Both the Chicago Sun-Times AND the Philadelphia Inquirer unknowingly published an AI-generated summer reading list featuring completely made-up books. King Features, a Hearst syndicate that licenses content nationally, produced the 56-page insert called “Heat Index: Your Guide to the Best of Summer,” which also included things like summer foods and summer activity recommendations. The journalist who wrote the piece, Marco Buscaglia, used AI to help create the reading list and unfortunately did not double check the work, so did not see the fake book titles attributed to real-live best-selling authors. King Features did not fact check Marco's work (rookie mistake!). The Chicago Sun and the Philly Inquirer did not double check the insert from King (another rookie mistake!). The papers' readers alerted the papers to what was up (heroes!) and the papers issued apologies for the mistake. More importantly, Theo learns a new word this episode that he will never use again!
The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is nothing if not a podcast of juxtapositions and contrasts, like mixing vintage TV shows with digital platforms, and necking Malibu and Quatro out of the antique sherry glasses. And it's this grating collision of 1980s futurism and sepia-toned yesteryear to which the hosts turn once again, because everyone knows it's not really a horror-season if you don't put A Dracula™ in it... Yes, messrs Velvet, Blackout and Bognops break out the garlic and make sure the pooper-scoopers are within arm's reach, as Flash Gordon, The Phantom and a host of King Features chums (as well as a minibus full of their kids) find themselves knee-deep in Transylvanian doings when the Defenders Of The Earth (defenders...) wonder what exactly has gone into Dracula's Potion. How many biological-photocopying superpowers does Dracula have that that even Bram Stoker didn't know about? How does the Grade-2-listed status of a 900yr old Eastern European castle affect a local authority application for an on-site massage parlour with neon-pink accent lighting? And how do the Defenders Of The Earth (defenders...) think that turning up unannounced in a remote woodland village dressed like the Aerobics-Wing of the Gladiators isn't going to lead to a little bit of adverse comment at the very least? Nip round to Phaze for a quick change of clothes, press Play and find out... The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is a free podcast from iPorle Media, which holds production copyright. Dan Schkade is a terrific artist/writer who is currently drawing the Flash Gordon daily strip for King Features. He's also written and drawn a lot of other cool stuff including The Spirit, Battlestar Galactica, Impossible Jones, and his creator-owned titles; Saint John and Lavender Jack. But what you need to know most it's pronounced "SHKah - dee." Like Scotty. Like the dog. Or the Chief Engineer.
Gerry Rasmussen Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Canadian cartoonist Gerry Rasmussen. In this episode, we chat about how Gerry got into drawing, and how he started making money with his artistic skills while still in elementary school by selling on the spot drawings of 'Denis the Menace' to fellow school kids. Next, we get into how he met his co-creator, Gary Delainey at art school. Together, they produce a daily comic strip called 'Betty'. They have been making this comic strip for nearly 50 years, and due to its runs in The Edmonton Journal, and other publications; it is one of the most recognized comics in Canada! Being featured on GoComics.com and syndicated by King Features doesn't hurt either! 'Betty' has been popularized throughout modern popular culture for several decades; even a fun tie-in with The Edmonton Oilers hockey organization. We also touch on some of the children's books Gerry has illustrated, such as 'Sniffy the Beagle' with author Rita Eagle; and the sports books: 'Crazy About Hockey', 'Crazy About Soccer', & 'Crazy About Basketball' by author Loris Lesynski. Finally, we discuss his passion for teaching art to kids and adults. In partnership with a couple of universities in and around Edmonton, Gerry teaches, draws, and motivates the next generation of art enthusiasts. If you happen to see him at Red Deer Polytechnic (formerly Red Deer College), or The Pygmalion School of Art, tell him you heard him on Fascination Street Podcast!Special thanks to Gerry's son Nils Rasmussen (Uncle Outrage) for turning me onto his spectacular father!

