look at a great outing in the Star Trek movie franchise. Star Trek: First Contact may have been the second Next Generation film, but it felt like a first epic outing. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, it was a sci-fi, time-traveling, character-developing, action packed romp through the ST universe. Jay breaks it all down and gets you pumped to revisit the Borg and the crew of the Enterprise.  And don't forget his articles on MCULocationScout.com for some great, interactive maps of filming locations.    Enjoy Toys! In 1982, Mattel's battle for dominance over the juggernaut of Hasbro and their Star Wars action figures finally began to put a chink in their rival's armor when they released a new line of toys for boys called He-Man and Masters of the Universe.    Despite not having background originating in movies, cartoons, or comic books, these toys used many of the aspects that boys were craving in the early 80's, fantasy and power. To sell the toys to distributors like Toys R Us, Mattel ordered mini comics to go with the toys, and later a Lou Scheimer, Filmation animated series.    The model was an incredible success! Toys flew off the shelves and their profits soared! Not only that but it set the standard for selling a wide variety of toys by using media to promote it. Transformers, GI Joe, Care Bears…You almost couldn't watch an 80's cartoon that wasn't connected to a toy line.    In addition to all of those and the merchandise that followed, He-Man also inspired a live action movie starring Dolf Lundgren as the title character and legendary actor Frank Langella as Skeletor. The movie went in a strange direction by mostly taking place on modern day Earth as opposed to Eternia. While it may not have been a success, it has gained a cult following.    He-Man is still around today, but hasn't achieved the success the company enjoyed in the 80's. Either way, it made a significant impact on several industries and is beloved by a large group of fans.    Did you watch Masters of the Universe? Do you have the power? Did you read all of these show notes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Let's ride a tiger!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. THE RISE OF WEEKDAY AFTERNOON CARTOONS AND THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF SATURDAY MORNINGS… Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Cartoons ruled the airwaves on Saturday mornings. With Hanna-Barbara as the undisputed kids of television animation. But don't think for a moment Filmation was going to fade away that easily.  In 1983 Lou Scheimer would once again lead the charge with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The very first with what would be known as FIRST RUN SYNDICATION. Or more commonly referred to as Weekday Afternoon Cartoons. Much like the way Saturday mornings began, cartoons on the weekday mornings and afternoons were just rebroadcasts of the cartoons originally shown on Saturday mornings during the 1960s and 1970s on what were the UHF Channels. That changed when Scheimer and Filmation had struggled to get the major networks onboard with doing an animated series based on Mattel's Masters of the Universe toy line. They decided to release the show on the independently owned UHF channels throughout the country. The success of MOTU paved the way for other toy shows such as TRANSFORMERS AND GI JOE to follow suit. Because of laws passed that would put an end to the toy shows, Weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings would once again change with the success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the public's interest shows of a similar nature that would introduce viewers to Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs and the Disney Afternoon block of shows. But like all good things, Weekday and Saturday mornings would eventually come to an end. Only to be reborn as something completely different. It's the 1980s all over again. You have the power and now you know the shows introduced in that era were truly truly truly outrageous. And more than meets the eye.

SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS IN THE 1960S AND 1970S… Many have pointed to Lou Scheimer as one of the key architects of Saturday Morning Television as we know it when his company Filmation one upped animation titans Hanna-Barbera by not only purchasing the rights to do the very first Superman cartoon for the Saturday morning market, but also getting Bud Collyer, the man who originally provided the voice for Superman on radio and in the Max Fleischer animations in the 1940s. Before this, most animation broadcast on Saturday television were either old cartoon shorts originally shown in theaters repackaged for television or animated series shown on prime time such as the Flintstones or Johnny Quest. The launch of Superman by Filmation was the beginning of animated shows specifically produced for the Saturday morning market. In the following decades Hanna-Barbera would catch up to Filmation, flooding the market with a glut of television series. Some are more memorable than others. In part one, Bret, Kevin and Andrew discuss and look back at some of their favorite shows growing up. So wake up early and watch the test pattern with a bowl of cereal as you once again wait for your favorite programs to come on.

TAG Interview with Steve HicknerFind all TAG Interviews on the TAG website at this link Director and story artist Steve Hickner has been in the animation business since Lou Scheimer headed up Filmation (where Steve got his first animation job) and Disney Feature Animation in the Time Before Jeffrey. Steve has worked at DreamWorks Animation since its founding. In a way, he was at DreamWorks Animation before it was DWA ... In the early days of his career, Mr. Hickner never allowed grass to grow under his feet. At Filmation, he worked his way up the corporate ladder to become board supervisor. At Disney, he lobbied for a spot on the animation crew of Who Framed Roger Rabbit ... and got it. Later, when he heard that director Steven Spielberg was forming an animation studio, he interviewed for a job in the new studio twice before landing the gig. Steve remained with Amblimation from its inception to its merger with DreamWorks' animation division several years later. During his time there, he found himself in management positions (something for which, by his own admission, he had minimal training). Later at DreamWorks, he was in the pilot's chair yet again when he co-directed Prince of Egypt, and later Bee Movie. The leadership roles left a strong impression on Mr. Hickner, which inspired him to write a book about them: A few of the things Steve has learned from his decades in the cartoon biz are: 1) Never stop learning, 2) Never dodge a challenge, and 3) Every job you have is one more opportunity to improve your skill set. Remember the drill around here: Today half the audio version of the interview; tomorrow the other half, plus the interview as video, which will (unfortunately) will be missing the last several minutes because of glitches with a newer camera.

In our fourth episode of the SciFi Diner Classic, we interview Michael Struck from NeoFX. Since we do a news and interview show, it goes without saying that the news portion of our episodes often date themselves fast. And while the interviews with the people that make Science Fiction happen remain relevant and in our opinion important, most listeners will not listen back 100 episodes and wade through old news just to get to the interview. So what the SciFi Diner Classic aims to do is to share these interviews with you. If you have been with us from the beginning, then bear with us as we introduce some of our newer listeners to voices from the past. Let me know what you think of this idea. Like it? Hate it? Let me know. We're bringing you just the interview and nothing else. Special effects animator Michael Struck from NeoFX has animated such fan films as Star Trek: Of God's and Men, Starship Farragut, and Browncoats: Redemption. He also talks about meeting Lou Scheimer.
