On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Senior Editor Phil Keren speaks with Jennifer Bermingham, Director of Golf Programming for Invited, and a PGA/LPGA member. June is Women's Golf Month. Invited, the leading owner-operator of private golf and country clubs, and city clubs in North America, has partnered with the LPGA Foundation to celebrate Women's Golf Month. Invited has launched numerous women's golf programs at 120 of its clubs in North America. Bermingham discusses the programs that Invited and the LPGA offer to bring more women to golf. The golf boom during the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to many positive trends in the game, including the fact that more women than ever are playing golf. Today, according to the 2024 National Golf Foundation report, females account for 26% of on-course participants – the highest proportion on record. Phil and Editor-In-Chief Rob Thomas also talked about large-scale projects happening at three different clubs around the country. Members of Great Hills Country Club in Austin, Texas recently approved a $22.3 million golf course and clubhouse enhancement project. This plan includes replacing the 50-year-old irrigation system and establishing a Task Force on Golf Course Sustainability and Playability to develop a long-term plan for the golf course. Greens, bunkers and the practice facility will be upgraded. Conceptual plans are also in place to create a quiet dining space, a casual family bistro, a new outdoor bar and a children's playscape area. Rob and Phil also highlighted plans for a $35 million renovation of the 46,000-sq.-ft. clubhouse at Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. The expansion will increase the clubhouse footprint by approximately 10,000 sq. ft. Glenmoor will build a new pro shop, expand its fitness center, add pickleball courts and include structural upgrades. This project is part of a broader trend at Glenmoor, such as a $4 million pool and patio remodel in 2019 and an $8 million golf course renovation, that included a new irrigation system and updated greens, in 2023. King's North at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) National closed earlier this month to begin a comprehensive, two-part, two-year renovation project. Phase one, which will focus entirely on the front nine, includes renovating and restoring the greens, and installing Capillary Concrete bunker liners throughout the layout.

Working on a Gut program...Why is Gut health important 10:02 - Questions about Fasting sam_bidmer asks: Is Intermittent fasting healthy? What is the best way to do it? Rhoop31 asks: A lot of discussions has been made about fasted cardio or training for the enthusiasts for fat loss. Is there a science to it? Colby.schreckengost asks: It seems intermittent fasting and cell repair are all the rage now. Do you believe that fasting is the best way to heal your body from chronic inflammation? I'm a chronic Lyme disease patient. I have a flare-up typically when the seasons change, but this summer has been tough due to the heat and humidity on the east coast. 25:12 - Questions about diets. emeraldrealtync asks: Thoughts on dairy? What do you think of the “starch diet”? emeraldrealtync asks: What's one of your best tips for longevity, happiness, and success when it comes to nutrition? 31:26 - Fiber… how much do we really need? Kellys_bootcamp asks: Suggestions for real food fiber. It can be a challenge to get 25 to 35 grams a day, especially for those who are less carb tolerant. 32:49 - Nutrition and Cancer eringlynn8 asks: What are your thoughts for nutrition post-cancer? I did keto for 2 years with great success, but my cholesterol went up so high my Dr. was overly concerned. (I did a calcium score and tested 0). The premise was to starve the cancer cells from sugar – make them ‘sick' and improve the effects of the treatments. Being on an estrogen blocker seems to really be affecting my weight loss efforts. Resource: Dom D'agostino - “Fasting and Ketosis.” 35:30 - Nutrition for when life gets busy. gwms12 asks: What are some solid habits/nutrition tips to embrace when life gets in the way and to help keep you from throwing hard work away? So many in natural sugars, that it seems a bowl of. Any combo wouldn't be so bad to have? mamarusher365 asks: Do women over 55 need an extra something in our nutritional plan, that we might be losing in our body when working out? I work out 7 days a week, whether bodyweight or weights. Main goals are healthy on the inside, strong on the outside. 41:54 - Nutrition for high school athletes Matthewsmithatc05 asks: How complex should nutrition be for high school athletes? 45:05 - Parents listen up...Special message for the kids from Todd and Robert. 47:52 - Nutritional Intake with Calorie Output jimmillerjrnflagent asks: For 13/14-year-old female soccer players: Suggested calorie intake and carb/protein/fat percentage? Some are doubling up on high school cross-country running or volleyball and then coming to our training session that runs 90 minutes. I am concerned they are not fueling properly for the output they are burning, and you know the high schools don't have a nutritionist on staff to help their athletes regulate. 52:10 - What is MCT Oil dianadeadlifts asks: What are the benefits of MCT Oil? Does the timing of creatine supplementation play a big role in how effectively your body will use it whether it's pre or post-exercise? 