As we approach 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, we find ourselves at a critical inflection point for democracy. The promise of equity demands that every policy and investment provide significant, sustained support to those most in need. This support must act as a bridge to creating an equitable economy, fostering an inclusive and compassionate society, and strengthening an accountable democracy. In this pivotal moment, we must ensure that our collective efforts address systemic inequalities, amplify marginalized voices, and create pathways for all individuals to thrive. Only by prioritizing these goals can we fulfill the foundational ideals of our nation and build a more just and resilient future. To that end, we are in need of a revolution of the soul. In this podcast, Tate Chamberlin hosts distinguished author and Duke University history and public policy professor Nancy MacLean, PolicyLink president and CEO Michael McAfee, and RepresentUs co-founder and CEO Josh Lynn in a discussion of the messy truths about democracy and getting things done.

It's easy to put control of our lives in God's hands when life is going according to plan. We meet the spouse. We get the job. We have the kids. But what happens when life goes anything but according to plan? Pastor Michael McAfee knows the heartache of having his plans derailed. He and his wife, Lauren, walked through a seven-year period of waiting to be parents before welcoming their daughter, Zion, home. A few months later she was diagnosed with cancer (Zion is now celebrating four years of remission!). In the midst of all that uncertainty, Michael learned how to surrender ultimate control to God, no matter the outcome, and that's the story he shares on today's unforgettable episode of Unapologetic. Julia is a friend and fan of the McAfee's, and also knows what it's like to struggle through infertility and loss. During their honest and heartwarming conversation, Julia and Michael talk about everything from God's purpose for suffering and working to surrender that control to Michael's passion for leading trips through his role at Inspire Experiences and his advice on where to start when it comes to reading the Bible. Towards the end of their conversion the two also discuss how they've seen God's Word prove to be living and active in their own lives. Whatever you've walked through or are currently walking through, this uplifting episode will encourage you that God is forever with you and for you. Bakari Sellers became the youngest elected official in the country at the age of 22 when he won a seat in South Carolina's House of Representatives. He argues, however, that his journey began long before he was born. His family faced many struggles as a part of the South's dwindling rural, black working class—losing access to health care as rural hospitals disappeared; attempting to make ends meet as the factories people relied on shut down and moved overseas; attempting to hold on to precious traditions as towns eroded; and forging a path forward without succumbing to despair—these are all facets of not only his life, but of an entire community's. In My Vanishing Country, Bakari Sellers tells the story of his father's rise to become a civil rights hero, a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and a role model for his own developing identity as a father to newborn twins. Join Sellers at INFORUM, where he will tell his deeply personal story of hope in the face of adversity and a history that is reflective of countless families in the American south. This conversation will be moderated by PolicyLink President and CEO Dr. Michael McAfee. My guest for The Happy Hour #298 is Lauren McAfee. Lauren is a speaker, writer, connector, and coffee enthusiast with a heart to engage others in the Bible. With her husband Michael McAfee, she is the author of Not What You Think: Why the Bible Might Be Nothing We Expected Yet Everything We Need. In today’s episode, Lauren and I talk Hobby Lobby, the Museum of the Bible, and getting her PhD in Ethics and Public Policy at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Lauren also shares so vulnerably about her tumultuous path toward motherhood, her family’s adoption story with their daughter Zion, Zion’s cancer diagnosis, and how she tethered herself to the Word. I was so moved when Lauren told the story of her friend reassuring her with Lauren’s own words -- that “even if we never have this longing for children fulfilled, Jesus is enough.” Friends, Lauren has fought so courageously to stay close to God through difficult seasons and she is a great encouragement to all of us that we find contentment in Christ and not our circumstances. Be sure to check out Lauren’s book, Not What You Think: Why the Bible Might Be Nothing We Expected Yet Everything We Need. Not What You Think is the book you need to clear the deck on your preconceptions of the Bible and encounter it anew.   Connect with Jamie Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube GET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

