Foundations of Amateur Radio
What's the story you'd like to tell yourself?

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2025 4:20

Foundations of Amateur Radio When you joined the global community of radio amateurs you did so with a perspective that represented, at the time, what you thought the hobby was and how it operated. Since then, years, months, even days ago, that perspective has shifted in both subtle and obvious ways. One of my local amateur radio clubs, Ham College, was specifically formed to provide amateur radio education and license exams. It's where I went to get my Foundation license in 2010 and it's where many of the local amateurs have been taught over the years. For years I've been semi-regularly visiting Ham College during their Foundation course sessions. The purpose of my visit is to share what it's like to be an amateur, what things you don't really know about before you get licensed, and what things to look out for when you are. In general I talk about how to find the rest of the community, what you can expect and what to do with your license once you pass the exam. I try to cover the highlights without overwhelming the audience who technically are not yet amateurs at the time I'm sharing my thoughts. I talk about the endless variety of amateur radio activities, from activating anything that's not moving, or anything that is, depending on the level of adrenaline required, through contesting, camping and bushwalking, antennas, endless antennas and electronics. I talk about low power versus high power, and about community expectations in relation to upgrading to a "real" license. In case you're wondering, a "real" amateur license is any amateur license, including the Foundation license I hold, the introductory license. In my view, ultimately, this is your hobby, where you decide when and how much you want more responsibility and decide to pursue what this means for you. I discuss that the amateur radio community is global, attracting people from all walks of life, from submariners to scientists, from tow truck drivers to teachers, aged from nine to ninety, across all languages. I also touch on some of the less fun aspects of our hobby, specifically bullies. Over the years you've heard me discuss diversity, equity and inclusion in our community and also how there is a vocal minority who make it their mission to present obstacles to anyone who is different in any way. As I've said previously, the only antidote against this intimidation is to call it out and make your views heard, "this is not in the spirit of amateur radio", rather than change the dial and move on. In case you're wondering, changing the dial does nothing to address the issue and has a lasting effect on anyone else on frequency who might feel, or worse, has been, threatened by the bully. I also point out that this obnoxious behaviour is an exception, even if you feel personally attacked, and what you might do and whom you might talk to. For the record, my door is always open. Another example of what I discuss is the local amateur news and the weekly net for new and returning amateurs, F-Troop, midnight UTC on Saturday for an hour, a place where you can ask questions and discuss your issues with a supportive international community of amateurs. As you can tell, I'm not shy in voicing my opinion. Although I set myself a limit of 15 minutes, of late I've been wondering what other things might be of interest to someone who is just taking their first steps on their amateur radio adventure, hours away from taking their exam. What kinds of things would you have liked to know when you started your amateur journey? Get in touch, my address is cq@vk6flab.com. Don't be shy, express your opinion, it's the only thing that changes the world. What do you want the amateurs of tomorrow to know today? How would you equip yourself if you had the chance to start again? I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Plus, Jim looks back on a trifecta of mediocre (to him) shows, but also details (perhaps the only time) Jan Murray got a few laughs! Spencer (Larry Storch), Tracy the Gorilla (Bob Burns) and Kong (Forrest Tucket) are bumbling detectives fighting vampires, monsters, ghosts and the like. There's a little bit of Borscht Belt comedy, some vaudeville humor and a lot of silly gags. Some famous character actors show up as bad guys like Ted Knight as a ghost, Bernie Kopell as Dr. Frankenstein and Jim Backus as Eric the Red. If you loved F-Troop, you'd probably enjoy Storch and Tucker here. Then, after the success of Scooby Doo for Hanna Barbera in the early 1970s, there were quite a number of mystery-solving teens with animal sidekicks and we spotlight a couple of them: The Funky Phantom and Goober and the Ghost Chasers. Kids, when we say popular culture was better in the old days, just point to some of these and say “Not so fast.”