1:02:07 - Magnesium Benefits shooten1st asks: How should magnesium be taken as a supplement? Any naturally occurring sources of food? Lots of misinformation out there. I am diligently following her supplement protocol but am at a loss as to what to eat. I eat fruit, veggies, salmon, nuts, and now occasionally chicken and cut out all alcohol. On today's show, our trio gives you the lowdown on which five players they each expect to bounce back after a disappointing 2019 campaign. Will A.J. Green (8:15) return to being a pillar of consistency or will a significantly lower target share impair his value? Can David Montgomery (21:53) and the Bears' offense only go up after hitting rock-bottom last year, is Jordan Howard (40:46) primed to deliver a safe floor week-to-week, and was a low touchdown rate the only thing that prevented Aaron Rodgers (49:15) from being a top-five QB last season? We're back to give you our top 10 early fades heading into the 2020 season. Cleveland's run-heavy offense may cap Austin Hooper's (5:06) target load and Emmanuel Sanders (20:36) might lack the boom upside that fantasy owners may be seeking from him. Plus, playing in an offense that is set to regress isn't the only issue facing Austin Ekeler (40:26) and Cooper Kupp (58:11) could be a casualty of the Rams' scheme. There aren’t many 32-year-olds in any profession who have assumed the kind of leadership role that Stacy Lewis has in the world of professional golf. Not only by her 12 LPGA tournament wins so far, including two majors, or the fact that she was the first American woman in more than 20 years to win the LPGA Triple Crown — no, there’s more to it. Because a girl who grew up in a back brace, as she did, would not be a prime candidate to turn pro, let alone become number one in the world. She has stepped into controversy — less as a disruptor and more as a leader. She has inspired change and driven change. The companies she represents as a brand ambassador, such as KPMG, Marathon Petroleum, and now, Stephens, Inc., know to turn to her for much more than just club selection and putting tips. Key Takeaways: [:19] Ray Hoffman introduces the guest, Stacy Lewis. [1:15] Stacy has a degree in Finance and Accounting from the University of Arkansas. This is a good qualification for talking about the business of being a professional golfer. [1:28] Stacy had planned to get a regular job after school and not play professional golf. [1:40] Ray lists some of Stacy’s many college golf awards that pointed her toward success as a professional golfer. [1:54] Before college, academics was her focus. In the last couple of years of college, she started considering a professional golf path. [2:13] How does Stacy apply her finance and accounting knowledge? It feels like her own little business. She talks about hiring, firing, and payroll, and accounting. Her classes prepared her for it. She pays another person to do her taxes. [2:55] Stacy is CEO of Stacy Lewis. She runs her business on an Excel spreadsheet. [3:19] Professional golfers are independent contractors. Stacy explains what that means. No one else is making decisions for you. A lot of people are not prepared for that. There’s a lot of pressure to play well because you have a lot of people to pay before you get the money, especially if you have no sponsorships. [4:28] In college, Stacy did not know how much of a team she would need to employ as a professional golfer. She keeps her team really small. She wants people she trusts to tell her if she needs to change anything. She has a caddy, a swing coach, a trainer, an agent, a financial adviser, and an accountant. Plus her husband and her parents. [5:50] Stacy contrasts the PGA and LPGA purse payouts. Stacy does not ever see the purses being equal in the twenty or thirty years she has left in her career. She expects the gap to get smaller. For now, women are making about a third of what men make. Today, women can make a living out of playing professional golf, more than before. [7:23] Women tennis players have reached parity with men players. Venus Williams was a driver of that. It helped that men and women play at the same courts at the same time. It would take bringing the PGA and LPGA together to the same course to create change like that. The European Tour and the LPGA met at the Vic Open in Australia. It’s progress. [9:15] What would it take to make a joint PGA/LPGA tour? A lot of money is needed to make the two purses equal. [9:56] A smaller number of golfers from each organization would probably play, for a smaller purse. PGA players and audiences are sometimes surprised by the level of play in the LPGA. [10:38] LPGA play is more relatable for the average male amateur player who does not drive as far as a PGA player. There is more finesse to the women’s game and more feel in the wedges and putter. [11:10] Stacy would like to see a joint tournament at a Links course in Scotland, but it could be done anywhere. The biggest issue would be the course setup with tees. Links Golf is Stacy’s favorite style of golf. [12:11] Stacy had a drought from 2014 to 2017 where she didn’t win a single tournament. In 2017, when she won a $195K purse, she donated the check to Hurricane victims in Houston. The Tuesday before the tournament the thought came to her, and she called her husband to discuss it. He said, “Let’s go win the thing!” It gave her a