Ninety years after his creation, Flash Gordon continues to soar in syndication. Helping us celebrate Alex Raymond's fearless champion this week is current Flash Gordon cartoonist Dan Schkade. Together, we explore why the confident space jock remains relevant and why the electric sexuality associated with the eighties cinematic adaptation is simply an extension of the raw heat present in Raymond's original strips. Since his birth, numerous stylists have had their way with Flash Gordon. He's been the subject of serials, movies, cartoons, and comic books. In his current strip, syndicated by King Features, Dan Schkade honors the eclectic creators who came before him, paying homage to their versions while filtering them through his unique perspective. This is your dad's Flash Gordon, but also yours and your brother's and your sister's. He belongs to every single one of us! What is the appeal of the square-jawed hero? In the wrong hands, such conviction could read as dull or false. Excitement ignites through the scenarios in which Dan Schkade erects around his can't-miss crusader. Each plot is a puzzle, not for the reader to crack, but for the character and the joy occurs in witnessing Flash Gordon solve it. Follow Dan Schkade on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. We did it, ya'll! I finally bagged a celebrity interview! This is one of my favorite online comic drawers and writers: KC rubber-duckin' GREEN! I finished http://backcomic.com/1 after a few-year hiatus on being current. KC was cool enough to answer my quandaries about this comic and bless the internet with stories tangentially related to weed. This man has given me hours of entertainment, and now it's my turn to bless you with a further entertaining hour. KC Green is a cartoonist in Western Massachusetts. He did the comic Gunshow, which spawned the books “Anime Club”, “Graveyard Quest”, and the meme “This is Fine”. He's currently doing a gag strip for King Features and looking at old sketchbooks to find out where the problem first started. Discussed this week: making memes, my Mermaid Confections Glass, everything is a meme, 15 to 20 years doing weed, grav bongs and weed soda, decarboxylation, Ben and Jerry's Half-Baked, reliably chunky ice cream, chocolate milk, Cheeze Itz and milk, ice cream and pickles, bread and butter pickles, Rocky Road, Graveyard Quest, Doink, Young King Dave, the song Rascal, smoking big boys in Amish country, Star Trek The Next Generation, the "This is fine" dog, back problems as a cartoonist, Indica anxiety, CBD, pinene, a Ween concert. Tulsa, Oklahoma, frozen banana pipes, Grepe Ape, Calvin and Hobbes, Get Fuzzy, Back, Anthony Clark, Gun Show, Dickbutt, Awkward Zombie, Horribleville, the death of the author, the whale, Moby Dick, starting being the hardest part, John Cleese, getting into a mode of play, cartooning versus animating, the SAG-AFTERA strike, the Wilhelm scream, art theft, AI as a tool, smoking the whole pack, reading as homework, and more! Over about three years, King Features Syndicate TV brought brand new Popeye cartoons to the television market to compete with the syndication of the Paramount theatrical shorts. Two hundred and twenty of these were made in that span of time, featuring work from creators like Jack Kinney, Gene Deitch and Lou Scheimer. There's truly no other Popeye media quite like these, folks; these wild, freewheeling and often bizarre creations are an experience worth talking about! So we did!