Have you ever taken the time to take an honest and fair look at the most controversial book in history? Lauren McAfee shares why the Bible might be nothing we expected yet everything we need in her brand new book, Not What You Think. Lauren McAfee and Michael McAfee have been married for ten years; and Michael calls Lauren his Sunday School sweetheart. You can say Michael is obsessed with all things Bible. He was one of the first employees at Museum of the Bible. Michael serves as a Teaching Pastor and speaker around the country. Both he and Lauren are pursuing their Ph.D. in Ethics and Public Policy at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Now Lauren is a communicator, connector, and most importantly, a coffee enthusiast with a heart to engage others in the Bible. You may recall Lauren's visit with us a little over a year ago with her mom, Jackie Green --- who is the wife of Steve Green, who is the President of Hobby Lobby and founder of Museum of the Bible. They shared with us their book Only One Life. Well today, Michael and Lauren, a dynamic duo, have banded together to share their passion about the transformational power of the Bible in their brand new book, Not What You Think: Why The Bible Might Be Nothing We Expected Yet Everything We Need. "The Bible is a personal story set on a universal stage.” ~ Lauren McAfee   CONNECT with Lauren McAfee BOOK: Not What You Think Enjoy the multitude of topics discussed including millennials, humility, Harry Potter, grief, plus so much more. "Those of us may be open to the Bible, and kind of see it as something that's just out there --- that's the middle group. (Bible Opened)" "Those that are really engaged in the Bible see the Bible as significant for their life; it shapes their life. (Bible Engaged)" "Those that are not really interested in the Bible. They not only don't think about it, but they're definitely not interested that don't want to, wouldn't want to even, if someone invited them to. (Bible Closed)." "If we are the open-minded generation that we are, why not be open-minded towards engaging in this book." "Though we each grew up with families that were very engage in the Bible, we each had to come to terms with the Bible, what we thought about the Bible for ourselves." "We, as Millennials, realize that we're not an older generation that's developed all the expertise. But as Millennials, we have spent a lot of time in the conversations with other Millennials." "Most of us are checking Twitter for the news." "We integrate everything in our life; things between kind of personal and public; the lines are blurred there, because of the rise of social media." "So while we have lots of integrated relationships, we're rarely intimate in those relationships." "So it's about that relationship and not necessarily about the Ten Commandments and rules, though that is apart of the story." "We recognize that we live in a world full of broken people (that's because of sin), and that no church, no Christian is perfect. And so we do cause hurts to each other and sometimes really bad hurts." "I knew that there had to be ways to process through these questions, and even if I couldn't find the answer, at least kind of dig into understanding better where he was coming from." "That was a gift that I wouldn't have had if I wasn't able to be challenged and have people question and bring up good points that were worth considering until I wrestled through that." "Michael mentions that I am a big Harry Potter fan." "There's so much evidence that's hard to push aside. "But also realize that not all content is of equal value." "Michael and I are so grateful for what we know from scripture, and that firm foundation to hold to in the midst of suffering when we don't understand, it doesn't make sense, we don't know why." "We have that hope because of who Christ is and what He's done for us."    What has your story gifted you? Feb. 14 marked the 2020 Boskone book expo and I had a great time, as usual. She's completed her sci-fi “Horizon” series and tells me about the urban fantasy story she's working on now, which includes a lot of research.   Last in this episode is Vincent O'Neil, who has been hard at work shopping around the script for his “Handler Hank” short story. He goes into the transition from short story to script and what other of his works he'd like to see on the screen.

Social media mania, computer crazed, smart phone savvy and oh yeah, more spiritual than religious. The Millennial generation may have an affinity for avocado toast and taking selfies, but they shun organized religion having been raised on the internet and individual freedoms, aka 'determining right and wrong for themselves.' But something happened to a few of those Millennials who are now searching  for something beyond a surface spirituality. They craved a foundational faith that transcends theirs, and their parents' generation. That's who Lauren and Michael McAffee represent. Their book, "Not What You Think: Why The Bible Might Be Nothing We expected Yet Everything We Need," is a commentary on the state of their generation's spiritual mindset, but also a candid prescription of what it actually needs and hungers for. Their own spiritual genealogy shows a strong religious background. Lauren is the daughter of Stephen Green, head of the Hobby Lobby franchise, and major benefactor of the Museum of the Bible. But that disclaimer allows her to be honest about her own spiritual questions. She and Michael have made their faith their own. They've looked at the evidence, and now want to tell their contemporaries what they concluded.