focus. [13:04] Stacy is a fiery player, but that week she felt calm. She knew the outcome had already been decided and all she had to do was be there for it and enjoy it. It was a surreal week and a surreal experience. It’s been so cool for her to see the impact of that money, helping rebuild houses in Houston for eight families. [13:53] Stacy tells how the donation was made to the St. Bernard Project to distribute the money in Houston for Hurricane Harvey relief. [14:19] Last year, Stacy worked more on motherhood than on golfing. It has completely changed her world. It forces her to be more focused when she practices, and then get home to be with her daughter. Stay played a tournament in January, and her baby came with her, going to daycare while Stacy played. The LPGA Tour has daycare. [15:14] There were four or five babies born to LPGA golfers last year. One of them also will come to a summer tournament. After success on the golf course, Stacy was ready for the challenge of motherhood. She still feels she can play some pretty great golf, coming back from this, as well. [15:43] Stacy Lewis and Phil Mickelson are the principal faces of golf for KPMG. Stacy wears a blue hat, as for every blue hat KPMG sells, they donate five books to children in need as part of their campaign for literacy. [16:17] Written into each KPMG sponsorship contract are things like wearing the logo, which everyone sees, and service days. Stacy and her instructors spend a full day with about 25 women clients invited by KPMG for instruction, playing nine holes, a scramble for fun, and a time to network. Other sponsors may ask for different services. [17:04] There are five to six days a year that Stacy spends in service to KPMG and their clients for their sponsorship. There are also other meet-and-greets, social media posts, videos, and other things behind the scenes. Every sponsorship Stacy has requires at least a couple of service days, so they add up to quite a bit. [17:28] Stacy’s agent is concerned about her time. She cannot take on any more sponsors and have time to play 25 tournaments in a year. [17:50] Logo placement on shirts and hats determines how much they are seen on TV. The front of the hat is the number one location, then right chest, side of the hat, collar, and sleeve. The golf bag is low on the list. Camera angles are important. [18:29] Stacy’s clothing sponsor is Antigua. To start the year, they send her a big box of shirts and update them if needed in the summer. In the fall, they have a new line of colors and designs, so Stacy gets another big box. Antigua does a tremendous amount of work in women’s golf. Stacy has worn Antigua for eight years. [19:16] Stacy recently added Stephens, Inc. as a sponsor! Stephens has a soft spot for Razorback golfers like David Lingmerth and Stacy Lewis. Stacy was excited when Stephens Inc. reached out to her after she had seen the logo on the guys. [19:41] Over the years, Stacy learned that she represents her sponsors wherever she goes. She chooses sponsors that share her values and make sense for her. [20:19] Stacy has invited some of her sponsors to sponsor LPGA tournaments. She likes to push the envelope and increase the purses. Stacy pushed the idea both with KPMG and Marathon. [21:37] Stacy received a phone call from KPMG, her lead sponsor, that her contract would be paid in full during her maternity leave, without playing the full year. Stacy remembers the phone call which she received sitting in the parking lot of Wilshire Country Club in LA. At first, she thought something was wrong. The call left her in tears. [23:02] Most of Stacy’s other sponsors did the same thing, starting a trend. Stacy hopes the trend continues to support women having babies in the future. Lynne Doughtie, CEO of KPMG is passionate about women in the workplace speaking up for causes. She is amazing as one of the first women CEOs in her industry. [23:42] Stacy’s high profile as number one in the world helped create a major precedent in sponsorships. She says she likes to change things! We can always make things better. She even got the maternity policy on the LPGA Tour changed. She wants girls to see that they can have families and play professional golf. [24:24] The travel for the LPGA is harder than PGA travel, even in the last 10 years, with events in Australia, Asia, and Europe. As Stacy gets older, she won’t play as much internationally, with enough events in the U.S. to play a pretty full schedule. [24:57] Stacy has not played the Evian Championship for two years. She told them she would not return until they made changes. They have made changes to the design of the greens. The big change is putting it in July when it is dryer. Stacy is excited to get back there. She feels like it will be a better championship, this year. [26:40] Stacy takes leadership roles easily. It’s who she is. She’s the experienced voice on the tour. KPMG comes to Stacy after their tournament every year for her suggestions on what to do better next time. The LPGA Tour asks her the same questions. She continues to push the envelope. Some things may be out of reach but may work later. [27:44] What one person does Stacy see as someone she wants to emulate as she moves forward? Stacy looks toward Karrie Webb, who is an unbelievable advocate for women on and off the golf course. She does a lot to support Australian girls coming up in golf. [29:06] Stacy would love another dozen tour wins. She feels like she has a second start to her career after the baby. She asks, who knows what the second half has in store? [29:20] Stacy Lewis is a CEO, professional golfer, and leader. This is capitalism. Mentioned in This Episode: Stephens.com Stacy Lewis KPMG Marathon Petroleum University of Arkansas Arkansas All-American Golfer Stacy Lewis at University of Arkansas Dinah Shore Trophy Award Excel LPGA PGA Babe Zaharias Mickey Wright Ben Hogan Jimmy Demaret Venus Williams Vic Open European Tour Golf Links Golf Course St. Bernard Project Hurricane Relief LPGA Tour Daycare Phil Mickelson Antigua Clothing David Lingmerth Wilshire Country Club Lynne Doughtie Evian Championship Karrie Webb This Is Capitalism

