In this "Industry Dive" episode, Chris Gehringer, a Senior Mastering Engineer & Partner at Sterling Sound joins me for an in-depth discussion on the state of mastering & the loudness wars in modern music. Chris has mastered countless albums over the decades, such as: Wu-Tang Clan's “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” & Naughty By Nature's 1991 self titled album, along with modern chart toppers such as Rhianna, Lady Gaga & Dua Lipa. Chris' work has also received 20 Grammy nominations (and counting). In the episode, we talk about: the evolution of music mastering; where the loudness war stands in 2025; how brickwalling hinders the mastering process; if there will ever be an industry shift towards "louder doesn't mean better;" Eric Bass of Shinedown's experiences with Sterling Sound's Ted Jensen & how Eric prefers a more dynamic master of their music; how Chris was involved with the interludes featured on Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers);" the loudness / brickwalling controversy surrounding Metallica's "Death Magnetic;" how Dolby Atmos & AI might factor into the future of mastering & so much more! Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode!  Theme music is "Unveiled" by The 4th. “If this is their 9th studio album, where does it rank?”  DEATH MAGNETIC, the Rick Rubin produced 9th studio album from Bay Area metal titans METALLICA (and the first studio album featuring Robert Trujillo on bass) is chock full of riffs, tons of ugly chords, a boatload of guitar solos, and loads of twin guitar harmonies that harken back to the thrash metal veterans legendary 80's output, with a sound that is a true return to their original thrash form which could have easily placed this album being released right after …AJFA.  They brought back all of the classic elements (including their iconic logo!) that made METALLICA awesome to begin with and more than made up for their “Angry Loads” era.  Remember to always send back the “medium rare chicken tenders” and if you're using a ride share, make sure to be hammered on at least one part of the journey. JOIN US for a brief review of a recent local metal show featuring Atlanta's own Embering Effigy at Sweetwater Live in Duluth (as well as a summary of the “aftermath” that followed), remember that “the Loads of Anger” are always at the bottom, and behold the victors of “The Loudness Wars” with METALLICA's 2008 return to their thrash metal roots, DEATH MAGNETIC.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. Episode 141: In Conversation with Kurt Larson of Information Society Many people these days talk about having a yearly "bingo card" and in particular, what events they didn't have on their cards. Well, Brian and Sarah definitely didn't have "talking with the lead singer of Information Society" on their 2022 bingo card-- or any other year's card, for that matter! But it has, in fact, happened, and both Brian and Sarah are absolutely thrilled to bring you this special episode! Our hosts talked about Information Society's 1988 self-titled album over the course of two episodes back in July 2018. In this episode, they get to talk with Kurt himself about the making of the album, its release and reception, the music videos, and even get some answers to questions they posed aloud way back then. However, the conversation covers a great deal more than just that album. Kurt tells stories ranging from the band's very early days all the way up to the recording and release of their latest album, 2021's ODDfellows. And as cool as all of that sounds, there's even more to learn, as Brian and Sarah discovered from talking with Kurt. He explained the origins of digital sampling, the history of remixing, what record pulls are, and what Spatial Audio is. Kurt also shares his thoughts on Cleopatra Records as well as answering the question of whether streaming services ended the Loudness Wars. And there are plenty of non-music topics discussed as well! The three of them talk about work habits during lockdown, and Kurt shares stories about playing the first video games as well as the time he met Leonard Nimoy! (You knew there had to be Star Trek talk in here somewhere!) And, due to Brian putting his foot in his mouth by talking trash about 1970's muscle cars, Kurt shared a number of photos of the Plymouth he altered to look like a car from "Mad Max," which then featured in the 1990 video for "Think." Below is an advertisement for a car similar to Kurt's (or at least how Kurt's started off looking). He tells the story of what he did to alter the car and how the one in the ad below is for a 1971 model, but Kurt's car is from model year 1973.  Here's another picture of Kurt's highly customized Plymouth Sebring: The picture below elicits a rather shocked response from Brian and Sarah during the episode, as Kurt shows how close the film's promotional poster is to the photo he took back in 1990. It should be obvious by now that this episode is overflowing with entertaining and insightful conversation-- so what are you waiting for-- start listening immediately! In this episode of the SonicScoop podcast LIVE from MixCon, Justin Colletti is joined by three brilliant panelists for a look at how music production is changing right now, and where the field is headed next. First, Jonathan Bailey of iZotope tells us about the emergence of artificial intelligence and machine learning in music production. Are you going to lose your job to a robot composer, performer mix or mastering engineer? Or are they here to help you do more and better work than ever? Then, you won't want to miss Alan Silverman's full presentation on the current and future state of loudness in music making, as he describes how streaming services have taken us "through the looking glass" into an upside-down world where loud has become quiet, quiet has become loud—and the way we make records will never be the same again. Finally, Marta Gospodarek tells us all about the state of the art in "spatial audio", from binaural music productions to 360 recording formats to the cutting edge of "object based" surround sound and more. Thanks to iZotope for sponsoring this presentation and podcast at MixCon and to Soundtoys and Eventide for Sponsoring this podcast episode.

