If you've wanted to start growing your own sprouts, this is for you! I learned how to grow sprouts after becoming fed up with the expensive packages from the store getting slimy a day or so after buying them.I've continued to sprout different types of seeds and encourage clients to also do this, since sprouts (especially broccoli sprouts) are so good for your liver detoxification. So if you think that sprouting is hard to learn – it's not!In fact, it's so easy that my husband who doesn't even eat sprouts helps me. It takes less than a minute to care for them, and they add so much nutritional value to your meals. To help you learn more about how to grow sprouts in a jar, the difference between sprouts and microgreens, AND how to keep the mold and slime away, I'm joined by Doug Evans, who is considered to be an early pioneer in the natural food industry. In 2002, he co-founded Organic Avenue, one of the first exclusively raw, organic, and plant-based retail chains in the country. He then founded Juicero, the first fresh, farm-to-glass automatic cold-press juicer. Doug is now the founder of The Sprouting Company and lives in the Mojave Desert at Wonder Valley Hot Springs. He wrote The Sprout Book to teach people about the power of sprouts and how to start sprouting. So let's dive in!In This Episode:Why sprouts are so nutritiousHow to grow sprouts at home (to avoid the slimy store-bought ones)Difference between sprouts, shoots + microgreensBest method to grow sprouts (jar vs tray vs paper towel)Picking the right seeds to sprout to avoid glyphosate + low nutrientsFood-borne illnesses + sproutsHow to store sprouts so they last to avoid MOLD!Tips to add sprouts to your dietBeginner-friendly options to start your sprouting journeyQuotes“For me, there's nothing better, fresher, healthier than consuming sprouts that you get to grow on your own.”“So the sprouting seeds, you can have top shelf and bottom shelf. So just getting a seed from a bulk bin…in a grocery store. We don't know where it came from, we don't know how old it is, we don't know what it's been exposed to. So since we're using these seeds to grow food for you know ourselves and our family, we want to have the best.”LinksFind Doug online | Instagram | Instagram | TiktokGet Doug's book, The Sprout BookHealthy Skin Show ep. 177: Liver Detox – Skin Rash Connection, PT 1

The three university students from three different countries serendipitously crossed paths while working part-time at a local hardware store. Little did they know, their common interests for business, tech and sustainability would result in the launch of ALLPA Vertical Farms in 2019, a hydroponic microgreen company located in Calgary, Alberta. ALLPA is named after Mama Allpa, in South America's Inca religion and empire, the goddess of the Earth and fertility, responsible for fruitful harvests. Their civilization was one of the first to grow vegetables in water and this inspired us deeply. They contribute to the local economy by buying their compostable containers and seeds from Canadian companies. The thing that really makes them unique is that every one of their microgreen packages has a donation built into it! They carry four products: Arugula, Radish, Sunflower and Broccoli. The International Microgreen Growers Association Florida is the first-ever non-profit of Vitality Farms owner, Lisa Welsh and her family! The point of it is to join over 200 farmers in the state of Florida together so they can better serve our customer's needs. There is so much education that needs to go to the consumer and hopefully, we can create campaigns that will serve all the farmers in the state by educating our consumers. In addition, we are already starting to work with the extension office to put together safety protocols for Microgreens specifically. A lot of agricultural rules are different based on the method of farming and our goal is to carve the path to a better community of microgreen growers. Mustard microgreens are a fun group of plants to grow. They come in all kinds of shapes, colors, varying degrees of spiciness, and are easy to grow. Microgreen mustard seeds produce mildly spicy, tender, succulent microgreens that add mild horseradish flavour to salads and blends. They are very fast to germinate and grow. Try scattering mustard microgreens over salads for a subtle hit of flavour. So close to horseradish in flavour, they make a fine complement to roast beef or even sushi. A superb source of carotene and antioxidants, as well as a host of vitamins and minerals. Mustard microgreens are green in colour. Learn how to grow microgreens in our online instructions and grow your own fast, nutritious micro greens at home. We are often asked, almost daily in fact, if you can reuse microgreen soil once the greens have been harvested. My old blanket answer was "No". However, we recently ran a test to see if it is possible to grow a decent tray of microgreens in reused soil.We expected some ugly trays of microgreens. But boy, were we shocked! It turns old that in some cases clipping down the old crop and planting on top of the stubble will work. The question, however, is should you reuse microgreen soil. Is there too big a risk of disease? We still recommend not reusing microgreen soil. Regardless of what our testing shows. But check out the results and make your own decision. Check out a video and photos of our test and results at HomeMicrogreens.com/009.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/HomeMicrogreens)