And that doesn't even begin to tell the story of his roles in The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Doctor Detroit or F-Troop. We talk about Richard's years growing up in Westwood where we find out he and our host went to the same high school as well as Richard's years acting and doing improv which led to roles in Troma's Toxic Avenger, Sam Arkoff's Q: The Winged Serpent, and Larry Cohen's It's Alive!. Most importantly, this might be the only podcast where you learn that Robin Williams studied Improv at the Pitzer colleges, Richard's alma mater. It's all next, when we talk to Rick Dalton, I mean Richard Duggan, on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Andy was a loner most of the time. But as a teenager, he fell in with a group of scruffy rebels who shared his affinity for street theater, mayhem, and the sleazy corners of New York City in the 1960s. They called themselves F Troop, and would remain an inseparable cabal of nonconformists through the rest of Andy's life. This is the seventh episode of The Current Rewind's "10 Pivotal Days at First Avenue" season. If you missed the first six episodes, catch up below. • April 3, 1970 (The day it all began)• Nov. 28-29, 1979 (The days that told the future)• Sept. 27, 1982 (Bad Brains/Sweet Taste of Afrika/Hüsker Dü)• Aug. 3, 1983 (The birth of "Purple Rain")• Oct. 22, 1990 (Sonic Youth/Cows/Babes in Toyland)• March 4, 1991 (Ice Cube/WC and the MAAD Circle) Transcript of The Current Rewind season 2, episode 7: "Nov. 2, 2004" Cecilia Johnson VO: Hey, it's Cecilia, host and producer of The Current Rewind. If you're listening to this the day it drops, it's Election Day in the U.S. You may be wondering what a First Ave podcast is doing in your feed, today of all days. Well, first, we wanted to encourage you to vote, if you haven't already. On the flip side, if you're seeking a few moments of respite, we got you. Third, a while back, I noticed a really weird coincidence: This episode takes place on Election Day itself. They celebrate their mutual successes, but it soon becomes clear to Sinclair and Judge Fulton that Angie's success may be thanks to his talents as a gangland assassin. Meanwhile, the judge expects Danny and Sinclair to keep an American union boss alive while he takes in the Cannes Film Festival. Will they accomplish their mission? And will Danny accept that Angie is a no-good hitman? Erik and Justin imagine Roger Moore and Tony Curtis taking over Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. They also discuss the miscasting of F-Troop's Larry Storch as Angie. Erik ends up becoming very taken with Angie's attractive assistant assassin. The duo chat about their favored James Bond films as it is required by international statute. THE VASE NEVER DISAPPOINTS! Picture the scene if you can, Falmouth Town two goals down with barely seconds remaining when they get a lifeline for what surely was only going to be a consolation goal at best! Luke Brabyn made no mistake from the penalty spot and into added on time. Time for everything, including the kitchen sink, to be thrown at the Longlevens goal. A cross comes in from the right and while flooring one of his team-mates, the visitors goalkeeper on the edge of his penalty area punches the ball away with the ball bouncing towards Jack Webber. On the half-volley Jack hits the ball back towards goal with the F-Troop doing what they can behind that goal to suck the ball into the back of the net! Everyone in the ground are on their feet applauding an absolute amazing equaliser and thinking 'could the comeback be completed with a winner?' Falmouth's James Miller sums it up "there's something special about the FA Vase!" (Apologies about the quality of the sound on this clip, but I think you get the message!)

Steve Buckhantz, TV Play by Play Announcer for Washington Wizards in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town. Janice said to me one day, "Andy, you're a has been, but maybe you could get back into action by doing a podcast." And I said to her, "What is a podcast?" That was it, seriously Steve. Two years ago, and she put me on the road to recovery. Janice is a- Janice Iacona Ockershausen: So do you want to introduce Steve so people know who you're talking to? Andy Ockershausen: I'm sorry. Buckhantz needs no introduction. I thought everybody knew he was here. I told everybody he was. Steve Buckhantz: If it were TV they'd know, but radio has no pictures. Andy Ockershausen: Steve Buckhantz is such a absolute icon, and that's a terrible say for a man this young, but it was a time there was Glen Brenner, and there was Gordon Peterson, and there were names everywhere. They're all gone now. Thank God we still have Buckhantz, and we have Buckhantz and the world champion, I hope, Wizards some day. Steve Buckhantz: That's nice of you. That's nice of you, Andy. I go back in DC to 1984 is when I came back here, but I'm born and raised here as you know. Steve Buckhantz: Washington-Lee High School Alumnus Andy Ockershausen: Washington-Lee High School. It's incredible isn't it? Andy Ockershausen: Had one of my sons born at Columbia. Steve Buckhantz: Yup, they- Andy Ockershausen: It was for women at one time, but then it turned into general. Steve Buckhantz: Yeah, that's what they called it, and they tore that down after I was born I think. I don't think they wanted to make the same mistake twice. Andy Ockershausen: The weather department bought that building and tore it down and built a new one. But Steve- Steve Buckhantz: Yeah. Raised in Arlington and W&L High School, a very famous high school, which they're getting ready to change the name of, but a very famous high school that- Andy Ockershausen: They're dropping Lee? Other Well-Known Washington-Lee High School Alumni Steve Buckhantz: Well, they're not dropping it. They're getting rid of the whole Washington-Lee, and I don't know what the new name will be, but at any rate you had Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine grew up in Arlington and went to that high school. Sandra Bullock was nine years after me. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Ken Hunter. Steve Buckhantz: Ken Hunter, yes. Forrest Tucker from F Troop, great sports athletes like Jake Scott who was a super bowl MVP went to W&L. Eric Sievers, John Lippold was a kicker. Reggie Harrison was great running back. Andy Ockershausen: God, Steve, you've got them all. Steve Buckhantz: John Hummer who was a great basketball player here, he and his brother Ed at Princeton, and John went on to play for the Buffalo Braves. Andy Ockershausen: I'm gonna one up you with a guy that you don't know, but his name was Myron Gerber. His father was, they started Drug Fair. How about that? Steve Buckhantz: Oh really? How about that? Andy Ockershausen: He was Washington-Lee, he went to Naval Academy. Steve Buckhantz: Stanley McChrystal. Andy Ockershausen: A Jew in the navy. He was the first one, I'm serious.

