EPISODE 129 -  “FRANK LOVEJOY: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 3/02/2026  I think many people know that one of our favorite films is In a Lonely Place (1950). Directed by NICHOLAS RAY, this film noir is the tragic story of a love affair unraveling at the hands of doubt and distrust. It stars HUMPHREY BOGART and GLORIA GRAHAME in roles that would be career-defining. However, adding quiet strength to the film is FRANK LOVEJOY, who played Brub Nicolai, Bogart's ex-army buddy turned private investigator. In the film, Lovejoy is not flashy, nor does he attempt to steal scenes, but he is so solid, so decent — he becomes the moral compass and Greek Chorus that helps define the narrative. What was so wonderful about Lovejoy was just how ordinary he was. He was Everyman. Square-jawed, no-nonsense, he looked like your Dad, or your uncle, or your local butcher. He wouldn't stand out in a crowd, but he brought such humanity and decency to every role he performed. You may not know his name, but you certainly know his face. So this week, we are going to dive into the life and career of FRANK LOVEJOY, an unsung hero of classic cinema, and our Star of the Month SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IBDB.com; IMDBPro.com; Movies Mentioned: Black Bart (1948), starring Yvonne DeCarlo & Dan Duryea; Home of the Brave (1949), starring James Edwards & Lloyd Bridges; In A Lonely Place (1950), starring Humphrey Bogart & Gloria Grahame; South Sea Sinner (1950), starring MacDonald Carey & Shelley Winters; Three Secrets (1950), starring Eleanor Parker, Patricia Neal, and Ruth Roman; Breakthrough (1950), starring John Agar & David Brian;  The Sound of Fury (1950), starring Frank Lovejoy, Kathleen Ryan, & Richard Carlson' Goodbye My Fancy (1951), starring Joan Crawford & Robert Young; Force of Arms (1951), starring Wiliam Holden & Nancy Olson; I'll See You In My Dreams (1951), starring Doris Day & Danny Thomas; Starlift (1951), starring Gary Cooper & Doris Day; I Was A Communist For The FBI (1951), starring Frank Lovejoy & Dorothy Hart; Retreat, Hell! Part 2 - A Joyful Shout In Psalms 5:1–4, 11–12, David shows us that joy begins in prayer and ends in praise. He starts his morning crying out to God and finishes with a shout of confidence. True joy is not based on circumstances but on trust in God's character, protection, and favor. When we remember that the Lord hears us, defends us, and surrounds us like a shield, our trust turns into a joyful shout.

In Galatians 5:22, Paul writes, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love…”   Love is listed first because it is foundational. Joy and peace flow from it. When the Spirit produces love in us, it changes how we see people.   The First Principle of God's Love: Seeing others through the eyes of love.   Our lives are shaped by those who loved us — and those who refused to love us. The way we were loved influences how we love, and God's unconditional is an example of how we are to love others.

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn do the time warp with “The Thirty-Second of December” (1958), a clever and unsettling episode from the legendary Suspense series.Starring Frank Lovejoy as Joe, the story leans heavily on Lovejoy's everyman intensity. Drowning in gambling debt, Joe makes a disastrous choice: he pawns his fiancée Molly's engagement ring… then impulsively spends the money on a strange watch from a deeply unsettling pawnshop owner, played to perfection by Barney Phillips. Things go rapidly downhill when Joe discovers the watch can control time—and decides to use it to rob a bank. The robbery succeeds. The debt is gone. But Molly is gone and Joe still hasn't learned his lesson at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Mary and Greg unpack the episode's dark irony, its cautionary take on shortcuts and second chances. A morality tale with a supernatural sting— The 32nd of December is quietly cruel.Thank you for listening! If you like the show, please share us with your friends and family AND give us a review! We talk about cinema as a political tool, how film factories became part of war efforts, how science and technology were turned into spectacle, and why moving images have played such a powerful role in shaping how we understand conflict. If you're interested in film history, media power, propaganda, or the hidden stories behind wartime cinema, this conversation will change the way you watch movies.

Deirdre Lovejoy Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Deirdre Lovejoy (DD). In this episode, we chat about her growing up in Indiana, and what made her mom tell her to get into acting. Next, we talk about an insane freak accident that almost took her whole hand off! Naturally I ask her about moving to Brookly after having lived in Manhattan for so long. We touch on her stint on the television show 'Bones', as well as her arc on 'The Blacklist'. Then we dive into one of my all-time favorite shows, 'Raising Dion'. I love this show, so I geek out a little, before we talk about her getting cast in the greatest show of all time, 'The Wire'. Then, we talk about a super rare condition that DD was later diagnosed with, following some really scary events (Stress Related Seizure Disorder). Deirdre shares with me the details of the play she is writing about some of her traumatic experiences (Trauma Nova), and how she plans to put the show on at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in Scotland. We also discuss her other play (Bird Elephant China), which chronicled some unrelated traumatic events. Finally, we end talking about her love for NBA basketball, and her beloved New York Knicks. You can catch DD on the previously mentioned shows, as well as the upcoming seasons of 'Daredevil Born Again', and Diarra From Detroit.