Say you're in a band, and you're struggling to get your songs performed because the self-appointed leader is a narcissistic arsehole. Then along comes an aging mega rock star who offers you a gig to sing for him so he can summon a demon from another dimension... It's a common showbiz tale.... Welcome to episode 89 of See Hear. Tim, Bernie and Maurice sit at the virtual round table to talk about the 1983 animated feature Rock & Rule developed by Canadian animation house, Nelvana (later known for The Care Bears Movie). The film is set in a dystopian future where earth's occupants are animals mutated into humans (because ya know....anthropomorphic animals in cartoons....) The one thing that hasn't changed is that band in fighting still exists and aging rock stars still have massive egos. We talk about the history of Nelvana, Faustian tales (of which this isn't quite one), King Features, animation for adults vs animation for kids, major studio interference, and the soundtrack of this film featuring Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Earth Wind and Fire. EDITOR'S NOTE: This is Angela's final column. Dear Readers: Over a decade ago, I was given the wonderful opportunity to work King Features Weekly Service to create The Kitchen Diva! food and lifestyle column. Editor Jim Clarke helped me to craft 800 words, including a recipe, into a user-friendly and, hopefully, entertaining format each week, year in and year out. This is my last column for King Features, and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Jim for being such an extraordinary editor, the King Features Weekly Service staff and all of you for your interest and support of...Article Link
Every since we started this website and the X-Band: The Phantom Podcast one of the most common questions we have received is when will we get to hear from someone from King Features and or Hearst? It has always been a goal for us as we ourselves had a million and one questions that we wanted to ask. After 200 podcasts we got the chance and while we did not get to ask them all, we spent 90 minutes racing through as many questions as possible. A huge thanks must go to Tea Fougner who is the comics editor for the Phantom plus 60 other comic titles. She was great in answering as many questions as possible and some were not easy to answer. A brief list of the questions we asked in no particular order are:What is the approval process of new stories from Tony DePaul, Egmont and Frew Publishers? Is there a Phantom bible? Will we ever see a new Phantom TV Show and or Movie? The process from KFS point of view of the Matt Kyme and Shane Foley "Diana and the Heartbreakers Gang" story in Frew #1892.The Phantom and cross over stories with The Raven, Sir Falcon, Flash Gordon, Defenders of the Earth etcMoonstone verses Dynamite Entertainment. What is the target audience of the Phantom?Targeting the next generation. The 100th Anniversary of The Phantom. It must be noted that she did choose not to answer one question but you will have to listen and or watch the podcast to find out which one.She also went over the history of King Features and Hearst and how they relate to our hero, the Phantom. As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. If you love classic Lee Falk, Wilson McCoy and Ray Moore, this is a must listen (or watch) Podcast as we chat with two Australian creators whose work is heavily influenced by their legendary work.Frew #1892 was released May 6 2021 and features the second Phantom story by Matt Kyme. His first Phantom story was solely created by him. For this second story Shane Foley was brought in by Frew Publications to ink and enhance the original art.If you are wondering why Shane was brought on to this story you simply have to listen and or watch to this podcast. We chat to both creators and listen to the story on how this story was originally rejected by King Features. We then learn of the lengths Frew, Matt and Shane went through to ensure the story was published and enjoyed by us phans. The podcast is close to two hours long and you may be wondering what we discussed for two hours? Along with the dissection of the "Diana and the Heartbreakers Gang" story in great detail we chat about Wilson McCoy and Ray Moore classic stories. Again if you love those stories, you need to listen to this podcast. If your watching, Shane shows his original artwork and we compare many panels that are influenced directly by McCoy and Moore. As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. If you want to see a bunch of powerful comic book superheroes team up to fend off extraterrestrial threats to our home planet, there's no better place to look than Marvel's Avengers Defenders of the Earth! This 1986 animated series from King Features, with development by Marvel and production from a trio of overseas studios including Toei Animation, united the bigger-than-life heroes of King Features Syndicate. Flash Gordon, Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar joined forces to defend Earth (hence the name) from the villainous intents of Ming the Merciless. Helping to fight back for the fate of their planet were the second generation of heroes, including Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker, the adopted son Kshin and his space-alien pet Zuffy, and Lothar "L.J." Junior. While these characters might not be the first that come to mind when thinking about comic book superheroes, they're definitely classics for a reason. We're coming up on their 