Are you confused about what mastering really is?  Are you tempted to skip this important step in the process of preparing your music for distribution?  Aaron Sefchick and Joe McMurray bring in the esteemed Chris Graham of Chris Graham Mastering and the Six Figure Home Studio Podcast to talk about the final polish in the process of preparing your music for release.  According to Chris, mastering is "optimizing a music track for goosebumps for the most people on the maximum number of listening devices." Chris tells the guys his story of how he became a musician, started producing music, and fell in love with mastering.  When he started his mastering business, he had the idea to put raw vs. mastered samples on his website and provide free mastering samples to new potential clients. The guys talk about business books including The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris.  Then they discuss the podcasting world, how podcasts are making it possible for niche shows to thrive, and how podcasts provide people with the opportunity to better themselves by learning while they drive or perform other life-tasks.  Then they dive into the topic of higher education and whether it pays off. Aaron and Joe get to ask Chris lots of questions about mastering.  Chris tells them that it involves compression, equalization, limiting, and much more in order to make the tracks sound consistently better, more cohesive (on an album), and often louder on as many different listening devices as possible.  The guys ask Chris about his thoughts on having your tracks mixed and mastered by the same person.  Chris recommends doing a "mastering contest," in which you go to multiple different mastering engineers and ask for a free mastered song from each.  Then compare the tracks and choose your favorite. Finally, Chris, Aaron, and Joe talk about the "Loudness Wars." Since digital music became popular, audio engineers have been pushing the idea that louder is better. Unfortunately, that just isn’t true. As music gets louder, fine details within the music become undetectable, and the experience is ruined.  This all came to a head in 2008 when the game Guitar Hero had to remix some tracks for the game. Most notably, was Metallica’s Death Magnetic and suddenly, the music sounded better. Since then, it seems the loudness was have come to an end, but we wanted to take a moment to remember this fascinating sonic phenomenon...and pray it never returns. Holy Gain Stage, Batman! It's been a busy month at Studio C Creative Sound! (The official Batcave of the Voice Recording Bootcamp in San Diego CA) We've been doing lots of podcasts in both audio and video formats, managing voice over classes with some of our favorite voice over instructors in Southern California, and working on our passion projects. We take another look at what it takes to record your voice over work, and offer some creative ideas for using your mad skills and gear to make an income. Our former student Cheryl had a project dropped in her lap and wasn't quite sure how to handle the lack of budget. What to do? Well, if it's a fun project (and you're pretty sure you're not just getting worked by the client), see it as an opportunity to make friends and contacts that will further your career.  We chat/rant about the history of the Loudness Wars, and how we got here. And show you all about RMS and LUFS, which you definitely want to understand if you're getting in to any type of streaming or podcasting work. It's a little nerdy, but we've kept it painless. And a cool little FREE plug-in to make sure you're sending the right levels to your client, like Amazon ACX or podcast hosting service. https://youlean.co/youlean-loudness-meter/ Plus, a little Easter Egg for you if you listen to the end. Enjoy! Produced at Studio C Creative Sound Recorders in San Diego CA