This week's episode is a minicast, an interview with Paula Finn, author of Sitcom Writers Talk Shop: Behind the Scenes with Carl Reiner, Norman Lear, and Other Geniuses of TV Comedy. It's a collection of interviews with some of the finest writers in television history, including big names like Reiner, Lear, James L. Brooks, Larry Charles, Phil Rosenthal, Mike Reiss, and Al Jean, and some important figures lesser-known outside of TV nerd fandom like Treva Silverman, Leonard Stern, and husband and wife team Austin and Irma Kalish.  These people contributed foundational work in the art of television. Reiner wrote on Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour and created The Dick Van Dyke Show. Lear is responsible for more great sitcoms than you can count, including All In the Family, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Maude, and One Day At A Time. Brooks co-created Mary Tyler Moore, Taxi, Rhoda, and The Simpsons. Silverman wrote for Mary Tyler Moore and The Monkees, Stern for Get Smart, The Honeymooners, and The Phil Silvers Show. Austin and Irma Kalish had a wide-ranging career writing on everything from F Troop to All In the Family. I could spend this entire introduction giving you credits, and it would read like a list of every show you've ever loved. Luckily, I don't have to do that because Finn has written the book, and you can pick that up on Amazon or wherever fine books about comedy are sold. And Finn has a particularly interesting vantage point from which to write about television. Her father, Herb Finn, was a sitcom writer who worked on The Honeymooners, The Flintstones, Gilligan's Island, and others. I caught up with Finn by phone to talk about the book, television, and growing up with a funny father.

Today on Ep 005: Opening Remarks Events - King Cannabis Expo, Spokane WA Strain of The Week OG x Chem Terpene Sauce Vocab- What does “OG” stand for?  The Lee Family  “Curse” Thanks to supporters, Like and Subscribe   Intro Welcome to the latest installment of The Baked and Awake Show, where we get together, usually once a week- and chop it up about all things Cannabis here in the Beautiful Pacific Northwest. I tend to open most episodes with some light cannabis consumption, and a bit of conversation about everybody’s favorite semi illicit houseplant. Once we are good and stoney, we’ll turn things towards interesting stories, mysteries, and popular, unpopular, and sometimes obscure conspiracy theories- especially those with connections to the Pac NW.   NOTE: Host and guests record the show in Washington State. All Cannabis use is legal and conducted with as much decorum as possible while still having fun. Viewers and Listeners should be adults and understand that this show is not suitable for children. The Content Creator does not advocate or promote the underage use of Drugs, Alcohol, or Cannabis, nor excessive use of the same by adults caring for or closely associated with children. We are responsible adults, parents,  and we think decent folks. We’ll hold ourselves to a reasonably high standard for class and taste- and you should, too.   Thank you, everyone, everywhere, anytime, for joining me today for this our latest show. I am excited to share some really fun cannabis related trivia today, and maybe a little bit more. We are also going to continue our journey through time via our (www.Rediscoverpot.org) Hemp History Timeline, starting at just about 1800, where we find ourselves beginning to see the modern era loom close on the horizon for both humanity and our intrepid companions, Indica and Sativa.  From there we will probably take a big ol’ dab before diving in deep on an equally major double mystery. Those were the strange deaths by misadventure suffered by budding Hollywood star Brandon Lee- 28, tragically killed during the filming of his breakthrough role,1993’s  The Crow, and twenty years prior, the equally untimely demise of Brandon’s father, the legendary international martial arts movie superstar Bruce Lee, 32 while filming Game of Death. In each case, the movies were eventually finished (with major changes to accommodate the loss of their starring actor) and released to audiences anyway. Both men’s deaths were surrounded by conspiracy theories, some of which persist to this day.     Before we get to all that, however, I wanted to take a moment to make a couple of follow up comments about my recent trip to Seattle’s Hempfest with my family. I wanted to point out that, while 100 percent supportive of my cannabis lifestyle, career choice, all of it- Nicole does not and has not ever really used cannabis. Aside from a few experiences with various edible products, (with mixed results!) She’s just not into it. This is important to understand up front so that you will believe me when I say that we did not partake with, or while in contact with any young students or former students of Nicoles’ at the event. I would also remind everyone that Hempfest is an all ages event and that many young people attend without any intention or requirement for partaking of the marijuanas merely due to being in attendance. Does it occur? Undoubtedly. Did we witness it this year? I don’t think so. Anyway- my wife is a wonderful, upstanding, positive role model for her students and I just wanted to be crystal clear on that matter before moving on.      