Pastor Rob explores the first two fruits of the Spirit - love and joy - as divine attributes that transcend human capability. Drawing from Galatians 5:22-24, he illuminates how agape love - God's selfless, unconditional love - forms the foundation for all other spiritual fruits, while true joy emerges as a deep, abiding inner rejoicing that surpasses mere happiness. Drawing on biblical insights, Pastor Rob challenges common misconceptions, emphasizing that these fruits aren't mere character improvements but supernatural endowments given through the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. He particularly emphasizes how these divine qualities serve as powerful witnesses both within the church and to a watching world, noting that "this world desperately needs the love of God." The message concludes with a call to action: believers must actively walk in the Spirit through prayer, worship, and obedience to manifest these transformative fruits, removing obstacles and remaining connected to the divine source - for apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Sharon and Ginny explore why the garden remains one of the most powerful places to raise a child and a parent. From babies whose tiny hands brush over mint leaves to 96-year-olds planting their very first sunflower house, Sharon shows that it is never too late to begin. Her timeless books like Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots, Camp Granny, Sunflower Houses have introduced generations to the simple miracles of seeds, soil, and slowing down. This episode is a reminder that you don't need expertise or acres of land; you just need a pot or two and some seeds to nurture. Together, Sharon and Ginny share some reasons gardening changes families: it pulls children away from screens, fills them with curiosity, and gives them a world of textures, tastes, and small adventures—zinnias buzzing with life, lamb's ear soft as felt, corn that comes in stunning colors, birdhouse gourds that become toys, and tiny discoveries waiting under every leaf. Sharon explains how a garden becomes a child's first classroom, a parent's pause button, and a generational legacy that ripples outward—just as her own grandmother's influence shaped thousands of families around the world. If you've ever wished for a slower, richer, more connected childhood for your kids or for yourself this conversation will give you the courage, inspiration, and practical starting points to begin today. The history of film calls to mind unforgettable photographs, famous directors, and the glitz and hustle of the media business. But there is another tale to tell that connects film as a material to the twentieth century's history of war, destruction, and cruelty. This story comes into focus during World War II at the factories of Tennessee Eastman, where photographic giant Kodak produced the rudiments of movie magic. Not far away, at Oak Ridge, Kodak was also enriching uranium for the Manhattan Project--uranium mined in the Belgian Congo and destined for the bomb that fell on Hiroshima. While the world's largest film manufacturer transformed into a formidable military contractor, across the ocean its competitor Agfa grew entangled with Nazi Germany's machinery of war. After 1945, Kodak's film factories stood at the front lines of a new, colder war, as their photosensitive products became harbingers of the dangers of nuclear fallout. Following scientists, soldiers, prisoners, and spies through Kodak's and Agfa's global empires, Alice Lovejoy links the golden age of cinema and photography to colonialism, the military-industrial complex, radioactive dust, and toxic waste. Revelatory and chilling, Tales of Militant Chemistry shows how film became a weapon whose chemistry irrevocably shaped the world we live in today. Alice Lovejoy is author of the award-winning Army Film and the Avant Garde: Cinema and Experiment in the Czechoslovak Military. A former editor at Film Comment, she is Professor of film and media studies at the University of Minnesota. Caleb Zakarin is editor of the New Books Network. Learn more about your ad choices. At the dawn of the twentieth-century, major advances in science and technology brought incredible change to the field of medicine, enhancing and extending the lives of millions. Yet at the same time, a lax regulations and minimal oversight made it possible for countless medical grifters to get rich offering quack medical solutions to everything from whooping cough to cancer, sometimes at the expense of their patient's lives. When Linda Hazzard opened her sanitarium, the Institute of Natural Therapeutics at Wilderness Heights, in Olalla, Washington in the first decade of the 1900s, she claimed her rigid fasting and elimination approach to dieting was a miracle cure for a variety of illnesses, both trivial and serious. For years, Hazzard operated what amounted to a health retreat for the wealthy, without any oversight from the state or federal agencies. In the end, Hazzard's starvation cure resulted in the deaths of over a dozen people and her arrest and trial for manslaughter, but through all of it, she maintained it was a viable treatment—standing by her methods up until they ended her own life.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesHines, Terrence. 1997.