100th anniversary -- a pretty monumental task for any character, really -- so what better way to celebrate than by watching Defenders of the Earth? Unfortunately, some of the backwards tropes -- racist, misogynist, every other -ist -- is part of the package here. Is it bad enough to dip, or just enough to force us into tough conversations? We welcome back Ashly Hutchens, my good friend, and my personal tattoo artist. We actually did this in her shop and I got a tattoo while doing the interview. You will hear the hum of the gun and the music she plays. It was a great time and yes I will include a picture of the final work. Welcome back friends, Welcome to KDOI Podcasting Kimo’s Den of Iniquity where we create more than we consume, I am your head instigator Timothy Kimo Brien. This episode will focus on craft. Out of all the subjects this season, this is probably the one that is the most tangible. We can put our hands or witness craft in action. Maybe that is why it is the easiest to talk about, perhaps it is the hardest. Our friends over at Merriam Webster define craft as skill in planning or executing; dexterity, occupation or trade requiring manual dexterity or artistic skill, skill in deceiving to gain an end, members of a trade union, to make or produce with care, skill or ingenuity. Our two quotes come from Gene Fowler “Writing Is easy. You only need to stare at a blank piece of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead,” and Stephen King “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” Gene Fowler was a writer with the Denver Post and a syndication manager of King Features. His later work included over a dozen screenplays, mostly written in the ’30s and a number of books including biographies and memoirs. Stephen King author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy. His books have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television series, and comic books. King has published 58 novels, including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman, and six non-fiction books. He has written around 200 short stories, most of which have been published in book collections. Why craft? This is the most concrete topic for me yet it is also a bit nebulous. Some people can fake craft with shortcuts or YouTube videos. Craft takes study, craft takes doing craft takes failure and picking yourself up and pushing forward. Craft takes vision and research about where you want to go and what you want to incorporate in your work. The two quotes I chose really speak to me about the hard work that comes with being artistic. This stuff doesn’t just drop in our lap, we aren’t waiting for some invisible friend in the sky to do it for us or give us a clue about how to complete something or overcome a barrier, craft is the action of getting up when you are sick and blowing chunks, getting into your space and making something happen when it is the last thing in the world you want to do. Craft separates the wheat from the chaff, it isn’t meant to handcuff us, it is to help us push through whatever blockages we may have that prevent us from being our natural creative selves. Let’s get this conversation going. If you want to be part of the conversation we have 11 topics and we send you the definition and the quotes, feel free to jump off there or go your own way. Email us at kdoipodcasting@gmail.com Twitter and IG @KDOIPodcasting We are looking at creating more than we consume with you.

Popeye does impressions, Olive flirts with Steve, a number of characters eat a lot of food, and a Dagwood sandwich saves the day! It might not get any weirder than this.

Democracy Now!: Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America (Simon & Schuster) From the standoff at Standing Rock over the Dakota Access Pipeline, to the voices of grassroots leaders; from Black Lives Matter activists to the stories of those fighting for peace, climate justice, migrant rights, and LGBTQ equality; from uncovering government surveillance to fighting attacks on freedom of the press, Democracy Now! has been reporting for two decades from the front lines of the movements that are changing America and changing the world. In these times of war and elections, movements and uprisings, we need independent media more than ever. The commercial media serves as a mouthpiece for corporate and government interests--giving a platform to the pundits and the pollsters who know so little about so much, explaining the world to us and getting it so wrong. Free speech is democracy’s last line of defense. We must demand it, defend it, and most of all, use it--now. Amy Goodman is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now! a daily, global grassroots news hour, broadcasting on over 1,400 public television and radio stations around the U.S. and the world, with millions accessing it online at democracynow.org. An acclaimed international journalist, she has won the Right Livelihood Award, widely known as the Alternative Nobel Prize. Goodman is also the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from Harvard’s Nieman Foundation of Journalism, the George Polk Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting, and the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award. This is her sixth New York Times bestselling book. Denis Moynihan has been working with Democracy Now! since 2000. He is a bestselling author and a King Features syndicated columnist. He lives in Colorado, where he founded community radio station KFFR.