Old Business Vocabulary, General: Delineate de·lin·e·ate dəˈlinēˌāt/ verb verb: delineate; 3rd person present: delineates; past tense: delineated; past participle: delineated; gerund or present participle: delineating describe or portray (something) precisely. "the law should delineate and prohibit behavior that is socially abhorrent" Origin  mid 16th century (in the sense ‘trace the outline of something’): from Latin delineat- ‘outlined,’ from the verb delineare, from de- ‘out, completely’ + lineare (from linea ‘line’).   Carl Linnaeus is famous for his work in Taxonomy, the science of identifying, naming and classifying organisms (plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, etc.). He was born in 1707, the eldest of five children, in a place called Råshult, in Sweden. His father, called Nils, was a minister and keen gardener. He would often take his young son Carl into the garden with him and teach him about botany (the study of plants). By the age of five, Carl had his own garden, which gave him a great thirst for learning about plants and how they work. Great little shop with a large selection and an excellent staff. Look for Barry and give him daps.   Hemp History Timeline EP 03 left us in 1798, where Napoleon bans Cannabis in Egypt..     Baked Closing Remarks   (Part Two?)   Awake Topic- The Lee Family “Curse”   NOTE: Before we begin- Bruce Lee was an idol of mine growing up. He was light years ahead of his contemporaries, and while Kung Fu movies were still a fringe niche within film offerings in the US at the time, many thousands, perhaps millions of impressionable young boys like myself grew up in the 1970’s and 80’s watching an endless stream of low budget action movies on the TV during our summer vacations. Infinitely superior to The Waltons, Andy Griffith Show, or endless reruns of Green Acres, Gilligan’s Island, LIttle House, and F-Troop were these action packed fantasies about Brave Warriors, Beautiful Damsels who wielded swords of their own, and downright creepy and unbelievable, Seemingly supernatural old Monks, Generals, and Kung Fu Wizards. Now these were movies! Still- they were super cheesy, and they are frankly hard to watch these days upon re visitation. Bruce Lee’s movies were and are nothing of the sort. He stood head and shoulders above the rest,(plot, production value, mass appeal, etc) and you can still see this when watching his movies today. Bruce’s Jeet Kune Do, in many ways- foreshadowed today’s Modern Mixed Martial Arts, especially as expressed within the now sanctioned sporting organization of the Ultimate Fighting Championships. I have good reason, as do probably many, to believe that Bruce, if his prime years age had coincided with the era of  the rise of UFC style fighting- that he would have adapted yet further in his development and evolution of his unique style (A combination of over 23 traditional Martial Arts disciplines as well as elements of Western Boxing, Wrestling, and more) and been very successful indeed. Were, that is- he were interested in further competition of any sort which is by no means clear.   I do this piece on Bruce and Brandon to honor their memories, not to speculate uselessly on deaths 25 and 44 years in the past, respectively. The Lee family has never supported or given breath to the many theories surrounding the circumstances of the two men’s demises, and I feel it only fair to point this out at this time.  Bruce and Brandon are survuved by Bruce’s wife and Brandon’s Mother, Linda Lee, as well as Shannon Lee, Brandon’s younger sister (Born 1972).     Can both Bruce and Brandon Lee’s deaths,  all too young at age 32 and 28 respectively- be laid at the feet of Chinese Triads, Japanese Gangsters, or even a dreaded family curse, or were both men’s demises nothing more than pure bad luck and outrageous coincidence?   Topic Bullet Points: Bruce’s Parents feared a demon was after their son. Rumors of a feud between Lee, a prolific teacher of Western Students- and the Chinese Triads, who did not want the secrets of their martial arts disseminated. Bruce was plagued by prophetic dreams of his own early death. Bruce’s character in Game of Death is “shot by a would be assassin” in the film. Bruce collapses while filming Game of Death, dies while the film is still not complete from an apparent allergic reaction to the unusual pain killer/muscle relaxer provided him by a friend and fellow actor ,