Happy new year everyone! Hopefully you've had a good holiday and are ready to kick off your season right. Today I wanted to talk about the three most impactful episodes of the podcast and how you can use them to maximize your off-season. When most people think about the off-season their mind immediately goes to fitness. Mike and Kyle from super speed golf shared some incredible information about how to physically train for a more powerful swing. (Full episode here) I know a lot of people don't like going to the gym (frankly, neither do I!). The coolest thing about the workout technique Mike & Kyle have developed is that it A) draws on proven science used in other sports and B) doesn't require you to go to the gym and lift heavy things! They use a process called over speed training to help golfers build their swing speed. It borrows from a technique in baseball where pitchers use balls that are different weights to not only build their muscles, but to train their brain and body to throw faster. They have three weighted golf clubs, 2 lighter than a driver, 1 heavier, that you swing in order then finish with your actual driver. The brain science here is really cool. They've found that your brain will only let you swing the club as fast as you can safely STOP it. So by using the lighter clubs your brain learns that it actually swing fans stop faster. By swinging the heavier club your body gets used to moving a heavy more difficult object and when you switch back to your driver, the combination of the two lets you swing quicker. They've seen immediate gains of 5-7% swing speed just from the mental component. This has been so successful for them that they have several PGA & LPGA pros using them. Here's a video from twitter of Billy Horschel getting his work in with super speed golf! I even use super speed as part of my training. If you want to get your own you can get a 10% discount using our code: golfstrategy (all one word). As always I want to be totally transparent, I do receive an affiliate commission, but this is something that is a literal game changer, and it’s in my bag too! The second most impactful podcast is that of Greg Liberto, the Head Coach. I use a lot of the things that Greg share in my mental game coaching. There are some truly foundational things that are extremely easy to do but for whatever reason, we neglect them. The biggest in my opinion is to have a POSTgame routine. (Full episode) Greg’s big three questions are: Name 3 things that went well? Name 3 things that didn't go well? What's something you can do immediately to get better next time? The first question gets you to think positively about your game. Too many people neglect to do positive reflection about their abilities. This can be a huge step to building confidence! Question two gets into the self analysis part that people tend to either skip or not take seriously. This isn't something to get down on yourself about, rather use it to prepare for your next practice session. Question three gets us right to the point of what’s next on the agenda. Pick the low hanging fruit and get it fixed pronto! If you make this part of your golf routine you start to manage your time better and you get to the things that need fixing quicker. This will help you stack your success and become a better golfer. Our third impactful podcast is the first interview with George Roy who not only shared some awesome practice routines but also taught us an all time great lesson in how to set goals. (Full episode) George’s strategy is to not set a goal of a score, but rather a series of small achievements that will add up to that score. If we wanted to shoot 79 we wouldn’t try to go 40-39 because if we get off to a bad start we could get discouraged and shoot 95! On the flip side, if we were really setting the course on fire and went out in 35, it would be really easy to take our foot off the gas because we only need to shoot 44 on the back nine to meet our goal. Be honest, would you be happy with a 79 is it was 35-44? NO! You probably would’ve wanted to stay at or below par. So instead we would set our goal as a specific number of fairways, greens in regulation, and two putts. When we follow George’s method of goal setting helps remove self these self limiting beliefs. So if you’re new to the show or just feeling like taking golf more seriously this year those are the podcasts that I would review to really help get you going on the right foot. Stay tuned for upcoming podcasts where I’ll be answering questions submitted by our Golf Strategy Academy members. And hey, if you really want take your game seriously this year you can join me in the Golf Strategy Academy Membership