Pauline Frommer is the Co-President, with her father Arthur Frommer, of Frommer Media LLC, publisher of the iconic Frommer guidebooks and Frommers.com. Pauline hosts a nationally syndicated radio show on travel, and writes an internationally syndicated newspaper column for King Features. As John Lennon would have said, Merry Krimble. It’s December 2016, and the See Hear podcast celebrates its third anniversary with a fireside chat about an iconic piece of animation. Tim, Bernie and Maurice are joined by host of the Macca-dedicated podcast Paul Or Nothing, Sam Whiles (who was also the co-host of the Down In The Hole podcast dedicated to Tom Waits). They chat about the 1968 full length animated feature, Yellow Submarine, a nautical fantasy about some obscure pop group called The Beatles (YAY) travelling in the titular transport to rid an idyllic land of music-hating villains (BOO). The film was not only successful in its day, but went on to influence a bunch of other storytellers and animators (we’re sure Terry Gilliam was one). It was an engaging conversation, not least of which because there was not a common consensus on the merits of the film. Who said what? Tune in and find out before the Blue Meanies put the Apple Bonkers onto you. Many thanks to Sam for taking the time to join us and even put on a Paul McCartney impersonation for the crew’s amusement at one point. We’d like to thank anyone who listened to us over the year. We will continue to present shows to you through 2017…you have been warned. Also, please consider giving a listen to the companion episode to this one. Maurice interviews Mitch Axelrod (Fab 4 Free 4 All podcast) about the King Features cartoon series dedicated to the fab four. Hey there See Hear listeners, We have two episodes of the show being released this week. Episode 36 will concentrate on a discussion of the full length 1968 Beatles animated feature, Yellow Submarine. Today, however, to complement that episode, we present to you an interview Maurice had with author of the book “Beatletoons”, Mitch Axelrod. There are hundreds of Beatles related books covering music analysis, biographies, their professional day to day diary, tours, gossip and even description of what equipment they used (specific amplifiers, guitars, drumkits, etc). Mitch has written the only book about the creation and background behind the very successful weekly King Features cartoon TV show devoted to the Beatles. Mitch was very happy to talk about how the cartoons came about, how the animated figures actually moved like their real-life counterparts, (but their voices sounded nothing like the real thing), why the cartoons are never likely to be officially released by Apple on DVD, and sixties cartoons in general. He’s a knowledgeable and funny guest, and it was See Hear’s huge honour to have him on the show. Don’t forget to look for Episode 36 in a few days. Today's Guest: "Zippy the Pinhead" cartoonist Bill Griffith, who reveals his late mother's sordid history in Invisible Ink: My Mother's Secret Love Affair with a Famous Cartoonist!!, a graphic novel. Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Bill Griffith by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of cartoon characters who want to break through from 2D to 3D… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! (Tech Note from Mr. Media: For some stupid reason, my audio during this interview is engulfed in static; I don't know why. The good news is that my guest, Bill Griffith, sounds and looks great. I apologize for the sound difficulties in advance.) Cartoonist Bill Griffith has always shared bits and pieces of his life, his world view – and maybe even a neurosis or two – through his personal window on the soul, Zippy the Pinhead. In fact, as regular readers know, Griffith – as “Griffy” – often plays sidekick to Zippy in the long-running daily comic strip. But in his latest work, Griffith takes readers deeper into his real life than ever before. His subject matter? Mom. BILL GRIFFITH podcast excerpt: "My mother read my work from the very beginning. It caused her quite a bit of discomfort. There's a point in the book where I quote from a letter she wrote to me in the early '70s where she says, 'Tell me, Dear Son, how do I tell my friends about your work, since it's often X-rated and pornographic? What do I say to them when they say, "Your son draws dirty pictures!"' She literally wanted me to advise her." You can LISTEN to this interview with ZIPPY THE PINHEAD cartoonist BILL GRIFFITH, author of the graphic novel INVISIBLE INK: My Mother's Secret Love Affair with a Famous Cartoonist!!, by clicking the audio player above! It seems that Barbara Jackson Griffith led a most interesting life outside of her marriage, carrying on a years-long affair with her employer, a married man who was well known in the industry that Barbara’s son would eventually become an American master of: cartooning. In Invisible Ink: My Mother’s Secret Love Affair with a Famous Cartoonist!!, Griffith takes us from his moment of discovery through the amateur sleuthing that revealed ever greater details of his late mother’s most profound secret. Reading Invisible Ink, you’ll be hard