We talk about microgreen growing trays in this episode and give you recommendations of the 3 best microgreen trays. We also talk about the criteria that a container needs to be a good microgreen tray.Cheaper or free is not always better and we understand why home growers sometimes re-use produce clamshells and other re-usable items; but, they still end up in the recyclable container after one or two uses. This podcast has an associated article published on HomeMicrogreens.com. Here's a link to that article.Links to all of the recommended microgreen growing trays can be found in the show notes at HomeMicrogreens.com/006Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/HomeMicrogreens)
Microgreen growers have two choices if they want to grow in soil. Either peat moss or coconut coir. Tens of thousands of people plant microgreens in peat moss. But we can't stand using it here at Home Microgreens. This episode of the Microgreens Podcast explains why we hate peat moss for growing microgreens. The podcast has a companion article, you can find the article by following this link: Why We Hate Peat Moss.Show notes for this podcast can be found at HomeMicrogreens.com/003Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/HomeMicrogreens)

Today's episode is a different type of episode. It's a consult style episode with new grower Eddy Gilmore and long-time microgreen grower Chris Thoreau. The first part of this episode will be Eddy and I talking about what's going on with his farm, and then later in the episode Chris will join us to answer some of Eddy's questions about growing his microgreen business. Eddy's at a point in that business that you may find yourself in. He's growing his microgreens at home in his house, but he's running out of space and wondering where to from here. Find out how Chris would handle and approach the business expansion. For Eddy microgreens weren't the first farm business from day one. They came about from necessity. In Eddy's words... “We were freaking desperate over here. I have a wife and two kids, and I was all in on Tiny Farm Duluth. Less than two months ago it seemed as if all was lost. The land was being sold where the vast majority of my farm was located. It was owned by an institution, and I had no idea they were thinking of selling until just before it went on the market. Then, after it sold, I learned that the new owners weren't open to a 7,000 square foot market garden on their property. Just two hours after I received this devastating news, our 2008 Toyota Prius blew both the engine AND transmission. Total, absolute chaos. Our lives were completely upended.” Given that Eddy's life was upended, how did it end up? Stay tuned to find out. When you start your farm business, one think that you need to think about is your business structure. Sole proprietorships and LLCs are common ways to go, but there are also other options, like co-operatives... That's how farmer Chris Thoreau of Food Pedalers structure his business, and that's the subject of today's show... Today I'm going up to Vancouver to talk to microgreen farmer Chris Thoreau about a topic that you don't hear discussed a lot in small scale farming circles - how he organized his business.. Chris initially started his business as a sole proprietor, but as he began to grow, both in the size of the business and the amount of people working in the business, he realized he needed to change that. After looking at all of the options, Chris decided that he wanted to do something different, something that went more against the status quo, and something that was equitable for everyone involved - so Chris organized his business as a co-operative. It's an interesting business structure and it's one that most people wouldn't think of when organizing their business. If your business is growing, or if you are thinking about expanding your team, then a coop structure might make sense for you... Today Chris will talk about why he chose that structure, the advantages and disadvantages of it, and what it takes to have a successful member-owner business. Keri Fox on SPIN Farming Starting a farming business in an urban area and making it work. Keri grew up on an organic farm in a small Saskatchewan community when organic wasn't cool or trendy. After feeling like an outcast, and perceiving her parents as “poor,” she decided to pursue a more profitable career. After getting her electrician journeyperson license, she ran an electrical contracting business for 8 years and made good money doing this. However, she felt her business was contributing to the destruction of the planet. Knowing she needed a change, and having recently been introduced to permaculture, she took a leap of faith and sold her business to search for a lifestyle that would help heal the planet. Keri took a series of permaculture based workshops over the next couple of years and eventually found herself in a SPIN farming workshop. Having found what she was looking for, she immediately returned home with a “crazy idea” to farm in the city. The idea got around and she started her new business with veggies in 8 different yards in return for a weekly box of vegetables, and sold the rest at the local farmers market. Now, at the end of 5th growing season, she works 1/3 of an acre including 7 outdoor garden spaces, one hoop house style greenhouse and an indoor micro-green operation, offers a salad box subscription that delivers to 9 restaurants as well as the weekly farmers market. IN THIS PODCAST: Greg talks to Keri, a former electrician who quit to be a farmer because it was better for the planet. She tells why she left her successful business to run a small plot farm, and how she has developed that into quite the impressive and sustainable venture. She describes how she rides her bike from plot to plot, sells to restaurants and farmers markets, and has a salad box subscription. Farming with little-to-no land of your own can work, and she proves it in her story. Go to www.urbanfarm.org/blog/podcast/ to see our list of podcasts and to sign up for weekly updates
