Most people stay stuck because they're waiting for clarity.Big mistake. When you're 15–20 years into your career, the destination will never be what you imagined anyway. What's really keeping you stuck isn't a lack of direction. It's fear.Fear disguised as “being strategic.”Fear disguised as “waiting for the right moment.”Fear disguised as “needing more information.”But here's the thing:You don't overcome fear by thinking your way through it.You overcome it by moving through it.The path doesn't appear before you move.It reveals itself because you moved.Start small: One conversation. One experiment. One step forward.Your next chapter is waiting on the other side of action, not analysis.

Fixing things feels good. It proves we're still valuable. Still sharp. You Can Only Make So Many Good Decisions - Are You Using Them Right? In 1987, we made 100s of decisions daily.Today, we make 35,000.Here's the problem: we can only make a finite number of quality decisions each day. By evening, when we're making important business decisions during work calls or spending time with our children, we've already used up our good decisions quota. The result? We default to the easiest and safest options - not the best ones.No amount of coffee, Red Bull, or willpower can fix this. When scaling a cause, should you pick passionate volunteers or capable ones? Most instinctively say passion. But Uma Thana Balasingam's journey scaling Lean In Singapore to 7,000+ members tells a different story. Here's the hard truth she discovered: Passionate people don't always make great leaders. When she and her co-founder started delegating leadership roles to their most committed volunteers, they hit a wall. Leading a movement isn't just about heart - it's a skill. Managing complexity, making tough calls, and leading others require more than just good intentions. The dilemma?Capable people execute brilliantly but often vanish when things get tough.Passionate people stay committed but can struggle with execution.Early on, you don't have the luxury of choice - you work with whoever shows up. But as you scale, the reality sets in:Passion without execution creates chaos.Execution without passion creates emptiness. You need both.In the latest How to Live podcast, Uma and I unpack this challenge. From founding Lean In Singapore to leadership roles at VTech, Dell, and IBM, to now building Elevate to champion women across Asia - she's lived this tension between passion and capability. If you're wrestling with turning your purpose into impact, this conversation is for you. Episode Shownoteshttps://howtolive.life/episode/088-turning-purpose-into-action-with-Uma-balasingamNext Wave6 month program for high performers hitting 40s and beyond to design the next phase of life. How do you reinvent yourself when you've already reached the top of one field? It's a question many of us face as long careers, industry disruptions, or even boredom push us to rethink our path.In the latest episode of the How to Live podcast, I sit down with the legendary sports broadcaster John Dykes, who shares his powerful and deeply personal story of stepping out of the broadcast spotlight and into corporate boardrooms. For years, John was the trusted face of the Premier League, someone we all tuned in to see. But even before the broadcast industry in Southeast Asia faced disruption, John found himself questioning the purpose and relevance of what he was doing. After decades spent in Sports TV listening to the legends and unpicking their strategies, he began questioning his next move - convinced he wanted to inform, educate and entertain. He spent two years exploring where he could still make an impact within the sports world—experiencing both triumphs and doubts. But a friend's remark changed everything: "John, you're more than just an entertaining dinner speech." Brutal, but it struck a chord.Through various explorations, John realised his core skills—communication, crisis management, leadership lessons from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, and the Williams Sisters—were just as relevant in the corporate world. The stage may have shifted, but the principles remained the same. With a natural gift for storytelling, John began helping corporate leaders, from investment bankers to senior executives, communicate powerfully, make strategic decisions, and even recruit with insights from football's greatest. Yet, it wasn't all smooth sailing. He had to learn the ropes of commercialising his services, setting the right pricing, and designing programs from scratch. What struck me most about John's journey wasn't just his skillset—it was his mindset. Science says it might not be intuition at all—it's arousal misattribution.Professor Joel Pearson experienced this firsthand during a rock climbing first date. Years later, his groundbreaking research revealed the truth: the exhilaration of climbing created a physiological high he mistook for romantic connection. This phenomenon explains why intuition often fails in emotionally charged situations, both personal and professional. While intuition has been widely discussed from spiritual and coaching perspectives, scientific research was lacking—until now.Enter Professor Joel Pearson, PhD in neuroscience and founder of the Future Minds Lab at the University of New South Wales. As the pioneer in the scientific study of intuition, his revolutionary SMILE Model (Self-awareness, Mastery, Impulse control, Low probability, and Environment) offers a framework for understanding when to trust our gut and when to think twice.Fresh from the release of his book "The Intuition Toolkit" and appearances on global podcasts like the Rich Roll Podcast, Prof Pearson joins us to share his insights. Ever blanked during a crucial presentation, your mind suddenly empty? The panic, the embarrassment, the self-doubt that follows... Sound familiar?Welcome to midlife, where this happens more often. But here's the twist - it's not a downward spiral, it's an evolution. Our brains start changing in our late 30s, with the prefrontal cortex slowing down. We can't process information as rapidly as before. Clinging to our younger cognitive patterns only makes us brittle, like someone stubbornly insisting they're right when everyone else sees otherwise. But here's the silver lining: while we may not be as quick as we once were, we're developing new superpowers. The hemispheres of our brains are communicating more, enhancing our ability to connect dots and recognize patterns far better than in our 30s.This can become our secret weapon as leaders in our 40s and 50s.We delve into this and more with Aneace Haddad, a former tech CEO who pivoted to C-Suite Executive Coaching at 47. After selling his multinational tech company spread across 30 countries, Aneace reshaped his career and now guides executives through midlife leadership evolution. He's also a Senior Advisor to McKinsey and facilitator at Deloitte University.A profound, insightful conversation that anyone in their late 30s, 40s, and 50s should hear. Have you ever felt that "Nice guys finish last"?We've all rooted for the underdog. The hero who helps others but is always left behind. However in the end, against all odds, finishes on top. This happens only in the movies right? When we look around, especially in the competitive business world, the reality seems grim. We see good people who give without expecting, being overshadowed by those who master the art of taking credit. I noticed this in my early career but with time a fascinating shift occurred - the power of reputation took control. People began to recognize who puts in the effort and who free rides. Givers start emerging on top. This revelation was solidified when I read Adam Grant's "Give and Take," thanks to a recommendation from my speaking mentor Avi Liran. Adam's research showed that takers may have short-term gains, but it's the givers who truly come out on top. There's a caveat though. In the latest episode of the How to Live Podcast, I build on Adam's theory and introduce my thesis around meaningful and desperate giving, examine the dynamics of the asking-giving relationship, and yes reveal the caveat for thriving as a giver.Discover why not all forms of giving are created equal, and how to ensure your generosity leads to success.Episode Shownoteshttps://howtolive.life/episode/058-purpose-in-everyday-lifeRelated Episode#058 Purpose in everyday lifeSpotify: https://howtolive.life/ep58spotifyApple Podcasts: https://howtolive.life/ep58appleLeave us a messagehttps://howtolive.life/contactAbout Sharad Lalhttps://www.sharadlal.net/Follow usLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharadlal24/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PodcastHowtolive/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcasthowtolive/