pressed not to laugh, drop your jaw, and occasionally squirm uncomfortably as a legendary cartoonist draws scenes of his own mother in bed with a not-so-legendary cartoonist of an earlier era. BILL GRIFFITH podcast excerpt: "The first Zippy strip was in 1970... He will eventually be in the grave with me. I made a deal in my contract with King Features that when I go, Zippy goes. There is no next-in-line cartoonist waiting to do Zippy." The book has already achieved a mainstream acceptance that has often eluded Griffith; Entertainment Weekly’s website, for example, proudly offers a sneak peak at several pages. NPR and the Toronto Globe and Mail reviewed the book. And Françoise Mouly – wife of Maus cartoonist Art Spiegelman – together with Mina Kaneko interviewed Griffith for The New Yorker. Bill Griffith has a history with Mr. Media that goes back to the mid-1990s when this was a syndicated newspaper column. He most recently joined us in 2012 to talk in depth about Zippy. Key interview moments: • 8:15 Ever wonder how an adult-oriented artist such as Bill Griffith explained their work to Mom? Or how Mom, full of pride, explains it to the neighbors?; • 25:00 Griffith explains a bit about what his mother's lover, artist Lawrence Lariar contributed to the early days of comic books, comic strips, commercial art and mystery novels, and how he inadvertently had an impact on Griffith himself; • 38:50 Griffith reveals the future of his 50-yearold daily comic strip,
On this episode of the interview series, Andy and Derek are happy to have as their guest Dean Mullaney, the editor of IDW's the Library of American Comics and the EuroComics series. His most recent book, The King of the Comics: One Hundred Years of King Features Syndicate will be coming out next month, just in time for the world-famous syndicate's centennial. Dean talks with the Two Guys about the process of gathering strips, his experiences digging through library archives, the importance of working with collectors and enthusiasts, and the challenges of culling the most representative selections for each of his volumes. His new King Features project is no exception, and in fact, Dean describes it as one of his most ambitious, and satisfying, collections to date. Coming in at over 300 pages, the book covers the entire history of the syndicate, even touching upon the early days of William Randolph Hearst's newspapers. Derek and Andy also talk with Dean about a couple of his other recent works, Bravo for Adventure, Alex Toth's magnum opus that has been collected in book form for the first time, and the second release in EuroComics' definitive English-language editions of Hugo Pratt's landmark series, Corto Maltese: Beyond the Windy Isles. Both speak to Mullaney's passion for classic comics as well as his expertise as an editor/curator. Along the way, the guys also discuss Dean's award-winning Genius Alex Toth series, the edited Terry and the Pirates volumes, and his seminal work at Eclipse Comics. This is a must-listen episode for anyone interested in comics strips, comics history, and comics preservation.
While at this year's Small Press Expo, Derek had the opportunity to talk with the great Bill Griffith, whose new book from Fantagraphics, Invisible Ink: My Mother's Secret Love Affair with a Famous Cartoonist, debuted at the event and will soon be available in stores everywhere. As the subtitle suggests, this is a different kind of book for Griffith, a radical departure from his syndicated Zippy strip. Not only is it a deeply personal and moving memoir, but it's his first long-form work in comics. It is a narrative of his mother's sixteen-year love affair with a prolific and recognizable cartoonist of the of the 1950s and 1960s. But even more than that, it's Bill's own story about the discover of his mother's hidden secret -- he learned about the affair in 1972, right after the death of his father -- and his ongoing attempts to undercover the details and understand the dynamics of a family life now long behind him. Indeed, Invisible Ink can be read as a detective narrative, with its autobiographic protagonist visiting aged relatives, investigating long-forgotten documents, and putting together the pieces of his parents' lives that may never render a complete picture. Perhaps most notable, Invisible Ink is a book about family and memory. Time itself stands as a central focus of the text, with Griffith juxtaposing past and present events in a very fluid and psychologically revealing manner. Dreams and fantasies become tangible. Reminiscences define current reality. In all, it is a narrative that is Faulknerian in scope. In his interview with Derek, Griffith discusses the circumstances surrounding Invisible Ink and the history of its gestation. But the conversation doesn't end with the new book. The two also discuss Bill's time in underground comix, his world-famous Zippy the Pinhead, the unlikely backstory of Zippy's syndication with King Features, and the eventual winding down of the strip's current Dingburg run (which began in 2007). Equal parts history, insights, and laughter, Derek's interview with Bill Griffith was perhaps the highlight of his time at SPX 2015. Yow!
